Palm oil accounts for about 40% of the global demand of vegetable oil. To meet the demand, oil palm plantations have expanded in the humid tropics at the expense of tropical forests. Land conversion begins with clear cutting and generates much woody debris, which was stacked in rows. Woody debris decomposes and emits carbon dioxide (CO2), but the time course of the decomposition is not well understood, especially at the early stage. Thus, we measured carbon (C) stock in woody debris in a newly established plantation after clear cutting of a secondary peat swamp forest in Sarawak, Malaysia. A litter bag method was applied to examine the decomposition of woody debris scattered on the ground. Also, we periodically measured apparent cross-sectional area (ACSA) of a stacking row (about 5 m wide and 90 m long) assuming that the cross-sectional form was triangular. The C stock of the stacking row was estimated from ACSA and measured C fractions using a significant sigmoidal relationship. The decomposition rate constants (k) for C content were determined to be 0.231-0.313 yr-1 for ground woody debris and 0.459 yr-1 for stacked woody debris. In addition, the total decomposition of the aboveground woody debris proceeded according to another k of 0.440 yr-1 during the experimental period of 740 days. The total C stock of aboveground woody debris was 48.4 Mg C ha-1 at the beginning of the field experiment, about 16 months after clear cutting. The C stock accounted for 63% of the C of forest aboveground biomass. Despite the uncertainty in the spatial representativeness, we think that simply measurable ACSA is useful to quantify the C stock of stacked woody debris. The technique could be applicable to large-area estimation using drone technology.

Recent studies have suggested that in certain environments, tree stems emit methane (CH₄). This study explored the mechanism of CH₄ emission from the stem surfaces of Alnus japonica in a riparian wetland. Stem CH₄ emission rates and sap flux were monitored year-round, and fine-root anatomy was investigated. CH₄ emission rates were estimated using a closed-chamber method. Sap flux was measured using Granier-type thermal dissipation probes. Root anatomy was studied using both optical and cryo-scanning electron microscopy. CH₄ emissions during the leafy season exhibited a diurnally changing component superimposed upon an underlying continuum in which the diurnal variation was in phase with sap flux. We propose a model in which stem CH₄ emission involves at least two processes: a sap flux-dependent component responsible for the diurnal changes, and a sap flux-independent component responsible for the background continuum. The contribution ratios of the two processes are season-dependent. The background continuum possibly resulted from the diffusive transport of gaseous CH₄ from the roots to the upper trunk. Long-lasting fear-related disorders depend on the excessive retention of traumatic fear memory. We previously showed that the palmitoylation-dependent removal of synaptic α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) receptors prevents hyperexcitation-based epileptic seizures and that AMPA receptor palmitoylation maintains neural network stability. In this study, AMPA receptor subunit GluA1 C-terminal palmitoylation-deficient (GluA1C811S) mice were subjected to comprehensive behavioral battery tests to further examine whether the mutation causes other neuropsychiatric disease-like symptoms. The behavioral analyses revealed that palmitoylation-deficiency in GluA1 is responsible for characteristic prolonged contextual fear memory formation, whereas GluA1C811S mice showed no impairment of anxiety-like behaviors at the basal state. In addition, fear generalization gradually increased in these mutant mice without affecting their cued fear. Furthermore, fear extinction training by repeated exposure of mice to conditioned stimuli had little effect on GluA1C811S mice, which is in line with augmentation of synaptic transmission in pyramidal neurons in the basolateral amygdala. In contrast, locomotion, sociability, depression-related behaviors, and spatial learning and memory were unaffected by the GluA1 non-palmitoylation mutation. These results indicate that impairment of AMPA receptor palmitoylation specifically causes posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms.

