Abstract Wearable sensors have attracted considerable interest due to their ability to detect a variety of information generated by human physiological activities through physical and chemical means. The performance of wearable sensors is limited by their stability, and endowing wearable sensors with superhydrophobicity is one of the means to enable them to maintain excellent performance in harsh environments. This review emphasizes the imperative progress in flexible superhydrophobic sensors for wearable devices. Besides, the wettability principle and the mechanism of wearable sensors are briefly introduced to propose the combination of superhydrophobicity and wearable sensors. Next, superhydrophobic substrates for wearable sensors, including but not limited to, polydimethylsiloxane, polyurethane, gel, rubber, and fabric, are described in depth, and also the respective fabrication processes and performances. Moreover, the utility of superhydrophobic wearable sensors in a normal intelligent environment is described, highlighting their application in monitoring physiological signals, such as physical movement, pulse, vibration, temperature, perspiration, respiration, and so on. Finally, this review evaluates the challenges and dilemmas that wearable sensors must be overcome for further development and improve the functional performance of wearable sensors, paving the way for their expansion into advanced wearable sensing systems.

The biological structures of Odontodactylus scyllarus, Gampsocleis grafiosa and Procambarus clarkia have interesting functions. They provide valuable inspiration for creating multi-bionic surface microstructure on Al2O3/TiC cutting tool. The microstructure is expected to effectively improve performance and reliability. This work analyzed performance and reliability of Al2O3/TiC cutting tool with multi-bionic microstructure in intermittent dry turning of AISI 52100 hardened steel. It was found that the dimension and the shape of the multi-bionic surface microstructure were greatly affected by the heat source intensity of the laser pulse. The cumulative damage Dcm of tool was negatively correlated with the fractal dimension Fmca obtained for laser-caused microscopic crack. The correlation coefficient was found to be −0.8635. On the contrary, the fracture toughness KICM was positively correlated with Fmca. The correlation coefficient had a value of 0.8731. A theoretical performance metric Pm was put forward for the tool by fusing tool stress, material damage and fracture toughness. The theoretical performance metric Pm was verified by the experimental tool life. Both tool performance and tool reliability were enhanced by using the proposed surface microstructure. Moreover, the optimum tool performance and the highest tool reliability arose simultaneously when the laser angle was 75°. Tool performance and tool reliability can be separately enhanced by 57% and 63% at this laser angle.

Virtual reality based physical stress (VRPS) paradigms could eliminate the influence of social factors on participants, and it may be a desirable tool to explore the impact of personality traits on stress levels. In this study, we attempt to explore the effects of VRPS on stress response among individuals with different personality traits. Forty male participants with an average age of 22.79 ± 0.41 years were divided into two groups based on Harm Avoidance (HA) scores of Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ), referred to as the Low-HA group and the High-HA group. The stress levels of the participants were assessed using salivary α-amylase (sAA) activity and heart rate variability (HRV) indices pre- and post-stress. The influence of personality traits on stress response among different groups was analyzed. VRPS significantly affected the sAA activity and HRV indicators of both groups. During and after stress, there were significant differences in sAA activity and HRV indicators between the two groups. The sAA levels and HRV indices of the Low-HA group were lower than those of the High-HA group. Furthermore, sAA levels and HRV indices were correlated with the scores of TPQ. VRPS scenarios elicit different stress responses on individuals with different harm avoidance personality traits. Stress evaluation based on VR scenarios presents potential in personality trait assessments, particularly for distinguishing between individuals with low and high HA tendencies.

