Abstract

A comparative vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy study conducted at ISOLDE-CERN of the radiative decay of the $^{229m}$Th nuclear clock isomer embedded in different host materials is reported. The ratio of the number of radiative decay photons and the number of $^{229m}$Th embedded are determined for single crystalline CaF$_2$, MgF$_2$, LiSrAlF$_6$, AlN, and amorphous SiO$_2$. For the latter two materials, no radiative decay signal was observed and an upper limit of the ratio is reported. The radiative decay wavelength was determined in LiSrAlF$_6$ and CaF$_2$, reducing its uncertainty by a factor of 2.5 relative to our previous measurement. This value is in agreement with the recently reported improved values from laser excitation.

Abstract

Isomers close to doubly-magic $^{78}_{28}$Ni$_{50}$ provide essential information on the shell evolution and shape coexistence near the ${Z=28}$ and ${N=50}$ double shell closure. We report the excitation energy measurement of the $1/2^{+}$ isomer in $^{79}_{30}$Zn$_{49}$ through independent high-precision mass measurements with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap and with the ISOLTRAP Multi-Reflection Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer. We unambiguously place the $1/2^{+}$ isomer at 942(10) keV, slightly below the $5/2^+$ state at 983(3) keV. With the use of state-of-the-art shell-model diagonalizations, complemented with Discrete Non Orthogonal shell-model calculations which are used here the first time to interpret shape coexistence, we find low-lying deformed intruder states, similar to other ${N=49}$ isotones. The $1/2^{+}$ isomer is interpreted as the band-head of a low-lying deformed structure akin to a predicted low-lying deformed band in $^{80}$Zn, and points to shape coexistence in $^{79,80}$Zn similar to the one observed in $^{78}$Ni. The results make a strong case for confirming the claim of shape coexistence in this key region of the nuclear chart., Comment: 10 pages, three figures, two tables. Accepted to Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract

Accelerator-based techniques are one of the leading ways to produce radioactive nuclei. In this work, the Isotope Separation On-Line method was employed at the CERN-ISOLDE facility to produce neptunium and plutonium from a uranium carbide target material using 1.4-GeV protons. Neptunium and plutonium were laser-ionized and extracted as 30-keV ion beams. A Multi-Reflection Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer was used for ion identification by means of time-of-flight measurements as well as for isobaric separation. Isotope shifts were investigated for the 395.6-nm ground state transition in $^{236,237,239}$Np and the 413.4-nm ground state transition in $^{236,239,240}$Pu. Rates of $^{235-241}$Np and $^{234-241}$Pu ions were measured and compared with predictions of in-target production mechanisms simulated with GEANT4 and FLUKA to elucidate the processes by which these nuclei, which contain more protons than the target nucleus, are formed. $^{241}$Pu is the heaviest nuclide produced and identified at a proton-accelerator-driven facility to date. We report the availability of neptunium and plutonium as two additional elements at CERN-ISOLDE and discuss the limit of accelerator-based isotope production at high-energy proton accelerator facilities for nuclides in the actinide region., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

The use of radioactive molecules for fundamental physics research is a developing interdisciplinary field limited dominantly by their scarce availability. In this work, radioactive molecular ion beams containing actinide nuclei extracted from uranium carbide targets are produced via the Isotope Separation On-Line technique at the CERN-ISOLDE facility. Two methods of molecular beam production are studied: extraction of molecular ion beams from the ion source, and formation of molecular ions from the mass-separated ion beam in a gas-filled radio-frequency quadrupole ion trap. Ion currents of U$^+$, UO$_{1-3}^+$, UC$_{1-3}^+$, UF$_{1-4}^+$, UF$_{1,2}$O$_{1,2}^+$ are reported. Metastable tantalum and uranium fluoride molecular ions are identified. Formation of UO$_{1-3}^+$, U(OH)$_{1-3}^+$, UC$_{1-3}^+$, UF$_{1,2}$O$_{1,2}^+$ from mass-separated beams of U$^+$, UF$_{1,2}^+$ with residual gas is observed in the ion trap. Abstract

