Abstract: We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu = (g_\mu -2)/2$. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses $3.1$ GeV$/c$ polarized muons stored in a $7.1$-m-radius storage ring with a $1.45$ T uniform magnetic field. The value of $ a_{\mu}$ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, beam dispersion, and transient magnetic fields. We measure $a_\mu = 116 592 057 (25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity and represents a factor of $2.2$ improvement over our previous result based on the 2018 dataset. In combination, the two datasets yield $a_\mu(\text{FNAL}) = 116 592 055 (24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). Abstract: We present a new measurement of the positive muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu \equiv (g_\mu - 2)/2$, from the Fermilab Muon $g\!-\!2$ Experiment using data collected in 2019 and 2020. We have analyzed more than 4 times the number of positrons from muon decay than in our previous result from 2018 data. The systematic error is reduced by more than a factor of 2 due to better running conditions, a more stable beam, and improved knowledge of the magnetic field weighted by the muon distribution, $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, and of the anomalous precession frequency corrected for beam dynamics effects, $\omega_a$. From the ratio $\omega_a / \tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, together with precisely determined external parameters, we determine $a_\mu = 116\,592\,057(25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). Combining this result with our previous result from the 2018 data, we obtain $a_\mu\text{(FNAL)} = 116\,592\,055(24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). The new experimental world average is $a_\mu (\text{Exp}) = 116\,592\,059(22)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.19 ppm), which represents a factor of 2 improvement in precision., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The muon has played a central role in establishing the Standard Model of particle physics, and continues to provide valuable information about the nature of new physics. A new complex at Fermilab, the Advanced Muon Facility, would provide the world's most intense positive and negative muon beams by exploiting the full potential of PIP-II and the Booster upgrade. This facility would enable a broad muon physics program, including studies of charged lepton flavor violation, muonium-antimuonium transitions, a storage ring muon EDM experiment, and muon spin rotation experiments. Abstract: An observation of Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) would be unambiguous evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. The Mu2e and COMET experiments, under construction, are designed to push the sensitivity to CLFV in the mu to e conversion process to unprecedented levels. Whether conversion is observed or not, there is a strong case to be made for further improving sensitivity, or for examining the process on additional target materials. Mu2e-II is a proposed upgrade to Mu2e, with at least an additional order of magnitude in sensitivity to the conversion rate over Mu2e. The approach and challenges for this proposal are summarized. Abstract: The Muon $g-2$ Experiment at Fermilab uses a gaseous straw tracking detector to make detailed measurements of the stored muon beam profile, which are essential for the experiment to achieve its uncertainty goals. Positrons from muon decays spiral inward and pass through the tracking detector before striking an electromagnetic calorimeter. The tracking detector is therefore located inside the vacuum chamber in a region where the magnetic field is large and non-uniform. As such, the tracking detector must have a low leak rate to maintain a high-quality vacuum, must be non-magnetic so as not to perturb the magnetic field and, to minimize energy loss, must have a low radiation length. The performance of the tracking detector has met or surpassed the design requirements, with adequate electronic noise levels, an average straw hit resolution of $(110 \pm 20) \,\mu$m, a detection efficiency of 97% or higher, and no performance degradation or signs of aging. The tracking detector's measurements result in an otherwise unachievable understanding of the muon's beam motion, particularly at early times in the experiment's measurement period when there are a significantly greater number of muons decaying. This is vital to the statistical power of the experiment, as well as facilitating the precise extraction of several systematic corrections and uncertainties. Abstract: CDF Collaboration: et al., The mass of the W boson, a mediator of the weak force between elementary particles, is tightly constrained by the symmetries of the standard model of particle physics. The Higgs boson was the last missing component of the model. After observation of the Higgs boson, a measurement of the W boson mass provides a stringent test of the model. We measure the W boson mass, MW, using data corresponding to 8.8 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a 1.96 tera–electron volt center-of-mass energy with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A sample of approximately 4 million W boson candidates is used to obtain MW=80,433.5±6.4stat±6.9syst=80,433.5±9.4 MeV/c2, the precision of which exceeds that of all previous measurements combined (stat, statistical uncertainty; syst, systematic uncertainty; MeV, mega–electron volts; c, speed of light in a vacuum). 7. The relationship between inspection time and IQ in specific reading disabled grade 7 students

