2. Promoting Students' Safety and Wellbeing: Ethical Practice in Schools

Abstract

Although 'child safety' is now a national policy priority in Australia, there is little research exploring the "practices" in schools that contribute to children and young people's felt sense of safety and wellbeing. Drawing on a mixed-method Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery project, this article presents findings from interviews with school staff (N = 10), leaders (N = 5) and nine focus groups with students (N = 58), in primary and secondary schools in three Australian states (New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia). We employ relational ethics, recognition theory and the theory of practice architectures to explore practices at school that support student wellbeing and safety. The findings contribute significantly to understanding the 'bundled' nature of current practices and the conditions that enable and constrain these. Close attention to these findings is critical as schools seek to operationalise the National Child Safe Principles and refine ongoing safeguarding procedures. The findings have informed the development of an online survey that is currently testing, on a much larger scale, which elements of ethical practice are most positively associated with students' safety, wellbeing and recognition at school.

Abstract

The development of algorithms for remote sensing of water quality (RSWQ) requires a large amount of in situ data to account for the bio-geo-optical diversity of inland and coastal waters. The GLObal Reflectance community dataset for Imaging and optical sensing of Aquatic environments (GLORIA) includes 7,572 curated hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance measurements at 1 nm intervals within the 350 to 900 nm wavelength range. In addition, at least one co-located water quality measurement of chlorophyll a, total suspended solids, absorption by dissolved substances, and Secchi depth, is provided. The data were contributed by researchers affiliated with 59 institutions worldwide and come from 450 different water bodies, making GLORIA the de-facto state of knowledge of in situ coastal and inland aquatic optical diversity. Each measurement is documented with comprehensive methodological details, allowing users to evaluate fitness-for-purpose, and providing a reference for practitioners planning similar measurements. We provide open and free access to this dataset with the goal of enabling scientific and technological advancement towards operational regional and global RSWQ monitoring.

Abstract

Although physical activity and sedentary behavior are moderately heritable, little is known about the mechanisms that influence these traits. Combining data for up to 703,901 individuals from 51 studies in a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies yields 99 loci that associate with self-reported moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity during leisure time (MVPA), leisure screen time (LST) and/or sedentary behavior at work. Loci associated with LST are enriched for genes whose expression in skeletal muscle is altered by resistance training. A missense variant in ACTN3 makes the alpha-actinin-3 filaments more flexible, resulting in lower maximal force in isolated type IIA muscle fibers, and possibly protection from exercise-induced muscle damage. Finally, Mendelian randomization analyses show that beneficial effects of lower LST and higher MVPA on several risk factors and diseases are mediated or confounded by body mass index (BMI). Our results provide insights into physical activity mechanisms and its role in disease prevention.

Abstract

Purpose The perspectives of children and young people with disability who experience domestic and family violence are under-researched, impeding the development of approaches that meet their needs. Knowledge gaps stem from the layered discursive positioning of disability, childhood/youth, or domestic and family violence in addition to the methodological, ethical and pragmatic complexity of research needed to understand their priorities and be attuned to their lived experience. This article explores methodological, ethical and practical challenges to centring their voices in research about domestic and family violence. Method A conceptual framework of feminist disability theory and intersectionality informed our co-designed research, across three phases: (1) quantitative large-scale data linkage and case file analysis; (2) qualitative research with children and young people, their families and service providers and (3) stakeholder engagement workshops. Results We reflect on how our research was able to prioritise the contextual agency of children and young people with disability, ways it could not, and other constraints. Conclusion Children and young people with disability experiencing domestic and family violence hold an expert and unique vantage point on what happens to them. Amplifying their priorities for directing policy and organisational change requires more of researchers in terms of methods, but also more flexibility in how projects are funded to enable creativity and innovation. Abstract

Peatland pools are unvegetated, inundated depressions that cover up to 30 % of the surface of many temperate and boreal peatlands and that are net carbon (C) sources within C-accumulating ecosystems. The emission of carbon dioxide (CO 2) and methane (CH 4) from peatland pools comes from the degradation of organic matter (OM) that comprises the surrounding matrix. It is, however, not clear how decomposition rates in pools, which define their function and distinguish them from other aquatic ecosystems, vary spatially and what mechanisms drive these variations. We first quantified rates of OM decomposition from fresh litter at different depths in six pools of distinct morphological characteristics in a temperate ombrotrophic peatland using litterbags of Sphagnum capillifolium and Typha latifolia over a 27-month period. Rates of decomposition were faster for T. latifolia than S. capillifolium and, overall, faster at the pool surface and decreased with increasing depth. We then measured potential CO 2 and CH 4 production from the sediments of the same six pools by performing 35 d laboratory incubations. Pool sediment chemistry was variable among pools and influenced the production of CH 4 and CO 2 from sediments, with decreasing CO 2 production with increasing OM humification and decreasing CH 4 production with increasing nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio. Both CH 4 production and CO 2 production from pool sediments were higher in the 1 m deep pools but similar in the shallow < 1 and the > 1.5 m deep pools. When combining both experiments, our results indicate that OM decomposition in peatland pools is highly variable and mostly related to the environmental conditions in which it occurs as a function of general pool depth rather than to OM chemistry. Abstract

