31. Experimental investigations of multiple heat storage units utilizing supercooling of sodium acetate trihydrate:Stability in application size units

Abstract

Stable supercooling of sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT) composites can be used to store heat over long periods. When the melted SAT is supercooled and in temperature equilibrium with the ambient, the latent heat of fusion is essentially stored without further heat loss. The main limitation of this technology is that the supercooled SAT may crystalize spontaneously and release the stored heat before desired if the storage design does not allow for the principle to work. These investigations elucidate the effects of charge and discharge temperatures and durations on the stability of the supercooling in storage units designed for domestic hot water application. A test rig with 10 identical heat storage units with water and 35 kg sodium acetate trihydrate composite was set up. Multiple heating and cooling cycles were carried out with charge temperatures between 84 °C and 94 °C for various durations and with discharge temperatures from 10 °C to 35 °C. The investigations showed that charging the storage units with an inlet temperature of 89 or 92 °C resulted in the highest occurrences of stable supercooling. Discharging with inlet temperatures of 10 °C resulted in higher occurrence of spontaneous solidification during discharge compared to higher inlet temperatures. There was a large deviation in how each tank performed. The best performing tank achieved stable supercooling in 87 % of the test cycles and the worst performing tank achieved stable supercooling in 30 % of the test cycles.

32. A Dual Relaxation Method for Neural Network Verification.

Abstract

In the robustness verification of neural networks, formal methods have been used to give deterministic guarantees for neural networks. However, recent studies have found that the verification method of single-neuron relaxation in this field has an inherent convex barrier that affects its verification capability. To address this problem, we propose a new verification method by combining dual-neuron relaxation and linear programming. This method captures the dependencies between different neurons in the same hidden layer by adding a two-neuron joint constraint to the linear programming model, thus overcoming the convex barrier problem caused by relaxation for only a single neuron. Our method avoids the combination of exponential inequality constraints and can be computed in polynomial time. Experimental results show that we can obtain tighter bounds and achieve more accurate verification than single-neuron relaxation methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Extracellular traps (ETs) are a specialized form of innate immune defense in which leukocytes release ETs composed of chromatin and active proteins to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms. In addition to the anti-infection effect of ETs, researchers have also discovered their involvement in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disease, tumors, autoimmune disease, and allergic disease. Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease involving multiple immune cells. The increased level of ETs in asthma patients suggests that ETs play an important role in the pathogenesis of asthma. Here we review the research work on the formation mechanism, roles, and therapeutic strategies of ETs released by neutrophils, eosinophils, and macrophages in asthma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective The aim of this study was to compare metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) with other methods, including Xpert MTB/RIF, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) culture, and acid-fast bacillus (AFB) staining in the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Methods The data of 186 patients with suspected PTB were retrospectively collected from January 2020 to May 2021 at Tongji Hospital. BALF samples were collected from all patients and analyzed using AFB staining, MTB culture, Xpert MTB/RIF, and mNGS. Results Of the 186 patients, 38 patients were ultimately diagnosed as PTB. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing exhibited a sensitivity of 78.95%, which was higher than AFB staining (27.59%) and MTB culture (44.12%) but similar to Xpert MTB/RIF (72.73%). Utilization of combined methods demonstrates improvement for PTB diagnosis. In support of this, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the combination of mNGS and MTB culture (0.933, 95% CI: 0.871, 0.995) was larger than those of mNGS, Xpert MTB/RIF, MTB culture, and the combination of Xpert MTB/RIF and MTB culture. Conclusion The sensitivity of mNGS in the diagnosis of PTB using BALF specimen is similar to Xpert MTB/RIF. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing in combination with MTB culture may further improve the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis. 50. Numerical investigation of the photo-thermal characteristics of a direct absorption solar collector using Monte Carlo and finite volume methods

Abstract

In this study, a novel model of photothermal conversion in a direct absorption solar collector based on the Monte Carlo and finite volume methods was built and validated and the temperatures of the novel and traditional solar collectors were compared. The sensitivity of the parameters to the radiative heat loss was investigated. Finally, the radiative heat transfer characteristics were discussed using the radiative exchange factor. The results of this study validated the advantages of the novel solar collector at both the surface and fluid temperatures. Under the conditions used in this study, the maximum temperature difference of the novel solar collector was 30 K, compared with 193 K for the traditional solar collector. Furthermore, the collector was divided into several units along the flow direction. The radiative exchange factor indicated that with an increase in the attenuation coefficient, the percentage of radiation intensity in the total solar radiation absorbed by the corresponding unit increased. Simultaneously, it decreased with an increase in the incident angle and scattering albedo. These results provide a reference for addressing the low efficiency and thermal damage caused by traditional solar collectors at high temperatures.
