The digital transformation in agriculture introduces new challenges in terms of data, knowledge and technology adoption due to critical interoperability issues, and also challenges regarding the identification of the most suitable data sources to be exploited and the information models that must be used. DEMETER (Building an Interoperable, Data-Driven, Innovative and Sustainable European Agri-Food Sector) addresses these challenges by providing an overarching solution that integrates various heterogeneous hardware and software resources (e.g., devices, networks, platforms) and enables the seamless sharing of data and knowledge throughout the agri-food chain. This paper introduces the main concepts of DEMETER and its reference architecture to address the data sharing and interoperability needs of farmers, which is validated via two rounds of 20 large-scale pilots along the DEMETER lifecycle. This paper elaborates on the two pilots carried out in region of Murcia in Spain, which target the arable crops sector and demonstrate the benefits of the deployed DEMETER reference architecture.

As prices on renewable energy electricity generation and storage technologies decrease, previous standard home energy end-users are also becoming producers (prosumers). Together with the increase of Smart Home automation and the need to manage the energy-related interaction between home energy consumers and Smart Grid through different Demand Response approaches, home energy management becomes a complex and multi-faceted problem, calling for an extensible, interoperable and secure solution. This work proposes a modular architecture for building a Smart Home Energy Management System, integrable with existing Home Automation Systems, that considers the use of standard interfaces for data communication, the implementation of security measures for the integration of the different components, as well as the use of semantic web technologies to integrate knowledge and build on it. Our proposal is finally validated through implementation in one real smart home test-bed, evaluating the system from a functional standpoint to demonstrate its ability to support our goals.

During the summer of 2018, there was high incidence of fruit rots of cantaloupe melons (Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis) in Murcia province, south-eastern Spain. The fruits showed development of whitish mycelium and pulp softening. Morphological and molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1-α) and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase (RPB2) genes confirmed Fusarium annulatum as the causal agent of the disease. A phylogenetic study indicated that F. annulatum is in the Fusarium fujikuroi species complex (FFSC). Pathogenicity of the isolate was determined on healthy fruit verifying Koch’s postulates. The first symptoms of fruit rot were observed 3 d after inoculations at 28ºC. Fruit infections only occurred in artificially wounded melons, and F. annulatum was re-isolated from the wounds. This disease appeared after fruit harvesting, and could generate substantial economic losses mainly in fruit destined for foreign markets due to long transportation times. This is the first report of melon fruit rot caused by F. annulatum in Spain.

Academic institutions dedicate a substantial effort to ensure the academic success of their students. At the course level, teachers recommend learning paths (RLPs) for students to guarantee the achievement of their learning outcomes. In terms of performance, these kinds of approaches are deemed more effective than others based uniquely on performing a collection of independent activities. However, there is neither systematic means to validate if following the learning path (LP) is effective, nor to assess whether and to what extent students adhere to these recommendations. This article introduces a novel technique for modeling recommended LPs, including not only an evaluation of path utility, but also a quantitative measure of student adherence thereto using process mining, and more precisely, log skeletons. Following an event abstraction process regarding real student-recorded activity, a scoping process is employed to retain the trajectories that adhere to the prescribed LP. The method based on process mining is translated into practice by considering an online university mathematics course. Results confirm the applicability of the method and, in this case, reveal that adhering to the suggested path correlates positively with final grades. Few students strictly follow the prescribed LP, although the vast majority support it. The method can be easily applied to overcome several challenges associated with enhancing academic performance from the learning analytics perspective.

El presente estudio tiene como propósito general medir la relevancia del enfoque por competencias en las prácticas de enseñanza en la formación técnico profesional en la República Dominicana. Se centra en dos instituciones de educación técnico profesional: el Instituto Técnico Superior Comunitario (ITSC) y el Instituto Nacional de Formación Técnico Profesional (Infotep). Los participantes del estudio fueron integrantes del estudiantado y del equipo docente de ambos institutos. Los resultados muestran que tanto el ITSC como el Infotep tienen una alta valoración en el rango de indicadores medidos dentro de la categoría de aspectos pedagógicos.

Today, it is difficult to have a high-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) device due to the high cost of its acquisition and maintenance. These high-end machines require significant space and specialist personnel for operation and offer exceptional quality in the acquisition, processing, and other advanced functions associated with detected signals. However, alternative devices are low-field nuclear magnetic resonance devices. They benefit from the elimination of high-tech components that generate static magnetic fields and advanced instruments. Instead, they used magnetic fields induced by ordinary conductors. Another category of spectrometers uses the Earth’s magnetic field, which is simple and economical but limited in use. These devices are called Earth-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (EFNMR) devices. This device is ideal for educational purposes, especially for engineers and those who study nuclear magnetic resonance, such as chemistry or other experimental sciences. Students can observe their internal workings and conduct experiments that complement their education without worrying about damaging equipment. This article provides a detailed explanation of the design and construction of electrical technology devices for the excitation of atomic spin resonance using Earth’s magnetic fields. It covers all necessary stages, from research to analysis, including simulation, assembly, construction of each component, and the development of comprehensive software for spectrometer control.

