Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to optimize a suitable electrochemical method in evaluating the corrosion rate of structural materials of 20# carbon steel, P280GH carbon steel, 17-4PH stainless steel, 304 stainless steel and Alloy 690TT in high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) water of pressurized water reactor secondary circuit system. Design/methodology/approach: Weight-loss method has been used to obtain the corrosion rate value of each structural material in simulated HTHP water. Besides, linear polarization method and weak polarization curve-based three-point method and four-point method have been compared in obtaining a sound corrosion rate value from the potentiodynamic polarization curve. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope have been used to characterize the microstructure and corrosion morphology of each structural material. Findings: Although there is deviation in gaining the corrosion rate value compared to weight-loss test, the weak polarization curve-based four-point method has been found to be a suitable electrochemical method in gaining corrosion rate value of structural materials in HTHP waters. Originality/value: This paper proposes a suitable and reliable electrochemical method in gaining the corrosion rate value of structural materials in HTHP waters. Biofilms are complex, highly organized structures formed by microorganisms, with functional cell arrangements that allow for intricate communication. Severe clinical challenges occur when anaerobic bacterial species establish long-lasting infections, especially those involving biofilms. These infections can occur in device-related settings (e.g., implants) as well as in non-device-related conditions (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease). Within biofilms, bacterial cells communicate by producing and detecting extracellular signals, particularly through specific small signaling molecules known as autoinducers. These quorum-sensing signals are crucial in all steps of biofilm formation: initial adhesion, maturation, and dispersion, triggering gene expression that coordinates bacterial virulence factors, stimulates immune responses in host tissues, and contributes to antibiotic resistance development. Within anaerobic biofilms, bacteria communicate via quorum-sensing molecules such as N-Acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs), autoinducer-2 (AI-2), and antimicrobial molecules (autoinducing peptides, AIPs). To effectively combat pathogenic biofilms, understanding biofilm formation mechanisms and bacterial interactions is essential. The strategy to disrupt quorum sensing, termed quorum quenching, involves methods like inactivating or enzymatically degrading signaling molecules, competing with signaling molecules for binding sites, or noncompetitively binding to receptors, and blocking signal transduction pathways. In this review, we comprehensively analyzed the fundamental molecular mechanisms of quorum sensing in biofilms formed by anaerobic bacteria. Purpose: The primary objective of this study is to analyze the performance and risk characteristics of portfolios composed of Spanish family businesses (FBs) when sustainability and quality factors are taken into account. By comparing different portfolio compositions against a benchmark, the study aims to provide insights into the impact of these factors on portfolio performance. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs an empirical approach to evaluate the performance and risk of portfolios consisting of Spanish family businesses (FBs) by incorporating sustainability and quality factors. It compares the results of various portfolios against a benchmark, utilizing GARCH models and the extended six-factor model of Fama and French for the period 2018–2023. Findings: The findings reveal that investing in Spanish family businesses (FBs) yields higher returns compared to the index, with portfolios incorporating quality factors demonstrating superior performance. However, the inclusion of sustainability factors negatively affects portfolio performance. These results highlight the significance of considering sustainability and quality factors in portfolio construction and investment decisions. Originality/value: This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the performance and risk implications of incorporating sustainability and quality factors into portfolios of family businesses. The common carp (Cyprinus carpio), a major economic freshwater fish, is suffering from a variety of bacterial infectious diseases because of its high-density, factory and intensive farming patterns. Aeromonas veronii is the causative agent of high mortality in common carp, causing severe economic losses in aquaculture. However, the regulatory mechanisms involved in the response of common carp to this bacterial infection remain poorly understood. In this study, we compared mortality, blood serum LZM (Lysozyme) and IgM (Immunoglobulin M) levels and transcriptome patterns of head kidney tissues after infection with different concentrations of Aeromonas veronii. We observed that mortality increased progressively with an increasing pathogen concentration. The concentrations of blood serum LZM and IgM significantly increased after infection. A total of 13 and 925 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified after infection with low (T4) and high (T9) concentrations of bacterial suspension, respectively. KEGG and GO analyses of the DEGs highlighted multiple immune-related signaling pathways. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed that 136 and 83 hub genes were related to blood serum LZM and IgM, respectively. Finally, the gene expression in the head kidney was validated via RT–qPCR to be consistent with the transcriptome. These results provide insights into the mechanisms of the immune response to infection with different concentrations of Aeromonas veronii and offer useful information for further studies on immune defense mechanisms in common carp. Arctic tidewater glaciers are retreating, serving as key indicators of global warming. This study aims to assess how subglacial hydrology affects glacier front retreat by comparing two glacier–fjord models of the Hansbreen glacier: one incorporating a detailed subglacial hydrology model and another simplifying the subglacial discharge to a single channel centered in the flow line. We first validate the subglacial hydrology model by comparing its discharge channels with observations of plume activity. Simulations conducted from April to December 2010 revealed that the glacier front position aligns more closely with the observations in the coupled model than in the simplified version. Furthermore, the mass loss due to calving and submarine melting is greater in the coupled model, with the calving mass loss reaching 6 Mt by the end of the simulation compared to 4 Mt in the simplified model. These findings highlight the critical role of subglacial hydrology in predicting glacier dynamics and emphasize the importance of detailed modeling in understanding the responses of Arctic tidewater glaciers to climate change. African Swine Fever (ASF) is an infectious disease affecting pigs and wild boars, causing significant economic losses. Epidemiological surveillance plays an important role in minimizing its impact. