The neural underpinnings of mental calculation, the fundamentals of arithmetic representations and processes, and the development of arithmetic abilities have been explored by researchers over the years. In the present work, we report a study that analyzes the brain-activated areas of a group of 35 healthy subjects (9 males, 26 females, mean age ± SD = 18.23 ± 2.20 years) who performed a serial subtraction arithmetic task. In contrast to most of the studies in the literature based on fMRI, we performed the brain active source reconstruction starting from EEG signals by means of the eLORETA method. In particular, the subjects were classified as bad counters or good counters, according to the results of the task, and the brain activity of the two groups was compared. The results were statistically significant only in the beta band, revealing that the left limbic lobe was found to be more active in people showing better performance. The limbic lobe is involved in visuospatial processing, memory, arithmetic fact retrieval, and emotions. However, the role of the limbic lobe in mental arithmetic has been barely explored, so these interesting findings could represent a starting point for future in-depth analyses. Since there is evidence in the literature that the motor system is affected by the execution of arithmetic tasks, a more extensive knowledge of the brain activation associated with arithmetic tasks could be exploited not only for the assessment of mathematical skills but also in the evaluation of motor impairments and, consequently, in rehabilitation for motor disorders. Background Central serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) neurotransmission has been implicated in the etiology of depression. Most antidepressants ameliorate depressive symptoms by increasing 5-HT at synaptic clefts, but their effect on 5-HT receptors has yet to be clarified. 11C-WAY-100635 and 18F-MPPF are positron emission tomography (PET) radioligands for 5-HT1A receptors. While binding of both ligands reflects 5-HT1A receptor density, 18F-MPPF biding may also be affected by extracellular 5-HT concentrations. This dual-tracer PET study explored the neurochemical substrates underlying antidepressant effects in patients with depression. Methods Eleven patients with depression, including 9 treated with antidepressants, and 16 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals underwent PET scans with 11C-WAY-100635 and 18F-MPPF. Radioligand binding was determined by calculating the nondisplaceable binding potential (BP ND). Results Patients treated with antidepressants showed significantly lower 18F-MPPF BP ND in neocortical regions and raphe nuclei, but not in limbic regions, than controls. No significant group differences in 11C-WAY-100635 BP ND were found in any of the regions. Significant correlations of BP ND between 11C-WAY-100635 and 18F-MPPF were observed in limbic regions and raphe nuclei of healthy controls, but no such associations were found in antidepressant-treated patients. Moreover, 18F-MPPF BP ND in limbic regions was significantly correlated with the severity of depressive symptoms. Conclusions These results suggest a diversity of antidepressant-induced extracellular 5-HT elevations in the limbic system among depressive patients, which is associated with the individual variability of clinical symptoms following the treatment. Introduction: This study aimed to assess the visibility of the indusium griseum (IG) in magnetic resonance (MR) scans of the human fetal brain and to evaluate its reliability as an imaging biomarker of the normality of brain midline development., Material and Methods: The retrospective observational study encompassed T2-w 3T MR images from 90 post-mortem fetal brains and immunohistochemical sections from 41 fetal brains (16-40 gestational weeks) without cerebral pathology. Three raters independently inspected and evaluated the visibility of IG in post-mortem and in vivo MR scans. Weighted kappa statistics and regression analysis were used to determine inter- and intra-rater agreement and the type and strength of the association of IG visibility with gestational age., Results: The visibility of the IG was the highest between the 25 and 30 gestational week period, with a very good inter-rater variability (kappa 0.623-0.709) and excellent intra-rater variability (kappa 0.81-0.93). The immunochemical analysis of the histoarchitecture of IG discloses the expression of highly hydrated extracellular molecules in IG as the substrate of higher signal intensity and best visibility of IG during the mid-fetal period., Conclusions: The knowledge of developmental brain histology and fetal age allows us to predict the IG-visibility in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and use it as a biomarker to evaluate the morphogenesis of the brain midline. As a biomarker, IG is significant for post-mortem pathological examination by MRI. Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiological findings of metastatic tumors and primary brain tumors affecting the fornix. Methods  Between January 2015 and March 2023, we retrospectively evaluated 1087 patients of both sexes who underwent cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for a preliminary diagnosis of intracranial malignancy in the radiology department of our hospital. Two radiologists with six and 10 years of experience in MRI examination assessed the relationship between primary and metastatic tumors and the fornix. Results  Involvement of the fornix was diagnosed in 29 of the 1087 patients (2.66%), of which fornix was affected by metastatic lesions in 14 patients (48.2%) and primary tumors in 15 patients (51.7%). The majority of metastatic lesions were from lung and breast cancers, with other tumor types including osteosarcoma, renal cell carcinoma, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, pleomorphic sarcoma, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Among all primary tumors, glioblastoma was the most common primary brain tumor invading the