Helium is a globally scarce strategic resource that is relevant to national economies and the development of high-tech industries, and China primarily depends on imported helium for its industrial applications. Therefore, there is an urgent demand for clarifying helium formation and enrichment patterns, searching for helium-rich fields, and realizing China's helium resource inventory and development potential. This article analyzes the reservoir characteristics and accumulation conditions of typical helium-rich fields in China, and clarifying the origin and source of helium as well as the main controlling factors of helium enrichment. It was recognized that helium in natural gas in China mainly comes from crustal sources. Relatively shallow buried ancient U–Th-rich granite basement or intrusion, large and stable ancient uplift or submarine formed in the early period, good overburden of huge thick paste-salt rock or mudstone cover, and channels connecting the basement and reservoir, were the main controlling factors of helium enrichment. Four types of helium-rich gas reservoirs, namely helium-rich conventional gas, helium-rich shale gas, helium-rich non-hydrocarbon gas, and helium-rich water-soluble gas, have been modeled and predicted to be helium-rich favorable exploration areas. Based on this analysis, the prospect of helium resource development in China has been analyzed. It was proposed that the exploration of helium-rich fields and the comprehensive development and utilization of medium- and low-abundance helium resources are important ways to increase the domestic helium production in China in the future.

Grazing has been shown to impact the soil environment and microbial necromass carbon (MNC), which in turn regulates soil organic carbon (SOC). However, the carbon sequestration potential of fungi and bacteria under different stocking rates remains unclear, limiting our understanding of soil carbon sequestration in grazing management. In 2004, we established grazing experiments in the desert steppe of northern China with four stocking rates. Our findings indicate that MNC decreased under moderate and heavy grazing, while light grazing did not significantly differ from no grazing. Notably, the reduction in fungal necromass carbon, rather than bacterial necromass carbon, was primarily responsible for the decreased contribution of MNC to SOC. This difference is attributed to the varying effects of sheep grazing on fungal and bacterial community characteristics, including richness, diversity, and composition. Thus, to accurately predict carbon dynamics in grassland ecosystems, it is essential to consider that the ecological impacts and carbon sequestration potential of microbial communities may vary with different grazing management practices.

AbstractTragopogon dubius Scopoli is native to Europe and western Asia and is considered an invasive plant in China. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of T. dubius was obtained using high-throughput next-generation sequencing technology. The whole chloroplast genome was 153,017 bp long with a GC content of 38% and comprised 130 genes (86 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes). Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated chloroplast protein-coding sequences showed that T. dubius is most closely related to Tragopogon pratensis. This study provides valuable genetic data for further phylogenetic analysis and molecular identification of species in the genus Tragopogon.

Ecological corridors, as a key component of ecological networks (EN), can strengthen linkages between ecological sources and effectively prevent further fragmentation and loss of regional habitats. Understanding the structure of ecological corridors and exploring their resilience in different scenarios can facilitate the understanding on the flows of energy and materials between ecological sources that can contribute to landscape conservation and restoration. In this study, the agro-pastoral ecotone of the North Yinshan Mountain was used as an example to conduct the landscape EN analysis with corridors as the focus. Random attack, overgrazing and urban sprawl, incremental optimization, and arterial corridors conservation scenarios were constructed. Network cascade failure simulations are introduced to explore the stability of EN under four scenarios. Among them, 12 new ecological corridors were optimized at 9 nodes, and 158 arterial corridors connected the 159 ecological sources to form the backbone of the EN. Both the arterial corridors conservation scheme and the optimization scheme of additional edges play important roles in maintaining the resilience of the EN. This provides scientific decisions for the categorization and conservation of ecological corridors to ensure the ecological integrity of functional landscapes.

Bidens pilosa is recognized as one of the major invasive plants in China. Its invasion has been associated with significant losses in agriculture, forestry, husbandry, and biodiversity. Soil ecosystems play an important role in alien plant invasion. Microorganisms within the soil act as intermediaries between plants and soil ecological functions, playing a role in regulating soil enzyme activities and nutrient dynamics. Understanding the interactions between invasive plants, soil microorganisms, and soil ecological processes is vital for managing and mitigating the impacts of invasive species on the environment. In this study, we conducted a systematic analysis focusing on B. pilosa and Setaria viridis, a common native companion plant in the invaded area. To simulate the invasion process of B. pilosa, we constructed homogeneous plots consisting of B. pilosa and S. viridis grown separately as monocultures, as well as in mixtures. The rhizosphere and bulk soils were collected from the alien plant B. pilosa and the native plant S. viridis. In order to focus on the soil ecological functional mechanisms that contribute to the successful invasion of B. pilosa, we analyzed the effects of B. pilosa on the composition of soil microbial communities and soil ecological functions. The results showed that the biomass of B. pilosa increased by 27.51% and that of S. viridis was significantly reduced by 66.56%. The organic matter contents in the bulk and rhizosphere soils of B. pilosa were approximately 1.30 times those in the native plant soils. The TN and NO3– contents in the rhizosphere soil of B. pilosa were 1.30 to 2.71 times those in the native plant soils. The activities of acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, and urease in the rhizosphere soil of B. pilosa were 1.98–2.25 times higher than in the native plant soils. Using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, we found that B. pilosa altered the composition of the soil microbial community. Specifically, many genera in Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria were enriched in B. pilosa soils. Further correlation analyses verified that these genera had significantly positive relationships with soil nutrients and enzyme activities. Plant biomass, soil pH, and the contents of organic matter, TN, NO3–, TP, AP, TK, and AK were the main factors affecting soil microbial communities. This study showed that the invasion of B. pilosa led to significant alterations in the composition of the soil microbial communities. These changes were closely linked to modifications in plant traits as well as soil physical and chemical properties. Some microbial species related to C, N and P cycling were enriched in the soil invaded by B. pilosa. These findings provide additional support for the hypothesis of soil-microbe feedback in the successful invasion of alien plants. They also offer insights into the ecological mechanism by which soil microbes contribute to the successful invasion of B. pilosa. Overall, our research contributes to a better understanding of the complex interactions between invasive plants, soil microbial communities, and ecosystem dynamics.

IntroductionAlthough it is widely acknowledged that biodiversity maintains plant community assembly processes, exploring the patterns and drivers of beta-diversity (β-diversity; species variation among local plant communities) has received much less attention compared to alpha-diversity (α-diversity; species variation within a local plant community). Here, we aim to examine the patterns and spatial–environmental drivers of taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity, and their components such as species turnover and nestedness, in large-scale Leymus chinensis grassland communities.MethodsWe collected plant community data from 166 sites across widely distributed L. chinensis communities in northern China, and then calculated the taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity indices (overall, turnover and nestedness) using a pairwise dissimilarity approach. To assess the effects and to explain the variation in the patterns of β-diversity, we collected data on geospatial, climate and soil conditions. We applied descriptive statistics, Mental correlations, and multiple linear regression models to assess the patterns and spatial–environmental drivers of β-diversity.ResultsThe β-turnover, as compared to β-nestedness, exhibited a predominant influence, constituting 92.6% of the taxonomic β-diversity and 80.4% of the phylogenetic β-diversity. Most of the spatial–environmental variables were significantly positively correlated with the overall taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity and β-turnover, but not with β-nestedness. Climatic factors such as MAP and MAT were the strongest predictors of both taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity and β-turnover. The variance partitioning analysis showed that the combined effects of spatial and environmental factors accounted for 19% and 16% of the variation in the taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity (overall), 17% and 12% of the variation in the β-turnover, and 7% and 1% of the variation in the β-nestedness, respectively, which were higher than independent effects of either spatial or environmental factors.DiscussionAt larger spatial scales, the turnover component of β-diversity may be associated with the species complementarity effect, but dominant or functionally important species can vary among communities due to the species selection effect. By incorporating β-diversity into grassland management strategies, we can enhance the provision of vital ecosystem services that bolster human welfare, serving as a resilient barrier against the adverse effects of climate change at regional and global scales.