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of β-actin DNA and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) levels in determining the age of animal remains from the Suidae family, which could be helpful in epidemiological investigations. The study included selected tissues and internal organs of Sus scrofa domesticus, exposed to natural environmental conditions or kept in stable 4 °C conditions, to assess the levels of β-actin and mtDNA over a period of 18 months. The levels of both tested parameters exhibited the expected decreasing trend over time. However, in most tissues, some discrepancies from this general pattern were observed. The results obtained for bone marrow showed a consistent downward trend and a strong correlation between mtDNA and β-actin, with long-term detectability (up to the 13th month of the study). Understanding the pathogenesis and mechanisms of prion diseases can significantly expand our knowledge in the field of neurodegenerative diseases. Prion biology is increasingly recognized as being relevant to the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, both of which affect millions of people each year. This bioinformatics study used a theoretical protein-RNA recognition code (1-L transcription) to reveal the post-transcriptional regulation of the prion protein (PrPC). The principle for this method is directly elucidated on PrPC, in which an octa-repeat can be 1-L transcribed into a GGA triplet repeat RNA aptamer known to reduce the misfolding of normal PrPC into abnormal PrPSc. The identified genes/proteins are associated with mitochondria, cancer, COVID-19 and ER-stress, and approximately half are directly or indirectly associated with prion diseases. Antiviral peptides (AVPs) represent a promising strategy for addressing the global challenges of viral infections and their growing resistances to traditional drugs. Lab-based AVP discovery methods are resource-intensive, highlighting the need for efficient computational alternatives. In this study, we developed five non-trained but supervised multi-query similarity search models (MQSSMs) integrated into the StarPep toolbox. Rigorous testing and validation across diverse AVP datasets confirmed the models' robustness and reliability. The top-performing model, M13+, demonstrated impressive results, with an accuracy of 0.969 and a Matthew's correlation coefficient of 0.71. To assess their competitiveness, the top five models were benchmarked against 14 publicly available machine-learning and deep-learning AVP predictors. The MQSSMs outperformed these predictors, highlighting their efficiency in terms of resource demand and public accessibility. Another significant achievement of this study is the creation of the most comprehensive dataset of antiviral sequences to date. In general, these results suggest that MQSSMs are promissory tools to develop good alignment-based models that can be successfully applied in the screening of large datasets for new AVP discovery. The vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW) is a widely studied combinatorial optimization problem in supply chains and logistics within the last decade. Recent research has explored the potential of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) as a promising solution for the VRPTW. However, the challenge of addressing the VRPTW with many conflicting objectives (MOVRPTW) still remains for DRL. The MOVRPTW considers five conflicting objectives simultaneously: minimizing the number of vehicles required, the total travel distance, the travel time of the longest route, the total waiting time for early arrivals, and the total delay time for late arrivals. To tackle the MOVRPTW, this study introduces the MTMO/DRP-AT, a multi-task multi-objective evolutionary search algorithm, by making full use of both DRL and the multitasking mechanism. In the MTMO/DRL-AT, a two-objective MOVRPTW is constructed as an assisted task, with the objectives being to minimize the total travel distance and the travel time of the longest route. Both the main task and the assisted task are simultaneously solved in a multitasking scenario. Each task is decomposed into scalar optimization subproblems, which are then solved by an attention model trained using DRL. The outputs of these trained models serve as the initial solutions for the MTMO/DRL-AT. Subsequently, the proposed algorithm incorporates knowledge transfer and multiple local search operators to further enhance the quality of these promising solutions. Background: This study aimed to identify the specific areas of knowledge gaps regarding lactose intolerance among neonatologists in Chinese outpatient settings as well as to assess the availability of lactose intolerance testing in hospitals. Methods: A total of 278 neonatologists in outpatient settings from 144 hospitals were surveyed. To explore the awareness level, diagnosis, and treatment of neonatal lactose intolerance among neonatologists in outpatient settings, a multicenter cross-sectional survey was designed. Descriptive analysis based on frequency and percent distribution was performed for all variables. Results: Most respondents were senior doctors (256, 92.09%) from general hospitals and maternity/maternal and child health hospitals, had over 10 years of experience, and were dominantly associate chief physicians and chief physicians (211, 75.90%). A significant proportion of the participants (236, 84.89%) believed that neonatal lactose intolerance tends to be overlooked during clinical practice. When the most common symptoms of neonatal lactose intolerance were surveyed, diarrhea was selected by 142 (51.08%) respondents, followed by bloating and milk regurgitation or emesis (71, 25.54%). Other symptoms included unexplained crying (36, 12.85%), stool with milk flap or foam (15, 5.40%), and increased venting (14, 5.04%). Furthermore, the survey results indicated that the most common method for diagnosing neonatal lactose intolerance in the respondents' hospitals was qualitative test for urinary galactose (78, 28.06%). Of the respondents, 137 (49.28%) stated that their hospital could not test for lactose intolerance. For treating lactose intolerance, the neonatologists primarily opted for exogenous lactase rather than lactose-free formula milk. Conclusions: This study sheds light on Chinese neonatologists' awareness of neonatal lactose intolerance, revealing some knowledge gaps. The expeditious popularization and conduct of lactose intolerance-related examinations in hospitals will have a positive stimulative effect on the management of lactose intolerance in newborns. The recycling and recovery of value-added secondary raw materials such as spent Zn/C batteries is crucial to reduce the environmental impact of wastes and to achieve cost-effective and sustainable processing technologies. The aim of this work is to fabricate reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based sorbents with a desulfurization capability using recycled graphite from spent Zn/C batteries as raw material. Recycled graphite was obtained from a black mass recovered from the dismantling of spent batteries by a hydrometallurgical process. Graphene oxide (GO) obtained by the Tour's method was comparable to that obtained from pure graphite. rGO-based sorbents were prepared by doping obtained GO with NiO and ZnO precursors by a hydrothermal route with a final annealing step. Recycled graphite along with the obtained GO, intermediate (rGO-NiO-ZnO) and final composites (rGO-NiO-ZnO-400) were characterized by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (WDXRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) that corroborated the removal of metal impurities from the starting material as well as the presence of NiO- and ZnO-doped reduced graphene oxide. The performance of the prepared composites was evaluated by sulfidation tests under different conditions. The results revealed that the proposed rGO-NiO-ZnO composite present a desulfurization capability similar to that of commercial sorbents which constitutes a competitive alternative to syngas cleaning. In order to contribute to an assessment of the role of food in the risks of transmission of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a review was undertaken of research on this microorganism in milk and dairy products published from January 2001 to February 2024. A total of 186 publications were selected, 125 for dairy products and 61 for bulk-tank milk (BTM). MRSA was detected in 68.8% of the research into dairy products and 73.8% of investigations relating to BTM, although in most studies the prevalence was less than 5%. Of the set of S. aureus strains isolated, approximately 30% corresponded to MRSA. The foods most extensively contaminated with this microorganism were raw milk and some types of soft cheese. Determination of the mecA gene on its own is known not to suffice for the detection of all MRSA strains. The great diversity of techniques used to study MRSA in milk and dairy products made it difficult to draw comparisons between studies. Envenoming resulting from snakebites is recognized as a priority neglected tropical disease by The World Health Organization. The Bothrops genus, consisting of different pitviper species, is considered the most medically significant taxa in Central and South America. Further research into Bothrops venom composition is important to aid in the development of safer and more effective snakebite treatments. In addition, the discovery of Bothrops toxins that could potentially be used for medical or diagnostic purposes is of interest