Tropical peat swamp forests that started to experience fires in the 1960s in Sumatra and in the 1980s in Kalimantan are now seriously degraded in many places in Indonesia. But from a longer perspective, we can see the tropical peat swamp forests’ resilience and adaptation. There have been several reports on how deep local knowledge has helped curb further degradation of these forests. Large-scale commercial logging had been undertaken in the Riau area in Sumatra in the 1860s; however, no serious peatland degradation and large-scale fires were reported until the end of the colonial era. Truly serious degradation started only in the middle of the 1980s when large-scale drainage systems were created to support the extensive cultivation of oil palm and timber plantations. Serious fires broke out in 1997, and in 2015 at the time of El Niño. Today only 18.4% of total peatlands in Indonesia are undisturbed natural peatland forests. We also find several initiatives to restore degraded peatlands. For one thing, the government has established the Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG) to coordinate the acceleration of peatland restoration and promote the welfare of local people in the peatland area. For another, international organizations, companies, nongovernment organizations, and local communities also have started their respective programs to rehabilitate the peatlands. Such developments can be interpreted as attempts at transformation, that is, the creation of a fundamentally new system in response to ecological, economic, or social (including political) conditions that render the existing system untenable. This volume intends to reshape the discussion on peatland degradation and regeneration with the ideas of vulnerability, resilience, adaptability and transformation, and deepen the understanding of degradation and regeneration.

Termites are the major ecosystem service providers and contribute significantly to soil processes and nutrient cycling in tropical ecosystems. The ecological services provided by termites are often discredited due to their commonly-regarded status as pest in human-dominated landscapes, however. In order to understand the potential roles of termites in peatland ecosystems, termite samplings were conducted in abandoned degraded peatland and peatland cultivated with oil palm in Riau, Sumatra. Surveys found a total of six species of termite of the family Rhinotermitidae. (rhinotermitid) in study plots of disturbed lands. In particular, Coptotermes spp. are notorious pests to oil palm, and may also be a potential pest in indigenous tree replanting programs. Based on analysis of termite feeding groups and documentation of wood susceptibility to termite attack, this study provides a reference of tree species that must be avoided in indigenous tree replanting programs so that the trophic relations of termite populations are of most benefit to peatland soil biodiversity and thereby to resilient peatland ecosystems.

In this multi-messenger astronomy era, all the observational probes are improving their sensitivities and overall performance. The Focusing on Relativistic universe and Cosmic Evolution (FORCE) mission, the product of a JAXA/NASA collaboration, will reach a 10 times higher sensitivity in the hard X-ray band ($E >$ 10~keV) in comparison with any previous hard X-ray missions, and provide simultaneous soft X-ray coverage. FORCE aims to be launched in the early 2030s, providing a perfect hard X-ray complement to the ESA flagship mission Athena. FORCE will be the most powerful X-ray probe for discovering obscured/hidden black holes and studying high energy particle acceleration in our Universe and will address how relativistic processes in the universe are realized and how these affect cosmic evolution. FORCE, which will operate over 1--79 keV, is equipped with two identical pairs of supermirrors and wideband X-ray imagers. The mirror and imager are connected by a high mechanical stiffness extensible optical bench with alignment monitor systems with a focal length of 12~m. Joubert syndrome (JS) is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by lower brainstem dysplasia and cerebellar vermis agenesis termed molar tooth sign (MTS), psychomotor retardation, abnormal respiratory pattern in infancy, and oculomotor abnormalities. Arima syndrome (AS), which is a severe form of JS, is characterized by severe psychomotor retardation, congenital visual impairment, progressive renal dysfunction, and lower brainstem dysplasia from early infancy. Numerous patients with AS expire in early childhood. Recently, c.6012–12T> A in the CEP290 gene was reported as a specific variant of AS. Herein, we report the cases of two siblings showing a phenotype of JS with compound heterozygous mutations (c.6012–12T > A / c.5924delT) in the CEP290 gene. The older sister (aged 19 years) had hypotonia, hypertelorism, and anteverted nares since birth. As a neonate, she developed a transient abnormal respiratory pattern and nystagmus, and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed MTS. The younger sister (aged 13 years) exhibited mild hypotonia and pendular nystagmus as a neonate; MRI revealed MTS. Both sisters had psychomotor retardation, oculomotor dysfunction, and bilateral renal cysts with normal renal function. They can walk and have simple conversation. They do not meet the diagnostic criteria for AS, and their symptoms were milder than those of previously reported cases with this specific mutation. This report indicates the expanding spectrum of the CEP290 variant.