The West Liaohe River Basin (WRLB) is a typical agro-pastoral interlaced zone in Northeast China where excessive economic development activities brought great pressure on the ecosystem and caused a series of ecological problems, having a negative effect on regional ecological carrying capacity (ECC). The rational construction of ecological security pattern (ESP) is an effective way to improve regional ECC and alleviate the contradiction between ecological protection and economic development. In this study, taking the WLRB as an example, spatiotemporal changes of ECC in the WLRB from 2000 to 2020 were explored by using spatial principal component analysis (SPCA). Furthermore, ecological sources were determined by coupling ECC evaluation results with important ecological patches such as natural protected areas, and the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model combined with the circuit theory method were employed to identify ecological security zoning, ecological corridors and key ecological nodes. Then a comprehensive ESP of the basin was constructed. The results show as follows: 1) The ECC of the overall WLRB was at medium carrying level, yet was spatially differentiated, which decreased from the periphery to the center of the basin in general. ECC showed a fluctuating upward trend from 2000 to 2020. 2) The ecological source area of the WLRB was 21926.91 km², accounting for 17.33% of the total study area. The ecological sources were seriously fragmentated and mainly distributed in the mountain area. The area of ecological conservation zone, optimized buffer zone, ecological transition zone, ecological prevention and control zone were 55672.69 km², 32662.24 km², 23862.84 km² and 12021.04 km², accounting for 44.82%, 26.29%, 19.21% and 9.68%, respectively. We also extracted 95 ecological corridors (with a total length of 3130.97 km), 49 ecological pinch points (with a total area of 200.33 km²) and 30 ecological barrier points (with a total area of 318.30 km²), constituting a “points-lines-planes” comprehensive ecological security pattern. This research can provide scientific reference for the protection and restoration of ecological environment and regional sustainable development.

Abstract Choroidal atrophy is a common fundus pathological change closely related to the development of age‐related macular degeneration (AMD), retinitis pigmentosa, and pathological myopia. Studies suggest that choroidal endothelial cells (CECs) that form the choriocapillaris vessels are the first cells lost in choroidal atrophy. It is found that endothelial cells derived from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC‐ECs) through the MESP1+ mesodermal progenitor stage express CECs‐specific markers and can integrate into choriocapillaris. Single‐cell RNA‐seq (scRNA‐seq) studies show that hPSC‐ECs upregulate angiogenesis and immune‐modulatory and neural protective genes after interacting with ex vivo ischemic choroid. In a rat model of choroidal ischemia (CI), transplantation of hPSC‐ECs into the suprachoroidal space increases choroid thickness and vasculature density. Close‐up examination shows that engrafted hPSC‐ECs integrate with all layers of rat choroidal vessels and last 90 days. Remarkably, EC transplantation improves the visual function of CI rats. The work demonstrates that hPSC‐ECs can be used to repair choroidal ischemia in the animal model, which may lead to a new therapy to alleviate choroidal atrophy implicated in dry AMD, pathological myopia, and other ocular diseases.

Organic carbon in grassland mainly exists in the soil, and root production and turnover play important roles in carbon input into the soil. However, the effects of climate change on plant root dynamics in desert steppe are unknown. We conducted an experiment in a desert steppe, which included ambient temperature (T0); temperature increased by 2 °C (T1); temperature increased by 4 °C (T2); natural precipitation (P0); precipitation increased by 25% (P1); precipitation increased by 50% (P2); and the interaction between warming and increased precipitation. Plant community aboveground characteristics; root production; and root turnover were measured. We found that the root length production of the T0P2; T1P1; T2P0; and T2P1 treatments were significantly higher than that of the T0P0 treatment, with an increment of 98.70%, 11.72%, 163.03%, and 85.14%, respectively. Three treatments with temperature increased by 2 °C (T1P0; T1P1; and T1P2) and significantly increased root turnover rate compared to the T0P0 treatment, with increases of 62.53%, 42.57%, and 35.55%, respectively. The interaction between warming and increased precipitation significantly affected the root production of the community (p < 0.01), but this interaction was non-additive. Future climate warming will benefit the accumulation of root-derived carbon in desert steppe communities.

Phthorimaea absoluta (Meyrick) is an invasive pest that has caused damage to tomatoes and other crops in China since 2017. Pest control is mainly based on chemical methods that pose significant threats to food safety and environmental and ecological security. Light-induced control, a green prevention and control technology, has gained attention recently. However, current light-trapping technology is non-specific, attracting targeted pests alongside natural enemies and non-target organisms. In this study, we characterized the phototactic behavior of tomato leaf miners for the development a specific light-trapping technology for pest control. In situ hybridization revealed opsin expression throughout the body. Furthermore, we investigated the tropism of pests (wild T. absoluta, Toxoptera graminum, and Bemisia tabaci) and natural enemies (Nesidiocoris tenuis and Trichogramma pintoi) using a wavelength-lamp tropism experiment. We found that 365 ± 5 nm light could accurately trap wild P. absoluta without trapping natural enemies and other insects. Finally, we analyzed the phototactic behavior of the mutant strains LW2(−/−) and BL(−/−). LW2 and BL mutants showed significant differences in phototactic behavior. The LW2(−/−) strain was attracted to light at 390 ± 5 nm and the BL(−/−) strain was unresponsive to any light. Our findings will help to develop specific light-trapping technology for controlling tomato leaf miners, providing a basis for understanding pest population dynamics and protecting crops against natural enemies.

Complex geographical environments and intensified human activities have induced significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity in ecosystem services (ESs) and their relationships worldwide, especially in agropastoral ecotones. Identifying the ecological and socioeconomic driving factors of the spatiotemporal dynamics of the relationships and bundles among multiple ESs is essential for effective agropastoral ecotone management and restoration. Herein, five key ESs, including water yield (WY), carbon sequestration (CS), sand fixation (SF), soil conservation (SC), and food production (FP), in the northern piedmont of the Yinshan Mountains (NPYM), a typical agropastoral ecotone, were quantified from 1990 to 2018. Ecosystem service bundles (ESBs) were identified by the K-means algorithm, and the trade-offs/synergies among the different ESs in each ESB were investigated using Spearman’s correlation analysis. Moreover, the main driving factors of the spatiotemporal dynamics of the ES relationships and ESBs were identified by the geographical detector model. Our results showed that the five ESs in the NPYM exhibited high spatiotemporal heterogeneity over the last three decades, with WY, SC and FP significantly improving over time but CS and SF slightly decreasing. Considering the ecological features and spatial distribution, the NPYM could be divided into four ESBs: the grassland protection bundle (GPB), desertification control bundle (DCB), agricultural production bundle (APB) and forest conservation bundle (FCB). Although trade-offs between WY and CS and synergy between SC and CS occurred in almost all ESBs, significant differences in the relationships between the other ESs were observed in the different ESBs. Generally, land use type was one of the dominant drivers of most ES relationships in all ESBs, especially in the APB. However, climate, vegetation and socioeconomic factors also played important roles in the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of various ES relationships in some bundles. Moreover, the substantial changes in the different ESBs over the last three decades were mainly due to climatic and socioeconomic factors. Overall, our results indicated that identifying the spatiotemporal heterogeneity and driving factors of ES relationships and ESBs could provide useful guidance for developing targeted zoning management strategies in agropastoral ecotones.

