Abstract Renewable energy sources (RESs) have become integral components of power grids, yet their integration presents challenges such as system inertia losses and mismatches between load demand and generation capacity. These issues jeopardize grid stability. To address this, an effective approach is proposed, combining enhanced load frequency control (LFC) (i.e., fuzzy PID- T $${I}^{\lambda }{D}^{\mu }$$ I λ D μ ) with controlled energy storage systems, specifically controlled redox flow batteries (CRFBs), to mitigate uncertainties arising from RES integration. The optimization of this strategy's parameters is achieved using the crayfish optimization algorithm (COA), known for its global optimization capabilities and balance between exploration and exploitation. Performance evaluation against conventional controllers (PID, FO-PID, FO-(PD-PI)) confirms the superiority of the proposed approach in LFC. Extensive testing under various load disturbances, high renewables penetration, and communication delays ensures its effectiveness in minimizing disruptions. Validation using a standardized IEEE 39-bus system further demonstrates its efficiency in power networks grappling with significant renewables penetration. In summary, this integrated strategy presents a robust solution for modern power systems adapting to increasing renewable energy utilization.

In Egypt, the production of power and the associated environmental problems are starting to take the stage. One environmentally responsible way to lessen the power crisis is to employ renewable energy sources effectively and efficiently. This paper proposes to develop a hydrogen energy storage-based green (or environmentally friendly) power plant on many Egyptian cities such as Sohag city. To produce green hydrogen, the proposed power station uses energy storage, solar, and wind power. Energy storage systems are used to store extra energy produced by wind turbines and solar panels and to supply energy when the output of renewable energy is low. An optimized design of the proposed power plant uses hydrogen energy to satisfy peak load requirements and reduce GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions. Electrolysis is the method used in the proposed solar/wind power plant to create hydrogen. Water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis, a process that uses electricity. Renewable energy sources can be used to power this procedure, ensuring that the hydrogen produced is “green” and does not contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The design of the power plant incorporates advanced electrolysis technology, such as proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, which are efficient and well-suited for integrating with renewable energy sources.

This study presents the tilt integral derivative (TID) controller technique for controlling the speed of BLDC motors in order to improve the real-time control of brushless direct current motors in electric vehicles. The TID controller is applied to the considered model to enhance its performance, e.g., torque and speed. This control system manages the torque output, speed, and position of the motor to ensure precise and efficient operation in EV applications. Brushless direct current motors are becoming more and more popular due to their excellent torque, power factor, efficiency, and controllability. The differences between PID, TID, and PI controllers are compared. The outcomes demonstrated that the TID control enhanced the torque and current stability in addition to the BLDC system’s capacity to regulate speed. TID controllers provide better input power for BLDC (brushless DC) drives than PI and PID controllers do. Better transient responsiveness and robustness to disturbances are features of TID controller design, which can lead to more effective use of input power. TID controllers are an advantageous choice for BLDC drive applications because of their increased performance, which can result in increased system responsiveness and overall efficiency. In an experimental lab, a BLDC motor drive prototype is implemented in this study. To fully enhance the power electronic subsystem and the brushless DC motor’s real-time performance, a test bench was also built.

A reduced power system’s inertia represents a big issue for high penetration levels of renewable generation sources. Recently, load frequency controllers (LFCs) and their design have become crucial factors for stability and supply reliability. Thence, a new optimized multiloop fractional LFC scheme is provided in this paper. The proposed multiloop LFC scheme presents a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) structure using the tilt–integral–derivatives with filter (TIDN) in the first stage and the tilt–derivative with filter (TDN) in the second stage. The employment of two different loops achieves better disturbance rejection capability using the proposed 2DOF TIDN-TDN controller. The proposed 2DOF TIDN-TDN method is optimally designed using the recent powerful marine predator optimizer algorithm (MPA). The proposed design method eliminates the need for precise modeling of power systems, complex control design theories, and complex disturbance observers and filter circuits. A multisourced two-area interlinked power grid is employed as a case study in this paper by incorporating renewable generation with multifunctionality electric vehicle (EV) control and contribution within the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) concept. The proposed 2DOF TIDN-TDN LFC is compared with feature-related LFCs from the literature, such as TID, FOTID, and TID-FOPIDN controllers. Better mitigated frequency and tie-line power fluctuations, faster response, lower overshot/undershot values, and shorter settling time are the proven features of the proposed 2DOF TIDN-TDN LFC method.