Abstract: This study investigated the relationship between inspection time and IQ in a total sample of 155 specific reading disabled (SRD) and normal children aged 12 and 13 of average and above-average intelligence and in IQ matched subsamples of 24 each. The Standard Progressive Matrices and a computerised inspection time (IT) task using the adaptive staircase procedure with an accuracy level of 79.4% were adopted. It was hypothesised that, due to the low level perceptual deficits involved in specific reading disability, there would be a significant difference between the mean ITs of SRDs and normals, which in turn would lead to less correlation between IT and IQ in SRDs, thereby implicating these low level visual deficits in the association between IT and IQ. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the mean ITs of both groups, nor was there a differential IT-IQ correlation in the predicted direction. On the contrary, a marginally significant higher IT-IQ correlation was found in SRDs. This presents a theoretical paradox, for whereas the former results indicate that low level perceptual deficits are not involved in inspection time, the latter finding suggests that they are. Further research is needed to resolve this anomaly.

Abstract: The mass of the W boson, a mediator of the weak force between elementary particles, is tightly constrained by the symmetries of the standard model of particle physics. The Higgs boson was the last missing component of the model. After observation of the Higgs boson, a measurement of the W boson mass provides a stringent test of the model. We measure the W boson mass, M W , using data corresponding to 8.8 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a 1.96 tera–electron volt center-of-mass energy with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A sample of approximately 4 million W boson candidates is used to obtain M W = 80 , 433.5 ± 6.4 stat ± 6.9 syst = 80 , 433.5 ± 9.4 MeV / c 2 , the precision of which exceeds that of all previous measurements combined (stat, statistical uncertainty; syst, systematic uncertainty; MeV, mega–electron volts; c , speed of light in a vacuum). This measurement is in significant tension with the standard model expectation.

Abstract: Background: Heavy charged particles after nuclear muon capture are an important nuclear physics background to the muon-to-electron conversion experiments Mu2e and COMET, which will search for charged lepton flavor violation at an unprecedented level of sensitivity. Purpose: The AlCap experiment aimed to measure the yield and energy spectra of protons, deuterons, tritons, and α particles emitted after the nuclear capture of muons stopped in Al, Si, and Ti in the low-energy range relevant for the muon-to-electron conversion experiments. Methods: Individual charged particle types were identified in layered silicon detector packages and their initial energy distributions were unfolded from the observed energy spectra. Results: The proton yields per muon capture were determined as Y p ( Al ) = 26.64 ( 28 stat. ) ( 77 syst. ) × 10 − 3 and Y p ( Ti ) = 26.48 ( 35 ) ( 80 ) × 10 − 3 in the energy range 3.5–20.0 MeV, and as Y p ( Si ) = 52.5 ( 6 ) ( 18 ) × 10 − 3 in the energy range 4.0–20.0 MeV. Detailed information on yields and energy spectra for all observed nuclei are presented in the paper. Conclusions: The yields in the candidate muon stopping targets, Al and Ti, are approximately half of that in Si, which was used in the past to estimate this background. The reduced background allows for less shielding and a better energy resolution in these experiments. It is anticipated that the comprehensive information presented in this paper will stimulate modern theoretical calculations of the rare process of muon capture with charged particle emission and inform the design of future muon-to-electron conversion experiments.

Abstract: These data were taken to characterize the performance and test the data acquisition system of two detectors to be used to monitor the stopping target for the forth-coming Mu2e experiment at Fermilab; the High Purity Germanium (HPGe) and Lanthanum Bromide (LaBr) Detectors, in the presence of the pulsed gamma beam at ELBE. This measurement is crucial for the normalisation of the Mu2e experiment. The corresponding beamtime was carried out at the gELBE bremsstrahlung beamline of HZDR's ELBE radiation facility from April 21 to April 25, 2022 (GATE ID: 21202619-ST). The data sets represent the data taken with the LaBr detector by means of an ORTEC DSPEC 50 and a Lecroy/Teledyne HDO4104 oscilloscope.

11. Evaluation of a nurse practitioner role within a specialist palliative care service in Australia

Abstract: In Australia, despite the growing need for palliative care, there is a shortage of palliative care professionals. The literature suggests that nurse practitioners (NPs) are well positioned to innovate the current model of palliative medicine. This prospective study evaluates the implementation of a new NP role within an established multidisciplinary palliative care service. In this study, patients under the care of the NP had fewer admissions to an acute hospital compared to the rest of the service (17.0% vs. 27.2%), as well as no acute admissions for terminal care and a greater number of patients who achieved their preferred place of death (87.2% vs. 72.2%). A survey of the multidisciplinary team revealed that the majority of responders (93.3%) felt that the NP role had a positive impact on patient care and was holistic, safe, and met patients’ needs. Neutral or negative survey responses highlighted the need for further education or refinement of the role in areas such as prescribing and ability to refer patients directly to medical specialists. Overall, study results were positive and support the introduction of the NP role into a specialist palliative care service but more research is required to assess the effectiveness of the role.

