We present results from the FAOSTAT emissions shares database, covering emissions from agri-food systems and their shares to total anthropogenic emissions for 196 countries and 40 territories for the period 1990–2019. We find that in 2019, global agri-food system emissions were 16.5 (95 %; CI range: 11–22) billion metric tonnes (Gt CO2 eq. yr−1), corresponding to 31 % (range: 19 %–43 %) of total anthropogenic emissions. Of the agri-food system total, global emissions within the farm gate – from crop and livestock production processes including on-farm energy use – were 7.2 Gt CO2 eq. yr−1; emissions from land use change, due to deforestation and peatland degradation, were 3.5 Gt CO2 eq. yr−1; and emissions from pre- and post-production processes – manufacturing of fertilizers, food processing, packaging, transport, retail, household consumption and food waste disposal – were 5.8 Gt CO2 eq. yr−1. Over the study period 1990–2019, agri-food system emissions increased in total by 17 %, largely driven by a doubling of emissions from pre- and post-production processes. Conversely, the FAOSTAT data show that since 1990 land use emissions decreased by 25 %, while emissions within the farm gate increased 9 %. In 2019, in terms of individual greenhouse gases (GHGs), pre- and post-production processes emitted the most CO2 (3.9 Gt CO2 yr−1), preceding land use change (3.3 Gt CO2 yr−1) and farm gate (1.2 Gt CO2 yr−1) emissions. Conversely, farm gate activities were by far the major emitter of methane (140 Mt CH4 yr−1) and of nitrous oxide (7.8 Mt N2O yr−1). Pre- and post-production processes were also significant emitters of methane (49 Mt CH4 yr−1), mostly generated from the decay of solid food waste in landfills and open dumps. One key trend over the 30-year period since 1990 highlighted by our analysis is the increasingly important role of food-related emissions generated outside of agricultural land, in pre- and post-production processes along the agri-food system, at global, regional and national scales. In fact, our data show that by 2019, pre- and post-production processes had overtaken farm gate processes to become the largest GHG component of agri-food system emissions in Annex I parties (2.2 Gt CO2 eq. yr−1). They also more than doubled in non-Annex I parties (to 3.5 Gt CO2 eq. yr−1), becoming larger than emissions from land use change. By 2019 food supply chains had become the largest agri-food system component in China (1100 Mt CO2 eq. yr−1), the USA (700 Mt CO2 eq. yr−1) and the EU-27 (600 Mt CO2 eq. yr−1). This has important repercussions for food-relevant national mitigation strategies, considering that until recently these have focused mainly on reductions of non-CO2 gases within the farm gate and on CO2 mitigation from land use change. Background: This study investigates nursing staff perceptions regarding the impact of Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation on the quality of care within a university hospital in Palestine. The research specifically examines how the accreditation process influences nursing practices, patient results, and overall healthcare quality in a challenging environment marked by unique operational and external pressures., Methods: The study was conducted at An-Najah National University Hospital (NNUH), a university hospital in Palestine, using a cross-sectional survey design. The structured questionnaire employed in the study was based on the Donabedian model, which evaluates the process and outcome dimensions of healthcare quality influenced by JCI accreditation. The questionnaire consisted of 47 items, divided into ten main subsections. These subsections included participants' demographical information (6 items), quality measurement and analysis (4 items), leadership, commitment and support (4 items), use of data (4 items), strategic quality planning (4 items), human resources education and training (4 items), quality management (4 items), quality results (4 items), staff involvement (5 items), and benefits of accreditation (8 items). The questionnaire was rigorously designed to assess both the quality processes and quality results. The eight subscales evaluated various aspects, such as leadership commitment, strategic planning, and staff involvement. To ensure reliability, the internal consistency of the survey was confirmed with a high Cronbach's alpha score, demonstrating the tool's robustness and reliability in capturing the intended data., Results: The study of 180 nurses overwhelmingly supported the positive impact of JCI accreditation on hospital quality improvement processes. More than 90% of respondents acknowledged the role of accreditation in improving resource utilization, meeting population needs, and promoting professional standards and values ​​among staff. Statistical analyses, including Pearson correlation and stepwise regression, highlighted strong positive associations between quality process variables and quality results. In particular, leadership commitment, strategic planning, and staff engagement were found to be significant predictors of improved quality results., Conclusions: This study's findings demonstrate that JCI accreditation significantly positively impacts nurses' perceptions of care quality at NNUH. The study underscores the importance of international accreditation in driving quality improvements in healthcare, particularly in settings with unique challenges such as those faced in Palestine. In this paper, we review the derivation of the Gauss-Levenberg-Marquardt (GLM) algorithm and its extension to ensemble parameter estimation. We explore the use of graphical methods to provide insights into how