[Objective] The impacts of a metal mine on the surrounding grassland were studied, and the ecological environment was evaluated using remote sensing technology as a significant aid to ecological restoration and environmental protection of mining areas. [Methods] The study was conducted at a desert-steppe gold mine located in an ecologically fragile area. Spatial and temporal dynamics of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in the mine area were analyzed based on long time series remote sensing data to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the ecological quality of the study area using the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI). [Results] The impacted area of desert-steppe gold mining was determined as the area with a radius of 5 km outward from the mine boundary. There was a fluctuating increase in NDVI values in the mine and impact areas that varied with the duration of mining in the steppe from 2009 to 2021. The annual average value of NVDI within the mine area during the underground mining operation period was 51.9% higher than during the open pit mining operation period. In addition, the impact of open pit mining on vegetation in the study area was higher compared with underground mining. The RSEI values in the mining area and the impacted area initially increased, then decreased, and then stabilized, resulting in an overall non-significant increase. The spatial distribution of RSEI indicated that the areas with poor ecological environmental quality in the mine and impact areas were mainly the waste dump and surrounding area. [Conclusion] Gold mining influenced the surrounding desert grassland within a radius of 5 km from the mine. The ecological environment of the mine and the impacted area gradually improved through management efforts during mining. Ecological restoration and environmental management of the waste dump and the surrounding area should be strengthened during the process of mine ecological construction.

Recently, the frequent occurrence of droughts has caused a serious impact on vegetation growth and progression. This research is based upon the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from 2001 to 2020. The correlation between the NDVI and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) at disparate time scales was used to assess the response of vegetation growth to drought in the Yinshanbeilu region. The drought levels of SPEI1, SPEI3, SPEI6, and SPEI12 increased prominently in the eastern region of the country, while the NDVI decreased significantly from east to west in spring, summer, and autumn but was reversed in the winter. The area with an upward trend (33.86%) was slightly lower than that with a downward trend (66.14%). The correlation coefficients between the NDVI and SPEI over the entire year increased with the SPEI timescale. The elevated values were concentrated in the southeastern and western regions of the survey region. Additionally, the best correlation timescales were SPEI6 and SPEI12. Grassland was the most sensitive vegetation type to the SPEI response in the NDVI. The correlation coefficients of NDVI and SPEI1–12 were 0.313, 0.459, 0.422, and 0.406. Both spring and summer were more responsive to SPEI12, whereas autumn and winter were more responsive to SPEI3. The correlation of disparate time scales exhibited complex soil texture features with respect to different seasonal scales, and the soil texture showed a strong response to vegetation in both summer and autumn. Loam, sandy loam, and silty loam all exhibited the highest response to SPEI12, with coefficients of 0.509, 0.474, and 0.403, respectively.

ObjectiveDecrease in free thyroid hormone T3 (FT3) can be used as an independent prognostic indicator for the risk of death in ICUs. However, FT3 as a predictive marker is hindered by its accuracy. The study introduces the concept of dynamic FT3 data as a means to bolster the value of FT3 as a prognostic tool. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the prognostic value of dynamic FT3 evolution in a comprehensive ICU setting, analyze the consistency between dynamic FT3 changes and variations in disease severity, and explore the feasibility of FT3 as an objective indicator for real-time clinical treatment feedback.MethodsEmploying a single-center prospective observational study, FT3 measurements were taken on multiple days following enrollment, corresponding clinical data were collected. To investigated the pattern of dynamic changes of FT3,its prognostic significance in forecasting the risk of 28-day mortality, the alignment between dynamic FT3 changes and variations in the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score.ResultsThe survival group exhibited higher last FT3 levels compared to the lowest point (p0.05). The study also identifies the optimal correlation between FT3 and SOFA score at day 5 (optimal correlation coefficient -0.546).The ROC curve for FT3 at day 5 yielded an optimal AUC of 0.88, outperforming the SOFA score. Human activities and natural disasters are progressively damaging regional ecosystems and causing ecological fragmentation. Therefore, it is essential to establish or restore effective connections between ecological spaces that create regional ecological networks that exhibit structural and functional resilience. This study developed a network model based on landscape ecology and complexity science with indicators integrated to assess the resilience of regional-scale ecological networks. Regional priority conservation areas can be identified by disturbance simulations using a capacity-load cascade failure model supported by the network model. Our research indicates that the regional ecological network in the Agro-Pastoral Ecotone of the North Yinshan Mountain in China is relatively fragile. The network can be restored to a stable state when the failure rate of the network nodes is less than 20 %, but it will be completely paralyzed when the percentage is higher than 75 %. Based on the type and comprehensive importance of the nodes, as well as the results of the network’s structural and functional resilience, we have determined different levels of conservation areas. We also made recommendations for the reconfiguration of the ecological spatial network and regional differentiated ecological management. Our findings have practical significance for the development of adaptive spatial planning and management policies on a large regional scale for ecological conservation and restoration.

[Objective] The relationship between land use change and ecological process in the ten tributaries area in Inner Mongolia was studied to reveal the relationship between human activities, land use, and ecological environment in order to provide a basis for the optimization of land use structure and regional ecological environment protection. [Methods] Landsat images from 2000 to 2020 were selected. Land use data and transfer matrices in different periods were obtained by using the method of supervised classification combined with a land statistical module. The dynamic change of land use and the comprehensive index of land use degree were analyzed. On this basis, the NDVI value, ecological environment quality index, and other indicators were selected by using mathematical statistics and other methods to comprehensively evaluate the ecological environment quality of the ten tributaries. [Results] ① During the 20 years of the study period, the proportion of forest land and grassland area changed the most, and the proportion of water area was the smallest, with frequent transitions between land use types, An obvious "upward trend" for forest land and an obvious "downward trend" for grassland and unused land were observed; ② The ecological environment quality indexes of the transformation of land use types in 2000, 2010, and 2020 in the ten tributaries were 0.526 1, 0.537 3 and 0.543 3, showing an overall upward trend. In terms of spatial distribution, the ecological environment quality was high in the east and low in the west, and high in the south and low in the north; ③ The annual average precipitation and annual average wind speed had significant positive impacts on the ecological environment quality. The annual average temperature had a significant negative impact on the ecological environment quality. [Conclusion] With the rapid development of urbanization occurring from 2000 to 2020, the ecological environment quality of the ten tributaries has also developed in a good direction. The ecological environment quality in the study area has improved overall and deteriorated locally. The transformation between construction land, forest land, grassland, and unused land is the main reason for changes in ecological environment quality. Environmental protection policies such as returning farmland to forest have continuously improved the environmental quality of the study area.