Abstract: Background: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a lethal arrhythmia syndrome, frequently caused by rare loss-of-function variants in the potassium channel encoded by KCNH2 . Variant classification is difficult, often owing to lack of functional data. Moreover, variant-based risk stratification is also complicated by heterogenous clinical data and incomplete penetrance. Here, we sought to test whether variant-specific information, primarily from high-throughput functional assays, could improve both classification and cardiac event risk stratification in a large, harmonized cohort of KCNH2 missense variant heterozygotes., Methods: We quantified cell-surface trafficking of 18,796 variants in KCNH2 using a Multiplexed Assay of Variant Effect (MAVE). We recorded KCNH2 current density for 533 variants by automated patch clamping (APC). We calibrated the strength of evidence of MAVE data according to ClinGen guidelines. We deeply phenotyped 1,458 patients with KCNH2 missense variants, including QTc, cardiac event history, and mortality. We correlated variant functional data and Bayesian LQTS penetrance estimates with cohort phenotypes and assessed hazard ratios for cardiac events., Results: Variant MAVE trafficking scores and APC peak tail currents were highly correlated (Spearman Rank-order ρ = 0.69). The MAVE data were found to provide up to pathogenic very strong evidence for severe loss-of-function variants. In the cohort, both functional assays and Bayesian LQTS penetrance estimates were significantly predictive of cardiac events when independently modeled with patient sex and adjusted QT interval (QTc); however, MAVE data became non-significant when peak-tail current and penetrance estimates were also available. The area under the ROC for 20-year event outcomes based on patient-specific sex and QTc (AUC 0.80 [0.76-0.83]) was improved with prospectively available penetrance scores conditioned on MAVE (AUC 0.86 [0.83-0.89]) or attainable APC peak tail current data (AUC 0.84 [0.81-0.88])., Conclusion: High throughput KCNH2 variant MAVE data meaningfully contribute to variant classification at scale while LQTS penetrance estimates and APC peak tail current measurements meaningfully contribute to risk stratification of cardiac events in patients with heterozygous KCNH2 missense variants.

16. Using Organoids to Model Sex Differences in the Human Brain.

Abstract: Sex differences are widespread during neurodevelopment and play a role in neuropsychiatric conditions such as autism, which is more prevalent in males than females. In humans, males have been shown to have larger brain volumes than females with development of the hippocampus and amygdala showing prominent sex differences. Mechanistically, sex steroids and sex chromosomes drive these differences in brain development, which seem to peak during prenatal and pubertal stages. Animal models have played a crucial role in understanding sex differences, but the study of human sex differences requires an experimental model that can recapitulate complex genetic traits. To fill this gap, human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived brain organoids are now being used to study how complex genetic traits influence prenatal brain development. For example, brain organoids from individuals with autism and individuals with X chromosome-linked Rett syndrome and fragile X syndrome have revealed prenatal differences in cell proliferation, a measure of brain volume differences, and excitatory-inhibitory imbalances. Brain organoids have also revealed increased neurogenesis of excitatory neurons due to androgens. However, despite growing interest in using brain organoids, several key challenges remain that affect its validity as a model system. In this review, we discuss how sex steroids and the sex chromosomes each contribute to sex differences in brain development. Then, we examine the role of X chromosome inactivation as a factor that drives sex differences. Finally, we discuss the combined challenges of modeling X chromosome inactivation and limitations of brain organoids that need to be taken into consideration when studying sex differences., (© 2024 Published by Elsevier Inc on behalf of Society of Biological Psychiatry.)

