OBJECTIVE: Given the critical need for efficient and tailored suicide screening for youth presenting in the emergency department (ED), this study establishes validated screening score thresholds for the Computerized Adaptive Screen for Suicidal Youth (CASSY) and presents an example of a suicide risk classification pathway. METHODS: Participants were primarily from the Study One derivation cohort of the Emergency Department Screen for Teens at Risk for Suicide (ED-STARS) enrolled in collaboration with Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Networks (PECARN). CASSY scores corresponded to the predicted probabilities of a suicide attempt in the next 3 months and risk thresholds were classified as minimal (10%). CASSY scores were compared to risk thresholds derived from clinical consensus and ED complaints and dispositions. CASSY risk thresholds were also examined as predictors of future suicide attempts in the Study Two validation cohort of ED-STARS. RESULTS: A total of 1452 teens were enrolled with a median age of 15.2 years, 59.5% were female, 55.6% were White, 22% were Black, 22.3% were Latinx, and 42.8% received public assistance. The clinical consensus suicide risk groups were strongly associated with the CASSY-predicted risk thresholds. Suicide attempts in the Study Two cohort occurred at a frequency consistent with the CASSY-predicted thresholds. CONCLUSIONS: The CASSY can be a valuable tool in providing patient-specific risk probabilities for a suicide attempt at 3 months and tailor the threshold cutoffs based on the availability of local mental health resources. We give an example of a clinical risk pathway, which should include segmentation of the ED population by medical versus psychiatric chief complaint.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents. As nearly 20% of adolescents visit emergency departments (EDs) each year, EDs have an opportunity to identify previously unrecognized suicide risk. A novel Computerized Adaptive Screen for Suicidal Youth (CASSY) was shown in a multisite study to be predictive for suicide attempts within 3 months. This study uses site-specific data to estimate the cost of CASSY implementation with adolescents in general EDs. When used universally with all adolescents who are present and able to participate in the screening, the average cost was USD 5.77 per adolescent. For adolescents presenting with non-behavioral complaints, the average cost was USD 2.60 per adolescent. Costs were driven primarily by time and personnel required for the further evaluation of suicide risk for those screening positive. Thus, universal screening using the CASSY, at very low costs relative to the cost of an ED visit, can facilitate services needed for at-risk adolescents.

AIMS: There has been a marked increase in suicide fatalities among college-age students in recent years. Moreover, heavy alcohol use, a well-known risk factor for suicide, is present on most campuses. Yet, no prospective studies have examined alcohol use patterns among college students as predictors of suicidal behaviors. METHODS: Online of 40,335 students at four universities took place at the beginning of four academic years, 2015-2018. Of these, 2296 met criteria for an increased risk of suicidal behavior and completed 1- and/or 6-month follow-up evaluation(s). Baseline assessments included the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test to quantify alcohol consumption and resulting problems, and measures of depression, suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior. RESULTS: Suicide attempts during follow-up were reported by 35 (1.5%) of high-risk students. Regression analyses indicated that baseline severity of alcohol use consequences, but not amount of alcohol consumption, was associated with greater odds of a follow-up suicide attempt after controlling for baseline suicidal ideation, functional impairment and history of suicide attempts. CONCLUSIONS: Among college students at elevated risk for suicide, the severity of alcohol-related consequences was a significant predictor of future suicide attempts. Alcohol consumption was not a significant predictor, suggesting that the amount students drink is less of a concern for suicidal behavior than are the problems (e.g. failing to meet expectations, experiencing blackouts) associated with drinking.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, yet many students with elevated suicide risk do not seek professional help. This study identified suicide risk profiles among college students and examined these in relation to students perceived barriers to professional help-seeking. Data were obtained from college students (n = 1689) identified to be at elevated risk for suicide based at four US universities. Latent class analysis was performed to determine risk profiles, followed by examinations of differences in help-seeking barriers by profile groupings. Results revealed three student groupings: (1) moderate internalizing and externalizing symptoms (with low alcohol misuse), (2) highest internalizing and externalizing symptoms (with highest social disconnection), and (3) lowest internalizing symptoms and low externalizing (with highest social connection and alcohol misuse). Group 1 included the youngest and most racially and sexually diverse students, Group 2 endorsed the most help-seeking barriers, and Group 3 endorsed the fewest barriers. Group 2 is especially concerning, considering the severe clinical characteristics, high number of barriers, and low connectedness to others for potential support. Understanding these differences across risk and barrier profiles is an important step towards developing tailored approaches to increase mental health care in college populations.

