We characterize the superconducting diode effect (SDE) in two-dimensional diffusive structures with Rashba spin-orbit coupling using the quasiclassical formalism. We consider both homogeneous superconductors and Josephson junctions. In the first case, the diode effect monotonically increases as the magnetic field is increased and the temperature is reduced, in contrast to the non-monotonic behavior found in clean structures. In Josephson junctions, SDE dramatically increases and changes its sign close to the $0-\pi$ transition of the junction, which occurs at specific junction lengths and strengths of the magnetic field. We show that the SDE is strongly suppressed in narrow junctions. Our results are relevant for understanding recent experiments that measure SDE in mesoscopic nanostructures, where significant disorder is unavoidable., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

In 1966, Pierre-Gilles de Gennes proposed a non-volatile mechanism for switching superconductivity on and off in a magnetic device. This involved a superconductor (S) sandwiched between ferromagnetic (F) insulators in which the net magnetic exchange field could be controlled through the magnetisation-orientation of the F layers. Because superconducting switches are attractive for a range of applications, extensive studies have been carried out on $F/S/F$ structures. Although these have demonstrated a sensitivity of the superconducting critical temperature ($T_{c}$) to parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) magnetisation-orientations of the F layers, corresponding shifts in $T_c$ (i.e., ${\Delta}T_c = T_{c,AP} - T_{c,P}$) are lower than predicted with ${\Delta}T_c$ only a small fraction of $T_{c,AP}$, precluding the development of applications. Here, we report $EuS/Au/Nb/EuS$ structures where EuS is an insulating ferromagnet, Nb is a superconductor and Au is a heavy metal. For P magnetisations, the superconducting state in this structure is quenched down to the lowest measured temperature of 20 mK meaning that ${\Delta}T_c/T_{c,AP}$ is practically 1. The key to this so-called absolute switching effect is a sizable spin-mixing conductance at the $EuS/Au$ interface which ensures a robust magnetic proximity effect, unlocking the potential of $F/S/F$ switches for low power electronics.

We present a theory of weak localization (WL) in the presence of generic spin-dependent fields, including any type of spin-orbit coupling, Zeeman fields, and non-homogeneous magnetic textures. We go beyond the usual diffusive approximation, considering systems with short-range disorder of arbitrary strength, and obtain a compact expression for the weak localization (WL) correction to the conductivity in terms of the singlet-triplet polarization operator in momentum space. The latter can be directly related to the solution of the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation for superconducting systems. This formulation presents an intuitive framework to explore how the interplay of various spin-dependent fields drives weak (anti) localization. We apply our results to study in-plane magnetoconductivity in systems with spin-orbit coupling, and in newly discovered altermagnets. Our results enable straightforward calculation of the WL conductivity at arbitrary disorder strength, which can be particularly useful for interpreting experiments on high-mobility samples., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We study the spectral properties of disordered superconductors with Ising spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) subjected to in-plane magnetic fields. In addition to the conventional singlet pairing, we also consider the recently proposed equal-spin triplet pairing, which couples to the singlet at finite in-plane magnetic fields. While both singlet and triplet order parameters are immune to intravalley scattering, they are significantly affected by intervalley scattering. In the realistic regime of strong ISOC, we find that the properties of the superconductor are well described by a simple formula reminiscent of the well-known Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, but with a modified self-consistency condition. Our results enable straightforward self-consistent calculation of singlet and triplet order parameters and the density of states of disordered Ising superconductors, which can be particularly useful for interpreting recent tunneling spectroscopy experiments in these systems. We review the use of hybrid thin films composed of superconductors and ferromagnets for creating non-reciprocal electronic components and self-biased detectors of electromagnetic radiation. We begin by introducing the theory behind these effects, as well as discussing various potential materials that can be used in the fabrication of these components. We then proceed with a detailed discussion on the fabrication and characterization of Al/EuS/Cu and EuS/Al/Co-based detectors, along with their noise analysis. We show that the amplitude, or Higgs mode of a superconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling and an exchange field, couples linearly to the electromagnetic field. Furthermore, by coupling such a superconductor to an LC resonator, we demonstrate that the Higgs resonance becomes a regular mode at frequencies smaller than the quasiparticle energy threshold $2\Delta$. We finally propose and discuss a possible experiment based on microwave spectroscopy for an unequivocal detection of the Higgs mode. Our approach may allow visualizing Higgs modes also in more complicated multiband superconductors with a coupling between the charge and other electronic degrees of freedom., Comment: 6+4 pages, 5 figures

Spin-orbitronic devices can integrate memory and logic by exploiting spin-charge interconversion (SCI), which is optimized by design and materials selection. In these devices, such as the magnetoelectric spin-orbit (MESO) logic, interfaces are crucial elements as they can prohibit or promote spin flow in a device as well as possess spin-orbit coupling resulting in interfacial SCI. Here, we study the origin of SCI in a Py/Cu/W lateral spin valve and quantify its efficiency. An exhaustive characterization of the interface between Cu and W electrodes uncovers the presence of an oxidized layer (WO$_x$). We determine that the SCI occurs at the Cu/WO$_x$ interface with a temperature-independent interfacial spin-loss conductance of $G_{||} \approx$ 20 $\times$ 10$^{13} \Omega^{-1}m^{-2}$ and an interfacial spin-charge conductivity $\sigma_{SC}=-$1610 $\Omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$ at 10 K ($-$830 $\Omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$ at 300 K). This corresponds to an efficiency given by the inverse Edelstein length $\lambda_{IEE}=-$0.76 nm at 10 K ($-$0.4 nm at 300 K), which is remarkably larger than in metal/metal and metal/oxide interfaces and bulk heavy metals. The macroscopic coherence in superconductors supports dissipationless supercurrents which could play a central role in emerging quantum technologies. Accomplishing unequal supercurrents in the forward and backward directions would enable unprecedented functionalities. This nonreciprocity of critical supercurrents is called superconducting (SC) diode effect. We demonstrate strong SC diode effect in conventional SC thin films, such as niobium and vanadium, employing external magnetic fields as small as 1 Oe. Interfacing the SC layer with a ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS, we further accomplish non-volatile SC diode effect reaching a giant efficiency of 65%. By careful control experiments and theoretical modeling, we demonstrate that the critical supercurrent nonreciprocity in SC thin films could be easily accomplished with asymmetrical vortex edge/surface barriers and the universal Meissner screening current governing the critical currents. Our engineering of the SC diode effect in simple systems opens door for novel technologies. Meanwhile, we reveal the ubiquity of Meissner screening effect induced SC diode effect in superconducting films, which should be eliminated with great care in the search of exotic superconducting states harboring finite-momentum Cooper pairing., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures
