Formaldehyde (FA) is a reactive toxic volatile organic compound (VOC), produced both exogenously from the environment and endogenously within most organisms, and poses significant health risks to humans at elevated concentrations. Consequently, the development of reliable and sensitive FA sensing technologies is crucial for environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and public health protection. This review will provide a concise overview of FA sensing methodologies, highlighting key principles, sensing mechanisms, and recent advancements. The main aim of this review article is to comprehensively discuss recent advancements in FA sensors utilizing small molecules, nanoparticles, organic materials, and polymers, along with their successful applications across various fields, with particular emphasis on in situ FA sensing using polymeric probes due to their advantages over small molecular probes. Additionally, it will discuss prospects for future design and research in this area. We anticipate that this article will aid in the development of next-generation polymeric FA sensing probed with improved physicochemical properties. Purpose: Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer occurs in digestive organs such as the stomach, colon, liver, esophagus, and pancreas. About 83,034 cases occurred in Korea alone in 2020. Dietary factors, alcohol consumption, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), and lifestyle factors increase the incidence of diseases such as gastritis, peptic ulcer, pancreatitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can develop into GI cancer. However, in 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration announced that the drugs ranitidine and nizatidine, which are used for digestive disorders, contain carcinogens. In this study, we investigated the effects of ranitidine and nizatidine on the development of GI cancer. Materials and methods: In this study, using National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) version 2.5 (updated from 2002 to 2019), subjects who developed GI cancer were enrolled in the case group, and those who were at risk of, but did not develop, cancer were enrolled in the control group. Thereafter, risk-set matching was performed (1:3 ratio) by sex and age at the time of diagnosis of cancer in the case group. Through this procedure, 22,931 cases and 68,793 controls were identified. The associations of ranitidine and/or nizatidine with GI cancer were confirmed by adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) calculated through conditional logistic regression analysis. Results: The aORs of ranitidine and/or nizatidine users were lower than those of nonusers in all average prescription days groups (< 30 days/year: aOR [95% CI] = 0.79 [0.75-0.82]; 30-59 days/year: aOR [95% CI] = 0.66 [0.59-0.73]; 60-89 days/year: aOR [95% CI] = 0.69 [0.59-0.81]; ≥ 90 days/year: aOR [95% CI] = 0.69 [0.59-0.79]). Sensitivity analyses were conducted with different lag periods for the onset of GI cancer after drug administration, and these analyses yielded consistent results. Additional analyses were also performed by dividing subjects into groups based on cancer types and CCI scores, and these analyses produced the same results. Conclusion: Our study, using nationwide retrospective cohort data, did not find evidence suggesting that ranitidine and nizatidine increase the risk of GI cancer. In fact, we observed that the incidence of GI cancer was lower in individuals who used the drugs compared to nonusers. These findings suggest a potential beneficial effect of these drugs on cancer risk, likely attributed to their ability to improve digestive function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new miniaturized liquid extraction cartridge equipped with a functional porous polytetrafluoroethylene membrane was developed for the determination of formaldehyde in gaseous samples. The functional polytetrafluoroethylene membrane allows gas to pass through while repelling both water‐based and organic‐based liquids. A derivatization reagent for formaldehyde, 2,4‐dinitrophenylhydrazine, was placed in the cartridge and gaseous samples are collected through the cartridge at 20 ml/min for 30 min. Formaldehyde in the gaseous sample is captured as the corresponding 2,4‐dinitrophenylhydrazine hydrazone, and an aliquot of the sample collection solution can be directly subjected to high‐performance liquid chromatographic analysis. The limit of quantification for the developed method was 5 ng/L formaldehyde in gas with a sampling volume of 600 ml. Proof‐of‐concept for formaldehyde determination in an aqueous sample was demonstrated using the developed cartridge in a purge‐and‐trap extraction setup. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The micro-morphology and exposed crystal facets of BiVO4 are the crucial factors influencing the gas sensing performance. In this paper, rectangular-plate-shaped BiVO4 with {040} exposed facets were prepared by controlling the concentration of Bi3+ during a facile hydrothermal route. A formation mechanism of the oriented growth nanoplates was proposed according to the morphological evolution of BiVO4 with different molar ratios of Bi to V. The gas-sensing results showed that the sample BVO-1.03 with {040} growing facets obtained at a molar ratio of Bi to V of 1.03:1 in solution presented the maximum sensitivity of 351.1 to 100 ppm ethylene glycol at 220 °C and a wide detection range even to ppb-level towards ethylene glycol was further confirmed. In addition, BVO-1.03 also showed excellent gas-sensing performance (151.1) to 100 ppm n-butanol at 220 °C, which was more than eight times that of the BVO-1. The exposing {040} active facets and the associated oxygen vacancies were demonstrated to be useful for the enhanced response and high recovery rate. Based on the fast recovery rate for ethylene glycol (17.55 s−1) and the high response value at lower working temperature, the BiVO4 nanoplates with {040} exposed facets prepared in this work have potential significance for the environmental monitoring applications. Objectives: To better understand the unique inhibitory behavior of a non-natural cofactor preferred formaldehyde dehydrogenase (FalDH) mutant 9B2. Results: We described our serendipitous observation that 9B2 was reversibly inhibited by residual imidazole introduced during protein preparation, while the wild-type enzyme was not sensitive to imidazole. Kinetic analysis