La investigación en psicología ha mostrado que tendemos a dar mayor veracidad a aquella información que recibimos de manera repetida y reiterada. Este sesgo cognitivo, denominado efecto de ilusión de verdad o de verdad ilusoria, se basa en la mayor facilidad que tenemos los seres humanos para procesar cognitivamente la información que nos resulta familiar. En este artículo se describe este sesgo cognitivo y su relación con la propagación de noticias falsas en determinados contextos y acontecimientos sociohistóricos, como instrumento para confundir y manipular a la opinión pública. Entre estos acontecimientos podemos citar las mentiras difundidas por la Administración Bush en 2003 en torno a la supuesta posesión de armas de destrucción masiva por parte de Irak; el uso indiscriminado de fakes por el expresidente de los Estados Unidos, Donald Trump; la campaña de distribución de información falsa por parte del independentismo catalán; y la propagación incontrolada de fakes y bulos en nuestro país durante la pandemia de COVID-19

High dropout rates constitute a major concern for higher education institutions, due to their economic and academic impact. The problem is particularly relevant for institutions offering online courses, where withdrawal ratios are reported to be higher. Both the impact and these high rates motivate the implementation of interventions oriented to reduce course withdrawal and overall institutional dropout. In this paper, we address the identification of populations of learners at risk of withdrawing from higher education online courses. This identification is oriented to design interventions and is carried out using survival analysis. We demonstrate that the method’s longitudinal approach is particularly suited for this purpose and provides a clear view of risk differences among learner populations. Additionally, the method quantifies the impact of underlying factors, either alone or in combination. Our practical implementation used an open dataset provided by The Open University. It includes data from more than 30,000 students enrolled in different courses. We conclude that low-income students and those who report a disability comprise risk groups and are thus feasible intervention targets. The survival curves also reveal differences among courses and show the detrimental effect of early dropout on low-income students, worsened throughout the course for disabled students. Intervention strategies are proposed as a result of these findings. Extending the entire refund period and giving greater academic support to students who report disability are two proposed strategies for reducing course withdrawal.

Este artículo aborda el concepto de fallo de inteligencia, sus rasgos y sus principales causas a partir de una perspectiva psicosocial. Desde este punto de vista, se plantea que los errores son inherentes a toda actividad humana y a la naturaleza de la inteligencia, de modo que su ocurrencia es normal e inevitable en sistemas complejos, como lo son los servicios, las agencias y las comunidades de inteligencia. Con todo, se argumenta que, si bien no se pueden evitar, es posible minimizar al máximo su ocurrencia y mitigar el impacto negativo que podrían tener. En ese sentido, se plantean algunas medidas y acciones que pueden contribuir a ese fin.

El yacimiento arqueológico de Qubbet el-Hawa alberga una de las mayores necrópolis del sur de Egipto. En ella se enterraron los altos dignatarios y los nobles que gobernaron la provincia más meridional de Egipto desde el Reino Antiguo (al menos la VI dinastía) hasta el Reino Medio (Dinastía XII). Se han llegado a documentar más de 70 hipogeos, alguno de los cuales aún siguen sin ser investigados en profundidad. El trabajo que aquí presentamos trata de comprender uno de los complejos funerarios más grandes y antiguos de la necrópolis, compuesto por la tumba conocida como QH34h, que perteneció al gobernador Khunes y las tumbas anexas de sus familiares. Fue construido hacia el final del reinado de Pepy II (2216-2153 a. C.), sufrió una serie de transformaciones arquitectónicas a lo largo de su historia, derrumbes importantes y finalmente fue elegido por una comunidad monástica para establecer en él una iglesia cristiana en el siglo VI. El objetivo principal de este artículo es analizar cómo un espacio sagrado cambió a lo largo del tiempo y los diferentes espacios arquitectónicos fueron usados en diferentes propósitos.

La difusión de fake news y bulos durante la pandemia de COVID-19 se ha convertido en una grave amenaza para la salud de los ciudadanos que, en momentos de crisis sanitaria como el actual, necesitan disponer de información veraz y fiable. Ello justifica la necesidad de adoptar determinadas medidas al objeto de prevenir y combatir la difusión de información falsa. En este contexto de desinformación, el gobierno español ha planteado la posibilidad de monitorizar y penalizar la difusión de fakes y bulos. Este artículo tiene como objetivo realizar un análisis crítico de la penalización como medida para combatir la difusión de fakes news y bulos durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Desde esta perspectiva, y como estrategia alternativa a la penalización se destaca la importancia de la alfabetización informacional como medio de formar consumidores de noticias críticos, bien informados y formados en el empleo de herramientas para verificar información y prevenir la propagación de noticias falsas. Penalizar la elaboración y difusión de noticias falsas es una medida polémica que entraña numerosos problemas desde un punto de vista ético, legal y, sobre todo, democrático. En la situación actual de crisis sanitaria resulta más eficaz concienciar a los ciudadanos sobre los riesgos que suponen las falsas noticias, enseñándoles a identificarlas y a evitar su difusión. Como estrategia para combatir la difusión de fakes y bulos, el fomento de la higiene informativa y la alfabetización informacional de la sociedad requieren de la participación y colaboración activa de los gobiernos, medios de comunicación y, sobre todo, de los ciudadanos.