Abstract: The steady-state voltammetric responses of n-type Si(100) semiconductor ultramicroelectrodes (SUMEs) immersed in air- and water-free methanolic electrolytes have been measured. The response characteristics of these SUMEs in the absence of illumination were modeled and understood through a framework that describes the distribution of the applied potential across the semiconductor/electrolyte contact using four discrete regions: the semiconductor space charge, surface, Helmholtz, and diffuse layers. The latter region was described by the full Gouy-Chapman model. This framework afforded insight on how relevant parameters such as the semiconductor band edge potentials, the reorganization energies for charge transfer, the standard potential of redox species in solution, the density and energy of surface state populations, and the presence of an insulating (tunneling) layer individually and collectively dictate the observable current-potential responses. With this information, the methoxylation of Si surfaces was evaluated by analysis of the change in voltammetric responses during the course of prolonged immersion in methanol. The electrochemical data were consistent with a surface methoxylation mechanism that depended on the standard potential of redox species dissolved in solution. Estimates of the enthalpies of adsorption as well as the potential-dependent rate constant for surface methoxylation were obtained. Collectively, these measurements supported the contention that the rates of Si surface reactions can be systematically tuned by exposure to dissolved outer-sphere electron acceptors. Moreover, the data represent the quantitative utility of voltammetry with SUMEs for the measurement of semiconductor/liquid contacts.

Abstract: Objectives: The primary aim was to establish normative values of isometric plantarflexor muscle strength in professional male rugby union players and compare forwards with backs. The secondary aims were to examine how individual playing position or age influences isometric plantarflexor strength., Design: Cross-sectional., Setting: Testing at professional rugby clubs., Participants: 355 players (201 forwards and 154 backs) from 9 clubs in the English Premiership club competition., Main Outcome Measures: Maximal unilateral isometric plantarflexion strength was measured, using a Fysiometer C-Station, in a seated position with a flexed knee and in maximal available dorsiflexion. Values are reported normalised to body mass and specific to playing position., Results: Mean combined limb isometric plantarflexion strength for the group was 193.1 kg (SD 32) or 1.86 xBW. (SD 0.31). Forwards were significantly weaker than backs (forwards = 1.75xBW (SD 0.26), backs = 2.00xBW (SD 0.28) (p=<0.0001)). Abstract: Complex three-dimensional in vitro organ-like models, or organoids, offer a unique biological tool with distinct advantages over two-dimensional cell culture systems, which can be too simplistic, and animal models, which can be too complex and may fail to recapitulate human physiology and pathology. Significant progress has been made in driving stem cells to differentiate into different organoid types, though several challenges remain. For example, many organoid models suffer from high heterogeneity, and it can be difficult to fully incorporate the complexity of in vivo tissue and organ development to faithfully reproduce human biology. Successfully addressing such limitations would increase the viability of organoids as models for drug development and preclinical testing. Abstract: Patients carrying autosomal dominant mutations in the histone/lysine acetyl transferases CBP or EP300 develop a neurodevelopmental disorder: Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS). The biological pathways underlying these neurodevelopmental defects remain elusive. Here, we unravel the contribution of a stress-responsive pathway to RSTS. We characterize the structural and functional interaction between CBP/EP300 and heat-shock factor 2 (HSF2), a tuner of brain cortical development and major player in prenatal stress responses in the neocortex: CBP/EP300 acetylates HSF2, leading to the stabilization of the HSF2 protein. Consequently, RSTS patient-derived primary cells show decreased levels of HSF2 and HSF2-dependent alteration in their repertoire of molecular chaperones and stress response. Moreover, we unravel a CBP/EP300-HSF2-N-cadherin cascade that is also active in neurodevelopmental contexts, and show that its deregulation disturbs neuroepithelial integrity in 2D and 3D organoid models of cerebral development, generated from RSTS patient-derived iPSC cells, providing a molecular reading key for this complex pathology., (© 2022. Abstract: Purpose: This pilot research project sought to determine if an intensive accent modification training program that included See the Sound-Visual Phonics and prosodic gestures improved articulation, prosody, and intelligibility measures in refugees from Burma., Participants: Four individuals (two men, two women) aged 20-67 participated in this study, and they were recruited from a state organization supporting refugees who have resettled in the United States., Method: All participants completed the Proficiency in Oral English Communication (POEC) and Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech (AIDS) to measure pre- and posttraining changes. The duration of this study was 6 weeks and consisted of 1 week of pretesting, 4 weeks of accent modification training, and 1 week of posttesting. Participants attended a total of twelve 50-min accent modification training sessions, including eight individual sessions (twice per week) and four group sessions (once per week), which provided a functional way to practice newly acquired skills in a scripted conversational-type format. Trained and untrained articulation and prosody probes were used to establish baselines and measure change., Results: All four participants showed gains across articulation and prosody (in untrained and trained items). On pre- and posttest measures, three of the four participants also made gains on the broad measures of the AIDS and the POEC., Conclusion: Findings support that a brief and intensive multimodality accent modification program can be beneficial.

