En esta investigación se evaluó la cinética de reducción de la turbidez inicial (1455 UNT) de aguas residuales de una industria curtiembre mediante la aplicación de biofloculantes directos elaborados a partir del alga Chondracanthus chamissoi (alginato) y de las mudas del crustáceo Emerita analoga (quitosano). Se recolecto el material biológico precursor en las playas de Lima, Perú, a partir de este material; se produjo ácido algínico fibroso y posteriormente alginato de sodio. Se usaron los procesos de desmineralización, desproteinización y posterior desacetilación para obtener el quitosano a partir de las mudas del crustáceo. Se evaluó el efecto del pH, la dosis de los biofloculantes, el tiempo de equilibrio del proceso. Además, se determinó el orden cinético de la velocidad de floculación mediante la prueba de jarras. Los resultados indicaron una remoción de la turbidez superior al 99 % dentro de los primeros 30 minutos para dosis de 0.2 a 2 g/l de floculantes y pH ácido (igual a 4); no se registraron diferencias significativas a distintos valores de pH (4-12) y dosis (0.2 a 2 g/l). El ajuste lineal entre el tiempo de floculación y la turbidez generó ecuaciones cinéticas significativas de primer orden para ambos floculantes con constantes de velocidad k1 del orden de 10-4 (1/NUT.min) y tiempos de reducción de la mitad de material particulado (vida media: τ1/2) inferiores a los 10 minutos. The development and commercialisation of sunflower varieties tolerant to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides some 20 years ago provided farmers with an alternative method for the cost-effective control of Orobanche cumana. In 2020, however, two independent sunflower broomrape populations from Drama (GR-DRA) and Orestiada (GR-ORE), Greece, were reported to be heavily infested with O. cumana after application of the ALS-inhibiting herbicide imazamox. Here we have investigated the race of GR-DRA and GR-ORE and determined the basis of resistance to imazamox in the two Greek O. cumana samples. Using a set of five diagnostic sunflower varieties characterised by different resistant genes with respect to O. cumana infestation, we have clearly established that the GR-ORE and GR-DRA populations belong to the invasive broomrape races G and G+, respectively. Live underground tubercles and emerged shoots were identified at the recommended field rate of imazamox for GR-DRA and GR-ORE but not for two other standard sensitive populations in a whole plant dose response test using two different herbicide-tolerant sunflower hybrids as hosts. Sequencing of the ALS gene identified an alanine 205 to aspartate mutation in all GR-ORE samples. Most GR-DRA tubercles were characterised by a second serine 653 to asparagine ALS mutation whilst a few GR-DRA individuals contained the A205D mutation. Mutations at ALS codons 205 and 653 are known to impact on the binding and efficacy of imazamox and other imidazolinone herbicides. Resumen El artículo presenta la experiencia investigativa de Ciudadanía con Sentido desde la construcción de: redes sociales comunitarias de iniciativas ciudadanas para la construcción de la cultura de paz; propuesta de formación para la apropiación de tecnologías de información y comunicación (TIC) y estrategia para el desarrollo de una plataforma digital desde una perspectiva social. Se presenta el contexto en el que se desarrolla la experiencia, en términos socio-políticos y teóricos; luego se describe la estrategia metodológica con diferentes grupos poblacionales de Medellín y, por último, los resultados en clave de una propuesta que articula el desarrollo de una plataforma digital desde una perspectiva social de formación para la apropiación de tecnologías y la construcción de iniciativas ciudadanas en comunidades vulnerables. more...

En el presente estudio se describen algunos aportes a la salud pública por parte del Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados, en sus 60 años de existencia (1961 a 2021), mediante sus potestades rectoras y operativas, en el suministro de agua para consumo humano y saneamiento en Costa Rica. Para cumplir con este objetivo, se analizará las coberturas con agua por cañería y agua de calidad potable y su relación con los indicadores “Índice de Desarrollo Humano” y la “Esperanza de Vida al Nacer”. Por otro lado, se estudia el papel del AyA en la atención de la epidemia de cólera en las Américas (1991-1998) y la importancia de las coberturas con AP en las pandemias de la Influenza A (H1N1) en el 2009, además de la importancia de la promoción de la higiene y lavado de manos en la actual crisis sanitaria de la “Covid-19” provocada por el virus “SARS-CoV-2”, con el propósito de impulsar en Costa Rica la higiene como práctica cultural. more...

Many tests are used to determine the toxic activity of miscellaneous substances, and those that are simple, fast, and inexpensive are useful for screening compounds with applications in different fields. The Cucumis sativus root growth inhibition test is an example of acute toxicity determinations. On the other hand, colchicine has been used as a herbicide to generate polyploids in plant species finally reaching the environment; for this reason, colchicine could become a point of attention in ecotoxicology. This work established that Cucumis sativus, at the colchicine binding site (CBS) in tubulin, shares 100% similarity with humans. Colchicine was docked on seven Cucumis sativus computational models of the αβ-tubulin heterodimer, allowing us to understand a possible conformation in tubulin to trigger its antimitotic effect. Furthermore, an in vitro phytotoxicity assay of colchicine-treated cucumber radicles indicated a hormetic-type concentration-dependent response with macroscopic changes in radicles and hypocotyl. These results support the highly preserved grade of tubulins in several species, and using microtubule inhibitors could require attention in ecotoxicological issues. The Cucumis sativus root growth test could help evaluate small molecules (colchicine analogs), chiefly by CBS interactions, a known druggable site, still a target in the search for antimitotic compounds. more...