fornix, with other diagnoses including diffuse astrocytoma, medulloblastoma, and anaplastic oligodendroglioma. Metastatic and primary brain tumors affecting the fornix were detected over a broad timeline, from the time of diagnosis up to 120 months after diagnosis. A retrospective evaluation of medical records revealed memory deficits in four patients. Conclusion The fornix can be affected by both metastatic and primary brain tumors. The morphological perspective of the camel brain remains largely unexplored. Therefore, studying the topography of the camel brain is of crucial importance. This study aimed to provide a detailed color-coded topographic representation of the camel brain's gross anatomy and nomenclature, showing its various gyri and sulci and their borders. We compared them to previously known information to develop a detailed description of camel brain exterior architecture. Our research identified distinctive gyri and sulci with discrete positions and surrounding structures, allowing us to define sulci boundaries and establish logical gyri nomenclature. This study uncovered previously overlooked gyri and sulci and improved descriptions of specific sulci. The ectomarginal sulcus, splenial sulcus, splenial gyrus, and ectogenual gyrus are a few examples. These findings highlight several unique anatomical features of the dromedary brain, which can guide future research. By providing a comprehensive examination of the distinctive exterior anatomical features of the camel brain, this study may serve as a point of convergence for all researchers, providing more accurate identification of the gyri and sulci., (© 2024. Assessing brain connectivity during rest has become a widely used approach to identify changes in functional brain organization during development. Generally, previous works have demonstrated that brain activity shifts from more local to more distributed processing from childhood into adolescence. However, the majority of those works have been based on functional magnetic resonance imaging measures, whereas multispectral functional connectivity, as measured using magnetoencephalography (MEG), has been far less characterized. In our study, we examined spontaneous cortical activity during eyes-closed rest using MEG in 101 typically developing youth (9-15 years old; 51 females, 50 males). Multispectral MEG images were computed, and connectivity was estimated in the canonical delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma bands using the imaginary part of the phase coherence, which was computed between 200 brain regions defined by the Schaefer cortical atlas. Delta and alpha connectivity matrices formed more communities as a function of increasing age. Connectivity weights predominantly decreased with age in both frequency bands; delta-band differences largely implicated limbic cortical regions and alpha band differences in attention and cognitive networks. These results are consistent with previous work, indicating the functional organization of the brain becomes more segregated across development, and highlight spectral specificity across different canonical networks., (© The Author(s) 2023. Vertigo, a symptom of illusory movement, is caused by asymmetry of the vestibular system. The vestibular system consists of the vestibular labyrinth, cranial nerve VIII, brainstem vestibular nuclei, cerebellum, ocular motor nuclei, spinal cord, and less well-defined cerebral projections. In this day and age of artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced imaging, and cutting-edge research in the field of neurology, the exact cortical control of vestibular function is still uncharted. A 45-year-old woman with a past medical history of labyrinthitis about 4.5 years ago (resolved) presented to hospital due to severe dizziness, emesis, and mild vertical diplopia for the past few days. Her symptom of dizziness i.e. room spinning was continuous without any postural component. MRI of the brain revealed a small stroke in the left hippocampal area, more specifically alveus of hippocampus. The patient was started on dual antiplatelet therapy and atorvastatin for secondary stroke prevention. Follow-up visit as an outpatient at one-month post hospital discharge was unremarkable without any recurrence of vertigo symptoms. We believe this may indicate that the limbic lobe has a much larger role in vestibular functioning than previously thought, and may control more vestibular operations than any other central nervous system area., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright © 2023, Gulraiz et al.)

Von Economo neurons (VENs) have been mentioned in the medical literature since the second half of the 19th century; however, it was not until the second decade of the 20th century that their cytomorphology was described in detail. To date, VENs have been found in limbic sectors of the frontal, temporal and insular lobes. In humans, their density seems to decrease in the caudo-rostral and ventro-dorsal direction; that is, from the anterior regions of the cingulate and insular cortices towards the frontal pole and the superior frontal gyrus. Several studies have provided similar descriptions of the shape of the VEN soma, but the size of the soma varies from one cortical region to another. There is consensus among different authors about the selective vulnerability of VENs in certain pathologies, in which a deterioration of the capacities involved in social behaviour is observed. In this review, we propose that the restriction of VENs towards the sectors linked to limbic information processing in Homo sapiens gives them a possible functional role in relation to the structures in which they are located. However, given the divergence in characteristics such as location, density, size and biochemical profile among VENs of different cortical sectors, the activities in which they participate could allow them to partake in a wide spectrum of neurological functions, including autonomic responses and executive functions., (© 2022 Anatomical Society.)