This report uses a large sample of college students to explore relationships between alcohol use, depressive symptoms, and suicidality. Methods: A brief suicide screen was completed by 40,335 university students at four pariticipating sites. Assessments quantified recent depressive symptoms, alcohol use, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. Results: Problems from alcohol use were consistently associated with suicidal thoughts and attempts in the previous month, and in the previous year, but the quantity of alcohol used was not. Alcohol related problems exerted effects on the likelihood of both suicide ideation and attempts beyond those explained by their relationship with depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Screens for individuals at increased risk for suicidal ideation and behavior should emphasize alcohol-related problems over quantification of alcohol intake.

Depression and suicidal ideation have substantially increased among college students, yet many students with clinically significant symptoms do not perceive their distress as warranting mental health services. Personalized feedback (PF) interventions deliver objective data, often electronically, comparing an individual's reported symptoms or behaviors to a group norm. Several studies have shown promise for PF interventions in the context of mood and depression, yet little is known regarding how, and for whom, mood-focused PF interventions might be best deployed. The primary aim of this study was to examine the sociodemographic, clinical, and treatment-seeking factors associated with reviewing PF reports on emotional distress among college students (N = 1,673) screening positive for elevated suicide risk and not receiving mental health treatment. Results indicated that PF engagement was greatest among those with higher depression scores, and those reporting privacy/stigma concerns as barriers to treatment. Sexual minority students were more likely to review their PF than heterosexual students. Taken together, PF interventions may be a useful tool for engaging those with greater clinical acuity, and those hesitant to seek in-person care. Further research is warranted to examine the circumstances in which PF interventions might be used in isolation, or as part of a multitiered intervention strategy.

Objective: Given increases in mental health utilization among college and university students, thisstudy examines clinical and socio-demographic characteristics in students presenting to psychiatricemergency services. Participants: University students (N¼ 725; Mage ¼ 22 years, SD ¼ 4.0; 67%White) visiting psychiatric emergency services at a large academic health system between July 1,2012 and June 30, 2016. Methods: A retrospective review of students' electronic medical records,which included responses to the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale, was conducted. Results: Levels of suicide risk varied by students' self-identified race. Nonwhite students were more likely to endorse a suicide attempt in the past week and less likely to be taking psychiatric medications than White students. International students were more likely to report a lifetime history of multiple attempts. Conclusions: Disparities related to college student psychiatric emergencies warrant specific attention to specific racial/ethnic groups and international students to reduce and managemental health crises.

This study examined primary care provider (PCP) alignment with guideline-based care for adolescent depression screening and identified factors associated with post-screening responses. A retrospective chart review was conducted across 17 primary care clinics. Logistical regressions were estimated across provider specialties, sociodemographic factors, and patient clinical histories. Significant differences in follow-up and identification of depression were found among patients with more severe depression presentation. Follow-up screening was also more likely to be completed among patients with private insurance and less likely to occur among Black patients. Patients with significant mental health history of a mood concern, history of being prescribed psychotropic medication, were currently on medications at the time of the screening, or had a history of an internal mental health referral had a higher predicted probability of being identified as depressed on the patient problem list. Background: Suicide is among the leading causes of death for adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs), and there is a paucity of evidence-based suicide prevention-focused interventions tailored for this vulnerable population. Cognitive-Behavioral Suicide Prevention for psychosis (CBSPp) is a promising intervention developed in the UK that required modifications for delivery in community mental health (CMH) settings in the United States of American. This pilot trial evaluates the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of our modified CBSPp intervention in comparison to services as usual (SAU) within a CMH setting in a Midwestern state of the USA. Methods: This is a single-site randomized pilot trial with a planned enrollment of 60 adults meeting criteria for both SSD and SI/A. Eligible participants will be randomized 1:1 to either 10 sessions of CBSPp or SAU. Clinical and cognitive assessments will be conducted within a 4-waive design at baseline (prior to randomization and treatment) and approximately 1 month (mid-treatment), 3 months (post-treatment), and 5 months (follow-up) after baseline