Abstract: The mass of the W boson, a mediator of the weak force between elementary particles, is tightly constrained by the symmetries of the standard model of particle physics. The Higgs boson was the last missing component of the model. After observation of the Higgs boson, a measurement of the W boson mass provides a stringent test of the model. We measure the W boson mass, M W , using data corresponding to 8.8 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a 1.96 tera-electron volt center-of-mass energy with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A sample of approximately 4 million W boson candidates is used to obtain [Formula: see text] , the precision of which exceeds that of all previous measurements combined (stat, statistical uncertainty; syst, systematic uncertainty; MeV, mega-electron volts; c , speed of light in a vacuum). This measurement is in significant tension with the standard model expectation.

25. An Association between Bioavailable 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Bone Mineral Density in a Diverse Cohort of Collegiate Athletes.

Abstract: Introduction: Although vitamin D is intimately involved in bone metabolism, the relationship between vitamin D status, as measured by serum total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration, and bone mineral density (BMD) is weak, particularly in non-White populations. Measurement of bioavailable 25(OH)D has been suggested as a better indicator of vitamin D status than total 25(OH)D concentration. To date, the bioavailable 25(OH)D biomarker has been explored minimally in athletic populations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between total and bioavailable 25(OH)D concentrations and BMD in collegiate athletes., Methods: NCAA Division I basketball and swimming athletes served as study participants (n = 53; 28 females, 25 males; 28 basketball players, 25 swimmers). All participants completed dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans for analysis of BMD, blood draws for vitamin D measures, and diet/lifestyle questionnaires., Results: Overall, total 25(OH)D was 80.0 + 13.9 nmol·L-1 and bioavailable 25(OH)D was 6.0 ± 1.9 nmol·L-1. There was strong disagreement between total 25(OH)D and bioavailable 25(OH)D concentrations (κ = -0.299, r = -0.129) (P = 0.100); 53% of total participants and 77% of Black participants were classified differently (low vs normal vitamin D status) based on total and bioavailable 25(OH)D criteria. Black participants had significantly lower total 25(OH)D and higher bioavailable 25(OH)D concentrations than White participants (59.5 vs 102.5 nmol·L-1 and 7.9 vs 5.4 nmol·L-1, respectively) (P < 0.001). Total 25(OH)D and total BMD were not correlated, but bioavailable 25(OH)D and total BMD demonstrated a positive correlation (r = 0.618, P < 0.01)., Conclusions: These results suggest that bioavailable 25(OH)D concentration may be a better clinical measure of vitamin D status than total 25(OH)D as related to BMD in collegiate athletes, particularly in Black athletes. Abstract: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a severe brain disorder, characterized by psychotic, negative, and cognitive symptoms, affecting 1% of the population worldwide. The precise etiology of SCZ is still unknown; however, SCZ has a high heritability and is associated with genetic, environmental, and social risk factors. Even though the genetic contribution is indisputable, the discrepancies between transcriptomics and proteomics in brain tissues are consistently challenging the field to decipher the disease pathology. Here we provide an overview of the state of the art of neuronal two-dimensional and three-dimensional model systems that can be combined with proteomics analyses to decipher specific brain pathology and detection of alternative entry points for drug development., (© 2021 AlphaMed Press.)

Abstract: The funny current, I f , was first recorded in the heart 40 or more years ago by Dario DiFrancesco and others. Since then, we have learnt that I f plays an important role in pacemaking in the sinus node, the innate pacemaker of the heart, and more recently evidence has accumulated to show that I f may play an important role in action potential conduction through the atrioventricular (AV) node. Evidence has also accumulated to show that regulation of the transcription and translation of the underlying Hcn genes plays an important role in the regulation of sinus node pacemaking and AV node conduction under normal physiological conditions - in athletes, during the circadian rhythm, in pregnancy, and during postnatal development - as well as pathological states - ageing, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, diabetes and atrial fibrillation. There may be yet more pathological conditions involving changes in the expression of the Hcn genes. Here, we review the role of I f and the underlying HCN channels in physiological and pathological changes of the sinus and AV nodes and we begin to explore the signalling pathways (microRNAs, transcription factors, GIRK4, the autonomic nervous system and inflammation) involved in this regulation.