The utilization of magnetic nanofluids as the base carrier liquid proves to be an effective strategy for enhancing the stability of magnetorheological fluids. However, the preparation method for bidispersed magnetorheological fluids still deserves further investigation. In this study, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized through chemical co-precipitation, and aviation hydraulic oil-based magnetic nanofluids were prepared using myristic acid as a surfactant. Micron-sized particles, modified with the same surfactant, were dispersed into the magnetic nanofluids, resulting in a novel bidisperse magnetorheological fluid (C-MRFF). The coated particles underwent physical phase analysis and magnetic property testing through an x-ray diffractometer, Fourier infrared spectrometer, transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, and vibrating sample magnetometer. Due to the addition of nanoparticles, C-MRFFs exhibited superior stability to micron-sized particle-based magnetorheological fluids. They demonstrated the best sedimentation stability and redispersibility at a 9% mass fraction of nanoparticles. Thanks to the protection of the micron-sized particle surface coating, C-MRFFs displayed superior sedimentation stability to traditional bidisperse magnetorheological fluids over a wide temperature range. The magnetorheological properties of C-MRFFs were studied. The results indicated that the yield stress of C-MRFFs increased with increasing magnetic field strength or decreasing temperature. The increase in the mass fraction of nanoparticles was beneficial to the increase in yield stress until severe settling of C-MRFFs occurred. In comparison to micron-sized particle-based magnetorheological fluids, C-MRFFs exhibited higher yield stresses. Although the yield stress of C-MRFFs was slightly lower than that of traditional bidisperse magnetorheological fluids due to the surface coating of larger particles, they exhibited stronger shear resistance over a wide temperature range.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential micronutrient required for various biological processes but excess exposure to Mn can cause neurotoxicity. However, there are few reports regarding the toxicity effect of Mn on the kidney as well as the underlying molecule mechanism. Herein, in vivo experiments were adopted to assess the toxicity effects associated with Mn, and found that chronic Mn treatment induced the injury of glomerular podocytes but not renal tubule in rats. Genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 knockout screen was then employed to explore the biotargets of the toxic effect of Mn on podocytes. Through functional analyses of the enriched candidate genes, NLRP10 was found to be significantly up-regulated and mediated Mn-induced podocyte apoptosis. Further mechanism investigation revealed that NLRP10 expression was regulated by demethylase AlkB homolog 5 (ALKBH5) in an m6A-dependent fashion upon Mn treatment. Moreover, Mn could directly bind to Metadherin (MTDH) and promoted its combination with ALKBH5 to promote NLRP10 expression and cell apoptosis. Finally, logistic regressions, restricted cubic spline regressions and uniform cubic B-spline were used to investigate the association between Mn exposure and the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). A U-shaped nonlinear relationship between CKD risk and plasma Mn level, and a positive linear relationship between CKD risk and urinary Mn levels was found in our case-control study. To sum up, our findings illustrated that m6A-dependent NLRP10 regulation is indispensable for podocyte apoptosis and nephrotoxicity induced by Mn, providing fresh insight into understanding the health risk of Mn and a novel target for preventing renal injury in Mn-intoxicated patients.

KR (Kanbara Reaction) desulfurization slag is a solid waste that is not sufficiently utilized. This is because the KR desulfurization slag contains 1–2.5% sulfur, which is directly used in steel smelting to increase the sulfur content in molten steel. Therefore, the possibility of oxidation desulfurization of KR desulfurization slag was studied in this study. Experiments were conducted to investigate the possibility of removing sulfur from used KR (Kambara Reaction) slag with oxidation. The KR slag samples were treated with oxidative desulfurization in the oxygen partial pressure range of 0.05 bar–1.00 bar, with a gas flow rate ranging from 2 L min−1 to 6 L min−1, and at a temperature of 1420 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), an infrared carbon sulfur analyzer, and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM–EDS) analysis were used to reveal the oxidative desulfurization mechanism of KR desulfurization slag. At low oxygen pressure (PO2 < 0.20 bar), the desulfurization rate of slag oxidized for 120 min increased with the increase in oxygen partial pressure. At high oxygen pressure (PO2 ≥ 0.20 bar), the desulfurization rate of slag samples did not change with the change in oxygen partial pressure, and the desulfurization rate was higher than 93.5%. At low oxygen pressure (PO2 < 0.20 bar), the residual sulfur in the slag after oxidation still existed in the slag as the CaS phase. At high oxygen pressure (PO2 ≥ 0.20 bar), the residual sulfur in the slag oxidized from the CaS phase to the 11CaO·7Al2O3·CaS phase in the slag. The sulfur removal rate was directly correlated with the slag surface area and the flow rate of the reaction gas, and it increased with an increase in both surface area and gas flow rate.