assessment. Qualitative interviews will also be conducted at post-treatment. The primary objective is to determine whether CBSPp is feasible and acceptable, involving examinations of recruitment rate, treatment engagement and adherence, retention and completion rates, and experiences in the CBSPp treatment and overall study. The secondary objective is to preliminarily evaluate whether modified CBSPp is associated with reductions in clinical (suicide ideation, suicide attempt, symptoms of psychosis, depression, and emergency/hospital service, hopelessness, defeat, and entrapment) and cognitive (information processing biases, appraisals, and schemas) outcomes in comparison to SAU from baseline to post-treatment assessment. Discussion: This randomized pilot trial will provide clinically relevant information about whether CBSPp can improve SI/A, depression, and psychosis among adults with SSDs. Testing this modified cognitive-behavioral suicide prevention-focused intervention has the potential for a large public health impact by increasing the intervention's utility and usability in CMH where many individuals with SSDs receive care, and ultimately working towards reductions in premature suicide death. Background: Despite evidence of the importance of interpersonal connectedness to our understanding of suicide risk, relatively little research has examined the protective and buffering effects of connectedness among adolescents. The aims of this study were to determine: (a) whether overall connectedness (composite of family, peer, and school) and specific domains of connectedness were related to a lower likelihood of suicide attempts, and (b) whether these factors buffer the prospective risk of suicide attempt for high‐risk subgroups (i.e., recent suicidal ideation and/or lifetime history of suicide attempt, peer victimization, or sexual and gender minority status). Methods: Participants were 2,897 adolescents (64.7% biological female), ages 12 to 17 (M = 14.6, SD = 1.6), recruited in collaboration with the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) from 14 emergency departments for the Emergency Department Screen for Teens at Risk for Suicide Study (ED‐STARS). Suicide risk and protective factors were assessed at baseline; 3‐ and 6‐month follow‐ups were completed (79.5% retention). Multivariable logistic regressions were conducted, adjusting for established suicide risk factors. Results: Higher overall connectedness and, specifically, school connectedness were associated with decreased likelihood of a suicide attempt across 6 months. Overall connectedness and connectedness domains did not function as buffers for future suicide attempts among certain high‐risk subgroups. The protective effect of overall connectedness was lower for youth with recent suicidal ideation or a suicide attempt history than for those without this history. Similarly, overall connectedness was protective for youth without peer victimization but not those with this history. Regarding specific domains, family connectedness was protective for youth without recent suicidal ideation or a suicide attempt history and peer connectedness was protective for youth without peer victimization but not youth with these histories. Conclusions: In this large and geographically diverse sample, overall and school connectedness were related prospectively to lower likelihood of suicide attempts, and connectedness was more protective for youth not in certain high‐risk subgroups. Background: Little is known about when youth may be at greatest risk for attempting suicide, which is critically important information for the parents, caregivers, and professionals who care for youth at risk. This study used adolescent and parent reports, and a case-crossover, within-subject design to identify 24-hour warning signs (WS) for suicide attempts. Methods: Adolescents (N = 1094, ages 13 to 18) with one or more suicide risk factors were enrolled and invited to complete bi-weekly, 8–10 item text message surveys for 18 months. Adolescents who reported a suicide attempt (survey item) were invited to participate in an interview regarding their thoughts, feelings/emotions, and behaviors/events during the 24-hours prior to their attempt (case period) and a prior 24-hour period (control period). Their parents participated in an interview regarding the adolescents' behaviors/events during these same periods. Adolescent or adolescent and parent interviews were completed for 105 adolescents (81.9% female; 66.7% White, 19.0% Black, 14.3% other). Results: Both parent and adolescent reports of suicidal communications and withdrawal from social and other activities differentiated case and control periods. Adolescent reports also identified feelings (self-hate, emotional pain, rush of feelings, lower levels of rage toward others), cognitions (suicidal rumination, perceived burdensomeness, anger/hostility), and serious conflict with parents as WS in multi-variable models. Conclusions: This study identified 24-hour WS in the domains of cognitions, feelings, and behaviors/events, providing an evidence base for the dissemination of information about signs of proximal risk for adolescent suicide attempts. This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to engaging with online interventions among 24 ethnoracially diverse college students self-identifying as being at risk for suicide. Thematic analysis was used to identify codes from focus groups. Participants shared mixed perceptions about online intervention use and effectiveness. Regarding barriers, they mentioned