1. Measurement of muon flux behind the beam dump of J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility

Abstract

A muon-flux measurement behind the beam dump of the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility was performed with a compact muon detector that can be inserted into a vertical observing hole which was dug underground with 81 mm in diameter. The flux of the muons penetrating the beam dump was scanned vertically at intervals of 0.5 m, showing a wide distribution with a maximum at the beam level. The muon flux was consistent with the expectation from a Monte-Carlo simulation at more than 1 m away from the beam axis, which is expected to be used for signal-loss evaluation in the future KOTO II experiment for measuring rare kaon decays. Abstract

We present the first search for the pair production of dark particles $X$ via $K_L^0\to XX$ with $X$ decaying into two photons using the data collected by the KOTO experiment. No signal was observed in the mass range of 40 - 110 MeV/c$^2$ and 210 - 240 MeV/c$^2$. This sets upper limits on the branching fractions as $\mathcal{B}(K_L^0 \to XX)$ $<$ (1-4) $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ and $\mathcal{B}(K_L^0 \to XX)$ $<$ (1-2) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ at the 90% confidence level for the two mass regions, respectively.

Abstract

We study the W/Cu multilayers as a spin current source and the coherent spin–orbit torques in a Fe layer using the spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (STFMR) technique. With increasing numbers of layers, the line shape of the STFMR signals changes from predominantly antisymmetric to predominantly symmetric. When using [W(0.5)/Cu(0.5)]5 as a spin current source, the symmetric amplitude increases by a factor of 5 compared to a single W layer. Simultaneously, the effective damping parameter also increases slightly due to enhanced spin pumping. Along with an increasing trend in the damping-like torque efficiency, this suggests that the extrinsic spin Hall effect is enhanced. Concurrently, the antisymmetric amplitude decreases significantly by a factor of 27, which indicates an increase in the field-like torque when multilayers are used as a spin current source. Abstract

Importance Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of therapeutic-dose heparin in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 produced conflicting results, possibly due to heterogeneity of treatment effect (HTE) across individuals. Better understanding of HTE could facilitate individualized clinical decision-making. Objective To evaluate HTE of therapeutic-dose heparin for patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and to compare approaches to assessing HTE. Design, Setting, and Participants Exploratory analysis of a multiplatform adaptive RCT of therapeutic-dose heparin vs usual care pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis in 3320 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 enrolled in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia between April 2020 and January 2021. Heterogeneity of treatment effect was assessed 3 ways: using (1) conventional subgroup analyses of baseline characteristics, (2) a multivariable outcome prediction model (risk-based approach), and (3) a multivariable causal forest model (effect-based approach). Analyses primarily used bayesian statistics, consistent with the original trial. Exposures Participants were randomized to therapeutic-dose heparin or usual care pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis. Main Outcomes and Measures Organ support–free days, assigning a value of −1 to those who died in the hospital and the number of days free of cardiovascular or respiratory organ support up to day 21 for those who survived to hospital discharge; and hospital survival. Results Baseline demographic characteristics were similar between patients randomized to therapeutic-dose heparin or usual care (median age, 60 years; 38% female; 32% known non-White race; 45% Hispanic). In the overall multiplatform RCT population, therapeutic-dose heparin was not associated with an increase in organ support–free days (median value for the posterior distribution of the OR, 1.05; 95% credible interval, 0.91-1.22). In conventional subgroup analyses, the effect of therapeutic-dose heparin on organ support–free days differed between patients requiring organ support at baseline or not (median OR, 0.85 vs 1.30; posterior probability of difference in OR, 99.8%), between females and males (median OR, 0.87 vs 1.16; posterior probability of difference in OR, 96.4%), and between patients with lower body mass index (BMI 90% for all comparisons). In risk-based analysis, patients at lowest risk of poor outcome had the highest propensity for benefit from heparin (lowest risk decile: posterior probability of OR >1, 92%) while those at highest risk were most likely to be harmed (highest risk decile: posterior probability of OR

We present the first search for the pair production of dark particles $X$ via $K_L^0\to XX$ with $X$ decaying into two photons using the data collected by the KOTO experiment. No signal was observed in the mass range of 40 - 110 MeV/c$^2$ and 210 - 240 MeV/c$^2$. This sets upper limits on the branching fractions as $\mathcal{B}(K_L^0 \to XX)$ $

