Drinking is a common unhealthy behaviour among youth smokers aged 25 or below. However, the effects of drinking on smoking cessation outcomes are not well understood. This study aimed to explore the impact of drinking on smoking cessation outcomes among Hong Kong Chinese youth smokers who received smoking cessation counselling. This study adopted a cross-sectional design at the Youth Quitline, which is the only government-funded hotline providing telephone smoking cessation counselling to Hong Kong smokers aged 25 or younger. Of the 142 participants at the six-month follow-up, 75 were in the drinking group and 67 in the non-drinking group. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to identify any significant differences in self-reported quit rates, smoking reduction by at least 50%, quit attempts, and biochemically validated quit rates between the drinking and non-drinking groups. The results showed a significant difference in self-reported quit rate between the two groups at 6-month, but no significant difference in smoking reduction by at least 50%, quit attempts, and biochemically validated quit rate. Alcohol drinking and male were identified as significant factors decreasing self-reported quit rate at 6 months. The study revealed that drinking could decrease quit rates among young smokers who received counselling, but not their smoking reduction or quit attempts. Given the negative impact of drinking on smoking abstinence and the increased popularity of drinking among the youth, assessment of alcohol use and brief advice on smoking are recommended to be an integral part of smoking cessation counselling for youth smokers.

Abstract Background The post-insertion maintenance of central venous catheters(CVCs)is a common, vital procedure undertaken by nurses. Existing literature lacks a comprehensive review of evidence adoption for CVCs post-insertion maintenance specifically within the oncology context. This investigation assessed evidence-based practice by oncology nurses in the care of CVCs, elucidating facilitators and obstacles to this adoption process. Methods This was a sequential explanatory mixed methods study, executed from May 2022 to April 2023, adhering to the GRAMMS checklist. The study commenced with a cross-sectional study through clinical observation that scrutinized the adoption of scientific evidence for CVC maintenance, analyzing 1314 records from five hospitals in China. Subsequently, a semi-structured, in-depth interview with nurses based on the i-PARIHS framework was conducted to ascertain facilitators and barriers to evidence adoption for CVCs post-insertion maintenance. Fifteen nurses were recruited through purposive sampling. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize quantitative data, while content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Results An overall compliance rate of 90.0% was observed; however, two domains exhibited a lower adoption rate of less than 80%, namely disinfection of infusion connector and disinfection of skin and catheter. Three barriers and two facilitators were discerned from the interviews. Barriers encompassed (1) difficulty in accessing the evidence, (2) lack of involvement from nurse specialists, and (3) challenges from internal and external environments. Facilitators comprised (1) the positive attitudes of specialist nurses toward evidence application, and (2) the formation of a team specializing in intravenous therapy within hospitals. Conclusion There exists a significant opportunity to improve the adoption of evidence-based practices for CVC maintenance. Considering the identified barriers and facilitators, targeted interventions should be conceived and implemented at the organizational level to augment oncology evidence-based practice, especially the clinical evidence pertinent to infection control protocols. IntroductionPsychosocial intervention is imperative for treating alcohol use disorder (AUD), but there is no comprehensive evidence regarding its effectiveness. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in treating AUD amongadolescents and young adults.MethodsIn this systematic review and meta-analysis, articles were searched from EMBASE, PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Scopus. Also, articles were retrieved from gray literature. The quality of articles has been assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment.ResultsA total of 12 randomized controlled trials were included. Integrated family and CBT, CBT, guided self-change, and ecologically based family therapy had a mild effect in reducing alcohol use frequency. On the other hand, integrated motivational enhancement therapy and CBT (−0.71 [95% CI: −0.97, −0.45]) and common elements treatment approaches (4.5 [95% CI: 6.9, 2.2]) had the highest effect size for reducing alcohol use frequency and amount, respectively. In conclusion, most of the interventions had no significant effect on different drinking outcomes. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of combined interventions surpassed that of the single interventions. The effect of psychosocial interventions on abstinence was inconclusive. Therefore, future studies will explore alternative, newly emerged third-wave therapeutic approaches.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO, CRD42023435011, https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=435011.

BackgroundEvidence shows that using the AWARD (Ask, Warn, Advise, Refer, Do-it-again) model with service-learning model in youngsters may be an appropriate strategy to refer young smokers for early smoking cessation services. Therefore this study aims to promote smoking cessation by training secondary school students as anti-smoke ambassadors (ASAs) with increased knowledge, skills and self-efficacy on smoking cessation and AWARD model using service-learning model.MethodsA cluster randomized controlled trial will be conducted in 14 secondary schools in Hong Kong. Also, a hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation design with the Reach Effectiveness Adoption Implementation Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework will be adopted. For the intervention group, participants (n = 184) will attend a 3-hour training workshop, followed by hands-on sessions supervised by trained nursing students, then a 6-month smoker referral competition and an award presentation ceremony. The control group (n = 184) will only attend the 3-hour training workshop. The research assistant will contact participants at the start and the end of training program, and at 3, 6, and 12 months after the end of the training program by telephone to complete a set of questionnaires. Participating secondary schools, participating nursing students, ASAs, and responsible organizational staff will be randomly invited for a one-to-one semi-structured interview. The primary outcome will be the number of smokers who referred by secondary school students. Descriptive statistics, mixed between-within-subjects ANOVA, logistic regressions, and content analysis will be used.DiscussionThis study will bridge the gap in existing literature by determining the effectiveness and exploring facilitators and barriers in implementing our intervention with the use of the AWARD model and service-learning model in training young people to refer smokers to anti-smoke organizations in the real-world. This can enhance our community capacity and enable youngsters to take a proactive role to support smoking cessation.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05897346. Registered on 11 May 2023.

