- Abstract
Analytic compartmental models are currently used in mathematical epidemiology to forecast the COVID-19 pandemic evolution and explore the impact of mitigation strategies. In general, such models treat the population as a single entity, losing the social, cultural and economical specificities. We present a network model that uses socio-demographic datasets with the highest available granularity to predict the spread of COVID-19 in the province of Barcelona. The model is flexible enough to incorporate the effect of containment policies, such as lockdowns or the use of protective masks, and can be easily adapted to future epidemics. We follow a stochastic approach that combines a compartmental model with detailed individual microdata from the population census, including social determinants and age-dependent strata, and time-dependent mobility information. We show that our model reproduces the dynamical features of the disease across two waves and demonstrates its capability to become a powerful tool for simulating epidemic events, Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, several commentators, especially from non-academic fields, speculated about a potential exodus from urban to rural areas. However, this hypothesis has not been confirmed due to a lack of data with information capturing changes of residence at local level. This issue of Perspectives Demogràfiques offers the main results of a study led by the Centre for Demographic Studies and the Autonomous University of Barcelona which analyses internal migration between cities, suburbs, and rural areas in 2020, compared to migration patterns during the four years preceding the pandemic. The analysis used microdata from the Residential Variation Statistics (EVR) of the Spanish Statistical Office (INE) which cover all changes of residence in the country’s 8,131 municipalities. The results show significant changes in internal migration patterns during 2020. Inmigration to cities decreased, while out-migration increased, especially to rural areas. The latter flow had an important demographic impact on country villages. Despite these changes, internal migratory movements between and within urban areas dominated, as they did prior to the pandemic. At the same time, monthly data suggest that the changes are likely a temporary outcome.

Although housing policy issues have been widely discussed in Brazil, most quantitative studies have analyzed the housing shortage, whereas demographic demand for housing has hardly been discussed. In this sense, the article’s aim is to place the demographic demand for housing in the foreground as a determinant factor for the estimation of housing construction needs. At the same time, this research addresses the policy debate emerging from recent and future trends in housing formation in the urban region of São Paulo by carrying out our own estimates and projections on quantitative household dynamics. Three forecast scenarios (minimum, intermediate and maximum) are considered. The main policy implication is that fulfilling the young households’ demand will increasingly depend on the reuse of already built housing stock, released by the dissolution outflow of older households. Altres ajuts: GLOBFAM project ; CERCA Programme ; Talent Programme, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2018-ALG) ; eS-MiData Project, Comunidad de Madrid (447379001), We utilized all Spanish marriage records available at the municipality level from 2005-2007 to model spatial variations in intermarriage. We constructed a spatial regime zero-inflated Poisson model and grouped-data probit model, with spatially lagged regressors, to predict the absolute and relative presence of intermarriage between Spaniards and migrants based on structural characteristics of the local marriage markets and their neighboring areas (i.e., relative group size, homogeneity of national origins, and sex ratio indicators). Our models do not assume collapsibility of the marriage market. Instead, they incorporate the local dimension of the marriage market and examine the association between intermarriage and structural variables at the spatial local level. The model also investigates intermarriage variation by size of place. The local characteristics of the marriage markets are robust indicators of both the absolute and relative importance of intermarriage, but their impact varies by size of municipality. The relative size of the migrant community positively impacts intermarriage. The homogeneity of the origins of migrants is negatively related to it. The impact of sex ratios in the migrant and native communities on intermarriage is not uniform across all municipalities and is not always related to more intermarriage.

- Abstract
Risk estimators for COVID-19 propagation based on the incidence rate of new cases can be misleading as they usually fail to account for the fraction of population immunized by infection or vaccination. This misconception yields different incidence rates, as we illustrate using the daily number of COVID-19 reported cases in Spain during the pre-vaccine period, between 15/01/2020 and 11/07/2021. An increase in the incidence rate of about 7% is found when properly accounting for the population at risk. Our results demonstrate that accounting for dynamic changes to the immunized fraction of the population is necessary for accurate risk estimation. We hope that our findings can lead to more effective strategies for pandemic response.