Although the issue of sparse expert samples at the early stage of training in inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) is successfully resolved by the introduction of generative adversarial network (GAN), the inherent drawbacks of GAN result in ineffective generated samples. Therefore, we propose an algorithm for generative adversarial inverse reinforcement learning that is based on deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG). We use the deterministic strategy to replace the random noise input of the initial GAN model and reconstruct the generator of the GAN based on the Actor-Critic mechanism in order to improve the quality of GAN-generated samples during adversarial training. Meanwhile, we mix the GAN-generated virtual samples with the original expert samples of IRL as the expert sample set of IRL. Our approach not only solves the problem of sparse expert samples at the early stage of training, but most importantly, it makes the decision-making process of IRL occurring under GAN more efficient. In the subsequent IRL decision-making process, we also analyze the differences between the mixed expert samples and the non-expert trajectory samples generated by the initial strategy to determine the best reward function. The learned reward function is used to drive the RL process positively for policy updating and optimization, on which further non-expert trajectory samples are generated. By comparing the differences between the new non-expert samples and the mixed expert sample set, we hope to iteratively arrive at the reward function and optimal policy. Performance tests in the MuJoCo physical simulation environment and trajectory prediction experiments in Grid World show that our model improves the quality of GAN-generated samples and reduces the computational cost of the network training by approximately 20% for each given environment, applying to decision planning for autonomous driving.

Based on analyses of characteristics, hydrocarbon charging history and geological conditions for the formation of Sinian–Cambrian reservoirs in the north slope area of central Sichuan paleo-uplift, the natural gas origin, accumulation evolution, accumulation pattern and formation conditions of large lithologic gas reservoirs have been investigated. Through comprehensive analyses of natural gas composition, carbon and hydrogen isotopic compositions, fluid inclusions, reservoir bitumen, and geological conditions such as lithofacies paleogeography and beach body characterization, it is concluded that: (1) The natural gas in the Sinian–Cambrian of the north slope area is mainly oil cracking gas, and different contribution ratios of multiple sets of source rocks lead to different geochemical characteristics of natural gas in different reservoirs. (2) Although the both Sinian and Cambrian gas reservoirs in this area are lithologic gas reservoirs under monocline background, the former has normal-pressure and the latter has high-pressure. There are three types of source-reservoir-caprock combinations: single source with lower generation and upper reservoir, double sources with lower generation and upper reservoir or with side source and lateral reservoir, double sources with lower generation and upper reservoir or with upper generation and lower reservoir. The Permian–Triassic is the main generation period of oil, Early–Middle Jurassic is the main generation period of oil cracking gas and wet gas, and Late Jurassic–Cretaceous is the main generation period of dry gas. (3) The Sinian–Cambrian system of the north slope area has two favorable conditions for formation of large lithologic gas reservoirs, one is that the large scale beach facies reservoirs are located in the range of ancient oil reservoirs or near the source rocks, which is conducive to the “in-situ” large-scale accumulation of cracked gas in the paleo-oil reservoirs, the other is that the large scale mound-beach complex reservoirs and sealing layers of inter beach tight zones match effectively to form large lithologic traps under the slope background. The research results confirm that the north slope area has large multi-layer lithologic gas reservoirs with more than one trillion cubic meters of natural gas resources and great exploration potential.

Low temperatures greatly influence newly introduced species, and increased cold tolerance can facilitate their establishment in new environments. The invasive alien species Ambrosia artemisiifolia is distributed at high latitudes and altitudes, where it suffers more from cold stress than it would at low latitudes or altitudes. Whether cold stress influences the accumulation of cryoprotectants and cold tolerance in A. artemisiifolia, and further influences the cold tolerance of its biological control agent, Ophraella communa, through feeding remain unknown. We investigated the levels of cryoprotectants and metabolic changes in A. artemisiifolia. We found that the level of total sugar, trehalose, proline, and other cold responsible metabolites increased in A. artemisiifolia after rapid cold-hardening (RCH) treatment, when compared to normal plants. These indicated that RCH treatment could improve the cold-hardiness of A. artemisiifolia. We then investigated the levels of cryoprotectants and metabolic changes in O. communa. We found that O. communa fed on RCH-treated A. artemisiifolia had higher levels of total sugar, trehalose, proline, glycerol, lipid, lower water content, lower super-cooling point, and increased cold tolerance compared to O. communa fed on normal A. artemisiifolia. This suggested that O. communa fed on cold-hardened A. artemisiifolia could increase its cold tolerance. Results showed a trophic transmission in insect cold tolerance. Our study enriches the theoretical basis for the co-evolution of cold tolerance in invasive and herbivorous insects.

The Ten Kongdui watershed is an essential part of the upper Yellow River baisn of China. The ecosystem in this region has low stability and hazards of sandstorm and soil erosion are serious. By studying the spatio-temporal changes and spatial correlation between vegetation cover and soil conservation, the inhibition effect of vegetation on soil erosion in time and space can be clarified, and the driving factors of soil erosion in a certain area can be further explained. The research results provide data support for artificial vegetation construction and soil erosion control in the Yellow River basin in the future. In this study, the invest model was used to calculate the soil retention of the watershed, and then the spatial autocorrelation analysis was used to analyze the vegetation coverage and soil retention in space. The relationship between changes of the vegetation coverage and soil conservation during 2000–2020 in the Ten Kongdui watershed is analyzed in this paper. The research shows that: (1) During the research period, the vegetation coverage maintained an increasing trend in Ten Kongdui watershed; (2) From 2000 to 2020, with the increased vegetation coverage, soil retention increased, indicating that increasing vegetation coverage can effectively prevent soil erosion; and (3) Vegetation coverage and soil conservation presented a local spatial auto-correlation, Moran’s I index was less than 0, but the years from 2000 to 2020 witnessed gradual growth of the correlation coefficient. There are significant differences in spatial distribution. ‘High-high’ and ‘low-low’ are sporadically distributed in the sandstorm area on the middle reaches of Kubuqi and sporadically in the hilly and gully areas on the upper reaches. Moreover, ‘high-low’ and ‘low-high’ correlation coefficients were distributed in gully areas on the upper reaches and alluvial plains on the lower reaches. The alluvial plains on the lower reaches are mainly farmland ecosystems, with a high NDVI in the growing season but poor soil erosion resistance and weak soil conservation ability. The results emphasized the importance of vegetation coverage change in space for soil conservation of different type of underlying surfaces. The vegetation coverage change effects of soil conservation in plain terrain will be muted. This work provided a certain theory and criterion for us to further research the predictive model of soil erosion .

The ecological conservation and restoration of drylands is a global challenge, which is always under resources constraints and in competition with land developments. Here, we aim to identify ecological conservation and restoration priority areas based on the objectives of maximizing ecological values and minimizing opportunity costs with zonation as a heuristic spatial optimization tool. We take the Inner Mongolia (IM) of China as a typical dryland region. Results reveal that the efficiency of multi-objectives for ecological restoration is often better than a single objective. IM should focus on ecological conservation supplemented by restoration. Conserving 36.9% and restoring 13.1% of IM can provide an average of 72% of ecosystem functions while consuming 20% of opportunity costs. Our framework aligns with the need for nature-based solutions and rationalizes the allocation of resources for ecological conservation and restoration projects in complex dryland regions.