Neutron capture cross-section measurements are fundamental in the study of astrophysical phenomena, such as the slow neutron capture (s-) process of nucleosynthesis operating in red-giant and massive stars. However, neutron capture measurements via the time-of-flight (TOF) technique on key $s$-process nuclei are often challenging. Difficulties arise from the limited mass ($\sim$mg) available and the high sample-related background in the case of the unstable $s$-process branching points. Measurements on neutron magic nuclei, that act as $s$-process bottlenecks, are affected by low (n,$\gamma$) cross sections and a dominant neutron scattering background. Overcoming these experimental challenges requires the combination of facilities with high instantaneous flux, such as n\_TOF-EAR2, with detection systems with an enhanced detection sensitivity and high counting rate capabilities. This contribution reviews some of the latest detector developments in detection systems for (n,$\gamma$) measurements at n\_TOF, such as i-TED, an innovative detection system which exploits the Compton imaging technique to reduce the dominant neutron scattering background and s-TED, a highly segmented total energy detector intended for high flux facilities. The discussion will be illustrated with results of the first measurement of key the $s$-process branching-point reaction $^{79}$Se(n,$\gamma$)., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures (8 panels). Abstract

One of the crucial ingredients for the improvement of stellar models is the accurate knowledge of neutron capture cross-sections for the different isotopes involved in the $s$-,$r$- and $i$- processes. These measurements can shed light on existing discrepancies between observed and predicted isotopic abundances and help to constrain the physical conditions where these reactions take place along different stages of stellar evolution.In the particular case of the radioactive $^{94}$Nb, the $^{94}$Nb($n$,$\gamma$) cross-section could play a role in the determination of the $s$-process production of $^{94}$Mo in AGB stars, which presently cannot be reproduced by state-of-the-art stellar models. There are no previous $^{94}$Nb($n$,$\gamma$) experimental data for the resolved and unresolved resonance regions mainly due to the difficulties in producing high-quality samples and also due to limitations in conventional detection systems commonly used in time-of-flight experiments.Motivated by this situation, a first measurement of the $^{94}$Nb($n$,$\gamma$) reaction was carried out at CERN n\_TOF, thereby exploiting the high luminosity of the EAR2 area in combination with a new detection system of small-volume C6D6-detectors and a high quality $^{94}$Nb-sample. The latter was based on hyper-pure $^{93}$Nb material activated at the high-flux reactor of ILL-Grenoble. An innovative ring-configuration detection system in close geometry around the capture sample allowed us to significantly enhance the signal-to-background ratio. This set-up was supplemented with two conventional C$_{6}$D$_{6}$ detectors and a high-resolution LaCl$_{3}$(Ce)-detector, which will be employed for addressing reliably systematic effects and uncertainties.At the current status of the data analysis, 18 resonance in $^{94}$Nb+$n$ have been observed for the first time in the neutron energy range from thermal up to 10 keV., Comment: NPA-X conference proceeding

Abstract

This article presents a few selected developments and future ideas related to the measurement of $(n,\gamma)$ data of astrophysical interest at CERN n_TOF. The MC-aided analysis methodology for the use of low-efficiency radiation detectors in time-of-flight neutron-capture measurements is discussed, with particular emphasis on the systematic accuracy. Several recent instrumental advances are also presented, such as the development of total-energy detectors with $\gamma$-ray imaging capability for background suppression, and the development of an array of small-volume organic scintillators aimed at exploiting the high instantaneous neutron-flux of EAR2. Finally, astrophysics prospects related to the intermediate $i$ neutron-capture process of nucleosynthesis are discussed in the context of the new NEAR activation area., Comment: preprint submitted to the European Physical Journal A, 11 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The radioactive nuclide 225Ac is one of the few promising candidates for cancer treatment by targeted- α -therapy, but worldwide production of 225Ac faces significant limitations. In this work, the Isotope Separation On-Line method was used to produce actinium by irradiating targets made of uranium carbide and thorium carbide with 1.4-GeV protons. Actinium fluoride molecules were formed, ionized through electron impact, then extracted and mass-separated as a beam of molecular ions. The composition of the mass-selected ion beam was verified using time-of-flight mass spectrometry, α - and γ -ray decay spectrometry. Extracted quantities of 225 Ac 19 F 2 + particles per μ C of incident protons were 3.9 (3) × 10 7 from a uranium carbide target and 4.3 (4) × 10 7 for a thorium carbide target. Using a magnetic mass separator, the long-lived contamination 227 Ac is suppressed to < 5.47 × 10 - 7 (95% confidence interval) with respect to 225Ac by activity. Abstract

Excited states in 193Os were populated using a 192Os⁢( th., )⁢193Os thermal neutron capture reaction, with neutrons provided by the high-flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. Lifetimes of low-spin excited states were measured using the generalized centroid difference method. A total of eight mean lifetimes of low-lying excited states were determined for the first time, and limits for the lifetimes of three further excited states were established. Additionally, − angular correlations were analyzed to assign spins to previously known excited states up to 1 MeV, and extract multipole mixing ratios for several transitions. The new spectroscopic information is compared to calculations in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model, based on the nuclear density functional theory, to investigate the prolate-to-oblate shape phase transition, predicted to occur in the neutron rich ≈190 region.