Permeability and inertial factor are the most relevant variables in the Forchheimer equation. They are important to estimate pressure drop when a fluid flow is passing through a porous media. However, in the insect-proof screens field, the existing models to date are still providing a poor predictive accuracy, in part due to they are based on 2D porosity of screens. This work provides novel models for permeability and inertial factor, which are developed from experimental data of insect-proof screens in a wind tunnel and the analytical estimation of 3D porosity. Instead of fitting models directly on observed training data values of permeability and inertial factor, we propose to focus the modelling efforts on finding models dependent on the 3D porosity through the constants in the pressure drop of Forchheimer equation. Since two screens can have the same 2D porosity but different 3D porosity, this makes also models more reliable. The combination of all these aspects has led to parametric models that overcome by far predictions by previous models in the literature.

The deployment of 5G around the world continues to progress at a rapid pace, especially in North America and Asia. Its advantages and efficiency as a data transmission network have been widely demonstrated in different fields such as agriculture, education, health, and surveillance. However, this process does not have the same dynamics in Latin America, specifically in Colombia. The country is currently implementing actions aimed at facilitating the deployment of this technology in the short term, including pilot tests for the use of the radio spectrum, spectrum auctions, the planning of future auctions, and the review of spectrum caps. The results of this review allow us to conclude that despite the forecasts and the intentions of the Colombian government and mobile communication service operators, 5G in standalone mode will not be commercially available in Colombia before the end of 2023. The main failures in its deployment are related to the lack of available spectrum to support the ultrahigh-reliability and low-latency, enhanced mobile broadband, and massive machine-type communications scenarios, as well as the delay in the auction processes for its assignment.

The production of crops in greenhouses will ensure the demand for food for the world’s population in the coming decades. Precision agriculture is an important tool for this purpose, supported among other things, by the technology of wireless sensor networks (WSN) in the monitoring of agronomic parameters. Therefore, prior planning of the deployment of WSN nodes is relevant because their coverage decreases when the radio waves are attenuated by the foliage of the plantation. In that sense, the method proposed in this study applies Deep Learning to develop an empirical model of radio wave attenuation when it crosses vegetation that includes height and distance between the transceivers of the WSN nodes. The model quality is expressed via the parameters cross-validation, R2 of 0.966, while its generalized error is 0.920 verifying the reliability of the empirical model.

There is a need to integrate advancements in biomedical, information, and communication technologies with care processes within the framework of the inpatient safety program to support effective risk management of adverse events occurring in the hospital environment and to improve inpatient safety. In this respect, this work presents the development of a software platform using the Scrum methodology and the integrated technology of the Internet of Things for monitoring and managing inpatient safety. A modular solution is developed under a hexagonal architecture, using PHP as the backend language through the Laravel framework. A MySQL database was used for the data layer, and Vue.js was used for the user interface. This work implemented an RFID-based nurse call system using Internet of Things (IoT) concepts. The system enables nurses to respond to each inpatient within a given time limit and without the inpatient or a family member having to approach the nursing station. The system also provides reports and indicators that help evaluate the quality of inpatient care and helps to take measures to improve inpatient safety during care. In addition, diet management is integrated to reduce the occurrence of adverse events. A LoRa and Wi-Fi-based IoT network was implemented using a LoRa transceiver and the ESP32 MCU, chosen for its low power consumption, low cost, and wide availability. Bidirectional communication between hardware and software is handled through an MQTT Broker. The system integrates temperature and humidity sensors and smoke sensors, among others.

The growing global demand for food and the environmental impact caused by agriculture have made this activity increasingly dependent on electronics, information technology, and telecommunications technologies. In Colombia, agriculture is of great importance not only as a commercial activity, but also as a source of food and employment. However, the concept of smart agriculture has not been widely applied in this country, resulting in the high production of various types of crops due to the planting of large areas of land, rather than optimization of the processes involved in the activity. Due to its technical characteristics and the radio spectrum considered in its deployment, 5G can be seen as one of the technologies that could generate the greatest benefits for the Colombian agricultural sector, especially in the most remote rural areas, which currently lack mobile network coverage. This article provides an overview of the current 5G technology landscape in Colombia and presents examples of possible 5G/IoT applications that could be developed in Colombian fields. The results show that 5G could facilitate the implementation of the smart farm in Colombia, improving current production and efficiency. It is useful when designing 5G implementation plans and strategies, since it categorizes crops by regions and products. This is based on budget availability, population density, and regional development plans, among others.