to the pharmaceutical industry. This study aimed to employ high-throughput (HT) venomics to qualitatively analyze venom composition while utilizing coagulation bioassays for identifying coagulopathic toxins and characterizing coagulopathic activity in various Bothrops venoms. Using the recently demonstrated HT venomics workflow in combination with post-column coagulopathic bioassaying, focus was placed at anticoagulant toxins. Well-known procoagulant toxins were also investigated, taking into account that using the HT venomics workflow, procoagulant toxins are especially prone to denaturation during the reversed-phase chromatographic separations performed in the workflow. The findings revealed that the venoms of B. atrox and B. jararaca harbored procoagulant toxins, whereas those of B. alternatus and B. neuwiedi contained both procoagulant and anticoagulant toxins. In general, anticoagulation was associated with phospholipases A2s, while procoagulation was associated with snake venom metalloproteinases and snake venom serine proteases. These results showed the identification of coagulopathic venom toxins in the Bothrops venoms analyzed using multiple analytical methods that complement each other. The changes in the cell physiology (growth rate, cell size, and cell DNA content), photosynthetic efficiency, toxicity, and sexuality under variable light and nutrient (phosphates) conditions were evaluated in cultures of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum obtained from a red tide in the Ría de Vigo (NW Spain). The cells were grown at low (40 and 150 µE m−2 s−1), moderate (400 µE m−2 s−1), and high (800 µE m−2 s−1) light intensities in a medium with phosphate (P+) and without (P−). Cultures were acclimated to the irradiance conditions for one week, and the experiment was run for ~1 month. The cell size and DNA content were monitored via flow cytometry. Two different clonal strains were employed as a monoculture (in a P− or P+ medium) or, to foster sexuality and resting cyst formation, as a mixed culture (only in a P− medium). A. minutum growth was favored by increasing light intensities until 400 µE m−2 s−1. The DNA content analyses indicated the accumulation of S-phase cells at the highest light intensities (400 and 800 µE m−2 s−1) and therefore the negative effects on cell cycle progression. Only when the cells were grown in a P− medium did higher light intensities trigger dose-dependent, significantly higher toxicities in all the A. minutum cultures. This result suggests that the toxicity level is responsive to the combined effects of (high) light and (low) P stress. The cell size was not significantly affected by the light intensity or P conditions. The optimal light intensity for resting cyst formation was 150 µE m−2 s−1, with higher irradiances reducing the total encystment yield. Encystment was not observed at the lowest light intensity tested, indicative of the key role of low-level irradiance in gamete and/or zygote formation, in contrast to the stressor effect of excessive irradiance on planozygote formation and/or encystment. The development of underwater acoustic networks is a significant expansion of Internet-of-Things technology to underwater environments. These networks are essential for a variety of marine applications. For many practical uses, it is more efficient to collect marine data from a remote location over multiple hops, rather than direct point-to-point communications. In this article, we will focus on the underwater acoustic string network (UA-SN) designed for this type of application. We propose a Robust and Adaptive Pipeline Medium Access Control (RAP-MAC) protocol to enhance the network's transmission efficiency, adaptability, and robustness. The protocol includes a scheduling-based concurrent algorithm, online real-time configuration adjustment function, a rate mode adaptive algorithm, and a fault recovery algorithm. We conducted simulations to compare the new protocol with another representative protocol, validating the RAP-MAC protocol's adaptability and fault recovery ability. Additionally, we carried out two large-scale sea trials. The results of these experiments indicate that the RAP-MAC protocol ensures effectiveness and reliability in large-scale multihop UA-SNs. In the South China Sea, we were able to achieve a communication distance of 87 km with a throughput of 601.6 bps, exceeding the recognized upper bound of underwater acoustic communication experiment performance by 40 km·kbps. Dizziness can be a debilitating condition with various causes, with at least one episode reported in 17% to 30% of the international adult population. Given the effectiveness of rehabilitation in treating dizziness and the recent advancements in telerehabilitation, this systematic review aims to investigate the effectiveness of telerehabilitation in the treatment of this disorder. The search, conducted across Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and PEDro databases, included randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of telerehabilitation interventions, delivered synchronously, asynchronously, or via tele-support/monitoring. Primary outcomes focused on dizziness frequency/severity and disability, with secondary outcomes assessing anxiety and depression measures. Seven articles met the eligibility criteria, whereas five articles contributed to the meta-analysis. Significant findings were observed regarding the frequency and severity of dizziness (mean difference of 3.01, p < 0.001), disability (mean difference of −4.25, p < 0.001), and anxiety (standardized mean difference of −0.16, p = 0.02), favoring telerehabilitation. Telerehabilitation shows promise as a treatment for dizziness, aligning with the positive outcomes seen in traditional rehabilitation studies. However, the effectiveness of different telerehabilitation approaches requires further investigation, given the moderate methodological quality and the varied nature of existing methods and programs. Amid growing concerns about antibiotic resistance, innovative strategies are imperative in addressing bacterial infections in aquaculture. Quorum quenching (QQ), the enzymatic inhibition of quorum sensing (QS), has emerged as a promising solution. This study delves into the QQ capabilities of the probiotic strain Bacillus velezensis D-18 and its products, particularly in Vibrio anguillarum 507 communication and biofilm formation. Chromobacterium violaceum MK was used as a biomarker in this study, and the results confirmed that B. velezensis D-18 effectively inhibits QS. Further exploration into the QQ mechanism revealed the presence of lactonase activity by B. velezensis D-18 that degraded both long- and short-chain acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs). PCR analysis demonstrated the presence of a homologous lactonase-producing gene, ytnP, in the genome of B. velezensis D-18. The study evaluated the impact of B. velezensis D-18 on V. anguillarum 507 growth and biofilm formation. The probiotic not only controls the biofilm formation of V. anguillarum but also significantly restrains pathogen growth. Therefore, B. velezensis D-18 demonstrates substantial potential for preventing V. anguillarum diseases in aquaculture through its QQ capacity. The ability to disrupt bacterial communication and control biofilm formation positions B. velezensis D-18 as a promising eco-friendly alternative to conventional antibiotics in managing bacterial diseases in aquaculture. The sensor response of pressure-sensitive conductive elastomers using polymeric materials can be adjusted by altering the type and quantity of fillers used during manufacturing. Another method involves modifying the surface shape of the elastomer. This study investigates the sensor response by altering the surface shape of an electrode using a readily available pressure-sensitive conductive elastomer. By employing an oxygen-free copper electrode with a flat surface (with surface roughness parameters Ra = 0.064 μm and Rz = 0.564 μm) as a baseline, we examined the sensor system's characteristics. Electrodes were fabricated with triangular wave concavo-convex surfaces, featuring tip angles of 60, 90, and 120°. Improved sensor responses were observed with electrodes having tip angles of 60 and 90°. Additionally, even with varying conductive properties of elastomers, the conductance of the elastomer sensor increased similarly when using an electrode with a 90° tip angle. This study demonstrates