Introduction Cancer and its treatment affect children’s physical, psychological and social well-being throughout the disease trajectory. Spiritual well-being is a fundamental dimension of people’s overall health and is considered a source of strength to motivate patients to cope with and adapt to their disease. Appropriate spiritual interventions are important to mitigate the psychological impact of cancer on children, with an ultimate goal of improving their quality of life (QoL) throughout the treatment course. However, the overall effectiveness of spiritual interventions for paediatric patients with cancer remains unclear. This paper describes a protocol to systematically summarise the characteristics of studies related to existing spiritual interventions and synthesise their effectiveness on psychological outcomes and QoL among children with cancer.Methods and analysis Ten databases will be searched to identify appropriate literature: MEDLINE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, LILACS, OpenSIGLE, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, the Chinese Medical Current Contents and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure. All randomised controlled trials that meet our inclusion criteria will be included. The primary outcome will be QoL as evaluated by self-reported measures. The secondary outcomes will be self-reported or objectively measured psychological outcomes, including anxiety and depression. Review Manager V.5.3 will be used to synthesise the data, calculate treatment effects, perform any subgroup analyses and assess the risk of bias in included studies.Ethical and dissemination The results will be presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. As no individual data will be involved in this review, ethical approval is not required.

IntroductionAlcohol use disorder is a medical condition characterized by an impaired ability to control or stop alcohol use despite adverse health outcomes. Despite several studies that have analyzed the prevalence and determinants, their results have been equivocal, and the reasons for the differences in prevalence rates and determinants of AUD across nationalities are unknown. Hence, this study estimated the pooled prevalence of alcohol use disorder and its determinant among adults in East Asian countries.MethodsArticles were searched from PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and Scopus. All observational study designs that fulfilled the predefined criteria were included in the study. The findings were reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). The quality and heterogeneity of articles were assessed using the new castle-Ottawa scale (NOS) and I2, respectively. Additionally, publication bias was checked through funnel plot and Egger's regression test.ResultsA total of 14 articles with 93, 161 study participants were considered in the study. Of which 9 studies were included in the meta-analysis of the 1-year prevalence of alcohol use disorder, 6 in the lifetime, 9 in alcohol abuse, and 8 in alcohol dependency. Consequently, the overall pooled prevalence of one-year alcohol use disorder was 8.88% (95% CI: 6.32, 11.44), lifetime 13.41% (95%CI: 8.48, 18.34), alcohol abuse 5.4% (95% CI: 2.66, 8.13), and alcohol dependency 4.47% (95% CI: 2.66, 6.27). In the subgroup analysis by country, the highest 1-year and lifetime pooled prevalence of alcohol use disorder was observed in Korea at 9.78% (95% CI:4.40, 15.15) and 16.73% (95% CI: 15.31, 18.16), respectively. Besides, smoking (OR: 3.99; 95% CI: 1.65, 6.33) and male gender (OR: 5.9; 95% CI: 3.3, 8.51) were significant determinants of alcohol use disorder.ConclusionsThe magnitude of alcohol use disorder was high among adults in East Asian countries. Smoking and male gender were the key determinants of alcohol use disorders.

Introduction Poverty has a detrimental influence on psychological well-being of children. Existing evidence shows that positive psychology interventions are possible to mitigate such impact. Despite criticisms that positive psychology resembles a scientific Pollyannaism that promotes overly positivity, positive psychology is not the scientific Pollyannaism that denies the difficulties and emotions that people may experience. Whereas, positive psychology acknowledges the difficulties and emotions, alongside with building up human resilience, strength and growth to face adversity. This study examined the feasibility of implementing a positive psychology intervention among Hong Kong Chinese children living in poverty.Methods A feasibility randomised controlled trial will be conducted. A convenience sample of 120 children aged 13–17 years will be recruited from a community centre in Kwai Tsing district. Participants who are randomised into the experimental group will join a 1.5-hour workshop covering four positive psychology techniques: (1) gratitude visits/letters, (2) three good things, (3) you at your best and (4) using signature strengths. A booster intervention will be provided at 1 week. Control group participants will not receive any intervention. Assessments will be conducted at baseline and at 1-week, 1-month, 3-month and 6-month follow-ups.Analysis Descriptive statistics will be used to calculate the feasibility measures. Effect sizes on psychological outcomes (ie, self-esteem, depressive symptoms and quality of life) will be estimated by mixed between-within subjects analysis of variance using partial eta squared with poverty (yes, no) entering into the model as a factor.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval has been obtained from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Institutional Review Broad. We will obtain parental consent as our subjects are below 18 years old. Findings from this study will be disseminated via international publications and conferences.Trial registration number NCT04875507.