Water resources are severely scarce in desert steppes, and precipitation rarely collects in rivers or is transformed into groundwater. Evapotranspiration (ET) is the primary “export” of precipitation conversion and is the main mechanism for water vapor exchange between the underlying surface and atmosphere. ET changes have certain scale effects. This study focused on the natural grasslands in the Xilamuren Desert Steppe and analyzed and estimated the ET patterns at different scales, including micro-, point-, and surface scales, using observational data from instruments such as a photosynthetic meter, Eddy-covariance system (EC), and large-aperture scintillometer (LAS) from the Ecological Hydrology National Field Science Observation Station in the northern foothills of the Yin Mountains, Inner Mongolia. The spatial scale was extended based on this analysis. The results showed that at the microscale, the diurnal variation in the photosynthetic and transpiration rates of Leymus chinensis followed a bimodal curve. In July and August (high-temperature months), photosynthetic and transpiration rates were almost synchronous. In May and October, when the temperature was moderate, the transpiration rate was delayed compared to the photosynthetic rate at the first peak, and the second peak was significantly smaller than the first peak. At the point-scale, the daily average ET during the growing season was 1.37 mm·d−1 and the total cumulative ET was 251 mm. Transpiration levels exhibited significant seasonal variation in the following order: July > August > June > September > May > October. At the surface-scale, the daily average ET during the growing season was 1.60 mm·d−1 and the total cumulative ET was 294 mm, which was 17% higher than that of the point-scale. The surface-scale ET was estimated using the observed values of the EC and the scale relationship formula and was optimized using different spatial scales of crop coefficients. This well reflected the ET patterns at the surface-scale. Therefore, this study proposes a spatial scale expansion method for a homogeneous underlying surface, verifies its value, and provides methodological support for estimating ET in cases of data scarcity.

Moisture plays a pivotal role in the establishment of vegetation in sandy areas, underscoring the need to comprehend the water utilization strategies employed by established trees for the judicious use of water resources. Despite this significance, there exists a research gap concerning the water uptake patterns and consumption disparities between the dominant trees, namely the dry willow (Salix matsudana) and small-leafed poplar (Populus simonii), in the Mu Us sandy region. Consequently, our study sought to investigate the water utilization patterns and transpiration water consumption of these two plants. This was achieved through the analysis of hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions in xylem water, soil water, and groundwater, coupled with the assessment of stem flow rates of tree trunks. The findings reveal that both Salix matsudana and Populus simonii exhibited variations in soil water content with soil depth, characterized by an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease. During the months of July, August, and September, both species demonstrated the ability to absorb water from multiple sources concurrently. Specifically, Salix matsudana and Populus simonii predominantly utilized middle and shallow soil water sources in July and September, respectively. However, in August, both species primarily relied on shallow soil water for absorption. Over the period from July to September, the sap flow rate of Salix matsudana surpassed that of Populus simonii by 1888.2 mL·h−1 to 2499.04 mL·h−1, representing a 1.5 to 2.2 times increase. This underscores the necessity for Salix matsudana to draw water from middle and deep soil layers to compensate for shallow water deficits. In summary, schemes for the establishment of vegetation in sandy areas should consider the dynamic nature of water uptake and evapotranspiration, emphasizing the importance of regulating these processes for efficient water conservation and utilization.

Ultra-low permeability–tight sandstone (gravel) gas reservoir is an important exploration target for natural gas both domestically and internationally. As a crucial oil and gas exploration basin in China, the Bohai Bay Basin has discovered tight sandstone (gravel) gas in every depression. However, the distribution, origin, and accumulation model of tight sandstone (gravel) gas reservoirs were not systematically studied by previous researchers, who instead mainly concentrated on depressions from the basin-wide perspective. The research conclusively demonstrates that ultra-low permeability–tight sandstone (gravel) gas reservoirs are widely distributed in the Bohai Bay Basin, covering various depressions and multiple strata of Paleozoic, Cenozoic, and Upper Paleozoic coal-formed gas as well as Paleogene oil-type gas. The Upper Paleozoic ultra-low permeability–tight sandstone gas reservoirs are mainly distributed in residual Upper Paleozoic strata of the Huanghua, Linqing, and Jiyang depressions. Most of those reservoirs, which are located in uplifted sag zones, are structural gas reservoirs, and because the strata were buried deeply in the past, most of the reservoirs have worse physical properties. This natural gas is typical coal-formed gas originating in Carboniferous and Permian, and others are Paleogene oil-type gas. Paleogene ultra-low permeability–tight gas reservoirs are widely distributed in all depressions, including the multiple strata in the Kongdian Formation and the second, third. and fourth members of the Shahejie Formation (Es2, Es3, and Es4); The gas reservoirs are located in the uplift, slope, and steep slope zones of the sags, including a variety of trap types, such as lithology, lithology-structure, structure reservoirs, and others. Sandstone reservoirs often found in the Es2 and Es3 are distributed in gentle slopes, whereas sandstone and glutenite reservoirs can be found in the Es4 and Kongdian Formation (Ek), with the glutenites mainly distributed in steep slope area. Since the Paleogene is a continuous deposit, burial depth appears to be a controlling factor in the reservoirs physical properties. Densification threshold depths for distinct depressions range from 3200 m to 4000 m. The majority of the natural gas is gas formed from Paleogene oil-type, while some of it is gas formed from Upper Paleozoic coal. Four different hydrocarbon accumulation models have been developed in this area in accordance with the relationship between gas sources and reservoirs. These models include migration along fault with old source rock and new reservoir, near-source accumulation with new source rock and new reservoir, distant-source accumulation with old source rock and old reservoir, and migration along fault with new source rock and old reservoir, of which the first two are the main hydrocarbon accumulation models. Two sets of Carboniferous–Permian and Paleogene strata are developed, and the remaining natural gas resources have great potential in the Bohai Bay Basin. The Carboniferous–Permian beneficial zone of secondary hydrocarbon generation, the structures adjacent to the margin of the Paleogene gas generation center, and the sweet spot in lithology reservoirs would all be promising areas for further exploration. The research is of instructive significance for tight sandstone (gravel) gas exploration in the Bohai Bay Basin.

Due to the region’s social economy and historical culture, rough grazing has led to unresolved grassland-based ecological problems in Northern China. Soil microorganisms are essential structural and functional components of underground ecosystems, and the effects of various grazing intensities on the physicochemical properties and bacterial communities of soil are unclear. A stocking density regulation experiment was carried out in the desert steppe of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In the study area, four grazing intensities were set, namely, the enclosure control group (CK), light grazing, moderate grazing, and heavy grazing. Field investigations and 16S rRNA sequencing were used to compare and analyze the characteristics of soil bacterial community structures and their correlations with soil nutrient factors under different grazing intensities. The experiment showed the following results: (1) The Shannon, Simpson, and Pielou indices of the light grazing group were significantly higher than those of the CK (p < 0.05), and the indices of the moderate and heavy grazing groups were lower than those of the CK, but the difference was not significant, and there were no significant differences in the Chao1 index between each group. (2) Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Chloroflexi were the main bacterial phyla. (3) With the exception of soil organic matter and available potassium, which had significant negative correlations with the Shannon index (p < 0.05), other soil factors had no significant correlation with the soil bacterial diversity. (4) The contents of soil organic matter, total phosphorus, alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium influenced the differences between soil bacterial communities under different grazing intensities.