the potential for expanding the applications of conductive elastomer sensors, highlighting the noteworthy improvement in sensor response and performance achieved by altering the surface shape of electrodes used with commercially available conductive elastomers. Simple Summary: The duration of pupa development on a cadaver holds the potential for estimating the time of colonization (TOC), which is often correlated with the postmortem interval (PMI) of decomposed bodies. Establishing an objective, precise, and efficient method for inferring pupa age has become paramount in forensic entomology. In this study, we observed temporal variations in the reflection spectrum of Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae) pupa, detectable through hyperspectral imaging (HSI). Additionally, we proposed that the eXtreme Gradient Boosting Regression (XGBR) model represents an optimal approach for estimating pupa development time based on HSI data. Estimating the age of pupa during the development time of the blow fly Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is of forensic significance as it assists in determining the time of colonization (TOC), which could help to determine the postmortem interval (PMI). However, establishing an objective, accurate, and efficient method for pupa age inference is still a leading matter of concern among forensic entomologists. In this study, we utilized hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology to analyze the reflectance changes of pupa development under different temperatures (15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C). The spectrograms showed a downtrend under all temperatures. We used PCA to reduce the dimensionality of the spectral data, and then machine learning models (RF, SVR-RBF, SVR-POLY, XGBR, and Lasso) were built. RF, SVR with RBF kernel, and XGBR could show promise in accurate developmental time estimation using accumulated degree days. Among these, the XGBR model consistently exhibited the most minor errors, ranging between 3.9156 and 7.3951 (MAE). This study has identified the value of further refinement of HSI in forensic applications involving entomological specimens, and identified the considerable potential of HSI in forensic practice. This study aimed to characterize 300 Aeromonas spp. strains isolated from 123 ornamental fish of 32 different species presenting with septicemia, skin lesions, and/or eye lesions. Within the 300 strains, 53.0% were identified as A. veronii, 41.3% as A. hydrophila, and 5.7% as A. caviae. Among the six virulence genes investigated, the most frequent were act (90.3%) and aer (79.3%). More than 50% of A. hydrophila strains were positive for all the studied genes. A total of 30 virulence profiles were identified, with the five main profiles identified comprising 75% of strains. Only five strains were negative for all genes and were identified as A. caviae and A. veronii. The antimicrobial susceptibility profile was performed for 234 strains, with sulfonamides presenting more than 50% of the resistance rates. Susceptibility was observed mainly for cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol and piperacillin-tazobactam. Multidrug resistance was detected in 82.5% of the studied strains, including A. caviae with 100% multidrug resistance, and A. hydrophila with 90.9% multidrug resistance. The SE-AFLP analysis resulted in 66 genotypes of A. hydrophila, 118 genotypes of A. veronii, and 14 genotypes of A. caviae, demonstrating the greater heterogeneity of A. veronii and A. caviae. Scorpions are ancient and historically renowned for their potent venom. Traditionally, the systematics of this group of arthropods was supported by morphological characters, until recent phylogenomic analyses (using RNAseq data) revealed most of the higher‐level taxa to be non‐monophyletic. While these phylogenomic hypotheses are stable for almost all lineages, some nodes have been hard to resolve due to minimal taxonomic sampling (e.g. family Chactidae). In the same line, it has been shown that some nodes in the Arachnid Tree of Life show disagreement between hypotheses generated using transcritptomes and other genomic sources such as the ultraconserved elements (UCEs). Here, we compared the phylogenetic signal of transcriptomes vs. UCEs by retrieving UCEs from new and previously published scorpion transcriptomes and genomes, and reconstructed phylogenies using both datasets independently. We reexamined the monophyly and phylogenetic placement of Chactidae, sampling an additional chactid species using both datasets. Our results showed that both sets of genome‐scale datasets recovered highly similar topologies, with Chactidae rendered paraphyletic owing to the placement of Nullibrotheas allenii. Despite advancements in assisted reproductive technology (ART), achieving successful pregnancy rates remains challenging. Diminished ovarian reserve and premature ovarian insufficiency hinder IVF success—about 20% of in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients face a poor prognosis due to a low response, leading to higher cancellations and reduced birth rates. In an attempt to address the issue of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), we conducted systematic PubMed and Web of Science research, using keywords "stem cells", "extracellular vesicles", "premature ovarian insufficiency", "diminished ovarian reserve" and "exosomes". Amid the complex ovarian dynamics and challenges like POI, stem cell therapy and particularly the use of extracellular vesicles (EVs), a great potential is shown. EVs trigger paracrine mechanisms via microRNAs and bioactive molecules, suppressing apoptosis, stimulating angiogenesis and activating latent regenerative potential. Key microRNAs influence estrogen secretion, proliferation and apoptosis resistance. Extracellular vesicles present a lot of possibilities for treating infertility, and understanding their molecular mechanisms is crucial for maximizing EVs' therapeutic potential in addressing ovarian disorders and promoting reproductive health. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global issue affecting public and animal health. The overuse of antibiotics in human health, animal production, agriculture, and aquaculture has led to the selection of antibiotic-resistant strains, particularly in Gram-negative bacteria. Mutations and horizontal gene transfer play a significant role in the development of antimicrobial resistance, leading to the reduced efficacy of current antibiotics. Today, AMR in bacteria and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) are increasingly recognized in multiple environmental sources, including recreational and irrigation waters. This study aims to identify Gram-negative bacteria from surface aquatic reservoirs in southern Chile and assess their susceptibility to clinically relevant antibiotics. Water samples were collected from four lakes, five rivers, one waterfall, and one watershed in southern Chile to isolate environmental Gram-negative bacilli (GNB). API-20E and MALDI–TOF were employed for bacterial identification. Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion tests and multiplex PCR were performed to determine their susceptibility profile. A total of 26 GNB strains were isolated from environmental water samples, predominantly belonging to the Pseudomonas (n = 9) and Acinetobacter (n = 7) genera. Among these strains, 96.2% were resistant to ampicillin and cefazoline, while 26.9% and 34.6% showed resistance to ceftazidime and cefepime, respectively. Additionally, 38.5% exhibited resistance to colistin. Two Enterobacter cloacae strains obtained from Cachapoal River (sixth region) and Villarrica Lake (ninth region), respectively, presented a multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotype and carried at least two extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes. Thus, antibiotic-resistant GNB and ARGs were found in natural water reservoirs, raising concerns about the dissemination of resistance determinants among potentially pathogenic bacteria in environmental microbial communities. It is now understood that invasion, metastasis, and treatment resistance associated with BRCA progression are not exclusively due to breast tumor cells but are from the intricate interplay between BRCA and its tumor microenvironment (TME). Accordingly, understanding the pathogenesis and evolution of the TPBC microenvironment demands a comprehensive