showed that imidazole was a competitive inhibitor of formaldehyde with a Ki of 16 μM and an uncompetitive inhibitor of Nicotinamide Cytosine Dinucleotide for 9B2, indicating that formaldehyde and imidazole were combined in the same position. Molecular docking results of 9B2 showed that imidazole could favorably bind very close to the nicotinamide moiety of the cofactor, where formaldehyde was expected to reside for catalysis, which was in line with a competitive inhibition. Conclusion: The mutant 9B2 can be competitively inhibited by imidazole, suggesting that cautions should be taken to evaluate activities as protein mutants might attain unexpected sensitivity to a component in buffers for purification or activity assays. The fluorescence-based portable device for the determination of lead (Pb2+) and formalin (FA) in food samples by using Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) as a fluorescence probe was developed. The proposed approach, Pb2+, and FA were determined based on the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism and the silver mirror reaction. The fluorescence intensity of the N-CDs decreased with the increase of Pb2+ concentration and increased with the increasing FA concentration. The fluorescence intensity of N-CDs after the reactions were measured by a filter-free fluorometer platform using a commercial camera module and a Raspberry Pi, a compact computer, as a detector and processor. The experimental results were obtained using control samples with known Pb2+ and FA concentrations in the 0.01-10 mg L− 1 and 25–150 mg L− 1, respectively. The proposed approach is simple, low-cost, and accurate for the on-site monitoring of Pb2+ and FA in various food samples. Aims: The aim of this study is to investigate the rates of hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) in patients receiving paclitaxel chemotherapy, with and without a histamine‐2 (H2) antagonists. Method: This prospective, multi‐centre, cohort study compared patients receiving paclitaxel treated with premedication regimens containing chlorphenamine, dexamethasone and an H2 antagonist vs patients treated without an H2 antagonist. Rates of HSRs were described and logistic multivariable regression was used to investigate any associations with H2 antagonist treatment, adjusting for confounding variables. Results: A total of 1043 individuals were included in the study; of these, 638 (61%) patients received an H2 antagonist and 405 (49%) were not given an H2 antagonist. Incidence of HSR in the cohort treated with H2 antagonists was 11.31% (n = 70) vs 9.86% (n = 41) in the cohort without. There was no statistically significant difference between the rates of HSR observed in those receiving and not receiving an H2 antagonist (odds ratio 1.04, 95% CI 0.65, 1.66, P =.9). Conclusions: Results presented within the study are consistent with other recently published evidence to suggest that H2 antagonists do not confer any advantage as part of premedication regimens in reducing the incidence of HSR in patients treated with paclitaxel. Epigenetic diseases can be produced by a stable alteration, called an epimutation, in DNA methylation, in which epigenome alterations are directly involved in the underlying molecular mechanisms of the disease. This review focuses on the epigenetics of two inherited metabolic diseases, epi-cblC, an inherited metabolic disorder of cobalamin (vitamin B12) metabolism, and alpha-thalassemia type α-ZF, an inherited disorder of α2-globin synthesis, with a particular interest in the role of aberrant antisense transcription of flanking genes in the generation of epimutations in CpG islands of gene promoters. In both disorders, the epimutation is triggered by an aberrant antisense transcription through the promoter, which produces an H3K36me3 histone mark involved in the recruitment of DNA methyltransferases. It results from diverse genetic alterations. In alpha-thalassemia type α-ZF, a deletion removes HBA1 and HBQ1 genes and juxtaposes the antisense LUC7L gene to the HBA2 gene. In epi-cblC, the epimutation in the MMACHC promoter is produced by mutations in the antisense flanking gene PRDX1, which induces a prolonged antisense transcription through the MMACHC promoter. The presence of the epimutation in sperm, its transgenerational inheritance via the mutated PRDX1, and the high expression of PRDX1 in spermatogonia but its nearly undetectable transcription in spermatids and spermatocytes, suggest that the epimutation could be maintained during germline reprogramming and despite removal of aberrant transcription. The epivariation seen in the MMACHC promoter (0.95 × 10–3) is highly frequent compared to epivariations affecting other genes of the Online Catalog of Human Genes and Genetic Disorders in an epigenome-wide dataset of 23,116 individuals. This and the comparison of epigrams of two monozygotic twins suggest that the aberrant transcription could also be influenced by post-zygotic environmental exposures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building-related symptoms (BRS) is a significant work-related and public health problem, characterized by non-specific symptoms occurring in a particular building. The cause of BRS is unknown, but certain reactive compounds are suggested risk factors. The aim of this controlled exposure study was to investigate whether BRS cases report more odor annoyance and symptoms and show altered autonomous nervous system (ANS) response during exposure to the reactive aldehyde, acrolein in comparison with referents. Individuals with BRS (n = 18) and referents (n = 14) took part in two exposure sessions (80 min). One session contained heptane alone, and the other heptane and acrolein. Perceived odor annoyance; eye, nose, and throat symptoms; and ANS response were measured continuously. BRS cases did not experience more odor annoyance; eye, nose, and throat symptoms; or altered ANS response in comparison with referents during the exposures. Supplementary analyses revealed that BRS cases that also reported chemical intolerance perceived more symptoms than referents during acrolein exposure. Acrolein exposure at a concentration below previously reported sensory irritation detection thresholds is perceived as more irritating by a subgroup of BRS individuals compared with referents. The results of this study indicate that a subset of individuals with building related symptoms (BRS) has a lowered sensory irritation threshold towards acrolein exposure.