the algorithm works in practice and discuss the implications of both algorithm tuning parameters and objective function construction in performance. Some insights include understanding the control of both parameter trajectory and step size for GLM as a function of tuning parameters. Furthermore, for the iterative Ensemble Smoother (iES), we discuss the importance of noise on observations and show how iES can cope with non-unique outcomes based on objective function construction. Objective: This study aimed to assess the confidence, attitude, and scientific research practices of undergraduate students of different health profession specialties., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, an online-based questionnaire was distributed as a Google Form via groups and pages of medical universities available on social media sites such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter to the second- to sixth-year students of different health profession specialties in different universities across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the period from October through December 2023 using the convenience sampling technique. The questionnaire included four parts that assessed socio-demographics and custom-designed research-related questions (6 items), perceived confidence (8 items), attitudes (14 items), and the practice in the context of scientific research and its implementation (9 items). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the variables associated with the study outcomes, including confidence, attitudes, and practice levels., Results: The study included 522 undergraduate students. The participants reported low confidence, a negative attitude, and low scientific research practice. Regression results revealed that individuals without prior research experiences were less likely to have high confidence and practice compared to those with previous research experience (OR = 0.634, 95% CI: 0.426-0.945, p = 0.025; and OR = 0.139, 95%Cl: 0.090-0.216, P<0.001, respectively). Additionally, participants who reported difficulty in differentiating between various literature resources were less likely to have high confidence and practice compared to those who reported the ability to differentiate (OR = 0.627, 95% CI: 0.42-0.935, p = 0.022, and OR = 0.370, 95%Cl: 0.237-0.579, p<0.001, respectively). Furthermore, individuals who had not taught research methods in their undergraduate studies were less likely to have high practice (OR = 0.505, 95%Cl: 0.309-0.823, p = 0.06)., Conclusions: Undergraduates of different medical specialties in the UAE demonstrated acceptable levels of confidence and attitude toward scientific research, with several areas for practice improvement. This chapter discusses the challenges and requirements of modern Research Data Management (RDM), particularly for biomedical applications in the context of high-performance computing (HPC). The FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) are of special importance. Data formats, publication platforms, annotation schemata, automated data management and staging, the data infrastructure in HPC centers, file transfer and staging methods in HPC, and the EUDAT components are discussed. Tools and approaches for automated data movement and replication in cross-center workflows are explained, as well as the development of ontologies for structuring and quality-checking of metadata in computational biomedicine. The CompBioMed project is used as a real-world example of implementing these principles and tools in practice. The LEXIS project has built a workflow-execution and data management platform that follows the paradigm of HPC-Cloud convergence for demanding Big Data applications. It is used for orchestrating workflows with YORC, utilizing the data documentation initiative (DDI) and distributed computing resources (DCI). The platform is accessed by a user-friendly LEXIS portal for workflow and data management, making HPC and Cloud Computing significantly more accessible. Checkpointing, duplicate runs, and spare images of the data are used to create resilient workflows. The CompBioMed project is completing the implementation of such a workflow, using data replication and brokering, which will enable urgent computing on exascale platforms., (© 2024. The economic and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) was integrated into a laboratory-based experiment to evaluate the feasibility and sustainability of phytoremediation of chloride-rich marine dredged sediment, using perennial reed Arundo Donax along with biomass valorization. As a prerequisite for life cycle assessments, a baseline mathematical model was developed to estimate the yields of biomass to bioenergy valorization chain including the estimation of biomass yield per m 3 sediment, bioenergy yields from valorization schemes, expected green electricity yield, and the phytoremediation time frame. This mathematical model was applied to develop a parametric life cycle inventory for two scenarios of sediment phytoremediation separately or integrated with biomass valorization, for LCA and further sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. Comparative LCA unveiled that the cost and environmental impacts of annual phytoremediation of 1m 3 sediment alone or integrated with biomass valorization are much inferior to the corresponding sediment landfill as the inevitable alternative approach for sediment management. With the chloride bioaccumulation capacity of 9940 mg per kg dry biomass of A. donax, the phytoremediation of sediment with chloride concentration higher than 1650 mg/kg may not be achievable in a realistic