Alligator weed Alternanthera philoxeroides is a perennial, worldwide pernicious weed. The beetle Agasicles hygrophila is considered to be a classical biological agent used to control A. philoxeroides. In the insect peripheral olfactory system, the odorant receptor co-receptor (ORco) plays an important function in the perception of odors in insects. However, the function of ORco in the mating and host-finding behaviors of A. hygrophila remains unclear. In this study, we characterized the odorant receptor co-receptor of A. hygrophila (AhygOrco). Real-time quantitative PCR (qRT–PCR) showed that AhygOrco was predominantly expressed in the antennae of both male and female adults, and the difference between male and female antennae was not significant. The RNA interference (RNAi) results showed that compared to the control, the injection of AhygOrco dsRNA strongly reduced the expression of AhygOrco by 90% in male beetles and 89% in female beetles. The mate-seeking and feeding behavior of AhygOrco-silenced beetles were significantly inhibited. Male adults were significantly less successful in finding a mate compared to the control group. Furthermore, host allocation abilities toward A. philoxeroides of both adults were significantly repressed. These results indicated that AhygOrco is associated with A. hygrophila feeding and mate-seeking and that inhibition of AhygOrco expression is one of the causes of reduced host and mate recognition in A. hygrophila. Meanwhile, the study provides support for exploring gene functions based on RNAi.

Shale gas is a green, low-carbon and clean unconventional natural gas energy. China is rich in shale gas resources. Accelerating shale gas exploration and development is of great practical significance to improve China's energy structure and achieve the goal of “2030 carbon peak and 2060 carbon neutralization”. The Ordovician Wufeng Formation to Silurian Longmaxi Formation in Sichuan Basin is the key strata for shale gas exploration and development in China. Based on the experimental analysis of shale gas in Wufeng Formation to Longmaxi Formation in Weiyuan, Changning, Zhaotong, Fuling and Weirong areas of Sichuan Basin, this paper systematically analyzes the geochemical characteristics of shale gas in Wufeng Formation to Longmaxi Formation, discusses the genesis of shale gas, the causes of hydrocarbon isotope inversion and the source of shale gas, and looks forward to the exploration prospects of shale gas resources in the basin. It has important guiding significances for shale gas exploration and development in Sichuan Basin and even in China. The results show that: (1) The shale gas of Wufeng-Longmaxi Formations is a typical dry gas, and the hydrocarbon isotopes are distributed in negative sequence. The carbon isotopes of alkane gas in Changning, Zhaotong and Fuling areas are heavier and have a higher degree of thermal evolution than those in Weiyuan and Weirong areas, and the rare gas is of crustal origin. (2) Shale gas of Wufeng-Longmaxi Formations is a thermogenic oil-typed gas at high-over mature stage, which is mainly the mixture of crude oil cracking gas and kerogen cracking gas. The hydrocarbon isotope inversion of alkane gas is mainly caused by the mixing of crude oil cracking gas and kerogen cracking gas at high-over mature stage, the exchange between formation water and methane at high evolution stage and so on. (3) The carbon isotopic values of methane in shale gas of Wufeng-Longmaxi Formations match the carbon isotopic values of kerogen in mudstones of Longmaxi Formation of Lower Silurian, which conforms to the law of carbon isotopic fractionation δ13Ckerogen>δ13Coil>δ13Calkane gas. (4) The total amount of marine, marine continental transitional and continental facies shale gas resources in Sichuan Basin is about 41.5 × 1012 m3, with broad exploration prospects in resource potential.

Heat shock proteins (Hsps) function as molecular chaperones that enable organisms to withstand stress and maintain normal life activities. In this study, we identified heat shock protein 70 (encoded by hsp70), which exhibits a higher expression in the mature male testis than in the unmature testis of Ophraella communa. Tissue expression profile revealed that Ochsp70 levels in males were highest in the testis, whereas those in females were highest in the head. Moreover, the expression of Ochsp70 was found to be significantly induced in female bursa copulatrix after mating. Double-stranded RNA dsOchsp70 was injected into males to performance RNA interference, which significantly decreased the male Ochsp70 expression levels within 20 d post-injection, whereas no effect was observed on the Ochsp70 expression level in the females after mating with dsOchsp70-injected males. However, significant downregulation of female fertility was marked simultaneously. Furthermore, knockdown of female Ochsp70 expression also led to a significant reduction in fertility. Finally, comparative transcriptomic analysis identified glucose dehydrogenase and insulin-like growth factor binding protein as putative downstream targets of Ochsp70. Overall, we deduced that Ochsp70 is an indispensable gene and a potential male mating factor in O. communa, which regulates reproduction.

Sorghum halepense competes with crops and grass species in cropland, grassland, and urban environments, increasing invasion risk. However, the invasive historical dynamics and distribution patterns of S. halepense associated with current and future climate change and land-use change (LUC) remain unknown. We first analyzed the invasive historical dynamics of S. halepense to explore its invasion status and expansion trends. We then used a species distribution model to examine how future climate change and LUC will facilitate the invasion of S. halepense. We reconstructed the countries that have historically been invaded by S. halepense based on databases with detailed records of countries and occurrences. We ran biomod2 based on climate data and land-use data at 5′ resolution, assessing the significance of environmental variables and LUC. Sorghum halepense was widely distributed worldwide through grain trade and forage introduction, except in Africa. Europe and North America provided most potential global suitable habitats (PGSHs) for S. halepense in cropland, grassland, and urban environments, representing 48.69%, 20.79%, and 84.82%, respectively. The future PGSHs of S. halepense increased continuously in the Northern Hemisphere, transferring to higher latitudes. Environmental variables were more significant than LUC in predicting the PGSHs of S. halepense. Future PGSHs of S. halepense are expected to increase, exacerbating the invasion risk through agricultural LUC. These results provide a basis for the early warning and prevention of S. halepense worldwide.

To predict and mitigate the effects of climate change on communities and ecosystems, the joint effects of extreme climatic events on species interactions need to be understood. Using the common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.)—leaf beetle (Ophraella communa) system, we investigated the effects of heat wave and elevated CO2 on common ragweed growth, secondary metabolism, and the consequent impacts on the beetle. The results showed that elevated CO2 and heat wave facilitated A. artemisiifolia growth; further, A. artemisiifolia accumulated large amounts of defensive secondary metabolites. Being fed on A. artemisiifolia grown under elevated CO2 and heat wave conditions resulted in the poor performance of O. communa (high mortality, long development period, and low reproduction). Overall, under elevated CO2, heat wave improved the defensive ability of A. artemisiifolia against herbivores. On the other hand, enhanced adaptability to climatic changes may aggravate invasive plant distribution, posing a challenge to the control of invasive plants in the future.

