Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is increasingly gaining interest not only for its applicative potentialities but also for providing an understanding of the excited state properties of chiral molecules. However, applications of CPL are mainly in the field of materials science: special organic molecules and polymers, metal (lanthanide) complexes, and organic dyes are actively and intensely studied. So far natural compounds have not been investigated much. We fill the gap here by measuring circular dichroism (CD) and CPL of lycorine and narciclasine, the most abundant known alkaloid and isocarbostyril from Amaryllidaceae, which exhibit a large spectrum of biological activities and are promising anticancer compounds. Dual fluorescence detection in narciclasine led us to unveil an occurring excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, this mechanism well accounts for the Stokes shift and CPL spectra observed in narciclasine. The same molecule is interesting also as a pH chiroptical switch. Both in absorption and emission, lycorine and narciclasine are also studied computationally via density functional theory (DFT) calculations further shedding light on their properties. Natural resources are strategic resources. They are becoming increasingly important in policies combating climate change. Moreover, their protection and enhancement are fundamental for actions of sustainable development. The paper analyses specific types of natural resources (soil, water and energy) and identifies their potential contribution to local development in a perspective of reduced environmental loads. General attention to the three systems of resources is evidenced by the development of research based on the FEW Nexus model which, since the 1970s, has explored the connections existing between them, as well as the development of parallel research lines. The latter can directly impact on regional planning and bring about necessary changes in currently applied plans so as to adapt them to evolving circumstances. A case study of interest is the area of Avellino, one of the inland provinces of Campania. The paper shows that the regional planning tool for the province only partially considers such resources, failing to assign to them any strategic importance. This may be considered a weakness both in regional planning and in land management because it excludes in advance, from analyses and forecasts, resources that can make a major contribution to the sustainable economic development of the province. Nowadays, due to the problematic containment of pollutant emissions worldwide, the process of global warming is inevitable. Moreover, in urban environments, due to the strong anthropisation of the spatial context, these phenomena are often accentuated (e.g. urban heat islands). At the same time, the detrimental effects of the aforementioned process are often combined with other pre-existing risks linked to urbanisation in areas of high natural risk (e.g. hydrogeological and volcanic risk). In this context, the first examples of the application of measures for adaptation and mitigation of climate change in urban areas are recorded in formulating the latest generation of urban plans. In this respect, natural-based solutions (NBS) are becoming favoured. These measures have a twofold beneficial effect on the urban reality, i.e., adaptation to the effects of climate change and increased renaturalisation of the urban area, with consequent mitigation of other natural hazards. The present contribution aims to offer an analysis of the main NBSs applicable in an urban context and on different scales (from urban to building) and an applicative example related to their integration into territorial governance tools. In particular, the municipality of Cercola, a territorial context with a high natural risk in the Vesuvian area, has been analysed as a case study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this case study, we describe a 21-year-old man with erythropoietic protoporphyria who sought medical attention in April 2022 for diffuse edema and erythema of the hands. These symptoms had been present since childhood and usually occurred soon after sun exposure. The patient's medical history showed that chromosome 18's long arm had partially deleted. We performed a number of tests, including measuring total erythrocyte protoporphyrin levels and utilizing a spectrofluorometer to assess the fluorometric emission peak of plasma porphyrins, based on the patient's medical history and clinical symptoms. Furthermore, a genetic analysis identified an intronic variant on one allele, c.315-48T>C (IVS3- 48T>C), which is categorized as a susceptibility polymorphism, and a complete deletion of the ferrochelatase gene on the other allele. The patient's clinical condition improved following the June 2022 afamelanotide implant procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the aim of finding and characterizing new simple organic molecules (SOM) generating circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), we test here nine [2]paracyclo[2](5,8)‐quinoliphane derivatives, whose circular dichroism (CD) spectra were previously measured at short wavelengths in a study encompassing also OR and VCD (CD in the IR). Completion of the CD spectra is carried out with attention paid to weaker and longer wavelength features. The observed signs of the CPL spectra are compared to the signs of the CD band at the longest wavelength and are found coincident except in two cases. The magnitudes of dissymmetry ratios g in luminescence are of the order 10−3, like the corresponding |g| values for the absorption case. TD‐DFT calculations for the two simplest cases provide details on the molecular orbitals involved in the transitions responsible for the observed signals of these molecules. The calculations allow us to provide also a first explanation of the two observed behaviors of the |glum|/|gabs| ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
