To guide social interaction, people often rely on expectations about the traits of other people, based on markers of social group membership (i.e., stereotypes). Although the influence of stereotypes on social behavior is widespread, key questions remain about how traits inferred from social-group membership are instantiated in the brain and incorporated into neural computations that guide social behavior. Here, we show that the human lateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) represents the content of stereotypes about members of different social groups in the service of social decision-making. During functional MRI scanning, participants decided how to distribute resources across themselves and members of a variety of social groups in a modified Dictator Game. Behaviorally, we replicated our recent finding that inferences about others' traits, captured by a two-dimensional framework of stereotype content (warmth and competence), had dissociable effects on participants' monetary-allocation choices: recipients' warmth increased participants’ aversion to advantageous inequity (i.e., earning more than recipients), and recipients’ competence increased participants’ aversion to disadvantageous inequity (i.e., earning less than recipients). Neurally, representational similarity analysis revealed that others' traits in the two-dimensional space were represented in the temporoparietal junction and superior temporal sulcus, two regions associated with mentalizing, and in the lateral OFC, known to represent inferred features of a decision context outside the social domain. Critically, only the latter predicted individual choices, suggesting that the effect of stereotypes on behavior is mediated by inference-based decision-making processes in the OFC.

A non-destructive method for detecting sub-micrometer-sized micropipes on an entire wafer surface is investigated. Since it is difficult to detect sub-micrometer-sized micropipes due to their small core size, a non-destructively and accurately detecting method is required. To solve the issue, we focus on a characteristic depression generated around micropipes, namely, line-shaped depressions. In this paper, the location of line-shaped depressions is identified by using optical inspection, and the line-shaped depressions are distinguished whether micropipes exhibit line-shaped depression or not by using mirror electron microscope observation as high-resolution inspection. The accuracy of the distinction results is confirmed by scanning electron microscope observation, and electrical characteristics of the P–N diode are fabricated using the inspected wafer. Furthermore, the sub-micrometer-sized micropipes are observed at the sites of leakage current identified by emission microscopy. Additionally, device simulation of the blocking-voltage characteristics of P–N diodes suggests that the increase in leakage current depends on the electric field at the sub-micrometer-sized micropipes, regardless of their core size. Background: Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital anomaly in which the thoracic and abdominal cavity structures are completely opposite to normal. Performing robot-assisted surgery in these patients is difficult because of these anomalies. A few reports have described robot-assisted surgery for rectal cancer in patients with SIT, but no reports to date have described robot-assisted surgery for colon cancer. Case presentation: A 74-year-old female presented with abdominal pain and was diagnosed with ascending colon cancer and SIT. We carefully planned the surgical procedure and performed robot-assisted hemi-colectomy. Although we used unusual port placement, the operation was performed safely. The patient was discharged without any complications. Conclusions: Robot-assisted surgery is safe and efficient for patients with anatomical anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The compression properties of wood perpendicular to the grain is an important resistance mechanism in timber joints, especially wood-to-wood joints. Hence, improving the compression properties of wood is essential to developing timber joints with high resistance performance. In this study, we attempted to improve the compression properties using a resin impregnation technique. Three compression tests were conducted: loading at the full surface of the specimen, loading at the local part of the specimen with the unloaded part expanding in the tangential direction, and loading at the local part of the specimen with the unloaded part expanding in the longitudinal direction. Two types of resins were used: urethane and acryl. For compression loading on the full surface, the stiffness was increased by resin impregnation in the case of acryl impregnation. However, the yield load did not increase significantly. In the cases of compression loading in the local part and unloaded part expanding in the tangential direction, the stiffness increased when acryl was used, and the yield load increased when both resins were used. Significant increment in the properties were observed when the local compression load acted on the specimens with the unloaded parts expanding in the longitudinal direction. When urethane and a 10 mm incision depth were used, the stiffness and yield load