Drought monitoring is crucial for assessing and mitigating the impacts of water scarcity on various sectors and ecosystems. Although traditional drought monitoring relies on soil moisture data, remote sensing technology has have significantly augmented the capabilities for drought monitoring. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of two temperature vegetation drought indices (TVDI), TVDINDVI and TVDIEVI, constructed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) vegetation indices for drought monitoring. Using Guangdong Province as a case, enhanced versions of these indices, developed through Savitzky–Golay filtering and terrain correction were employed. Additionally, Pearson correlation analysis and F-tests were utilized to determine the suitability of the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) in correlation with TVDINDVI and TVDIEVI. In recent years, the mined-out area resulting in more than 20 goaf collapse disasters in the north Pizhou, Jiangsu Province. The traditional monitoring method of surface soil deformation is difficult to meet the requirement of advance prediction of surface subsidence. In order to solve the lack of monitoring and early warning mechanism of mined-out subsidence in gypsum mining area, a monitoring and early warning system based on fiber sensing technology was developed in this area. According to the results of preliminary investigation, analysis and numerical simulation, the ground collapse mechanism of gypsum mine is deduced, dynamic monitoring of groundwater level, displacement of deep rock and soil mass and microseismic monitoring of bottom aquifer above loose layer were monitored by optical fiber sensor, in the course of monitoring, the alarm will be triggered when the fluctuation of water level and the displacement of rock and soil suddenly exceed the normal fluctuation value or when a strong vibration signal is received, and the effective early warning will be carried out in the early stage of the ground collapse, and can provide adequate lead time for disaster prevention and mitigation efforts. Through the implementation of monitoring and early-warning work, the validity of these monitoring and early-warning means has been verified, which can provide data basis and scientific basis for the monitoring, prediction and prevention of ground subsidence in mining areas, it can also provide reference for prevention, control, monitoring and early warning of ground collapse geological disaster in gypsum mine and other similar conditions.

Abstract Nanomaterials (NMs) have received considerable attention in the field of agrochemicals due to their special properties, such as small particle size, surface structure, solubility and chemical composition. The application of NMs and nanotechnology in agrochemicals dramatically overcomes the defects of conventional agrochemicals, including low bioavailability, easy photolysis, and organic solvent pollution, etc. In this review, we describe advances in the application of NMs in chemical pesticides and fertilizers, which are the two earliest and most researched areas of NMs in agrochemicals. Besides, this article concerns with the new applications of NMs in other agrochemicals, such as bio-pesticides, nucleic acid pesticides, plant growth regulators (PGRs), and pheromone. We also discuss challenges and the industrialization trend of NMs in the field of agrochemicals. Constructing nano-agrochemical delivery system via NMs and nanotechnology facilitates the improvement of the stability and dispersion of active ingredients, promotes the precise delivery of agrochemicals, reduces residual pollution and decreases labor cost in different application scenarios, which is potential to maintain the sustainability of agricultural systems and improve food security by increasing the efficacy of agricultural inputs. The increasing demand for enhanced osteointegration calls for next-generation polyetheretherketone (PEEK) that can offer fast bone integration. Whether polydopamine (PDA) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) cross-linked coatings could improve osteointegration of PEEK remains unclear. Here, we fabricated a series of PDA and EGCG cross-linked coatings (PE coatings: P2E0.1, P2E0.5, P2E1, and P2E2 coatings) to enhance osteointegration of PEEK. The material characteristics of coatings were studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, micro-BCA tests, and static water contact angle tests. We evaluated the cytotoxicity, cell adhesion, and osteogenic effects of the coatings in vitro. Furthermore, the P2E0.5 coating was selected to coat porous PEEK scaffold to observe osteointegration using micro-computed tomography and histology in a rabbit. The results show that the PE coatings provide phenolic hydroxyl and amino groups and enhanced hydrophilicity of PEEK, especially in the P2E0.5 coating. Several lines of cellular evidence suggest that P2E0.5 coatings exhibit a noncytotoxic and excellent osteogenic effect. Compared with PEEK, the P2E0.5-coated PEEK shows higher values of bone volume, trabecular number, and trabecular thickness. This study suggests that the PE coating is a promising candidate for surface modification of PEEK and may lay the foundation for further application of PE coatings in clinical practice.