Abstract

Asymptotic giant branch stars are responsible for the production of most of the heavy isotopes beyond Sr observed in the solar system. Among them, isotopes shielded from the ¿-process contribution by their stable isobars are defined as ¿-only nuclei. For a long time the abundance of 204Pb, the heaviest ¿-only isotope, has been a topic of debate because state-of-the-art stellar models appeared to systematically underestimate its solar abundance. Besides the impact of uncertainties from stellar models and galactic chemical evolution simulations, this discrepancy was further obscured by rather divergent theoretical estimates for the neutron capture cross section of its radioactive precursor in the neutron-capture flow, 204Tl (¿1/2=3.78¿¿yr), and by the lack of experimental data on this reaction. We present the first ever neutron capture measurement on 204Tl, conducted at the CERN neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF, employing a sample of only 9 mg of 204Tl produced at the Institute Laue Langevin high flux reactor. By complementing our new results with semiempirical calculations we obtained, at the ¿-process temperatures of ¿¿¿˜8¿¿keV and ¿¿¿˜30¿¿keV, Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) of 580(168) mb and 260(90) mb, respectively. These figures are about 3% lower and 20% higher than the corresponding values widely used in astrophysical calculations, which were based only on theoretical calculations. By using the new 204Tl MACS, the uncertainty arising from the 204Tl¿(n,¿) cross section on the ¿-process abundance of 204Pb has been reduced from ~30% down to +8%/-6%, and the ¿-process calculations are in agreement with the latest solar system abundance of 204Pb reported by K. Abstract

The thermodynamical conditions and the neutron density produced in a laser-induced implosion of a deuterium-tritium (DT) filled capsule at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) are the closest laboratory analog of stellar conditions. We plan to investigate neutron-induced reactions on 40Ar, namely the 40Ar(n, 2n)39Ar(t1/2 =268 y), the 40Ar(n, γ)41Ar(110 min) and the potential rapid two-neutron capture reaction 40Ar(2n, γ)42Ar(33 y) in an Ar-loaded DT capsule. The chemical inertness of noble gas Ar enables reliable collection of the reaction products.

Abstract

The cross-section of the thermal neutron capture 41Ar(n,γ)42Ar(t1/2=32.9 y) reaction was measured by irradiating a 40Ar sample at the high-flux reactor of Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) Grenoble, France. The signature of the two-neutron capture has been observed by measuring the growth curve and identifying the 1524.6 keV γ-lines of the shorter-lived 42K(12.4 h) β− daughter of 42Ar. Our preliminary value of the 41Ar(n,γ)42Ar thermal cross section is 240(80) mb at 25.3 meV. For the first time, direct counting of 42Ar was performed using the ultra-high sensitivity technique of noble gas accelerator mass spectrometry (NOGAMS) at Argonne National Laboratory, USA.

Abstract

Radiative neutron-capture cross sections are of pivotal importance in many fields such as nucle-osynthesis studies or innovative reactor technologies. A large number of isotopes have been measured with high accuracy, but there are still a large number of relevant isotopes whose cross sections could not be experimentally determined yet, at least with sufficient accuracy and completeness, owing to limitations in detection techniques, sample production methods or in the facilities themselves. In the context of the HYMNS (High-sensitivitY Measurements of key stellar Nucleo-Synthesis reactions) project over the last six years we have developed a novel detection technique aimed at background suppression in radiative neutron-capture time-of-flight measurements. This new technique utilizes a complex detection set-up based on position-sensitive radiation-detectors deployed in a Compton-camera array configuration. The latter enables to implement gamma-ray imaging techniques, which help to disentangle true capture events arising from the sample under study and contaminant background events from the surroundings. A summary on the main developments is given in this contribution together with an update on recent experiments at CERN n_TOF and an outlook on future steps.

