Do we have a unified pre-theoretical concept of morality? This paper makes a start on the larger argument that we do not, by countering criticisms of virtue ethics on the ground that it does not adequately capture such a pre-theoretical concept. One criticism is discussed and met, namely that the reasons on which virtuous people act fail to have the special force of moral reasons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Moral options are permissions to do less than best, impartially speaking. In this paper, we investigate the challenge of reconciling moral options with the ideal of justifiability to each individual. We examine ex-post and ex-ante views of moral options and show how they might conflict with this ideal in single-choice and sequential-choice cases, respectively. We consider some ways of avoiding this conflict in sequential-choice cases, showing that they face significant problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SELF-consciousness (Awareness) ,MEANINGLESSNESS (Philosophy) ,IDEALS (Philosophy) ,BELIEF & doubt - Abstract
Following Heidegger, Severino called 'technology' the lógos that interprets the world according to our fundamental belief in téchne. He considered Giacomo Leopardi to be the only thinker who brought this ideology to its logical conclusion: if we can transform the world, then everything is meaningless. We try to escape this conclusion, but if Severino is right, we cannot. His philosophy thus reminds us that we still aren't aware of the fundamental meaning of our beliefs. Confronting its arguments may help us become more self-aware and, perhaps, even move us to question the unquestionable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. The paradoxical perfection of perfectibilité: from Rousseau to Condorcet.

PERFECTION ,IDEALS (Philosophy) ,HUMAN beings - Abstract
Rousseau coined the term perfectibilité to name what he claimed was the faculty that distinguished human beings from other animals. Although Rousseau himself largely associated perfectibility with the tendency of the human race to become corrupt, later thinkers adopted his term but then transformed it into a concept denoting the human capacity for progress. This article has two goals. The first goal is to analyse Rousseau's discussion of perfectibilité in order to identify a specifically Rousseauean of perfectibilité. I identify three related features of Rousseau's perfectibilité: the ambiguous status of both instinct and freedom, the unique malleability of human nature, and the fact that perfectibilité operates on both the levels of the individual and the species. The second goal is to examine the transformation of this specifically Rousseauean conception in the thought of one of the thinker largely responsible for giving it a very different direction, Condorcet. 6. Kant's Character-Based Account of Moral Weakness and Strength.

KANTIAN ethics ,VIRTUE ,IDEALS (Philosophy) ,SYMPATHY ,THEORY of knowledge - Abstract
The standard account of Kantian moral weakness fails to provide a psychologically realistic account of moral improvement. It assumes that moral strength is simply a matter of volitional resolve and weakness is a lack of resolve. This leaves the path to moral improvement unclear. In this paper, I reconstruct an alternative character-based account of Kantian moral weakness and strength. On this account, moral strength is the possession of sympathy and self-knowledge, key practical-epistemic virtues from Kant's Doctrine of Virtue, and moral weakness is a lack of these virtues. This identifies moral strength with a high degree of development, integrity, or fitness in one's character, and not merely an ability to somehow try harder. It also resolves an exegetical puzzle concerning the change of heart in Kant's Religion Within the Boundaries of Mere Reason. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VALUES (Ethics) ,VALUATION ,REALISM ,MORAL relativism ,IDEALS (Philosophy) - Abstract
Contemporary reflection on the concept of value oscillates between positions that advocate absolutist realism and positions that propose total relativism. The present paper aims to distance itself from these two ways of reading the topic, rejecting any monolithic conception, and proposing a stratified theory of value. Beginning with an analysis of values that differentiates them from both "goods" and "valuations," the author outlines an understanding of value that must be investigated in its multiple, interconnected layers. The stratification starts from the role of the emotional sphere and comes down to a formal and absolute conception of the concept. The goal of the paper is to outline the different levels of validity of each proposed layer, which must be recognized and differentiated, with the aim of also capturing the difficulties and ambiguities that characterize the transition from one level to another. Nils Christie's (1986) ideal victim is said to receive "complete and legitimate status as a victim." Many victims of intimate partner sexual assault (IPSA), are not given this status, resulting in their cases being unfounded. The current study evaluates 16 years of reported IPSA cases (n = 1,558) in a large municipal police department in the midwestern United States. Through multivariate logistic regression this study evaluates which factors lead a reported IPSA case to be unfounded. Further, it examines how the IPSA victim fits into the concept of the ideal victim. The results indicate that several variables representing the ideal victim criteria are influence in unfounding IPSA cases; however, many are the opposite of what might be expected based on Christie's work. Results further indicate that race (victim race, detective race, racial composition of district) has a substantial impact on IPSA cases being unfounded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article points out the flaws and limitations of the founding ideals of the United States. Several discussed include the exclusion of women and people of color from the concept of equality. It also contrasts the way in which the United States has written its history as a story of heroic victory with the way in which the chosen people of Israel wrote their history as a story of sin and conversion.