time frame. Due to the importance of considering sediment depth and the effectiveness of the plant rooting system in estimating the performance of phytoremediation and the time frame, the volume of sediment (1m 3 ) is a more appropriate functional unit than the surface area (ha) for LCA studies of phytoremediation. In addition, considering the volume of sediment as a functional unit retains comparability to other valorization scenarios such as sediment incorporation in cementitious matrices and management scenarios such as landfill, which are generally expressed on a volume or mass basis. Objective: This study evaluated the relationship between life events, perceived social support, and depressive features among people with diabetes., Methods: This study was a cross-sectional design using convenience sampling. Questionnaires were distributed to targeted patients in primary health care services in the Nablus district., Questionnaires Used Were: The Holmes-Rahe Stress Inventory Scale, The Beck Depression Inventory, and The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support., Results: About 120 diabetic patients participated in this study. Findings revealed that higher diabetes mellitus prevalence was among older ages (39.2% are 60 years or older). More than half of the participants were smokers. Regarding life events, 53.3% of the patients have a 50% chance of developing major breakdowns in the next two years. Depression was found to be normal among 32.5% of participants, while 22.5% were moderately depressed. Introduction: Clinical training allows nursing students to acquire and strengthen their psychomotor abilities, which is an important component of nursing education. The clinical components of nursing training programs were much more demanding than the academic ones., Purposes: The purpose of this study was to examine sources of stress-related and coping behaviors during first clinical training among nursing students in the Arab American University., Methods: The study was cross-sectional and conducted with a convenience sample of 266 participants of nursing students. Data collection was performed by "Perceived Stress Scale and the Coping Behavior Inventory." The data were analyzed by using the descriptive, that is, frequency and percentage, mean, and standard deviation., Results: The results revealed that the perceived stress mean was 41.2 ( SD  = 19.5). The main stressors were taking care of the patients ( M  = 11.4 ± 0.85) and teachers and nursing staff ( M  = 8.32 ± 5.3). Coping behaviors mean was ( M  = 29.0 ± 15.2). The main coping behavior was problem-solving ( M  = 9.5 ± 5.6)., Conclusion: The study confirmed that students perceived moderate levels of stress in their first clinical training, and the most common sources of stress were taking care of the patients and teachers and nursing staff. The integrated life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle cost assessment (LCC) and laboratory-based experimental assessment were applied to provide insight for early stage decision-making on the valorization of the dredged sediments. The objective was to find a viable and sustainable solution for the valorization of the dredged sediment in concrete, holding up a certain level of standard concrete performance without compromising in terms of economy and environment. For the sensitivity analysis, parametric life cycle inventories were developed to assess the sensitivity of environmental and economic costs to the rate of sand substitution by sediment, as well as the variations in the concrete components. The workability of fresh concrete and the compressive strength of hardened concrete at 28 days were assigned as the quality indicators to evaluate the influence of sand substitution by sediment on the concrete performance. The compressive strength evaluation in the laboratory demonstrated that a maximum rate of sand substitution in concrete up to 40 % by predominantly sandy sediment could sustain the concrete strength class. However, LCA and LCC negated the rate of sand substitution by sediment higher than 20 %. The integrated environmental, economic, and experimental assessments demonstrated that the substitution of sand by predominantly fine sediment downgrades the strength class of concrete, even in the low rate of incorporation (10 %) and increases the environmental and economic costs. Inferred from the results, the maximum rate of sustainable sand substitution by sediment in concrete could be optimized through a compromise between the expected mechanical strength and workability of the concrete, the economic and environmental impacts of the superplasticiser and the sediment transport. The global food system, and animal agriculture in particular, is a major and growing contributor to climate change, land system change, biodiversity loss, water consumption and contamination, and environmental pollution. The copious production and consumption of animal products are also contributing to increasingly negative public health outcomes, particularly in wealthy and rapidly industrializing countries, and result in the slaughter of trillions of animals each year. These impacts are motivating calls for reduced reliance on animal-based products and increased use of replacement plant-based products. However, our understanding of how the production and consumption of animal products, as well as plant-based alternatives, interact with important dimensions of human and environment systems is incomplete across space and time. This inhibits comprehensively envisioning global and regional food system transitions and planning to manage the costs and synergies thereof.
