Abstract

It is self‐evident that our chests expand and contract during breathing but, surprisingly, exactly how individual alveoli change shape over the respiratory cycle is still a matter of debate. Some argue that all the alveoli expand and contract rhythmically. Others claim that the lung volume change is due to groups of alveoli collapsing and reopening during ventilation. Although this question might seem to be an insignificant detail for healthy individuals, it might be a matter of life and death for patients with compromised lungs. Past analyses were based on static post‐mortem preparations primarily due to technological limitations, and therefore, by definition, incapable of providing dynamic information. In contrast, this study provides the first comprehensive dynamic data on how the shape of the alveoli changes, and, further, provides valuable insights into the optimal lung volume for efficient gas exchange. It is concluded that alveolar micro‐dynamics is nonlinear; and at medium lung volume, alveoli expand more than the ducts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Since 2020, synchrotron radiation facilities in several Asia-Pacific countries have been collaborating in a major project called "SYNAPSE"(Synchrotrons for Neuroscience: an Asia-Pacific Scientific Enterprise). They use x-ray imaging to attack in a coordinated fashion one of the major issues in modern science: the structure of animal and human brains, including neurons and connections. The objective is to develop Google-like maps also including detailed structural and functional information for selected regions of interest. The sheer mass of data needed for the objective poses huge problems for the acquisition, processing, storage and use of images. In order to complete the task within a reasonable time, the key element of the SYNAPSE strategy is the parallel and coordinated work of several facilities on the same specimens. This article reviews different aspects of the enterprise, including the foundations of synchrotron radiation, coherence and of its role in advanced imaging, electron accelerators, x-ray optics and detectors. This will provide the foundation for an extensive presentation of the different components of SYNAPSE, with an overview of results already obtained within the consortium.

8. Vapor Mapping in a Microscopic Space with a Scanning Nanoprobe Interferometer

Abstract

Evaporation of a liquid inside a microscopic space plays a key role to drive various natural phenomena or chemical/thermal processes in microfluidic systems. So far, fundamental studies in such fields have been indirect due to the lack of techniques geometrically accessible in microscopic spaces. Here, we report on a nanoprobe interferometer that can directly visualize vapor in 3D (dimensions) in a microscopic space. We first optimize the tip geometry of the nanoprobe to enhance its sensitivity just by analyzing the interference patterns during the nanoprobe growth in real time. Based on scanning with the nanoprobe interferometer, vapor concentration from a water meniscus in a glass microcapillary is experimentally mapped, which leads to the measurement of the local evaporation flux from the meniscus. The evaporation flux increases from the capillary center to the wall and decreases with the capillary diameter, mostly due to the Kelvin effect and strong evaporation at the three-phase contact line. Specifically, the flux at the center follows Jv(center)∝ e–7.7×10–4d, in sharp contrast to the power-law decrease reported. Our nanotechnological methodology would pave the way to explore various questions associated with microscopic, geometrically confined evaporation dynamics which has been experimentally inaccessible so far.