Located in the middle and upper parts of the Yellow River Basin, Qingshuihe County, Inner Mongolia, is a typical hilly and gully loess region and one of areas under the implementation of major ecological protection and restoration projects in the key ecological areas of Yellow River. Scientifically and accurately constructing a soil quality evaluation system for different types of artificial forest land and evaluating their soil quality are essential because they help optimize the structure of artificial forest land and improve the soil quality in the loess hilly area of Yellow River Basin. In this study, soil from four representative types of artificial forest land in the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River Basin in Inner Mongolia was selected as the study object, with natural non-forest land as the control. Sixteen soil property indices in five classes, namely, soil texture, acid–base properties, moisture, pore, and nutrient, were screened using correlation analysis, minimum dataset (MDS), and principal component analysis methods, and an MDS of soil quality evaluation was constructed. Results showed that (1) the evaluation indices of artificial forest land soil quality based on the MDS included total potassium content, total phosphorus content, alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen content, total nitrogen content, sand content, moisture content, and non-capillary porosity. (2) No significant differences were observed in the soil quality index among the MDS, total dataset, and significant dataset (SDS), all of which exhibited significant positive correlations. (3) The soil quality of the different types of forest land was sorted from high to low as follows: mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests, larch forests, mixed arbor and shrub forests, Armeniaca sibirica forests, and natural non-forest land.

Understanding the host-selection behavior of herbivorous insects is important to clarify their efficacy and safety as biocontrol agents. To explore the host-plant selection of the beetle Ophraella communa, a natural enemy of the alien invasive common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), we conducted a series of outdoor choice experiments in cages in 2010 and in open fields in 2010 and 2011 to determine the preference of O. communa for A. artemisiifolia and three non-target plant species: sunflower (Helianthus annuus), cocklebur (Xanthium sibiricum), and giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida). In the outdoor cage experiment, no eggs were found on sunflowers, and O. communa adults rapidly moved from sunflowers to the other three plant species. Instead, adults preferred to lay eggs on A. artemisiifolia, followed by X. sibiricum and A. trifida, although very few eggs were observed on A. trifida. Observing the host-plant selection of O. communa in an open sunflower field, we found that O. communa adults always chose A. artemisiifolia for feeding and egg laying. Although several adults (H. annuus, no feeding or oviposition were observed, and adults quickly transferred to A. artemisiifolia. In 2010 and 2011, 3 egg masses (96 eggs) were observed on sunflowers, but they failed to hatch or develop into adults. In addition, some O. communa adults crossed the barrier formed by H. annuus to feed and oviposit on A. artemisiifolia planted in the periphery, and persisted in patches of different densities. Additionally, only 10% of O. communa adults chose to feed and oviposit on the X. sibiricum barrier. These findings suggest that O. communa poses no threat to the biosafety of H. anunuus and A. trifida and exhibits a robust dispersal capacity to find and feed on A. artemisiifolia. However, X. sibiricum has the potential to be an alternative host plant for O. communa.

Soil erosion is a popular environmental issue that threatens sustainability. Influenced by multiple factors, such as climate, soil, and terrain, Baotou City, which is in the Bohai Sea Economic Circle and the Economic Belt along the Yellow River, has a severe ecological environment. In this study, revised soil and soil wind erosion equations were used to evaluate the soil erosion dynamics in Baotou City, and the potential driving factors of soil erosion were further investigated. Results showed that from 1990 to 2020, the water erosion modulus in Baotou City increased first, decreased, and then increased, with great fluctuations in annual changes. The wind erosion modulus decreased continuously, with a small fluctuation in annual changes. Water erosion in 2020 was more severe, with 4840.5 km2 added to the desert steppe and 1300.5 km2 reduced in the Yellow River Basin. The extent of wind erosion was significantly reduced, and the phenomenon of wind erosion improved. Meteorological factors are the primary factors that influence soil water erosion and soil wind erosion. Meanwhile, adverse climate changes can alter physical and chemical soil properties and vegetation coverage, thereby indirectly influencing soil erosion. With the implementation of the Beijing–Tianjin sandstorm source control, the farmland return to forest project, the ecological restoration and protection project at the southern and northern foothills of Daqingshan Mountains, grazing prohibition, and rotation grazing—including grassland awards, subsidies, and other policies and systems during this period—the overall deteriorating trend of the grassland ecological environment in Baotou was contained, grassland ecological system functions were improved, wind and sand erosion was prevented, biodiversity was maintained, and the ecological service functions of soil and water conservation were guaranteed.

Carbon dioxide sequestration by minerals containing calcium or magnesium is a safe and stable approach to reduce the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. In this work, the bioleaching method was applied to pretreat the anorthite, aiming to improve the carbonation conversion rate of anorthite with low energy consumption, low cost, and no pollution. A bacteria named Herbaspirillum huttiense W-01 was found and selected as the strain. The effects of the bacterial strain on the Ca2+ leaching behavior of anorthite and the corresponding carbonation conversion rate were investigated. Then, the strengthening mechanism of the bacteria was clarified from the Ca2+ leaching rate and the crystal structure of anorthite. The bioleaching results showed that after 9 days of treatment, the pH value of the fermentation solution decreased to 6.01 from 7.20, and the concentration of Ca2+ was 8.1 mmol/L with a 4.65% leaching rate, which was about twice that of sterile medium. During the pretreatment period of one to 9 days, the carbonation conversion rate of different systems (A1: anorthite and bacteria, B1: anorthite and medium, C1: anorthite and distilled water, D1: anorthite and bacteria, cleaning step to remove the medium components) increased with time. After 9 days, the carbonation conversion rate of system D1 reached 18.74%, which was 3.46% higher than that of system C1, suggesting a better carbon sequestration effect of anorthite after the bioleaching pretreatment. In addition, a bioleaching residue with weakened thermal stability and decreased crystallinity was formed after the microbial pretreatment. Furthermore, it can be seen that the surface of the bioleaching residue was rough and showed obvious corrosion at the edges, and the specific surface area increased from 0.5187 m2/g to 0.9883 m2/g. It is precisely because of the changes in the crystal structure of anorthite caused by bioleaching, especially in mineralogy and morphology, that the carbonation activity of anorthite was enhanced. This research may provide a reference for the enhancement of carbon dioxide mineralization by basic or ultrabasic rocks through microbial methods.

Schizophrenia patients with auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are diseased groups of serious psychosis with still unknown etiology. The aim of this research was to identify the neurophysiological correlates of auditory verbal hallucinations. Revealing the neural correlates of auditory hallucination is not merely of great clinical significance, but it is also quite essential to study the pathophysiological correlates of schizophrenia. In this study, 25 Schizophrenia patients with AVHs (AVHs group, 23.2 ± 5.35 years), 52 Schizophrenia patients without AVHs (non-AVHs group, 25.79 ± 5.63 years) and 28 healthy subjects (NC group, 26.14 ± 5.45 years) were enrolled. Dynamic functional connectivity was studied with a sliding-window method and functional connectivity states were then obtained with the k-means clustering algorithm in the three groups. We found that schizophrenia patients with AVHs were characterized by significant decreased static functional connectivity and enhanced variability of dynamic functional connectivity (non-parametric permutation test, Bonferroni correction, p < 0.05). In addition, the AVHs group also demonstrated increased number of brain states, suggesting brain dynamics enhanced in these patients compared with the non-AVHs group. Our findings suggested that there were abnormalities in the connection of brain language regions in auditory verbal hallucinations. It appears that the interruption of connectivity from the language region might be critical to the pathological basis of AVHs.