Airflow in a multi-zone building can be a major cause of pollutant transfer, excessive energy consumption, and occupants discomfort. The key to monitoring airflows and mitigating related problems is to obtain a comprehensive understanding of pressure relationships within the buildings. This study proposes a visualization method for representing pressure distribution within a multi-zone building by using a novel pressure-sensing system. The system consists of a Master device and a couple of Slave devices that are connected with each other by a wireless sensor network. A 4-story office building and a 49-story residential building were installed with the system to detect pressure variations. The spatial and numerical mapping relationships of each zone were further determined through grid-forming and coordinate-establishing processes for the building floor plan. Lastly, 2D and 3D visualized pressure mappings of each floor were generated, illustrating the pressure difference and spatial relationship between adjacent zones. It is expected that the pressure mappings derived from this study will allow building operators to intuitively perceive the pressure variations and the spatial layouts of the zones. These mappings also make it possible for operators to diagnose the differences in pressure conditions between adjacent zones and plan a control scheme for the HVAC system more efficiently.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the major psychiatric disorders that is characterized by recurrent episodes of depression and mania (or hypomania), leading to seriously adverse outcomes with unclear pathogenesis. There is an underlying relationship between bacterial communities residing in the gut and brain function, which together form the gut-brain axis (GBA). Recent studies have shown that changes in the gut microbiota have been observed in a large number of BD patients, so the axis may play a role in the pathogenesis of BD. This review summarizes briefly the relationship between the GBA and brain function, the composition and changes of gut microbiota in patients with BD, and further explores the potential role of GBA-related pathway in the pathogenesis of BD as well as the limitations in this field at present in order to provide new ideas for the future etiology research and drug development.

Tetratricopeptide repeat and ankyrin repeat containing 1 (TRANK1) is a robust risk gene of bipolar disorder (BD). However, little is known on the role of TRANK1 in the pathogenesis of BD and whether the gut microbiota is capable of regulating TRANK1 expression. In this study, we first investigated the serum mRNA level of TRANK1 in medication-free patients with a depressive episode of BD, then a mice model was constructed by fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to explore the effects of gut microbiota on brain TRANK1 expression and neuroinflammation, which was further verified by in vitro Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment in BV-2 microglial cells and neurons. 22 patients with a depressive episode and 28 healthy individuals were recruited. Serum level of TRANK1 mRNA was higher in depressed patients than that of healthy controls. Mice harboring ‘BD microbiota’ following FMT presented depression-like phenotype. mRNA levels of inflammatory cytokines and TRANK1 were elevated in mice hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. In vitro, LPS treatment activated the secretion of pro-inflammatory factors in BV-2 cells, which was capable of upregulating the neuronal expression of TRANK1 mRNA. Moreover, primary cortical neurons transfected with plasmid Cytomegalovirus DNA (pcDNA3.1(+)) vector encoding human TRANK1 showed decreased dendritic spine density. Together, these findings add new evidence to the microbiota-gut-brain regulation in BD, indicating that microbiota is possibly involved in the neuropathogenesis of BD by modulating the expression of TRANK1.

In order to solve the problems of blocking the drainage ditch and reducing the soil flatness caused by soil accumulation when using compound planter with plowshare to ditch, a spiral soil separation mechanism (SSSM) is designed. The SSSM is analyzed. In order to obtain the optimal parameters of the SSSM, based on the discrete element method, the multifactor test is carried out with the embedded depth, pitch, and rotation speed of the spiral blade as the test factors and the soil separation distance and uniformity as the evaluation index. The optimal parameters are the embedded depth 49 mm, pitch 331 mm, and rotation speed of the spiral blade 318 r min−1. The field experiment is carried out with these parameters, with soil separation distance 900 mm and standard deviation of soil height 7.8 mm, which is consistent with the simulation results. No blockage of drainage ditch was found, which shows that this device can effectively solve the problem. This study can provide a reference for the design of soil separation equipment using spiral soil separation device.

In this study, pyraclostrobin nanocapsules were prepared by in situ polymerization with urea–formaldehyde resin as a wall material. The effects of different emulsifiers, emulsifier concentrations, and solvents on the physicochemical properties of pyraclostrobin nanocapsules were investigated. Solvesso™ 100 was selected as the solvent, and Emulsifier 600# was used as the emulsifier, which accounted for 5% of the aqueous phase system, to prepare pyraclostrobin nanocapsules with excellent physical and chemical properties. The particle size, ζ potential, and morphology of the nanocapsules were characterized by a particle size analyzer and transmission electron microscope. The nanocapsules were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and the loading content and sustained release properties of the nanocapsules were measured. The results show that the size of the prepared nanocapsules was 261.87 nm, and the polydispersity index (PDI) was 0.12, presenting a uniform spherical appearance. The loading content of the pyraclostrobin nanocapsules was 14.3%, and their cumulative release rate was 70.99% at 250 h, providing better efficacy and sustainability compared with the pyraclostrobin commercial formulation.