approach. Moreover, addressing BRCA treatment necessitates a holistic consideration of the TME, bearing significant implications for identifying novel targets for anticancer interventions. Colombia encompasses three mountain ranges that divide the country into five natural regions: Andes, Pacific, Caribbean, Amazon, and Orinoquia. These regions offer an impressive range of climates, altitudes, and landscapes, which lead to a high snake biodiversity. Of the almost 300 snake species reported in Colombia, nearly 50 are categorized as venomous. This high diversity of species contrasts with the small number of studies to characterize their venom compositions and natural history in the different ecoregions. This work reviews the available information about the venom composition, isolated toxins, and potential applications of snake species found in Colombia. Data compilation was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines, and the systematic literature search was carried out in Pubmed/MEDLINE. Venom proteomes from nine Viperidae and three Elapidae species have been described using quantitative analytical strategies. In addition, venoms of three Colubridae species have been studied. Bioactivities reported for some of the venoms or isolated components—such as antibacterial, cytotoxicity on tumoral cell lines, and antiplasmodial properties—may be of interest to develop potential applications. Overall, this review indicates that, despite recent progress in the characterization of venoms from several Colombian snakes, it is necessary to perform further studies on the many species whose venoms remain essentially unexplored, especially those of the poorly known genus Micrurus. The pressure-sensing mechanisms of conductive elastomers, such as conductive networks, and tunneling effects within them have been extensively studied. However, it has become apparent that external pressure can significantly impact the contact area of polymeric materials. In this study, we will employ a commercially available conductive elastomer to investigate changes in resistance and contact surface under external pressure. Resistance measurements will be taken with and without applying conductive grease to the surface of the elastomer. This allows us to observe changes in resistance values associated with pressure variations. Furthermore, as pressure is applied to the conductive elastomer, the contact area ratio increases. The potential risk to human and animal health provides a rationale for research on methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS) and mammaliicocci (MRM) in dairy herds. Here, we aimed to estimate their occurrence in the bulk tank milk (BTM) samples collected in 2019–2021 from 283 bovine dairy farms in the Belgrade district. We used whole-genome sequencing to characterize the obtained isolates and assess their genetic relatedness. A total of 70 MRS/MRM were recovered, most frequently Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Mammaliicoccus sciuri. Five clusters of 2–4 genetically related isolates were identified and epidemiological data indicated transmission through, e.g., farm visits by personnel or milk collection trucks. Most MRSA isolates belonged to the typical livestock-associated lineage ST398-t034. One MRSA isolate (ST152-t355) harbored the PVL-encoding genes. Since MRS/MRM isolates obtained in this study frequently harbored genes conferring multidrug resistance (MDR), this argues for their role as reservoirs for the spread of antimicrobial resistance genes. The pipeline milking system and total bacterial count >100,000 CFU/mL were significantly associated with higher occurrences of MRS/MRM. Our study confirms that BTM can be a zoonotic source of MRS, including MDR strains. Nature has always been a source of inspiration for the development of novel materials and devices. In particular, polymer actuators that mimic the movements and functions of natural organisms have been of great interest due to their potential applications in various fields, such as biomedical engineering, soft robotics, and energy harvesting. During recent years, the development and actuation performance of electrospun fibrous meshes with the advantages of high permeability, surface area, and easy functional modification, has received extensive attention from researchers. This review covers the recent progress in the state-of-the-art electrospun actuators based on commonly used polymers such as stimuli-sensitive hydrogels, shape-memory polymers (SMPs), and electroactive polymers. The design strategies inspired by nature such as hierarchical systems, layered structures, and responsive interfaces to enhance the performance and functionality of these actuators, including the role of biomimicry to create devices that mimic the behavior of natural organisms, are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future directions in the field, with a focus on the development of more efficient and versatile electrospun polymer actuators which can be used in a wide range of applications, are addressed. Solving many‐objective optimization problems (MaOPs) by means of evolutionary algorithms obtains considerable attention in the community of evolutionary computation. However, it is a difficult task to effectively handle MaOPs with both regular and irregular Pareto front (PF) shapes. In this paper, a novel two reference vector sets based evolutionary algorithm, referred to as TVEA, is proposed to solve both types of MaOPs. TVEA can be featured as i) two independent reference vector sets are used, where the regular reference vector set is used for the regular PF MaOPs and the irregular one is used for the irregular PF MaOPs; ii) according to the two reference vector sets, TVEA automatically detects the PF shape of a MaOP at hand; iii) a new delete‐and‐add strategy is proposed to adaptively update the irregular reference vector set; iv) a novel environmental selection strategy is developed to handle the irregular PF MaOPs. TVEA is extensively evaluated on 23 benchmark MaOPs with both regular and irregular PF shapes. The results indicate that TVEA can correctly detect the PF shape of MaOPs to be solved. Scorpion venoms have long captivated scientific researchers, primarily due to the potency and specificity of the mechanism of action of their derived components. Among other molecules, these venoms contain highly active compounds, including antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and ion channel-specific components that selectively target biological receptors with remarkable affinity. Some of these receptors have emerged as prime therapeutic targets for addressing various human pathologies, including cancer and infectious diseases, and have served as models for designing novel drugs. Consequently, extensive biochemical and proteomic investigations have focused on characterizing scorpion venoms. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the key methodologies used in the extraction, purification, analysis, and characterization of AMPs and other bioactive molecules present in scorpion venoms. Noteworthy techniques such as gel electrophoresis, reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, and "omics" approaches are explored, along with various combinations of methods that enable bioassay-guided venom fractionation. Furthermore, this review presents four adapted proteomic workflows that lead to the comprehensive dissection of the scorpion venom proteome, with an emphasis on AMPs. These workflows differ based on whether the venom is pre-fractionated using separation techniques or is proteolytically digested directly before further proteomic analyses. Since the composition and functionality of scorpion venoms are species-specific, the selection and sequence of the techniques for venom analyses, including these workflows, should be tailored to the specific parameters of the study. Ranolazine (RN) is a drug used in the treatment of chronic coronary ischemia. Different clinical trials have shown that RN behaves as an anti-diabetic drug by lowering blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. However, RN has not been shown to improve insulin (IN) sensitivity. Our study investigates the possible facilitating effects of RN on the actions of IN in the rabbit aorta. IN induced vasodilation of the abdominal aorta in a concentration-dependent manner, and this dilatory effect was due to the phosphorylation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and the