Agasicles hygrophila Selman and Vogt is used in the biological control of the invasive weed Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. However, with the northward establishment of A. philoxeroides in China, the weak adaptivity of A. hygrophila to cold weather has resulted in the ineffective control of A. philoxeroides in northern China. Cold acclimation can significantly enhance insect cold tolerance, enabling them to cope with more frequent climate fluctuations. To improve the biological control efficacy of A. hygrophila in cold climates, we compared the effects of rapid cold hardening and acclimation on A. hygrophila under laboratory conditions. On initially transferring adults from 26 to −10 °C for 2 h, mortality reached 80%. However, when pre-exposed to 0 °C for 2 h and then transferred to −10 °C for 2 h, adult mortality was reduced to 36.67%. These findings indicate that cold acclimation can enhance the cold tolerance of A. hygrophila under laboratory conditions. However, the beneficial cold acclimation effects waned after more than 15 min of recovery at 26 °C. Exposure to 15 °C for 24 h or gradual cooling from 0 to −10 °C at 1 °C·min−1 also induced cold acclimation, indicating that long-term cold and fluctuating cold acclimation are also potentially effective strategies for enhancing low-temperature tolerance.

Fluorine being a well-known and essential element for normal physiological functions of tissues of different organisms is frequently used for growth and development of body. The mechanisms of adverse and injurious impacts of fluoride are not clear and still are under debate. Therefore, this study was executed to ascertain the potential mechanisms of sodium fluoride in liver tissues of ducks. For this purpose, a total of 14 ducks were randomly divided and kept in two groups including control group and sodium fluoride treated group. The ducks in control group were fed with normal diet while the ducks in other group were exposed to sodium fluoride (750 mg/kg) for 28 days. The results showed that exposure to sodium fluoride induced deleterious effects in different liver tissues of ducks. The results indicated that mRNA levels of Cas-3, Cas-9, p53, Apaf-1, Bax and Cyt-c were increased in treated ducks with significantly higher mRNA level of Cas-9 and lower levels of the mRNA level of Bcl-2 as compared to untreated control group (P

The beetle Ophraella communa is an effective biological control agent against the invasive common ragweed spread across various ecosystems with variable temperature ranges. The trend in climate change attributed to fluctuating temperatures and abrupt rainfalls is expected to continue. This study aimed to better understand the effects of thermal fluctuation on O. communa by exposing all their life stages to heat stress under different treatments. Repeated exposure to high temperatures, relative to constant milder temperatures, increased the duration of immature development, mean generation time, and the adult longevity, decreased the intrinsic rate of increase, finite rate of population increase, net reproductive rate, survival rate, overall longevity, body length, and mass of adults and positively affected overall fecundity by prolonging the oviposition period, biasing sex ratio towards females. After exposure to heat stress, the mating success and production of viable offspring were higher in O. communa. Our findings demonstrate that exposure to heat stress negatively affects ragweed beetles, but they were able to survive and reproduce.

Various land degradation processes have led to land productivity reduction, food insecurity and ecosystem destruction. The Loess Plateau (LP) suffered from severe land degradation, such as vegetation degradation, soil erosion and desertification. This study assessed land degradation changes by considering different land degradation types including vegetation degradation, soil erosion, aridity, loss of soil organic carbon and desertification in the Huangfuchuan watershed of the northern LP. A comprehensive land degradation index (LDI) was developed by combining different degradation processes using the fuzzy logic modeling method. Our results showed significant land use transitions from bare land and sandy area to grass land and forest land from 1990 to 2018, which were consistent with an obvious increase in vegetation cover from 31.24% to 40.72%. The soil erosion rate predicted by the RUSLE model decreased by 51.95% during 1990–2018. The basin-average LDI decreased from 0.68 in 1990 to 0.51 in 2018, suggesting the great success of land degradation prevention in a fragile ecological environment region on the LP during the past decades. This study proposed an integrated framework for land degradation assessment in the high erodible area. The results can provide good references for the improvement of ecological environment in the future.

Royal jelly (RJ) is a natural bee product that contains a variety of biologically active ingredients and has antitumor, antiallergic, antibacterial and immune-regulating effects. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestine that can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. With this study, we aimed to explore the protective effect of RJ on DSS-induced colitis in mice. The physiochemical parameters (water, protein, 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid, total sugar, starch, ash and acidity) of the RJ samples used in this study met the requirements of the international and Chinese national standards. Treatment with RJ improved symptoms and colonic cell apoptosis and decreased intestinal permeability by increasing the expression of tight-junction protein, goblet cells and their secretion mucin, MUC2, in DSS-induced ulcerative colitis mice. RJ also reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 and increased the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and sIgA. DSS resulted in an increase in the relative abundance of Parabacteroides, Erysipelotrichaceae, Proteobacteria (Gammaproteobacteria, Enterobacteriales and Enterobacteriaceae) and Escherichia Shigella in the colon and a decrease in the relative abundance of Muribaculum. In the RJ treatment group, the relative abundance of the above intestinal flora was improved by treatment with 2.0 g/kg RJ. These results suggested that RJ alleviated DSS-induced colitis by improving the colonic mucosal barrier.

Agasicles hygrophila is a classical biological agent used to control alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides). Previous research has indicated that the heat shock factor (HSF) is involved in regulating the transcriptional expression of Hsp70 in response to heat resistance in A. hygrophila. However, the regulatory mechanism by which AhHsf regulates the expression of AhHsp70 remains largely unknown. Here, we identified and cloned a 944 bp AhHsp70 promoter (AhHsp70p) region from A. hygrophila. Subsequent bioinformatics analysis revealed that the AhHsp70p sequence contains multiple functional elements and has a common TATA box approximately 30 bp upstream of the transcription start site, with transcription commencing at a purine base approximately 137 bp upstream of ATG. Promoter deletion analyses revealed that the sequence from −944 to −744 bp was the core regulatory region. A dual-luciferase reporter assay indicated that overexpressed AhHsf significantly enhanced the activity of AhHsp70p. Furthermore, qPCR showed that AhHsp70 expression increased with time in Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cells, and AhHsf overexpression significantly upregulated AhHsp70 expression in vitro. Characterization of the upstream regulatory mechanisms demonstrated that AhHsf binds to upstream cis-acting elements in the promoter region of AhHsp70 from −944 to −744 bp to activate the AhHSF–AhHSP pathway at the transcriptional level to protect A. hygrophila from high temperature damage. Furthermore, we proposed a molecular model of AhHsf modulation of AhHsp70 transcription following heat shock in A. hygrophila. The findings of this study suggest that enhancing the heat tolerance of A. hygrophila by modulating the upstream pathways of the Hsp family can improve the biocontrol of A. philoxeroides.

The position of the chromatin opening of Bemisia tabaci undergoes significant changes under different temperature stresses, and numerous regulatory factors have been found. In this study, we verified two key factors, cytochrome P450 4C1 and carbonic anhydrase 3. The results showed that invasive whiteflies had a significantly lower heat resistance after silencing BtCYP 4C1 and BtCar3. In addition, whiteflies had a higher cold tolerance after silencing BtCYP 4C1. These results indicate that BtCYP 4C1 and BtCar3 are key regulators in the temperature adaptation of B. tabaci. Moreover, they may be key factors in influencing the geographical distribution and dispersal of B. tabaci as an invasive species in China.