While levels of internal mobility have been trending down in many advanced economies, the interregional migration rates of Spanish young adults have increased. This paper analyses the internal movements of the Spanish-born population aged 25–39 between NUTS-2 regions from 1992 to 2018, including sub-periods linked to the Spanish economic context. The analysis incorporates the urban–rural dimension within each region and the educational level of migrants, a variable that has not been included in Spanish internal migration studies. We used flow register data of migration and sociodemographic information from the Labor Force Survey. The results show that migrations between regions have become more unbalanced over time, especially since the 2008 crisis. In addition, a new trend of out-migration from cities in peripheral regions has been detected, which contrasts with the former high level of rural out-migration. A great educational selectivity of out-migrants and a growing internal brain drain have also been found. Moreover, qualified human capital accumulation has been increasing in Madrid. Altres ajuts: Alan Turing Institute in the United Kingdom (1162533) Existing empirical work has analysed the impacts of COVID-19 on mortality, fertility and international migration. Less is known about the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the patterns of internal migration. Anecdotal reports of mass migration from large cities to less populated areas have emerged, but lack of data has prevented empirically assessing this hypothesis. Drawing on geographically granular administrative population register data, we aim to analyse the extent of change in the patterns of internal migration across the urban hierarchy in Spain during 2020. Our results show a decline of 2.5% in the number of internal migration moves, particularly during the early stages of the pandemic, returning to pre-pandemic levels in late 2020. Results also reveal unusually large net migration losses in core cities and net migration gains in rural areas. Net migration losses in cities and gains in rural areas particularly accumulated following the elimination of the strict lockdown measures in June. Yet, these net losses and gains trended to pre-pandemic levels in late 2020, and movements between cities, and between cities and suburbs, continued to dominate the internal migration system. Thus, while the COVID-19 pandemic exerted notable changes in the geographic balance of internal migration flows, these changes appear to have been temporary and did not significantly alter the existing structures of the national migration system.

- Abstract
BackgroundIntraurban sociodemographic risk factors for COVID-19 have yet to be fully understood. We investigated the relationship between COVID-19 incidence and sociodemographic factors in Barcelona at a fine-grained geography.MethodsThis cross-sectional ecological study is based on 10 550 confirmed cases of COVID-19 registered during the first wave in the municipality of Barcelona (population 1.64 million). We considered 16 variables on the demographic structure, urban density, household conditions, socioeconomic status, mobility and health characteristics for 76 geographical units of analysis (neighbourhoods), using a lasso analysis to identify the most relevant variables. We then fitted a multivariate Quasi-Poisson model that explained the COVID-19 incidence by neighbourhood in relation to these variables.ResultsNeighbourhoods with: (1) greater population density, (2) an aged population structure, (3) a high presence of nursing homes, (4) high proportions of individuals who left their residential area during lockdown and/or (5) working in health-related occupations were more likely to register a higher number of cases of COVID-19. Conversely, COVID-19 incidence was negatively associated with (6) percentage of residents with post-secondary education and (7) population born in countries with a high Human Development Index.ConclusionLike other historical pandemics, the incidence of COVID-19 is associated with neighbourhood sociodemographic factors with a greater burden faced by already deprived areas. Because urban social and health injustices already existed in those geographical units with higher COVID-19 incidence in Barcelona, the current pandemic is likely to reinforce both health and social inequalities, and urban environmental injustice all together.

This research aims to simultaneously fill two gaps in the Spanish literature on migration: (1) interregional and interprovincial mobility patterns by educational attainment and (2) the internal migration trends of young Spaniards during the XXI century. To do so, we use four sources from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística: the 2001 and 2011 census, the Padrón de Españoles Residentes en el Extranjero in 2011, the Estadística de Variaciones Residenciales and the Encuesta de Población Activa from 1992 to 2018. It is well-known that Spain shows low levels of internal migration, and therefore, limited redistribution of the population due to this type of mobility. However, the results of this doctoral thesis show that there are significant spatial variations when analysing internal migration by educational attainment. Interregional and interprovincial migration exhibit an equilibrium between people without a university degree moving in and out of every region and province. Nonetheless, internal migration among university graduates shows brain drain in the peripheral provinces of the interior and north-west of Spain, mainly in Castile y León, and brain gain in Madrid. In addition, interregional migration of young Spaniards has increased during the XXI century, leading to growing inequalities in the mobility of human capital. The intensity of interregional migration has risen due to an increase in out-migration of college graduates from sending regions to the global cities, mostly to Madrid, since the Great Recession of 2008. Moreover, the provincial capitals within the sending regions are currently the municipalities with the greatest population loss due to interregional migration, whereas rural areas were the most affected places in previous decades. The loss of college graduates through internal migration is much higher than that caused by the emigration of qualified Spaniards abroad, which is of lesser importance in terms of the number of people involved. Immigration mitigated population decline and ageing, and helped to increase the number of births in sending regions, but it did not compensate for the loss of native university graduates due to internal migration. Most foreigners who arrived in the sending regions had a low or medium level of education, while those with university studies migrated to the same areas where national college graduates moved - being Barcelona the main destination for foreigners with a university degree -.
