Research has demonstrated that deaf children of deaf signing parents (DOD) are afforded developmental advantages. This can be misconstrued as indicating that no DOD children exhibit early language delays (ELDs) because of their early access to a visual language. Little research has studied this presumption. In this study, we examine 174 ratings of DOD 3- to 5-year-old children, for whom signing in the home was indicated, using archival data from the online database of the Visual Communication and Sign Language Checklist. Our goals were to (1) examine the incidence of ELDs in a cohort of DOD children; (2) compare alternative scaling strategies for identifying ELD children; (3) explore patterns among behavioral ratings with a view toward developing a greater understanding of the types of language behaviors that may lie at the root of language delays; and (4) suggest recommendations for parents and professionals working with language-delayed DOD children. The results indicated that a significant number of ratings suggested ELDs, with a subset significantly delayed. These children likely require further evaluation. Among the less delayed group, ASL skills, rather than communication or cognition, were seen as the major concern, suggesting that even DOD children may require support developing linguistically accurate ASL. Overall, these findings support the need for early and ongoing evaluation of visual language skills in young DOD children.

Language development is an important facet of early life. Deaf children may have exposure to various languages and communication modalities, including spoken and visual. Previous research has documented the rate of growth of English skills among young deaf children, but no studies have investigated the rate of ASL acquisition. The current paper examines young deaf children's acquisition of ASL skills, the rate of growth over time, and factors impacting levels and growth rates. Seventy-three children ages birth to 5 were rated three times using the Visual Communication and Sign Language Checklist and given a scaled score at each rating. An average monthly gain score was calculated for each participant. The presence of a deaf parent, use of ASL at home, use of cochlear implant(s), whether the child was born deaf, and age of initial diagnosis were analyzed for their impact on the level of ASL skill and rate of growth. Results indicated that the use of ASL in the home has a significant positive effect on deaf children's ASL skill level. Additionally, children with lower initial ratings showed higher rates of growth than those with higher initial ratings, especially among school-aged children. The paper discusses implications and directions for future studies.

In the context of neurorehabilitation, there have been rapid and continuous improvements in sensors-based clinical tools to quantify limb performance. As a result of the increasing integration of technologies in the assessment procedure, the need to integrate evidence-based medicine with benchmarking has emerged in the scientific community. In this work, we present the experimental validation of our previously proposed benchmarking scheme for upper limb capabilities in terms of repeatability, reproducibility, and clinical meaningfulness. We performed a prospective multicenter study on neurologically intact young and elderly subjects and post-stroke patients while recording kinematics and electromyography. 60 subjects (30 young healthy, 15 elderly healthy, and 15 post-stroke) completed the benchmarking protocol. The framework was repeatable among different assessors and instrumentation. Age did not significantly impact the performance indicators of the scheme for healthy subjects. In post-stroke subjects, the movements presented decreased smoothness and speed, the movement amplitude was reduced, and the muscular activation showed lower power and lower intra-limb coordination. We revised the original framework reducing it to three motor skills, and we extracted 14 significant performance indicators with a good correlation with the ARAT clinical scale. The applicability of the scheme is wide, and it may be considered a valuable tool for upper limb functional evaluation in the clinical routine.

Transfemoral amputation is a debilitating condition that leads to long-term mobility restriction and secondary disorders that negatively affect the quality of life of millions of individuals worldwide. Currently available prostheses are not able to restore energetically efficient and functional gait, thus, recently, the alternative strategy to inject energy at the residual hip has been proposed to compensate for the lack of energy of the missing leg. Here, we show that a portable and powered hip exoskeleton assisting both the residual and intact limb induced a reduction of walking energy expenditure in four individuals with above-knee amputation. The reduction of the energy expenditure, quantified using the Physiological Cost Index, was in the range [-10, -17]% for all study participants compared to walking without assistance, and between [-2, -24]% in three out of four study participants compared to walking without the device. Additionally, all study participants were able to walk comfortably and confidently with the hip exoskeleton overground at both their self-selected comfortable and fast speed without any observable alterations in gait stability. The study findings confirm that injecting energy at the hip level is a promising approach for individuals with above-knee amputation. By reducing the energy expenditure of walking and facilitating gait, a hip exoskeleton may extend mobility and improve locomotor training of individuals with above-knee amputation, with several positive implications for their quality of life.

Since its publication in 2013, the Visual Communication and Sign Language (VCSL) Checklist has been widely utilized to assess the development of early American Sign Language skills of deaf children from birth to age 5. However, little research has been published using the results of VCSL assessments. Notably, no psychometric analyses have been conducted to verify the validity of the VCSL in a population whose characteristics are different from those of the small sample of native signing children from whom the published norms were created. The current paper, using data from the online version of the VCSL (VCSL:O), addresses this shortcoming. Ratings of the 114 VCSL items from 562 evaluations were analyzed using a partial-credit Rasch model. Results indicate that the underlying skill across the age range comprises an adequate single dimension. Within the items' age groupings, however, the dimensionality is not so clear. Item ordering, as well as item fit, is explored in detail. In addition, the paper reports the benefits of using the resulting Rasch scale scores, which, unlike the published scoring strategy that focuses on basal and ceiling performance, makes use of the ratings of partial credit, or emerging, skills. Strategies for revising the VCSL are recommended.