formation of nitric oxide (NO). On the other hand, IN facilitated the vasodilator effects of acetylcholine but not the vasodilation induced by sodium nitroprusside. RN facilitated all the vasodilatory effects of IN. In addition, IN decreased the vasoconstrictor effects of adrenergic nerve stimulation and exogenous noradrenaline. Both effects were in turn facilitated by RN. The joint effect of RN with IN induced a significant increase in the ratio of p-eNOS/eNOS and pAKT/AKT. In conclusion, RN facilitated the vasodilator effects of IN, both direct and induced, on the adrenergic system. Therefore, RN increases vascular sensitivity to IN, thus decreasing tissue resistance to the hormone, a key mechanism in the development of type II diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two‐partner secretion (TPS) systems, also known as Type Vb secretion systems, allow the translocation of effector proteins across the outer membrane of Gram‐negative bacteria. By secreting different classes of effectors, including cytolysins and adhesins, TPS systems play important roles in bacterial pathogenesis and host interactions. Here, we review the current knowledge on TPS systems regulation and highlight specific and common regulatory mechanisms across TPS functional classes. We discuss in detail the specific regulatory networks identified in various bacterial species and emphasize the importance of understanding the context‐dependent regulation of TPS systems. Several regulatory cues reflecting host environment during infection, such as temperature and iron availability, are common determinants of expression for TPS systems, even across relatively distant species. These common regulatory pathways often affect TPS systems across subfamilies with different effector functions, representing conserved global infection‐related regulatory mechanisms. Bullying is an aggressive and repetitive behavior, where one person or several people physically, socially, or emotionally harm a vulnerable person and provokean imbalance of power in a school setting. Several factors such as age, sex, school performance, psychological factors, and ethnicity have been associated with bullying and more are being sought. Thus, the objectives of this study were as follows: (1) analyze the differences in bullying (victimization and aggression) and self-concept (academic, social, emotional, family, and physical) with respect to sex, school location, and educational level among Spanish adolescents; (2) explore the associations of bullying and self-concept with these sociodemographic dimensions. A cross-sectional study was designed with a total of 1155 participants (between 12 and 18 years old); there were 48.8% boys and 51.2% girls, where 75.9% studied compulsory secondary education (CSE) and 24.1% Baccalaureate, and 31.9% were students from rural schools and 68.1% were from urban schools. Medium and inverse correlations were shown between victimization and self-concept at the general level, for both sexes, both types of school, and both educational stages. For the aggression dimension, the correlations with self-concept were inverse at the general level (low), in girls (low), in rural students (medium), and in compulsory secondary education students (medium). For academic self-concept and family self-concept, the associations were medium and inverse with bullying in all variables. For emotional self-concept the correlation with bullying was direct and medium in all variables; in physical self-concept, the correlations with bullying were inverse in almost all variables except in boys. Self-concept may be a protective factor for bullying and interventions should aim at adolescents building a positive multidimensional self-concept that prevents and protects them from bullying either as aggressor or victim. Biofilm formation and antimicrobial resistance pose significant challenges not only in clinical settings (i.e., implant-associated infections, endocarditis, and urinary tract infections) but also in industrial settings and in the environment, where the spreading of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is on the rise. Indeed, developing effective strategies to prevent biofilm formation and treat infections will be one of the major global challenges in the next few years. As traditional pharmacological treatments are becoming inadequate to curb this problem, a constant commitment to the exploration of novel therapeutic strategies is necessary. Light-triggered therapies have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional approaches due to their non-invasive nature, precise spatial and temporal control, and potential multifunctional properties. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the different biofilm formation stages and the molecular mechanism of biofilm disruption, with a major focus on the quorum sensing machinery. Moreover, we highlight the principal guidelines for the development of light-responsive materials and photosensitive compounds. The synergistic effects of combining light-triggered therapies with conventional treatments are also discussed. Through elegant molecular and material design solutions, remarkable results have been achieved in the fight against biofilm formation and antibacterial resistance. However, further research and development in this field are essential to optimize therapeutic strategies and translate them into clinical and industrial applications, ultimately addressing the global challenges posed by biofilm and antimicrobial resistance. Production of renewable fuels from gasification is based on catalytic processes. Deep desulfurization is required to avoid the poisoning of the catalysts. It means the removal of H2S but also of organic sulfur species. Conventional cleaning consists of a several-step complex approach comprising catalytic hydro-treating followed by H2S removal. In this work, a single-stage process using a zinc and nickel oxide sorbent has been investigated for the removal of organic sulfur species present in syngas. The process is called reactive adsorption and comes from the refinery industry. The challenge investigated by CIEMAT was to prove for the first time that the concept is also valid for syngas. We have studied the process at a lab scale. Thiophene and benzothiophene, two of the main syngas organic sulfur compounds, were selected as target species to remove. The experimental study comprised the analysis of the effect of temperature (250–450 °C), pressure (1–10 bar), space velocity (2000–3500 h−1), tar components (toluene), sulfur species (H2S), and syngas components (H2, CO, and full syngas CO/CO2/CH4/H2). Operating conditions for removal of thiophene and benzothiophene were determined. Increasing pressure and temperature had a positive effect, and full conversion was achieved at 450 °C, 10 bar and 3500 h−1, accompanied by simultaneous hydrogen sulfide capture by the sorbent in accordance with the reactive adsorption desulfurization (RADS) process. Space velocity and hydrogen content in the syngas had little effect on desulfurization. Thiophene conversions from 39% to 75% were obtained when feeding synthetic syngas mimicking different compositions, spanning from air to steam-oxygen-blown gasification. Toluene, as a model tar component present in syngas, did not strongly affect the removal of thiophene and benzothiophene. H2S inhibited their conversion, falling, respectively, to 2% and 69% at 350 °C and 30% and 80% at 400 °C under full syngas blends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acromegaly is a rare disease with several systemic complications that may lead to increased overall morbidity and mortality. Despite several available treatments, ranging from transsphenoidal resection of GH-producing adenomas to different medical therapies, complete hormonal control is not achieved in some cases. Some decades ago, estrogens were first used to treat acromegaly, resulting in a significant decrease in IGF1 levels. However, due to the consequent side effects of the high dose utilized, this treatment was later abandoned. The evidence that estrogens are able to blunt GH activity also derives from the evidence that women with GH deficiency taking oral estro-progestins pills need higher doses of GH replacement therapy. In recent years, the role of estrogens and Selective Estrogens Receptor Modulators (SERMs) in acromegaly treatment has been re-evaluated, especially considering poor control of the disease under first- and