Abstract

MXenes are two-dimensional materials that are attractive for applications as sensors because they possess high conductivity, super hydrophilicity and high surface area. There already exist substantial researches on the use of Ti3C2Tx based MXenes as electrochemical biosensors, but in contrast Ti2CTX based MXenes are rarely discussed due to their inherent resistance instability. However, the use of Ti2CTX based MXenes is still worth exploring as theoretical studies have shown that Ti2CTX possesses a significantly lower bandgap compared to many other MXenes structures. Herein, this study examines the use of Ti2CTX MXene structures in a P-channel ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (P-ISFET) for the detection of Chlorpyrifos (Cpy). Compositing the PEDOT:PSS thin film with delaminated Ti2CTX MXenes flakes with graphene oxide (GO) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) allows it to maintain its sheet resistance at around 100 kOhm for 3 days. Interestingly when using the composite thin film, the minimum threshold voltage required to observe Cpy electroreduction is −0.1 V. This is much lower than that when using titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is −1.5 V. Composite thin films containing Ti2CTX MXene are found to detect Cpy with higher sensitivity compared to thin films without MXene. This is because the presence of Mxene in the PEDOT:PSS composite thin films improves the surface area available for Cpy detection. This study highlights the potential of Ti2CTx MXene-BSA composite as a promising 2D material for enzyme-free CPY detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: Home nursing and medical services have an established role in delivering chronic medical care to populations which face difficulty accessing physical clinics. Those with chronic medical conditions and reduced mobility face a higher likelihood of suffering from psychiatric co-morbidity. However, till date there has been limited research done on home-based psychiatric care in this population. Since 2021, the Psychiatry department of Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) has been collaborating with TTSH Community Health Team (CHT) to manage potential psychiatric issues in community patients. These patients would be discussed in a weekly multidisciplinary setting. If indicated, home visit by both teams for home-based assessment and treatment would be arranged, allowing for detection and treatment of psychiatric illness. Objectives: To demonstrate that the collaboration between the psychiatry team and CHT leads to diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illness in a population that might otherwise have been unable to access psychiatric services. Methods: We performed a retrospective study on all referrals from the CHT to the psychiatry team, within the 2-year period of August 2021 to August 2023. We collected demographic information, psychiatric history prior to referral, reason for referral, outcome of multidisciplinary discussion, and outcome of the home visits (including diagnoses made, and medications initiated). Results: A total of 92 patients were referred by the CHT to the psychiatry team. Most were elderly with multiple medical co-morbidities; of note, a history of stroke was present in 24 of the referred patients. Common reasons for referral include suspected mental illness, risk assessment, and management of behavioural issues. 28 of the referred patients did not have a prior psychiatric history at the point of referral. Among these, home visits involving the psychiatric team were done for 16 patients. 11 (68%) of these home visits led to diagnosis of a new psychiatric illness. 9 of these patients were initiated on psychotropic medications in the home setting. Conclusions: A significant proportion of patients (68% of home visits without prior psychiatric diagnosis) were newly diagnosed with psychiatric illness, allowing early psychiatric intervention to be delivered. This was achieved in a population with a high prevalence of multiple medical comorbidity and barriers to clinic-based psychiatric evaluation and treatment. We propose future comparative studies into how the collaboration between the psychiatric team and community health team can improve the quality of life and caregiver experience of patients with chronic medical problems, as well as how the service had improved the confidence of the community health team in identifying and managing patients with possible psychiatric issues. Abstract

Prosthetic socket plays the most important role in lower limb prosthesis. The conventional fabrication process of prosthetic socket is labor intensive and time-consuming. The application of additive manufacturing technology may greatly simplify the process. One of the main concerns on the reliability of 3D printed prosthetic socket is its structural strength due to the various 3D printing parameters that may influence the strength of 3D printed products. Furthermore, most of the previous studies focused on single parameter and the effect on socket strength. Thus, this study aimed to examine the optimization of fused deposition modeling printing parameter of 3D printed prosthetic socket in term of strength, fabrication time and weight. Three FDM printing parameters were studied which included layer height, nozzle diameter and infill percentage. The data was analyzed using Taguchi and PCR-TOPSIS methods. Based on the result, it was concluded that the most effective combination of printing parameter is 1.0 mm nozzle diameter, 0.48 mm layer height and 30% infill percentage. In addition, infill percentage shown the highest influence towards the responsive values followed by layer height and nozzle diameter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Despite the increasing demand for efficient and sustainable chemical processes, the development of scalable systems using biocatalysis for fine chemical production remains a significant challenge. We have developed a scalable flow system using immobilized enzymes to facilitate flavin-dependent biocatalysis, targeting as a proof-of-concept asymmetric alkene reduction. The system integrates a flavin-dependent Old Yellow Enzyme (OYE) and a soluble hydrogenase to enable H 2 -driven regeneration of the OYE cofactor FMNH 2 . Molecular hydrogen was produced by water electrolysis using a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer and introduced into the flow system via a designed gas membrane addition module at a high diffusion rate. The flow system shows remarkable stability and reusability, consistently achieving >99% conversion of ketoisophorone to levodione. It also demonstrates versatility and selectivity in reducing various cyclic enones and can be extended to further flavin-based biocatalytic approaches and gas-dependent reactions.