- Abstract
This book argues that the major traditions in the philosophy of language have mistakenly focused on highly idealized linguistic contexts. Instead, it presents a non-ideal foundational theory of language that contends that the essential function of language is to direct attention for the purpose of achieving diverse social and political goals.Philosophers of language have focused primarily on highly idealized linguistic contexts in which cooperative agents are working toward the shared goal of gaining information about the world. This approach abstracts away from important issues like power, ideology, social position, and diversity of goals which are crucial to explaining linguistic phenomena both at the semantic and pragmatic levels. This book begins by examining the work of some of the pioneers of this tradition—primarily David Lewis, Paul Grice, and Robert Stalnaker. The author shows that various problems have their source in idealizations made at the foundational level of linguistic theory and proposes to rebuild from the ground-up. She presents a non-ideal foundational theory of language which retains the major insights of traditional frameworks while rejecting the social idealizations that guide them. Then, she explores the social and political applications of her account to issues such as dog whistling, propaganda, racist speech, silencing, and manipulation.Non-Ideal Foundations of Language will appeal to researchers and advanced students in philosophy of language who are interested in the social and political applications of language, as well as traditional metasemantic theory.

That play was Patricia Burke Brogan's Eclipsed. I distinctly remember reading the dedication "To the Magdalenes ." At that time, I had no idea who the Magdalenes were, but after reading the play, I had a good idea and I also remember my visceral responses to the play.

Building a university outreach programme is a complex task that requires coordination of funding, regulations, research aims, practical activities and recruitment strategies. This article describes the building of an outreach programme based on the Philosophy with Children practice and the associated changes in the programme's research focus, practical activities and organisation over the first five years. Where did the initial inspiration come from, what form did it take eventually, and what have we learned? The article outlines our strategies and activities and I argue that two shifts in focus made the programme stronger in terms of impact and research. First, instead of sending university students into classrooms, we turned to teacher training programmes. Second, conversations with teachers indicated that the most interesting research questions were not about cognitive gains but about learning environments, teacher roles, facilitation techniques and other topics from educational studies. The article also assesses the strategies and research from the first six years of the programme and how they have demonstrated both challenges and opportunities in Philosophy with Children. The essay deals with problems encountered by Western researchers working in the field of Chinese philosophy. It begins with a discussion of intercultural and transcultural methodologies and illuminates some of the most common issues inherent in traditional intercultural comparisons in the field of philosophy. Taking into account the current state of the so-called postcomparative discourses in the field of transcultural philosophy and starting from the notion of culturally divergent frames of reference, it focuses upon semantic aspects of the Chinese philosophical tradition and exposes the need for discursive translations. On this basis, a new postcomparative approach in transcultural philosophical studies of Chinese philosophy is suggested. In this context, the author proposes the application of an innovative principle, based upon what can preliminary be denoted as the method of sublation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
'The Wisdom of Life'is one of Arthur Schopenhauer's works, originally published in 1851 as part of his collection'Parerga and Paralipomena.'In this work, Schopenhauer presents a series of aphorisms and brief reflections on achieving a wiser and more satisfying life. He discusses topics such as the pursuit of happiness, the nature of human suffering, the importance of self-understanding, and the art of living wisely in the face of life's adversities. Schopenhauer's aphorisms in'Aphorisms for the Wisdom of Life'reflect his philosophical outlook, deeply influenced by metaphysical pessimism. He argues that the world is fundamentally a place of pain and frustration but suggests that through understanding our own desires and limitations, we can find a path to resignation and contentment. This work is considered a practical and accessible exploration of his broader philosophical ideas, aimed not only at scholars but also at the general public interested in existential and ethical issues.