second-line medical treatment. In this review, we analyze the state of the art concerning the impact of estrogen and SERMs on the GH/IGF1 axis, focusing on molecular pathways and the possible implications for acromegaly treatment. The present paper investigates the failure of SiC and alumina-fiber-reinforced minicomposites in relation to the strength distributions of filaments, and the failure behavior of the reinforcing dry tows. The strength data are measured on single-filament, dry-tow and minicomposite specimens using tensile tests under commonly used test condition of strain-controlled loading. Pertinence of the normal distribution of strengths at different length scales is assessed using the construction of p-quantile diagrams, and the pertinence of the Weibull distribution was assessed by comparing to the normal distribution function. SiC and alumina minicomposites exhibited significantly different failure behaviors. Comparison with filament strength distributions and the behavior of the underlying tow in relation to the loading condition (stress- or strain-controlled conditions) allows for the interpretation of the results. The sensitivity of the results to loading conditions is highlighted. Various scenarios of minicomposite failure are discussed as alternatives to the stress concentration induced by clusters of broken fibers. It appears that the failure of alumina-fiber-reinforced minicomposites is stable and dictated by the highest-strength filaments, whereas the SiC-fiber-reinforced minicomposites exhibited premature failure that is attributed to the microstructural imperfections that induced overstressing by the fiber or fiber/matrix interactions. We have developed a pipeline to express, purify, and characterize HIV envelope protein (Env) gp145 from Chinese hamster ovary cells, to accelerate the production of a promising vaccine candidate. First in shake flasks, then in bioreactors, we optimized the growth conditions. By adjusting the pH to 6.8, we increased expression levels to 101 mg/L in a 50 L bioreactor, nearly twice the previously reported titer value. A battery of analytical methods was developed in accordance with current good manufacturing practices to ensure a quality biopharmaceutical. Imaged capillary isoelectric focusing verified proper glycosylation of gp145; dynamic light scattering confirmed the trimeric arrangement; and bio-layer interferometry and circular dichroism analysis demonstrated native-like properties (i.e., antibody binding and secondary structure). MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry was used as a multi-attribute platform for accurate mass determination, glycans analysis, and protein identification. Our robust analysis demonstrates that our gp145 product is very similar to a reference standard and emphasizes the importance of accurate characterization of a highly heterogeneous immunogen for the development of an effective vaccine. Finally, we present a novel guanosine microparticle with gp145 encapsulated and displayed on its surface. To efficiently extract the model parameters of photovoltaic (PV) modules, this paper proposed an identification method based on the Dynamic Elite-Leader Multi-Verse Optimizer (DLMVO) algorithm. An adaptive strategy was used to control parameters based on population evolution rate and aggregation rate to balance the exploitation and exploration to avoid the search falling into local optimization. In addition, this paper proposed a dynamic elite-leader-based variation strategy to enhance the probability of variation success and improve merit search speed. This proposed algorithm was applied to the parameter identification of two different PV modules and validated using six existing methods in the literature for comparison. The experimental results show that the DLMVO algorithm significantly reduced the standard deviation of the three models compared with the standard deviation of the MVO algorithm, the single diode decreased by nearly 40%, the single-component model decreased by about 28%, and the double diode exhibited the best effect, which decreased by 83%. Potassium overdose usually occurs accidentally, but potassium is also used for judicial executions, assisted death, and, rarely, suicides. In addition to exogenous overdose, various drugs, and renal failure, diabetic ketoacidosis can cause hyperkalemia. Potassium tablets are used in most cases of suicidal potassium overdose. Suicide by intravenous administration of potassium is rare but usually fatal. The author reports a rare case of suicide with potassium infusion. Autopsy and histology findings, along with post-mortem biochemical analysis of different body fluids and fluid from the infusion set, are reported. Previously published reports of potassium overdose were reviewed, and the detection possibilities of potassium overdose are discussed. The detection possibilities of lethal hyperkalemia are very limited since hyperkalemia produces only nonspecific autopsy and histology findings. Post-mortem potassium concentrations are not indicative of ante-mortem potassium concentrations; therefore, post-mortem biochemical analysis has limited value in determining potassium overdose. The cytotoxicity caused by snake venoms is a serious medical problem that greatly contributes to the morbidity observed in snakebite patients. The cytotoxic components found in snake venoms belong to a variety of toxin classes and may cause cytotoxic effects by targeting a range of molecular structures, including cellular membranes, the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the cytoskeleton. Here, we present a high-throughput assay (384-well plate) that monitors ECM degradation by snake venom toxins via the application of fluorescent versions of model ECM substrates, specifically gelatin and collagen type I. Both crude venoms and fractionated toxins of a selection of medically relevant viperid and elapid species, separated via size-exclusion chromatography, were studied using the self-quenching, fluorescently labelled ECM–polymer substrates. The viperid venoms showed significantly higher proteolytic degradation when compared to elapid venoms, although the venoms with higher snake venom metalloproteinase content did not necessarily exhibit stronger substrate degradation than those with a lower one. Gelatin was generally more readily cleaved than collagen type I. In the viperid venoms, which were subjected to fractionation by SEC, two (B. jararaca and C. rhodostoma, respectively) or three (E. ocellatus) active proteases were identified. Biofilm-mediated infections are critical to public health and a leading cause of resistance among pathogens, amounting to a prolonged hospital stay and increased mortality rate in the intensive care unit. In this study, the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of rifampicin or carbapenem monotherapies were compared with rifampicin and carbapenem combination therapies against rifampicin-resistant and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates. Among 29 CRAB isolates, 24/29 (83%) were resistant to rifampicin, with MIC values between 2–256 µg/mL. Checkerboard assays disclosed that combination therapies at FICIs between 1/8 and 1/4 improved the activity of carbapenems at subinhibitory concentrations. Time-kill kinetics indicated a 2- to 4-log reduction at 1/2 MIC rifampicin + 1/4 MIC carbapenem and 1/4 MIC rifampicin + 1/4 MIC carbapenem against the isolates, with the MIC values ranging from 2–8 µg/mL. The MTT assay revealed a dose-dependent decrease of the cell viability of established bacterial biofilm at 4 MIC rifampicin + 2 MIC carbapenems, with a percentage reduction of 44–75%, compared with monotherapies at 16 MIC. Scanning electron microscopy further confirmed bacterial cell membrane disruption, suggesting a synergism between carbapenem and rifampicin against a representative isolate. Simple Summary: Prion diseases are fatal and incurable neurodegenerative disorders affecting both humans and animals. The development of in vitro cellular models from naturally susceptible species such as ruminants can be very useful for the study of prion disease mechanisms and the discovery of potential therapies. Our study shows for the first time how the culture, in the form of three-dimensional spheroids of ovine mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow in growth and neurogenic conditions, makes these cells more permissive to prion infection, mimicking the prion toxicity