Synapse formation and functioning are vital for neural network development. Astrocytes ensheathing synapses enable appropriate synapse functioning through glutamate clearance from the synaptic cleft; however, it remains unclear how astrocytic glutamate transporter proteins function at peri-synaptic contact. Here, we report that down syndrome cell adhesion molecule (DSCAM) in Purkinje cells controls climbing fiber (CF) synaptogenesis in the developing cerebellum. Dscam-mutant mice mimicked loss-of-function mutations in the astrocytic glutamate transporter GLAST expressed in Bergmann glia. These mice showed impaired glutamate clearance by the delocalization of GLAST, which complexed with the extracellular domain of DSCAM. Riluzole-induced reduction of free glutamate at the synaptic cleft rescued the impairment of CF synapse formation in Purkinje cell-selective Dscam-deficient mice. DSCAM was required for motor learning, but not gross motor coordination. In conclusion, the intercellular association of synaptic and astrocyte proteins in the tripartite synapse is critical for synapse formation and functioning in neural transmission.

Site-dependent local spin susceptibility is investigated with $^{125}$Te nuclear magnetic resonance in a Weyl semimetal WTe$_2$. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1T$ shows a dependence of the square of temperature $T$ at high temperatures, followed by a constant behavior below 50 K. The temperature dependence features Weyl fermions appearing around the linearly crossing bands. The Knight shift $K$ scales to the square root of $1/T_1T$, corroborating a predominant spin contribution in low-lying excitation. The observed dependence of $K$ and $1/T_1T$ on the four Te sites shows the site-dependent electron correlation and density of states. The angular profile of the NMR spectrum gives the anisotropic hyperfine coupling tensor, consistent with $5p$ hole occupations on Te sites., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

To clarify the relationship between structural and functional changes in the brains of patients with Rett syndrome (RTT) using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).Nine subjects with typical RTT (RTTs) and an equal number of healthy controls (HCs) underwent structural MRI, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). The measurements obtained from each modality were statistically compared between RTTs and HCs and examined for their correlation with the clinical severity of RTTs.Structural MRI imaging revealed volume reductions in most cortical and subcortical regions of the brain. Remarkable volume reductions were observed in the frontal and parietal lobes, cerebellum, and subcortical regions including the putamen, hippocampus, and corpus callosum. DTI analysis revealed decreased white matter integrity in broad regions of the brain. Fractional anisotropy values were greatly decreased in the superior longitudinal fasciculus, corpus callosum, and middle cerebellar peduncle. Rs-fMRI analysis showed decreased functional connectivity in the interhemispheric dorsal attention network, and between the visual and cerebellar networks. The clinical severity of RTTs correlated with the volume reduction of the frontal lobe and cerebellum, and with changes in DTI indices in the fronto-occipital fasciculus, corpus callosum, and cerebellar peduncles.Regional volume and white matter integrity of RTT brains were reduced in broad areas, while most functional connections remained intact. Notably, two functional connectivities, between cerebral hemispheres and between the cerebrum and cerebellum, were decreased in RTT brains, which may reflect the structural changes in these brain regions.

A new oxyhydride CaVO3-xHx with ordered hydride anions was synthesized by topochemical reaction between hydrogen gas and oxygen-deficient perovskite, CaVO3-δ with ordered oxygen vacancies. The existence of hydride anions was confirmed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Hydride anions occupy the oxygen vacancy sites of CaVO3-δ, forming VO4H2 octahedra with cis-geometry and a four-row chain made of cis-VO4H2 octahedra running along the [110] direction of the cubic perovskite structure. The four-row chains are ordered in a unique manner with a long periodicity. The temperature dependence of the shift of 1H-NMR spectrum well fits to the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, which reveals that hydride anions monitor the magnetic property of this oxyhydride.