In this paper, an effective frequency control strategy is proposed for emulating sufficient inertia power and improving frequency stability. The developed technique is based on applying virtual inertia control (VIC) with superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) instead of a traditional energy storage system (ESS) to compensate for the system inertia during the high penetration of renewable energy sources, taking into account the role of the controller in the secondary control loop (SCL). Unlike previous studies that depended on the designer experience in selecting the parameters of the inertia gain or the parameters of the SMES technology, the parameters of the proposed strategy are selected using optimization techniques. Moreover, an improved optimization algorithm called Improved Social Network Search algorithm (ISNS) is proposed to select the optimal parameters of the proposed control strategy. Moreover, the ISNS is improved to overcome the demerits of the traditional SNS algorithm, such as low speed convergence and global search capability. Accordingly, the ISNS algorithm is applied to a hybrid two-area power grid to determine the optimal parameters of the proposed control technique as follows: the proportional-integral derivative (PID) controller in the SCL. Additionally, the ISNS is applied to select the optimal control gains of the VIC-based SMES technology (e.g., the inertia gain, the proportional gain of the SMES, and the negative feedback gain of the SMES). Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed ISNS algorithm is validated by comparing its performance with that of the traditional SNS algorithm and other well-known algorithms (i.e., PSO, TSA, GWO, and WHO) considering different standard benchmark functions. Formerly, the effectiveness of the proposed frequency control technique was confirmed by comparing its performance with the system performance based on optimal VIC with ESS as well as without VIC considering different operating situations. The simulation results demonstrated the superiority of the proposed technique over other considered techniques, especially during high penetration of renewable power and lack of system inertia. As a result, the proposed technique is credible for modern power systems that take into account RESs.

This study presents an innovative strategy for load frequency control (LFC) using a combination structure of tilt-derivative and tilt-integral gains to form a TD-TI controller. Furthermore, a new improved optimization technique, namely the quantum chaos game optimizer (QCGO) is applied to tune the gains of the proposed combination TD-TI controller in two-area interconnected hybrid power systems, while the effectiveness of the proposed QCGO is validated via a comparison of its performance with the traditional CGO and other optimizers when considering 23 bench functions. Correspondingly, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is validated by comparing its performance with other controllers, such as the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller based on different optimizers, the tilt-integral-derivative (TID) controller based on a CGO algorithm, and the TID controller based on a QCGO algorithm, where the effectiveness of the proposed TD-TI controller based on the QCGO algorithm is ensured using different load patterns (i.e., step load perturbation (SLP), series SLP, and random load variation (RLV)). Furthermore, the challenges of renewable energy penetration and communication time delay are considered to test the robustness of the proposed controller in achieving more system stability. In addition, the integration of electric vehicles as dispersed energy storage units in both areas has been considered to test their effectiveness in achieving power grid stability. The simulation results elucidate that the proposed TD-TI controller based on the QCGO controller can achieve more system stability under the different aforementioned challenges.

This study proposes a new optimization technique, known as the eagle strategy arithmetic optimization algorithm (ESAOA), to address the limitations of the original algorithm called arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA). ESAOA is suggested to enhance the implementation of the original AOA. It includes an eagle strategy to avoid premature convergence and increase the populations’ efficacy to reach the optimum solution. The improved algorithm is utilized to fine-tune the parameters of the fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) and the PID controllers for supporting the frequency stability of a hybrid two-area multi-sources power system. Here, each area composites a combination of conventional power plants (i.e., thermal-hydro-gas) and renewable energy sources (i.e., wind farm and solar farm). Furthermore, the superiority of the proposed algorithm has been validated based on 23 benchmark functions. Then, the superiority of the proposed FOPID-based ESAOA algorithm is verified through a comparison of its performance with other controller performances (i.e., PID-based AOA, PID-based ESAOA, and PID-based teaching learning-based optimization TLBO) under different operating conditions. Furthermore, the system nonlinearities, system uncertainties, high renewable power penetration, and control time delay has been considered to ensure the effectiveness of the proposed FOPID based on the ES-AOA algorithm. All simulation results elucidate that the domination in favor of the proposed FOPID-based ES-AOA algorithm in enhancing the frequency stability effectually will guarantee a reliable performance.