Background: Traditional models of palliative care have been tested by the challenges of caring for increasing numbers of people at the end stages of a chronic non-malignant illness. The COVID-19 pandemic and consequent reliance on telehealth services, has enabled the development of creative models of care. Aims: To improve home-based palliative care for people with chronic illness using telehealth, and this was demonstrated using quality-of-life measures. Methods: A total of 35 non-cancer referrals to a community palliative care service were recommended for the pilot project, with one specialist palliative care nurse as their contact. All were offered a telehealth service with a specially designed app to self-monitor their symptoms, a session on advance care directives, and self-rated quality-of-life measures using the RAND 36-Item Health Survey (Version 1.0), consisting of 36 items that cover nine domains. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. Findings: Over the 21 months of the pilot study, 13 people chose to participate in the pilot. For participants, telehealth meant more control over their symptoms, fewer emergency presentations and appointment travel time was alleviated. Quality-of-life surveys highlighted physical impairments, which did not change over time. Conclusion: This pilot programme demonstrated an innovative approach to addressing the demands of people dying of chronic illness, with further work required to explore the place of telehealth consultations in the overall healthcare system. 46. Tracking a novel cyanobacterium bloom in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, U.S.A., during the summer and fall of 2020

Abstract

A bloom of an unidentified nano-sized cyanobacterium (~3-4 μm x 5 μm) was observed in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) system, Florida, U.S.A. from August through December 2020, causing greenish water discoloration. Enumeration by light microscopy revealed concentrations of > 106 cells mL-1 in the northern and central IRL proper, Banana River Lagoon, and Mosquito Lagoon (maximum of 3 x 106 cells mL-1). Bloom concentrations (2 x 105 cells mL-1) were first observed in the northern IRL and Banana River where it persisted longer than in other basins, but cell abundance rapidly declined throughout the system as water temperatures decreased in December. Inspection of archived samples suggested this taxon had been in the system since at least late June. Bloom development and decline was readily observed by satellite imagery (Sentinel-2, Landsat-8). Cells were round to oblong, often with two or more cells aligned in a chain. Live cells had an elongated aerotope that became inconspicuous upon preservation. Flow cytometry indicated that this cyanobacterium had low chlorophyll a and high phycocyanin-like fluorescence. Toxin analysis at five time points between 9/24 and 12/03 returned non-detected concentrations of anatoxin-a and cylindrospermopsin, trace levels of total microcystin-LR in four samples, and saxitoxin in three samples; these positive results are likely unrelated to the cyanobacterium bloom. Direct sequencing followed by PacBio 16S amplicon sequencing revealed a novel cyanobacterial ribotype in bloom samples (i.e., >75% of 16S amplicons). A complete metagenome assembled genome was retrieved and phylogenetic analysis placed this organism adjacent to Prochlorothrix hollandica, although within a clade and tree that encompasses large genetic distances between taxa indicating that specific evolutionary and ecological affinities must be interpreted with caution.

48. Take notice, believe us and act! Exploring the safety of children and young people in government run organisations : A report for the Tasmanian Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's responses to child sexual abuse in institutional settings

Abstract

[Extract] In 2021, the Tasmanian Commission of Inquiry was established to consider the Tasmanian Government’s responses to allegations and incidents of child sexual abuse in government institutions and those funded to provide services on its behalf. The Commission was established as a response to serious allegations of child sexual abuse in Tasmanian schools, Ashley Youth Detention and Launceston General Hospital. The Commission aimed to understand Tasmanian children and young people’s contemporary experiences of government-run and government-funded services and to use those findings to inform recommendations about how institutions and systems might better prevent and respond to harm. The Commission engaged researchers from the Institute of Child Protection Studies, Australian Catholic University to conduct a study which aimed to work with Tasmanian children and young people to explore: • how safe they feel in key government institutions • features of an organisation that increase or decrease their feelings of safety • the extent to which they feel confident raising safety concerns • how they would raise these concerns (if inclined), to whom and what influences these decisions • their level of awareness and understanding of high-risk, harmful or potentially grooming behaviours by adults in an institutional setting (including through online mechanisms) • their level of awareness and understanding of harmful sexual behaviours that other children and young people may exhibit. This report provides an overview of the major themes emerging from interviews and focus groups with 59 Tasmanian children and young people who attended primary and secondary school and college, had spent time at Ashley Youth Detention Centre, had lived in out of home care and/or had spent time in hospital.