lack of motivation/self-discipline, artificiality, and lack of perceived need. Participants reported promotional information, incentives, and normalizing peer usage to facilitate uptake. Lastly, they mentioned program design, human coaching, and reminders to increase retention. Firearm-related injuries are the leading cause of death among youth in the United States, and rates of firearm-related suicide in rural youth are more than double those in urban youth. Although safe firearm storage has been shown to reduce firearm injuries, little is known about how to culturally tailor such interventions for rural families in the United States. Informed by community-based participatory methods, focus groups and key informant interviews were conducted to design a safe storage prevention strategy for rural families. Participants included a broad array of community stakeholders (n = 40; 60% male, 40% female; age 15–72, M = 36.9, SD = 18.9) who were asked to identify acceptable messengers, message content, and delivery mechanisms that were perceived as respectful to the strengths of rural culture. Independent coders analyzed qualitative data using an open coding technique. Emerging themes included (1) community norms, values, and beliefs about firearms; (2) reasons for ownership; (3) firearm safety; (4) storage practices; (5) barriers to safe storage; and (6) suggested intervention components. Firearms were described as a "way of life" and family tradition in rural areas. Owning firearms for hunting and protection influenced family storage decisions. Intervention strategies that use respected firearm experts as messengers, refer to locally derived data, and that reflect community pride in firearm safety and responsible ownership may improve the acceptability of prevention messages in rural areas. This study explores behavioral health services for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIANs) at six Urban Indian Health Programs (UIHPs). Interviews and focus groups with clinicians and staff inquired about behavioral health treatment available, service needs, client population, and financial and staffing challenges. Resulting site profiles were created based on focused coding and integrative memoing of site visit field notes and respondent transcripts. These six UIHPs evidenced diversity across multiple facets of service delivery even as they were united in their missions to provide accessible and effective behavioral health treatment to urban AIAN clients. Primary challenges to service provision included heterogenous client populations, low insurance coverage, limited provider knowledge, lack of resources, and incorporation of traditional healing. Collaborative research with UIHPs harbors the potential to recognize challenges, identify solutions, and share best practices across this crucial network of health care sites for improving urban AIAN well‐being. Using a nationally representative sample of young adults, this study examines COVID-induced financial hardship and its association with suicide risk (N = 1,087). About 40% experienced one or more financial hardship, a third reported having suicidal ideation, and 1.57% reported suicide attempt. The association between financial hardship and suicide risk was cumulative: Those reporting four or more financial hardships were 2.61 times more likely to report suicidal ideation and 24.27 times more likely to report a suicide attempt. The finding that COVID-related financial insecurity was associated with drastically elevated suicide risks highlights the need to assess financial hardship for suicide risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Victims of bullying, dating violence, and child maltreatment are all more likely than their peers to contemplate and attempt suicide in adolescence and young adulthood. However, knowledge of the relationship between violence and suicide risk is primarily limited to studies that isolate certain forms of victimization or examine several forms in additive risk models. We aim to move beyond the findings of basic descriptive studies by investigating whether multiple types of victimization elevate risk for suicide and whether latent profiles of victimization are more strongly related to suicide-related outcomes than are others. Primary data are from the first National Survey on Polyvictimization and Suicide Risk, a cross-sectional, nationally representative survey of emerging adults 18–29 in the United States (N = 1,077). A total of 50.2% of participants identified as cisgender female, followed by 47.4% cisgender male, and 2.3% transgender or nonbinary. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to establish profiles. Suicide-related variables were regressed onto victimization profiles. A four-class solution was determined to be the best fitting model: Interpersonal Violence (IV; 22%), Interpersonal + Structural Violence (I + STV; 7%), Emotional Victimization (EV; 28%), and Low/No Victimization (LV; 43%). Participants in I + STV had increased odds for high suicide risk (odds ratio = 42.05, 95% CI [15.45, 114.42]) compared to those in LV, followed by IV (odds ratio = 8.52, 95% CI [3.47, 20.94]) and EV (odds ratio = 5.17, 95% CI [2.08, 12.87]). Participants in I + STV reported significantly higher odds for nonsuicidal self-injury and suicide attempts compared to most classes. Public Policy Relevance Statement: Given that many young people experience varying forms of violence, identifying common patterns of experiences may help identify which groups of young adults are most at risk for suicidal