- Abstract
Philosophy is like a party that started over 2,500 years ago and is still going strong. When you take a philosophy class, you're invited to join this party; but walking into a party 2,500 years late can feel a little awkward. This book is meant to solve that problem. The best way to feel welcome is to focus on how funny philosophy is, simply because its ideals are so high that humans almost never manage to reach them. This book gives three answers to the question'What is philosophy?'(1) Philosophy is a conversation that has been going on for over 2,500 years which has been full of comedy from the beginning and will continue to be funny forever if we do it right. (2) Philosophy is a very awkward business that has always been on the verge of going out of business. (3) Philosophy is something that makes almost everyone write very badly. In addition to this three-act comedy the book also contains two practical guides to being happy and successful in philosophy classes.

- Abstract
This is the first of a three-volume work dedicated to exploring the influence of G.W.F. Hegel's philosophical thinking in Golden Age Denmark. The work demonstrates that the largely overlooked tradition of Danish Hegelianism played a profound and indeed constitutive role in many spheres of Golden Age culture. This initial tome covers the period from the beginning of the Hegel reception in the Danish Kingdom in the 1820s until the end of 1836. The dominant figure from this period is the poet and critic Johan Ludvig Heiberg, who attended Hegel's lectures in Berlin in 1824 and then launched a campaign to popularize Hegel's philosophy among his fellow countrymen. Using his journal Kjøbenhavns flyvende Post as a platform, Heiberg published numerous articles containing ideas that he had borrowed from Hegel. Several readers felt provoked by Heiberg's Hegelianism and wrote critical responses to him, many of which appeared in Kjøbenhavnsposten, the rival of Heiberg's journal. Through these debates Hegel's philosophy became an important part of Danish cultural life.

People (employees and investors) are the strength of the organizations and the leader who integrates this understanding creates an environment where people can use their full potential, feel appreciated and grow in the process. Organizations need to promote leadership that is able to nurture the spirit of each employee in order to create happy and harmonious workplaces. Such a nurturing and liberating environment will trigger social energy, which is not only a sufficient condition for innovation but the precondition for creating collective pride.

Hall, Beverly A. Johnson, Maruice Mangum, Natasha Altema McNeely, Amardo Rodriguez, Randall Swain, Edward V. Wallace, Ingrid P. Whitaker, and Mark M. WhitakerBeginning early in his career, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. recognized the moral and humanitarian need to pursue social justice and equity for marginalized Americans, those for whom the American dream had proven to be an elusive ideal. In Dream and Legacy, Volume II: Revisiting King in the Post–Civil Rights Era, contributors sift through the historical record, engaging one of America's most consequential, radical historical traditions.Despite robust reform efforts since the 1930s, a wide range of policy-related challenges plague the lives of African Americans, other persons of color, women, and the poor in the twenty-first century. This anthology, like the first from coeditors Michael L. Clemons, Donathan L. Brown, and William H. L. Dorsey, applies the ideology and activism of Dr. King to its analysis of contemporary sociopolitical issues in the United States and abroad. The project begins with a foreword that situates the subsequent essays within the context of contemporary social developments. Grouped into themed sections, the essays cover such topics as voting rights, public protest, police brutality, poverty and wage discrimination, healthcare, and more. The epilogue concludes with a discussion of the timeless impact of Dr. King's philosophy and activism, as well as the implications of his work for the future of domestic and global leadership. Dream and Legacy, Volume II identifies a variety of practical lessons that can help resolve contemporary social problems.

- Abstract
This book provides insights into new developments and persistent traditions in Zen teacher training and education through the use of historical archival research and original interviews with living Zen Masters. It argues that some contemporary Euro-American social values of gender equality, non-discrimination, rationality, ecumenicism and democracy permeate not only the organizational aspects of the Kwan Um School of Zen case study, but soteriological processes and goals of the training more widely. Each chapter showcases the ways important facets of Zen education—from meditation to curriculum development to school management — have absorbed Euro-American cultural and social ideals in both community and educational practices. Giving dedicated scholarly attention and conceptualising new adaptations in transnational Zen communities, it constitutes an important and timely addition to the literature and will appeal to researchers and scholars of religion and education, Asian pedagogies, contemporary Buddhism, transnational Zen, and Zen education.