Psychological assessment plays a large part in the practice of psychology. Over the years, steps have been taken towards ensuring ethical and culturally sensitive psychological assessment for underserved populations, but little is known about the current state of the field of assessment of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) individuals. An exploratory survey of school and clinical psychologists who work with DHH clients (n = 30) was conducted to obtain a snapshot of the state of the field. The current article focuses on sociodemographic characteristics, clinical training, clinical experiences, and language abilities of clinical psychologists who work with DHH clients. Participants averaged 15 years of assessment experience and almost all participants had some type of specialized training in assessing DHH clients. More than half of participants reported their ability to use multiple languages and communication approaches as either excellent or good. Current findings were compared with a similar survey from nearly 50 years ago (Levine, E. S. (1974). Psychological tests and practices with the deaf: A survey of the state of the art. "Volta Review," 76, 298-319), and significant differences were found in participants' self-reported experience with DHH clients, training, and methods of communication.

Deaf children of hearing parents (DOH) are at risk for early language delays (ELD) due to environmental and etiological factors, compounding the previously reported higher incidence of ELD in deaf children of deaf parents (DOD) compared to the general population. Archival data from the online database of the Visual Communication and Sign Language Checklist yielded 147 ratings of DOH 3- to 5-year-old children whose parents reported American sign language (ASL) being used in the home at least equally to spoken language. Research goals included (1) examining the incidence of ELD in this cohort, (2) investigating differences in outcomes based on the scaling method used, (3) exploring patterns among the ratings of DOH children identified with ELD, (4) comparing the DOH outcomes to published DOD data, and (5) investigating differences between ratings and individual children. The DOH outcomes suggested an incidence of ELD twice that of the previous DOD sample, with a higher percentage of more severe delays. Even DOH children not identified with ELD demonstrated less well-developed ASL skills than their DOD peers. This emphasizes the need for ongoing monitoring of early ASL skills to allow for early identification of needs and adjustment of interventions to address ASL development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays, robotic technology for gait training is becoming a common tool in rehabilitation hospitals. However, its effectiveness is still controversial. Traditional control strategies do not adequately integrate human intention and interaction and little is known regarding the impact of exoskeleton control strategies on muscle coordination, physical effort, and user acceptance. In this article, we benchmarked three types of exoskeleton control strategies in a sample of seven healthy volunteers: trajectory assistance (TC), compliant assistance (AC), and compliant assistance with EMG-Onset stepping control (OC), which allows the user to decide when to take a step during the walking cycle. This exploratory study was conducted within the EUROBENCH project facility. Experimental procedures and data analysis were conducted following EUROBENCH’s protocols. Specifically, exoskeleton kinematics, muscle activation, heart and breathing rates, skin conductance, as well as user-perceived effort were analyzed. Our results show that the OC controller showed robust performance in detecting stepping intention even using a corrupt EMG acquisition channel. The AC and OC controllers resulted in similar kinematic alterations compared to the TC controller. Muscle synergies remained similar to the synergies found in the literature, although some changes in muscle contribution were found, as well as an overall increase in agonist-antagonist co-contraction. The OC condition led to the decreased mean duration of activation of synergies. These differences were not reflected in the overall physiological impact of walking or subjective perception. We conclude that, although the AC and OC walking conditions allowed the users to modulate their walking pattern, the application of these two controllers did not translate into significant changes in the overall physiological cost of walking nor the perceived experience of use. Nonetheless, results suggest that both AC and OC controllers are potentially interesting approaches that can be explored as gait rehabilitation tools. Furthermore, the INTENTION project is, to our knowledge, the first study to benchmark the effects on human–exoskeleton interaction of three different exoskeleton controllers, including a new EMG-based controller designed by us and never tested in previous studies, which has made it possible to provide valuable third-party feedback on the use of the EUROBENCH facility and testbed, enriching the apprenticeship of the project consortium and contributing to the scientific community.

Brand management has become a key element in museum differentiation and competitiveness. When a museum's brand is associated with a particular artist, the artist is a brand in themselves, bestowing the museum added value and shaping its personality. In recent years there has been a growing trend in museum management towards strengthening their brands. The aim of this work is to determine the elements of transmission of brand identity in museums associated with an artist based on the model proposed by Aaker [1996. Construir Marcas Poderosas. Barcelona: Gestión 2000]. A qualitative methodology based on thematic analysis has been employed to draw the main conclusions from the in-depth interviews of the directors and heads of Communication and Marketing of the Picasso museums in Spain. The results reflect that the link between brand, artist and museum is not only transmitted through the product, symbolism and organisation but also through its connection with the territory and its digital sphere.