behavior. This study found that young adults exposed to both interpersonal and structural forms of violence were at the greatest risk for suicide, including suicide attempts and nonsuicidal self-injury. Cross-cutting violence and suicide prevention policies are needed, which should specifically address structural forms of violence as it is often overlooked in intervention and prevention efforts. Background: Bereavement during childhood is associated with elevated rates of suicide‐related behaviours among youth. However, no interventions explicitly address suicidal ideation among bereaved youth. The Supporting Grieving Teens (SGT) programme was created as a preventive intervention to reduce suicide risk among bereaved youth. Methods: This preliminary open trial evaluated the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary outcomes of the SGT intervention among a sample of bereaved adolescents. Participants were 32 adolescents, 12–17 years of age (M = 14.44, SD = 1.56; 87.5% female, 31.3% Hispanic, 31.3% African American/Black and 25.0% non‐Hispanic White), seeking bereavement‐related services at a trauma and grief speciality outpatient clinic. Participants completed a two‐session web‐assisted intervention prior to enrolling in standard outpatient therapy. Results: There was a high rate of completion of the intervention, with 93.8% of those who provided assent completing both intervention sessions. Youth reported high levels of satisfaction with the intervention. Preliminary evaluation of outcomes demonstrated that the intervention was associated with small but significant reductions in thwarted belongingness and suicide ideation over the course of treatment and follow‐up. However, reliable change indices indicated reliable improvements for only a subset of participants. Limitations: This study utilised an open trial design without a control group, and so causality cannot be inferred. Additional limitations include the small sample size and limited variability in suicidal ideation in the sample. Conclusions: The intervention shows promise as a brief, web‐assisted psychosocial intervention for activating youths' existing social support networks. Background: Clinical assessments are a primary method for ascertaining suicide risk, yet the language used across measures is inconsistent. The implications of these discrepancies for adolescent responding are unknown, which is troubling as multiple research areas (i.e. on culture, mental health language, and suicide communication) indicate individuals from varying sociodemographic backgrounds may communicate differently regarding mental health concerns. The aims of the current study are to investigate whether a geographically diverse sample of adolescents respond differently to directly and indirectly phrased suicide attempt questions (i.e. directly phrased includes the term 'suicide' and indirectly asks about suicidal behavior without using 'suicide'), and to examine whether sociodemographic factors and history of mental health service usage relate to endorsement differences. Methods: Participants were N = 5909 adolescents drawn from the Emergency Department Screening for Teens at Risk for Suicide multi-site study. The lifetime suicide attempt was assessed with two items from an adapted version of the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS; Posner et al., 2008): (1) a directly phrased question asking about 'suicide attempts' and (2) an indirectly phrased question providing the definition of an attempt. Results: An adolescent majority (83.7%) consistently reported no lifetime suicide attempt across items, 10.1% consistently reported one or more lifetime attempts across items, and 6.2% of adolescents responded discordantly to the items. Conclusions: Multivariable models indicated multiple demographic and mental health service variables significantly predicted discordant responding, with a notable finding being that father/stepfather education level at or below high school education predicted endorsing only the direct question. Suicide is a leading cause of preventable death among adults diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Fewer studies have examined suicide thoughts and behaviors among community populations of adults with psychosis symptoms. The current study examined the relationships between psychosis symptomatology, depression, and suicide ideation and plan among a sample of adults in psychiatric emergency care. An Electronic Medical Record Search Engine was used to obtain data from Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) of an academic healthcare system in the United States. Patients included 712 adults who presented to PES from 2013 to 2020 with one or more symptom of psychosis and either suicide ideation or a recent suicide attempt. Data were examined in SPSS27 using logistic regressions. Patients were twice as likely to experience suicidal ideation when hallucinations were present and eight times more likely when depression was present. Also, patients were twice as likely to have a suicide plan when hallucinations were present and three-times more likely when depression was present. Delusions did not significantly relate to suicide ideation or plan. Study findings suggest the importance of incorporating positive symptom evaluations into suicide risk assessments and the formulation of risk among patients with psychosis symptoms. Background: The age-adjusted rate of suicide death in the USA has increased significantly since 2000 and little is known about national trends in non-fatal suicidal