In a provocative and engaging style, Philosophy: A Historical Survey with Essential Readings consists of two main parts: the chapters, which study the primary contributions of Western civilization's most influential philosophers, and the anthology of chronologically-organized classic readings from Western philosophy. The first half of this book presents a sustained narrative of the great philosophers of Western civilization, from ancient Greece until today. In the second half, the authors offer a snapshot of the most famous discussions by many of the philosophers studied in the first half. These readings parallel the order presented in the first half of the book. Philosophy: A Historical Survey with Essential Readings also can be customized (as a print or ebook) to include selections from Discourses, McGraw Hill's collection of more than 450 classical and contemporary philosophy readings.

- Abstract
Environmental disasters, unequal distribution of resources, viral pandemics, and other types of trans-national disasters, are global crises that cannot be solved within the narrow framework of individual nation-states. They must be addressed through global cooperation and solidarity. Such strategies require intercultural dialog that goes beyond fashionable slogans and can lead to a truly equal exchange of knowledge and ideas. Towards this endeavour, this book by Jana S. Rošker focuses on the traditional Confucian ethic of relationism, which historically spread throughout many regions of East Asia. She examines the specific features of relational ethics and explores its possible contribution to the new global ethics.

38. Humanism in Trans-civilizational Perspectives : Relational Subjectivity and Social Ethics in Classical Chinese Philosophy

- Abstract
This book introduces into the current global ethics debate models of humanism developed in classical Chinese traditions, which have not yet been comprehensively presented to Western scholarship or integrated into the framework of global discourses on social ethics and morality. It creates new paradigms for an understanding of humanism that meets the demands of our time. It begins by presenting European descriptions and critical assessments of this discourse, and then moves to an exploration of humanistic ideas shaped through historical developments in Asia, with a focus on the Chinese tradition. In this sense, the book is written from a transcivilizational perspective. The methods used in the research transcend---that is, surpass and overcome---the rigid, isolating, and essentialist concept of civilization. At the same time, the book points to the possibility of transformation through the exchange of knowledge and ideas between different civilizations. Within this framework, the book starts from the assumption that the ontology of civilizations and cultures is not based on immutable substances, but on the relations between different factors that constitute them as categories. The transcivilizational perspective rooted in transcultural dialogues between philosophies that originated in different cultures and civilizations is particularly valuable because of the globalized world in which we live today. This means that the problems that affect people in different parts of the world and the issues that are embedded in different geopolitical and developmental frameworks also affect all of humanity. This book is of particular interest to scholars and students of global ethics, globalization, Asian philosophy and Sinology.

39. The Philosophy of Hegel : Collected Works
- Author
-
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
- Abstract
In'The Philosophy of Hegel,'Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel presents a comprehensive examination of his intricate dialectical method and its foundational role in understanding reality. Through a meticulous exploration of concepts such as absolute truth, freedom, and the development of self-consciousness, Hegel's dense and nuanced prose challenges readers to engage deeply with his philosophical inquiries. Notably, Hegel situates his ideas in the context of German Idealism, engaging critically with predecessors like Kant and Fichte, and illuminating how his thoughts align within the broader philosophical landscape of the 19th century. Hegel, one of the foremost figures in Western philosophy, crafted this work in an era ripe with intellectual upheaval, marked by the aftermath of the Enlightenment and the rise of social movements. His background in theology and engagement with Enlightenment rationalism provided fertile ground for his ideas on the synthesis of opposites in the pursuit of truth. His experiences as a lecturer and later as a professor allowed him to shape his thoughts through dialogue with students and contemporaries, further enriching his philosophical legacy. This seminal work is essential for anyone wishing to grasp the complexities of modern philosophy. Hegel's rigorous exploration of the human spirit's evolution encourages readers to reflect on their own consciousness and the role of society in shaping thought. Highly recommended for students of philosophy and curious minds alike,'The Philosophy of Hegel'challenges us to traverse the profound depths of human existence.

