In this editorial, we introduce the special issue entitled, ‘Language and psychosocial oppression: Methodological approaches, challenges, and opportunities’. This special issue includes seven articles that were produced in relation to the growing attention being given to the psychological phenomena associated with (in)justice and (in)equity, with a particular focus on how justice-oriented agendas and interventions might be advanced. Specifically, the included articles point to ways in which more micro-oriented approaches to studying languaging practices might serve to analytically and theoretically foreground justice-oriented research aims. There is consensus around the value of conducting literature reviews across disciplines; however, little attention has been given to the potential(s) of engaging in a qualitative methodological literature review (QMLR). This article examines the possibilities of engaging in a QMLR by showing how it can inform qualitative research practice. After overviewing the history of literature reviews, we offer a series of questions that can inform and be integrated into a QMLR. We then demonstrate how such reviews can serve as an opportunity for qualitative inquirers to critically engage with the methodological literature with the intent of better understanding, enacting, and generating new methodological practices. In the last few decades, there has been a proliferation of qualitative methodologies and methods. Within HRD, however, there has been a persistent use of particular kinds of qualitative methodologies and methods, with limited degrees of methodological innovation. In this article, we overview the literature on qualitative methodological innovation and the kinds of innovation that have been engaged within HRD. To move the field forward, we introduce a new design framework, which we suggest is a useful decision-making tool to guide a scholar in making research design choices as they consider innovative research designs. To date, the study of how health and wellbeing are actualized in organizations and how an organization's interactional practices shape an environment that is potentially harmful to health is understudied. Much of the research around this topic has centered on personality and individual differences, as well as health and safety or ergonomics. Little understanding exists of how interactional practices might serve to prioritize health and wellbeing. In this paper, we introduce discursive psychology (DP) – a qualitative approach to studying talk and text that focuses on examining what is accomplished through people's interactional practices. We provide an overview of DP and discuss its underlying assumptions, analytic process, and quality measures. To illustrate the application of DP to HRD, we include data extracts that highlight the impact of question design. To conclude, we point to how DP might afford HRD scholars opportunities to generate new theoretical understandings about organizational practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Child mental health assessments are complex and involve the analysis of data from multiple sources to inform treatment decisions. Question sequences are central to mental health assessments; however, little research has examined the functions of questions in child mental health interactions, particularly questions that aim to elicit information from children that might be used to inform diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we utilize a large corpus of video-recorded child mental health assessments to examine the use and function of a particular kind of wh-question—circular questions—that is, questions that seek clients' views on other family members' feelings, actions, and thoughts. Using conversation analysis, we identified three "broad" functions of circular questions in child mental health assessment. Our findings provide clinicians with clinically relevant examples for using circular questions to more fully involve children in the assessment process and acquire valuable information for diagnosis. Certainly, many HRD scholars have used qualitative methodologies and methods to advance understanding and develop theory, and yet broadly within HRD qualitative perspectives still remain underused. We point to how a micro-analysis of this kind can afford HRD scholars opportunities to not only describe the nature and effects of an organization's interactional practices, but also work toward offering guidance of ways to potentially change practice. The articles included in the special issue - when taken together - serve to expand the types of qualitative methodologies and methods used by HRD scholars, as well as present innovative ways to use qualitative approaches and techniques to build theory. In the second article, entitled "Phenomenology and Human Resource Development: Philosophical Foundations and Implications for Research", Kuchinke turns back to the philosophical foundation of phenomenology - an increasingly popular qualitative methodological perspective in HRD and other fields. Given the centrality of the visual to modern day life, this article introduces a visually informed approach to critical discursive psychology that facilitates the study of visual materials. We argue that the visual is a site where the social world is actively built and maintained, similar to what has been reasoned more generally about language use, and that critical discursive psychology can offer a rigorous approach to examining visual materials that can productively deepen our understanding of psychological concepts. As such, we integrate a consideration of visuality into critical discursive psychology theory, including a conceptualization of visual discourse and visual interpretative repertoires, provide tools for close readings of visual materials and guidance regarding how to employ these tools, and outline the process of identifying visual interpretative repertoires. HIV service providers are the primary implementers of HIV care services, but rural HIV service providers are under researched. We used an interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore rural HIV service providers' lived experiences of working in HIV care, who work in a rural region of a Midwestern state in the United States. From July to August 2019, 15 HIV service providers participated in a one-hour semi-structured telephone interview that elicited their experiences working in the rural HIV care continuum. Participants were tired of constantly educating and working to reduce HIV stigma; however, they received support from family and friends once they educated them about HIV. Participants felt they lacked control over systems and they developed emotional-based coping to address constant occupational stressors. Findings highlight the importance of resiliency and advocacy research and practice across ecological levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We addressed the lack of empirical work leveraging visual materials within the masculinities literature using Instagram photos to understand contemporary masculinity performance. By engaging in a detailed analysis of a social media context, we aimed to reveal some of the current mechanisms by which people are making meaning of the social world in the present-day, bringing to light new ways of identifying how people "do" gender. We used a visually informed, critical discursive psychology approach to explore how masculine identities were visually constructed on Instagram. The 10 most liked posts from 2018 at the time of data collection were selected from two celebrities' Instagram accounts. These images were coded and subsequently analyzed to identify possible visual interpretative repertoires. Three visual interpretative repertoires were located. These repertoires, sexy glaring, leisurely gentlemen, and nothing to hide, were repeatedly used in photos prominently displayed on the users' Instagram feeds to craft masculine identities that were physically and "biologically" supported by their appearances. These identities were associated with constructions of toughness, agency, masculine interests and privileged, leisurely lifestyles. An analysis of a deviant case provided support for the existence of visual hybrid masculinities among young, White individuals that largely functioned to reproduce power and privilege. Our study filled a gap in the psychology of men and masculinities by investigating constructions of gender in the visual realm. We additionally put forth that critical discursive psychology offers generative possibilities for analyzing the increasingly visual-centric world, wherein identities are being performed. A central challenge to addressing what becomes taken-for-granted in method in educational research is socialization into the field. During graduate training, students and their mentors are challenged by unique projects. Here, authors, two early career scholars and a faculty mentor, offer a critical interrogation of socialization experiences related to methods of anonymizing and masking, questions of responsibilities to varying publics, and the good that research might, or might not, do in the world by sharing a co-constructed narrative based on interactive interviews which took place over six months. The authors identify saddle points, or points of stillness, within these conversations that offer, but do not dictate, considerations for teaching practices of anonymizing and masking as part of qualitative research training and socialization.