behaviors (ideation, plan, and attempt) among adults and their associated sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. This study examined trends in non-fatal suicidal behaviors among adults in the USA. Methods: Data were obtained from adults 18–65 years of age who participated in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), including mental health assessment, from 2009 to 2017 (n = 335 359). Examinations of data involved trend analysis methods with the use of logistic regressions and interaction terms. Results: Suicidal ideation showed fluctuation from 2009 to 2017, whereas suicide plan and attempt showed significantly positive linear trends with the odds increasing by an average of 3% and 4%, respectively. Suicide plan increased the most for females and adults ages 18–34, and attempt increased the most for adults with drug dependence. Both plan and attempt increased the most among adults who either had mental illness but were not in treatment or had no mental illness. Conclusions: Given attempted suicide is the strongest known risk factor for suicide death, reducing non-fatal suicidal behaviors including attempt are important public health and clinical goals. The interactional findings of age, sex, mental health status, and drug dependence point toward the importance of tailoring prevention efforts to various sociodemographic and clinical factors. International students were more likely to report a lifetime history of multiple attempts. Conclusions: Disparities related to college student psychiatric emergencies warrant specific attention to specific racial/ethnic groups and international students to reduce and manage mental health crises. This study examined the effectiveness of LET's CONNECT (LC), a community mentorship program based on the positive youth development model. Participants were 218 youth (66.5% girls), ages 12 to 15, who reported peer victimization, bullying perpetration, and/or low social connectedness. These youth were randomized to LC or the control group (community resource information). The LC program linked youth to community mentors who connected with youth and facilitated their involvement in social growth activities across a 16‐month period. Outcomes were assessed at 6 and 16 months with self‐report measures of social and community connectedness, thwarted belongingness, depression, self‐esteem, and suicidal ideation and behavior. In intent‐to‐treat analyses, LC was associated with modest positive effects for social connectedness, self‐esteem, and depression. It had no effects on suicidal ideation or behavior. Results suggest that LC has the potential to positively impact the developmental trajectories of youth dealing with the interpersonal challenges of victimization, bullying perpetration, or low social connectedness. LC implementation challenges and directions for further research are also discussed. Mobile technology offers new possibilities for assessing suicidal ideation and behavior in real- or near-real-time. It remains unclear how intensive longitudinal data can be used to identify proximal risk and inform clinical decision making. In this study of adolescent psychiatric inpatients (N = 32, aged 13-17 years, 75% female), we illustrate the application of a three-step process to identify early signs of suicide-related crises using daily diaries. Using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses, we considered the utility of 12 features—constructed using means and variances of daily ratings for six risk factors over the first 2 weeks postdischarge (observations = 360)—in identifying a suicidal crisis 2 weeks later. Models derived from single risk factors had modest predictive accuracy (area under the ROC curve [AUC] 0.46-0.80) while nearly all models derived from combinations of risk factors produced higher accuracy (AUCs 0.80-0.91). Background: Easy firearm access increases injury risk among adolescents. We evaluated the acceptability and feasibility of improving knowledge of a 3 min safe firearm storage education video in the paediatric emergency department., Methods: We conducted a single-centre block trial in a large paediatric emergency department (August 2020-2022). Participants were caregivers of adolescents (10-17 years) in firearm-owning households. First block participants (control) completed a baseline survey about child safety behaviours (including firearms). Second block participants (intervention) completed a baseline survey, watched the safe firearm storage video and evaluated acceptability. Participants completed a 3-month follow-up survey about firearm safety behaviours and knowledge recall. Demographic and clinical variables were compared between the intervention and control groups using Fisher's exact and χ 2 tests. McNemar's test was used to compare firearm storage behaviours at the initial and 3-month visit within each group., Results: Research staff approached 1264 caregivers; 371 consented to participate (29.4%) and 144 (38.8%) endorsed firearm ownership. There were 95 participants in the control group and 62 in the intervention group. Follow-up was lower in the intervention group (53.7% vs 37.1%, p=0.04). Among participants viewing the video, 80.3% liked the video and 50.0% felt they learnt something new from the video., Conclusions: Video-based firearm education in a paediatric emergency department is acceptable among a population of caregivers of adolescents with household firearms. This is a higher-risk group that may uniquely benefit from consistent education in the paediatric emergency department.
