This study aimed to evaluate the ability of pentoxifylline when compared to lovastatin and chlorpromazine as nephroprotective substances in cases of renal ischemia and reperfusion syndrome (IRI). A total of 36 adult male animals were randomly allocated into four groups (untreated control group, pentoxifylline group, lovastatin group, and chlorpromazine group), each consisting of nine animals. All groups were submitted to experimental ischemia and reperfusion procedures. The animals were evaluated 24, 72 and 120 hours after IRI, including physical examinations, serum urea and creatinine measurements, as well as histopathological, morphometric, and stereological analyses of the renal tissue. Results indicated that 24 hours after IRI, only chlorpromazine was effective in controlling azotemia. At the 72-hour mark, both chlorpromazine and pentoxifylline exhibited efficacy. After 120 hours, all three substances demonstrated renal protective qualities. Pentoxifylline was the most effective in preserving the structural integrity of kidney tissue, followed by chlorpromazine. In conclusion, all three treatments (pentoxifylline, chlorpromazine, and lovastatin) were effective. Wound healing is an important and complex process, containing a multifaceted process governed by sequential yet overlapping phases. Certain treatments can optimize local physiological conditions and improve wound healing. Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are widely known for their antimicrobial activity. On the other hand, bacterial cellulose (BC) films have been used as a dressing that temporarily substitutes the skin, offering many advantages in optimizing wound healing, in addition to being highly biocompatible. Considering the promising activities of AgNP and BC films, the present study aimed to evaluate the wound healing activity in Wistar Hannover rats using a nanocomposite based on bacterial cellulose containing AgNP (AgBC). In a period of 21 days, its influence on the wound area, microbial growth, histopathological parameters, and collagen content were analyzed. In addition, toxicity indicators were assessed, such as weight gain, water consumption, and creatinine and alanine transaminase levels. After 14 days of injury, the animals treated with AgBC showed a significant increase in wound contraction. The treatment with AgBC significantly reduced the number of microbial colonies compared to other treatments in the first 48 h after the injury. At the end of the 21 experimental days, an average wound contraction rate greater than 97 % in relation to the initial area was observed, in addition to a significant increase in the amount of collagen fibers at the edge of the wounds, lower scores of necrosis, angiogenesis and inflammation, associated with no systemic toxicity. Perovskite nanocrystals hold significant promise for a wide range of applications, including solar cells, LEDs, photocatalysts, humidity and temperature sensors, memory devices, and low-cost photodetectors. Such technological potential stems from their exceptional quantum efficiency and charge carrier conduction capability. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms of photoexcitation, such as phase segregation, annealing, and ionic diffusion, remain insufficiently understood. In this context, we harnessed hyperspectral fluorescence microspectroscopy to advance our comprehension of fluorescence enhancement triggered by UV continuous-wave (cw) laser irradiation of CsPbBr 3 colloidal nanocrystal thin films. Initially, we explored the kinetics of fluorescence enhancement and observed that its efficiency (φ ph ) correlates with the laser power ( P ), following the relationship φ ph = 7.7⟨ P ⟩ 0.47±0.02 . Subsequently, we estimated the local temperature induced by the laser, utilizing the finite-difference method framework, and calculated the activation energy ( E a ) required for fluorescence enhancement to occur. Our findings revealed a very low activation energy, E a ∼ 9 kJ/mol. Moreover, we mapped the fluorescence photoenhancement by spatial scanning and real-time static mode to determine its microscale length. Below a laser power of 60 μW, the photothermal diffusion length exhibited nearly constant values of approximately (22 ± 5) μm, while a significant increase was observed at higher laser power levels. These results were ascribed to the formation of nanocrystal superclusters within the film, which involves the interparticle spacing reduction, creating the so-called quantum dot solid configuration along with laser-induced annealing for higher laser powers.

Background: Primary ureteral neoplasms are extremely rare in dogs, and ureteral involvement usually occurs owing to the invasion of renal and bladder tumors., Case Description: This case report describes a 12-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog referred to a private clinic with a six-month history of abdominal distention. A physical examination revealed mild abdominal pain. Hematological tests detected normocytic-normochromic anemia (hematocrit 33.6% [reference interval-RI: 37%-55%], red blood cells 4.93 M/µl [RI: 5.5-8.5 M/µl], and hemoglobin 12.4 g/dl [RI: 12-18.0 g/dl]). The results from the leukogram, thrombogram, renal, and hepatic panels were within the reference intervals for dogs. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a cavitary mass measuring approximately 12 cm in diameter as the largest tumor in the left abdominal region over the left hepatic lobe or mesenteric site. Chest radiography did not reveal any metastasis. Therefore, the patient underwent exploratory laparotomy, during which the left ureter was found to be affected by a 12-cm mass that adhered to the left kidney. A unilateral left ureteronephrectomy was performed, and histology and immunohistochemistry (IHC) confirmed well-differentiated primary ureteral leiomyosarcoma. The patient survived for 130 days but died of lung metastasis., Conclusion: Ureteral leiomyosarcoma should be investigated and included in the list of differential diagnoses for primary ureteral neoplasms. We report the chemical composition of the crude leaf extracts obtained from Stizophyllum perforatum (Cham.) Miers (Bignoniaceae), a simple high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) method based on mangiferin as an internal standard to quantify verbascoside, and the verbascoside acute oral toxicity and antileishmanial activity. HPLC-high-resolution mass spectrometry-DAD (HPLC-HRMS-DAD) analyses of the crude ethanol S. perforatum leaf extracts (CE-1 and CE-2) revealed that verbascoside was the major constituent in both extracts. CE-1 was purified, and verbascoside and casticin, among other compounds, were isolated. The developed HPLC-DAD method was validated and met the required standards. Investigation of the CE-2 acute toxicity indicated a lethal dose (LD 50 ) greater than 2,000 mg/kg of body weight. Both CE-1 and CE-2 exhibited antileishmanial activity. The isolated compounds, verbascoside and casticin, also displayed antileishmanial activity with effective concentrations (IC 50 ) of 6.23 and 24.20 µM against promastigote forms and 3.71 and 18.97 µM against amastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis , respectively, but they were not cytotoxic to J774A.1 macrophages. Scanning electron microscopy of the L. amazonensis promastigotes showed that the parasites became more rounded and that their plasma membrane was altered in the presence of verbascoside. Additionally, transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that vacuoles emerged, lipids accumulated, kinetoplast size increased, and interstitial extravasation occurred in L. amazonensis promastigotes exposed to verbascoside. The present study evaluated renal infection resulting from the implantation of C. tropicalis in the bladder of immunosuppressed mice. Yeasts were implanted in two manners: planktonic and via preformed biofilm on a small catheter fragment (SCF). Renal histopathology and cultures was performed 72 and 144 h after cystotomy was carried out in mice from three groups: group I contained non-contaminated mice implanted with a sterile SCF; group II mice received a sterile SCF plus a yeast suspension containing 1 × 10 7 yeasts/mL in a planktonic form; group III mice were implanted with a SCF containing preformed C. tropicalis biofilm. Viable yeasts were found in the kidneys of mice from both groups II and III. However, after 72 h the planktonic cells (group II) invaded more quickly than the sessile cells (group III). Over a longer period (144 h), group III exhibited a more invasive infection (50% of the animals presented renal infection and the renal fungal load was 3.2 log10 CFU/g tissue) than in group II, where yeasts were not found. C. tropicalis introduced into the bladder in two ways (in planktonic or biofilm form) were able to reach the kidney and establish a renal fungal infection, causing interstitial disorders. The data of the present study therefore support the hypothesis of an ascending pathway for renal infections by C. tropicalis.