Abstract

The study of nuclear fission yields has a major impact on the characterization and understanding of the fission process and is mandatory for reactor applications. In the framework of a collaboration between the CEA, the LPSC and the ILL, a program of actinide fission yield measurements has been ongoing for several years at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer. However, the measurement of very low fission yields in the symmetry region and the heavy wing of the distributions is difficult to achieve due to the strong contamination by other masses with much higher yields and requires the development of a new experimental setup. This paper will first present the results of a new absolute measurement of the 235U(nth,f) mass yields using an ionization chamber placed at the exit of the spectrometer. Although very well documented in the literature, these yields show uncertainties lying from 3% to 10% with large discrepancies between libraries and a lack of correlation matrices. New experimental data obtained at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer will be detailed, along with the measurement method and the production of the experimental covariance matrix. The second part will show the development of a Time of Flight (ToF) line in order to improve the background rejection in the mass yield measurements. In the symmetry region, the precision of the measurement is limited by the background estimation due to the charge exchanges with the residual gas of the separator. We plan to analyze the events using a triple coincidence (∆E x E) x ToF, whereas today only (∆E x E) selection is available. The new ToF line is built using Si3N4 foils and secondary electron detectors (SED) for the start and stop detectors. We will present the choices made for the SED technology along with the progress achieved on the ToF line characterization.

Abstract

We report on a new measurement of the half-life of 42Ar by following its decay over a time period of more than 13 years using γ-ray spectrometry. The obtained value of (39.5 ± 3.6) y confirms the only other, previously measured value of (33 ± 2) y. However, since partial outgassing of the accumulated Ar from the sample cannot be excluded, this value should be understood as a lower limit. The sample has now been stored in a gas-tight quartz ampoule to enable further measurements excluding the outgas effect in order to confirm our finding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

BOLD-100 (formerly IT-139, KP1339), a well-established chemotherapeutic agent, is currently being investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of gastric, pancreatic, colorectal, and bile duct cancer. Despite numerous studies, the exact mode of action is still the subject of discussions. Radiolabeled BOLD-100 could be a powerful tool to clarify pharmacokinetic pathways of the compound and to predict therapy responses in patients using nuclear molecular imaging prior to the therapy. In this study, the radiosyntheses of carrier-added (c.a.) [97/103Ru]BOLD-100 were performed with the two ruthenium isotopes ruthenium-103 (103Ru; β−, γ) and ruthenium-97 (97Ru; EC, γ), of which in particular the latter isotope is suitable for imaging by single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). To identify the best tumor-to-background ratio for diagnostic imaging, biodistribution studies were performed with two different injected doses of c.a. [103Ru]BOLD-100 (3 and 30 mg kg−1) in Balb/c mice bearing CT26 allografts over a time period of 72 h. Additionally, ex vivo autoradiography of the tumors (24 h p.i.) was conducted. Our results indicate that the higher injected dose (30 mg kg−1) leads to more unspecific accumulation of the compound in non-targeted tissue, which is likely due to an overload of the albumin transport system. It was also shown that lower amounts of injected c.a. [103Ru]BOLD-100 resulted in a relatively higher tumor uptake and, therefore, a better tumor-to-background ratio, which are encouraging results for future imaging studies using c.a. [97Ru]BOLD-100. Abstract

The ≈100 mass region is of special interest due to a rapid shape transition, observed by going from neutron number 58 to 60, especially pronounced in the Zr isotopes, where 98Zr is weakly and 100Zr is strongly deformed. To further examine this intricate phenomenon, in this work lifetimes of low-lying excited states in the nuclei 99Zr and 99Nb were determined using fast-timing techniques and an experimental setup consisting of four LaBr3⁢(Ce) detectors. Neutron rich =99 fragments were produced in neutron induced fission and separated by the spectrometer LOHENGRIN at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. Experimental values are compared to two different calculations in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model and discussed in the context of shape coexistence.

Abstract

The thermodynamical conditions of plasma density, temperature, pressure and the neutron density produced in a laser-induced implosion of a deuterium-tritium (DT) filled capsule at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) are the closest laboratory analog of stellar conditions. We plan to investigate neutron-induced reactions on 40Ar, namely the 40Ar(n, 2n)39Ar(t1/2 =268 y), the 40Ar(n,gamma)41Ar(110 min) and the potential rapid two-neutron capture reaction 40Ar(2n,gamma)42Ar(33 y) in the same implosion on an Ar-loaded DT capsule. The chemical inertness of noble gas Ar enables reliable collection of the reaction products. We describe here the technique of Noble-Gas Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NOGAMS) to be used for ultra-sensitive detection of the long-lived 39Ar and 42Ar at Argonne National Laboratory. A 42Ar(33 y) sample was produced via the slow two-neutron capture reaction 40Ar(2n, gamma)42Ar in a high thermal-neutron flux irradiation. 39Ar and for the first time 42Ar atoms were directly detected in the abundance range 10^-12 -- 10^-13 . The present sensitivity of 42Ar detection is of the order of 104 atoms.
