Non-collinear phase matching in optical parametric oscillators enables unique possibilities ranging from ultra-broadband rapid spectral tuning to intrinsic advantages in power scaling. This work is an overview of this concept adapted to different wavelength ranges.

This research explores the creation of Type II waveguide configurations in diamond using femtosecond laser technology, focusing on the enhancement of light propagation using pin-structures and extensive parameter investigation, offering significant advances in the fields of photonics and quantum sensing.

We present two noninvasive characterization methods to investigate laser induced modifications in bulk fused silica glasses. The methods discussed are immersion microscopy and scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM). SAM shows merits in measuring the distance from sample surface to the first detectable density change of the modification, while immersion microscopy offers a look into the modification. Both noninvasive methods are preferred over conventional polishing or etching techniques due to the facts, that multiple investigations can be done with only one sample and lower time expenditure. The type II modifications were introduced by focusing laser pulses with high repetition rates into the fused silica.

The electronic and nuclear dynamics inside molecules are essential for chemical reactions, where different pathways typically unfold on ultrafast timescales. Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light pulses generated by free-electron lasers (FELs) allow atomic-site and electronic-state selectivity, triggering specific molecular dynamics while providing femtosecond resolution. Yet, time-resolved experiments are either blind to neutral fragments or limited by the spectral bandwidth of FEL pulses. Here, we combine a broadband XUV probe pulse from high-order harmonic generation with an FEL pump pulse to observe dissociation pathways leading to fragments in different quantum states. We temporally resolve the dissociation of a specific O 2 + state into two competing channels by measuring the resonances of ionic and neutral fragments. This scheme can be applied to investigate convoluted dynamics in larger molecules relevant to diverse science fields.

The use of ultrashort pulse lasers in medical treatments is increasing and is already an essential tool, particularly in the treatment of eyes, bones and skin. One of the main advantages of laser treatment is that it is fast and minimally invasive. Due to the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with matter, X-rays can be generated during the laser ablation process. This is important not only for the safety of the patient, but also for the practitioner to ensure that the legally permissible dose is not exceeded. Although our results do not raise safety concerns for existing clinical applications, they might impact future developments at higher peak powers. Broadband tunable femtosecond laser pulses are of great interest in numerous fields, such as spectroscopy or imaging. Here, we report on the generation of rapidly tunable radiation in the near UV by using intracavity non-collinear sum-frequency mixing between the visible pulses of a non-collinear optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) and a near-infrared beam. The NOPO is pumped by the third harmonic of an Yb-based master oscillator fiber amplifier (MOFA). For sum-frequency mixing, remaining fundamental pulses at 1030 nm are used. With this approach, near-UV pulses in a range of 333-413 nm with average output powers up to 90 mW and pulse durations from 158-240 fs are achieved. Fast tunability is demonstrated over the whole tuning range by varying just the cavity length. The system also allows for the generation of two simultaneous synchronized output pulse trains in the visible and the near-UV spectral range.

We investigate the impact of collisions with two-frequency photonic molecules aiming to observe internal dynamic behavior and challenge their strong robustness. Versatile interaction scenarios show intriguing state changes expressed through modifications of the resulting state such as temporal compression and unknown collision-induced spectral tunneling. These processes show potential for efficient coherent supercontinuum generation and all-optical manipulation.

Third harmonic generation (THG) from dielectric layers is investigated. By forming a thin gradient of HfO 2 with continuously increasing thickness, we are able to study this process in detail. This technique allows us to elucidate the influence of the substrate and to quantify the layered materials third χ (3) (3ω: ω, ω, ω) and even fifth order χ (5) (3ω: ω, ω, ω, ω, - ω) nonlinear susceptibility at the fundamental wavelength of 1030 nm. This is to the best of our knowledge the first measurement of the fifth order nonlinear susceptibility in thin dielectric layers.

We report here the results of comprehensive plasma characterization and diagnostics by analyzing time-resolved absorption spectra of short ultrabroadband (0.1-50 THz) pulses propagated through the test plasma. Spectral analysis of plasma-induced absorption of such THz pulses provides very direct, in situ, high dynamical range, potentially single-shot access to the plasma density, plasma decay time, electron temperature, and ballistic dynamics of the plasma expansion. We have demonstrated a proof-of-principle measurement of plasma created by an intense laser beam. In particular, we showed a reliable measurement of plasma densities from around 10^{16} to 10^{20}cm^{-3}. Apart from the plasma parameters, this method allowed us to reconstruct peak intensity inside the plasma spot and to observe a very early stage of plasma evolution after its excitation.

Mamyshev oscillators have pushed the frontiers in output parameters of ytterbium- and erbium-based ultrafast fiber oscillators in the spectral region around 1 µm and 1.5 µm within the last few years tremendously. In order to expand the superior performance toward the 2 µm spectral region, we present in this Letter an experimental investigation of the generation of high-energy pulses by a thulium-doped fiber Mamyshev oscillator. Generating highly energetic pulses is enabled by a tailored redshifted gain spectrum in a highly doped double-clad fiber. The oscillator emits pulses with an energy of up to 15 nJ, which can be compressed to 140 fs.

A large range of laser-matter applications employ ultrashort pulses and high laser intensity. Such processes can lead to unrequired X-ray generation, which represents a hazardous radiation factor even for common laboratory research-grade laser systems. We present here an analysis of the radiation dose rate and X-ray spectrum emitted during ablation of a rotating copper cylinder with respect to several laser parameters. The results show that focused sub-picosecond pulses with intensity above 10 13  W/cm 2 can exceed the annual irradiation limit even in one hour, requiring appropriate shielding for the safety of the researchers.

We present an experimental method capable of capturing the complete spatio-temporal dynamics of filamenting ultrashort laser pulses. By employing spatially resolved Fourier transform spectrometry in combination with the capability to terminate the filament at any length, we can follow the nonlinear dynamics in four dimensions, i.e. the transverse domain, time and filament length. Our method thus not only enables the full characterization of the filamentation process throughout its evolution, but also allows to identify and select laser pulses with desired parameters.