40. Ethical Idealism

- Abstract
Ethical Idealism: An Inquiry into the Nature and Function of Ideals explores the role of ideals in guiding human thought and action. The book argues that although ideals are often unrealistic and unachievable, they play an essential and productive role in human affairs. The first chapter contends that pursuing unattainable goals is rational if these goals bring about positive results. The second chapter extends this argument by asserting that an obligation remains valid even if its fulfillment is impossible, challenging the traditional ought implies can principle within the confines of real-world limitations. The third chapter critiques the idea that rationality should focus solely on maximization, arguing instead that human goods are too varied to be standardized. Subsequent chapters delve deeper into the utility of ideals in human life. Chapter IV supports the value of optimism, even in seemingly hopeless situations, for its positive influence on actions and outcomes. Chapter V draws parallels between ideals and other abstract concepts like the equator or the prime meridian, which, though unattainable in a literal sense, are crucial for navigation and orientation. The final chapter emphasizes that ideals, despite their impractical nature, serve to give meaning to human endeavors and structure our actions toward higher goals. Throughout the book, the central theme is the harmonious relationship between the real and the ideal, with ideals serving as practical tools for guiding behavior and achieving values. The book thus defends the rationality of maintaining ideals, not as literal goals, but as essential instruments for human practice and moral understanding. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
- Abstract
The Collected Works of Hegel presents a comprehensive compilation of the philosophical writings of one of the most influential figures in German idealism. Spanning across topics such as logic, metaphysics, ethics, and history, Hegel's work is characterized by its dialectical method, exploring the progression of ideas through contradiction and resolution. His intricate prose often reflects the turbulence of early 19th-century Europe, where he grappled with the Enlightenment's legacy and the rise of romanticism. Through his elaborate conceptual frameworks, Hegel sought to provide deeper insight into the development of human consciousness and societal evolution, making this collection a cornerstone for understanding his philosophical system. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) was not only a philosopher but also a product of his time, influenced by the works of Kant and Fichte, as well as the sociopolitical upheavals occurring around him. His academic tenure and engagement in various philosophical debates shaped his thoughts on reality as a dynamic interplay of ideas. Hegel's life experiences, including his role in academia and his exposure to revolutionary ideas, inevitably informed the development of his profound theories and interpretations of the human experience. Readers seeking to delve into the complexities of Hegel's thought will find The Collected Works of Hegel an indispensable resource. This anthology not only enriches one's understanding of his philosophical arguments but also provides context for their relevance in contemporary discourse on identity, history, and ethics. Engaging with Hegel's writings will challenge readers to refine their own philosophies, making this collection essential for scholars and enthusiasts alike.

43. American Refugees : The Untold Story of the Mass Exodus From Blue States to Red States

- Abstract
“Roger Simon is among the many refugees fleeing blue state neoliberalism, and he's written the best account of our generation's greatest migration.”-Tucker Carlson, fired Fox News host“As a citizen of Tennessee, I can attest to the fact that there is a great migration happening from blue to red states. When people have had enough tyranny, they search for freedom elsewhere. This book captures a pivotal moment in time for our nation.”-John Rich, country music superstar and owner of Redneck Riviera Brand “Roger's analysis in American Refugees provides great evidence that America isn't in some inevitable national decline, we're just young. We're going through our own version of adolescence as a nation.”-Vivek Ramaswamy, Republican Presidential CandidateA net exodus of Americans from blue to red states has been in progress for several years now. This is largely a southbound movement, and perhaps some migrants are'running from the cold up in New England,'as the song goes. But mostly they are leaving states that are too far gone into woke socialism to recover anytime soon--notably California, New York, and Illinois--in favor of states with more conservative governance. The conventional wisdom, or fear, among red state locals is that these newcomers, despite having “voted with their feet,” will continue to vote for the same policies that ruined the states from which they are fleeing. Roger Simon argues that the reverse may be more accurate: blue-to-red migrants tend to be serious constitutional conservatives, and they might be the cavalry that rescues the red states from their own problems. With the possible exception of Florida, the red states, too, are in trouble. Like California, long-term one-party rule has corrupted them, but in a different way. Their political leaders have become disconnected from the conservative values of their constituents. Migrants from blue states, however, are likely to be highly invested in saving the red states into which they are moving.American Refugees is the story of how a culture clash precipitated a great blue state exodus, and what it means for the rest of America. Focusing particularly on Tennessee, Simon contends that only the red states can preserve the constitutional republic envisioned by the Founders. Only they can save America for our children and grandchildren. The struggle will be great, but the story will ultimately have a happy ending.