occurring in these diseases. This three-dimensional system appears as a potential in vitro model for studying prion diseases in a microenvironment approaching in vivo conditions. In neurodegenerative diseases, including prion diseases, cellular in vitro models appear as fundamental tools for the study of pathogenic mechanisms and potential therapeutic compounds. Two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cell culture systems are the most used cell-based assays, but these platforms are not able to reproduce the microenvironment of in vivo cells. This limitation can be surpassed using three-dimensional (3D) culture systems such as spheroids that more effectively mimic in vivo cell interactions. Herein, we evaluated the effect of scrapie prion infection in monolayer-cultured ovine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (oBM-MSCs) and oBM-MSC-derived spheroids in growth and neurogenic conditions, analyzing their cell viability and their ability to maintain prion infection. An MTT assay was performed in oBM-MSCs and spheroids subjected to three conditions: inoculated with brain homogenate from scrapie-infected sheep, inoculated with brain homogenate from healthy sheep, and non-inoculated controls. The 3D conditions improved the cell viability in most cases, although in scrapie-infected spheroids in growth conditions, a decrease in cell viability was observed. The levels of pathological prion protein (PrPSc) in scrapie-infected oBM-MSCs and spheroids were measured by ELISA. In neurogenic conditions, monolayer cells and spheroids maintained the levels of PrPSc over time. In growth conditions, however, oBM-MSCs showed decreasing levels of PrPSc throughout time, whereas spheroids were able to maintain stable PrPSc levels. The presence of PrPSc in spheroids was also confirmed by immunocytochemistry. Altogether, these results show that a 3D culture microenvironment improves the permissiveness of oBM-MSCs to scrapie infection in growth conditions and maintains the infection ability in neurogenic conditions, making this model of potential use for prion studies. Citrus leprosis (CL) is the main viral disease affecting the Brazilian citriculture. Sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) trees affected by CL were identified in small orchards in Southern Brazil. Rod-like particles of 40 × 100 nm and electron lucent viroplasm were observed in the nucleus of infected cells in symptomatic tissues. RNA extracts from three plants, which proved negative by RT-PCR for known CL-causing viruses, were analyzed by high throughput sequencing and Sanger sequencing after RT-PCR. The genomes of bi-segmented ss(−)RNA viruses, with ORFs in a typical organization of members of the genus Dichorhavirus, were recovered. These genomes shared 98–99% nt sequence identity among them but <73% with those of known dichorhavirids, a value below the threshold for new species demarcation within that genus. Phylogenetically, the three haplotypes of the new virus called citrus bright spot virus (CiBSV) are clustered with citrus leprosis virus N, which is a dichorhavirus transmitted by Brevipalpus phoenicis sensu stricto. In CiBSV-infected citrus plants, B. papayensis and B. azores were found, but the virus could only be transmitted to Arabidopsis plants by B. azores. The study provides the first evidence of the role of B. azores as a viral vector and supports the assignment of CiBSV to the tentative new species Dichorhavirus australis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The adsorption behaviour of CH4 molecule on a perfect, vacancy-defected, and doped germanene/graphene heterostructure was investigated using density functional theory (DFT). The CH4 molecule was weakly adsorbed on the perfect substrate. The introduction of vacancies did not improve the activity of the germanene/graphene substrate, while doping atoms (B, N, S, V, Cr, and Ni) enhanced the adsorption stability of the CH4 molecule. The enhancement by transition metal dopants was more obvious than that of non-metal atoms. Among them, the V atom doped system has the strongest adsorption capacity for CH4 molecule. Compared with other studies, it was found that the adsorption capacity of V-VGe/G to CH4 molecule was better than most materials. Density functional theory is used to study the adsorption of CH4 molecule on perfect, vacancy-defected, and doping germanene/graphene heterostructures. The results show that the interaction between CH4 molecule and substrate is significantly enhanced by the introduction of atomic dopants, and the ability of transition metal atoms for enhancing the adsorption of the systems is stronger than that of non-metal atoms. There is a need for a reliable and independent evaluation and confirmation of the postmortem interval (PMI) based on objective factors other than only postmortem changes or temperature measurements. Estimating the PMI by examining the concentration of potassium ions in the vitreous humor (VH) has a tradition in forensic toxicology dating back to the mid-20th century. So far, the methods for determining the presence of potassium ions have not been characterized in terms of the measurement uncertainty of types A and B, which directly affect the estimation of time of death uncertainty. The study evaluated the uncertainty of the determination of potassium ion concentrations using potentiometric ion-selective electrode (ISE) and microwave-induced plasma with optical emission spectrometry (MIP-OES) methods. In addition, the influence of the estimated measurement uncertainty on the results of the analysis of potassium ions in the VH was investigated. The estimated values of the expanded uncertainty determined by the type A experimental method indicate lower uncertainty in the determination of potassium ion concentration in the case of MIP-OES than ISE; that is, for concentrations of 2, 10, and 25 mg/L of potassium ions, the expanded uncertainties by MIP-OES were 1.2%, 2.2%, and 2.5% and the uncertainties by ISE were 12.2%, 6.1%, and 3.1%, respectively. Similarly, in the case of estimating the uncertainty of type B, the MIP-OES method compared to ISE was characterized by almost two times lower expanded uncertainty; that is, for MIP-OES, it was 2.53%, and for ISE, it was 4.75%. Vertical nystagmus is a common neuro-ophthalmic sign in vestibular medicine. Vertical nystagmus not only reflects the functional state of vertical semicircular canal but also reflects the effect of otoliths. Medical experts can take nystagmus symptoms as the key factor to determine the cause of dizziness. Traditional observation (visual observation conducted by medical experts) may be biased subjectively. Visual examination also requires medical experts to have enough experience to make an accurate diagnosis. With the development of science and technology, the detection system for nystagmus can be realized by using artificial intelligence technology. In this paper, a vertical nystagmus recognition method is proposed based on deep learning. This method is mainly composed of a dilated convolution layer module, a depthwise separable convolution module, a convolution attention module, a Bilstm−GRU module, etc. The average recognition accuracy of the proposed method is 91%. Because of its hands-on and integrative approach to STEM, educational robotics has become increasingly popular in recent years. Yet, a gender gap still exists in attitudes towards STEM studies and careers, especially among middle and high school students, potentially resulting in a lack of women in the STEM workforce. This study explores the effect of a robotics curriculum on Dutch 7th- and 8th-grade students' attitude towards STEM subjects and careers, as assessed by the S-STEM survey. The results revealed no difference between the pre-test and post-test in attitudes toward STEM for both boys and girls. However, boys scored significantly higher than girls on attitude towards technology, engineering and future STEM studies on the post-test. A post hoc analysis revealed a significant difference between boys and girls on their attitude towards engineering and technology during the pre-test. These results demonstrate the difference between boys and girls in their attitudes towards STEM subjects and careers within the context of robotics education. Considering the lack of research on educational robotics among young teenagers, this field needs to be further studied to assess its effect on gender differences within attitudes towards STEM.