increased 1.35 and 2.54 times, respectively. When using acryl and a 10 mm incision depth, the stiffness and yield load increased 1.64 and 2.93 times, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alexander disease (AxD) is an intractable neurodegenerative disorder caused by GFAP mutations. It is a primary astrocyte disease with a pathological hallmark of Rosenthal fibres within astrocytes. AxD astrocytes show several abnormal phenotypes. Our previous study showed that AxD astrocytes in model mice exhibit aberrant Ca2+ signals that induce AxD aetiology. Here, we show that microglia have unique phenotypes with morphological and functional alterations, which are related to the pathogenesis of AxD. Immunohistochemical studies of 60TM mice (AxD model) showed that AxD microglia exhibited highly ramified morphology. Functional changes in microglia were assessed by Ca2+ imaging using hippocampal brain slices from Iba1-GCaMP6-60TM mice and two-photon microscopy. We found that AxD microglia showed aberrant Ca2+ signals, with high frequency Ca2+ signals in both the processes and cell bodies. These microglial Ca2+ signals were inhibited by pharmacological blockade or genetic knockdown of P2Y12 receptors but not by tetrodotoxin, indicating that these signals are independent of neuronal activity but dependent on extracellular ATP from non-neuronal cells. Our single-cell RNA sequencing data showed that the expression level of Entpd2 , an astrocyte-specific gene encoding the ATP-degrading enzyme NTPDase2, was lower in AxD astrocytes than in wild-type astrocytes. In situ ATP imaging using the adeno-associated virus vector GfaABC1D ATP1.0 showed that exogenously applied ATP was present longer in 60TM mice than in wild-type mice. Thus, the increased ATP level caused by the decrease in its metabolizing enzyme in astrocytes could be responsible for the enhancement of microglial Ca2+ signals. To determine whether these P2Y12 receptor-mediated Ca2+ signals in AxD microglia play a significant role in the pathological mechanism, a P2Y12 receptor antagonist, clopidogrel, was administered. Clopidogrel significantly exacerbated pathological markers in AxD model mice and attenuated the morphological features of microglia, suggesting that microglia play a protective role against AxD pathology via P2Y12 receptors. Taken together, we demonstrated that microglia sense AxD astrocyte dysfunction via P2Y12 receptors as an increase in extracellular ATP and alter their morphology and Ca2+ signalling, thereby protecting against AxD pathology. Although AxD is a primary astrocyte disease, our study may facilitate understanding of the role of microglia as a disease modifier, which may contribute to the clinical diversity of AxD. In this study, we examined the etch pits formed by molten alkali etching on beta-gallium oxide (β-Ga2O3) (001) bulk wafers and their dislocations to understand the behavior of crystal defects in β-Ga2O3. For this, we used focused ion beam (FIB), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The FIB–STEM observation shows that the etch pits, named Cannonball type, correspond to dislocation propagation on the (100) plane, and the asymmetry of etch pit shapes is proportional to the propagation angle of dislocations. These findings allow for the determination of the propagation angles of dislocation in β-Ga2O3 without using any FIB preprocessing of cross-sectional STEM observations. SEM was used to examine more than 100 Cannonball-type etch pits, and the propagation angle distribution of the associated dislocations was derived using the deviation of the core of each etch pit. Our results show that the propagation angle distribution is almost flat regardless of its angle; however, with lower occurrences at around 20° and 70°, the core deviation ratio was 1:2 in the ± [010] direction. Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare benign systemic histiocytic proliferation characterized by massive lymph node enlargement and sometimes associated with extranodal involvement. Even though it is considered to be benign, death can occur depending on the extent and location. Our case highlights a primary extranodal site of the right pinna with extension through the Eustachian tube to the subglottis. A previously healthy 15-year-old female presented with 1-year right pinna swelling, slowly enlarging and becoming more bothersome. An incisional biopsy was performed on the ear along with S100 staining yielding a diagnosis. After multidisciplinary case discussion, clofarabine monotherapy and systemic therapy for Langerhans cell histiocytosis has started. Rosai-Dorfman disease can be a general disorder, often affecting the lymph nodes. Unlike a nodal disease, extranodal disease could involve any site on the patient's anatomy. Head and neck lesions are the most common extranodal lesions. Rosai-Dorfman disease is self-limited in more than 20% of the cases with spontaneous regression without intervention; 70% of the patients have noticeable symptoms and vital organ involvement requiring treatments such as surgery, steroids, radiation, and chemotherapy. In our case, the patient had wide involvement and presented without any serious breathing difficulties; we decided to start with monotherapy with chemotherapy and systematic glucocorticoid treatment.
