The rediscovery of a curator's lost journal illuminates the astonishing African journey that formed the basis of the Chicago Field Museum's famed collections “Now” Is the Time to Collect tells the fascinating story of the Chicago Field Museum of Natural History's zoological expedition to Africa in 1896, the source of many of the museum's foundational collections and an astounding episode in nineteenth-century science. After the well-publicized extinction of the dodo and Carolina parakeet and the collapse of the American bison population, late nineteenth-century naturalists expected many more vulnerable species to die out with spread of Western-style industrialization. This triggered a race to collect rare species of animals expected soon to be lost forever. Established in 1893, Chicago's ambitious Field Museum aimed to become a global center of study. Zoologist Daniel Giraud Elliot persuaded museum patrons to fund an immediate expedition to British Somaliland (contemporary Somalia). There, his team hunted and killed hundreds of animals for the growing collection. On the trip was groundbreaking taxonomist Carl Akeley. Back in Chicago, Akeley created captivating lifelike dioramas of rare animal groups that enhanced the museum's fame and remain popular to this day. Enriched with illuminated passages from Elliot's journal, only recently rediscovered, “Now” Is the Time to Collect is the first book of its kind by an American museum and a case study in what author Paul D. Brinkman calls “salvage zoology”—the practice of aggressively collecting rare animal specimens for preservation just prior to the birth of the modern conservation movement. It is a riveting account of the expedition, the travelers'experiences in Somalia during its colonial period, and the astonishing origins of one of Chicago's classic museum experiences.

Best known for her appearances in the six Technicolor'Neverland'movies, Maria Montez is a film icon. Growing up as one of ten children in the Dominican Republic, her rise as a film star in the United States seemed unlikely. In 1939, Montez set off on her own to New York City to fulfill her aspirations of movie stardom. Despite having no substantial acting experience, Montez managed to sign with major agent Louis Schurr who helped her secure a contract with Universal Studios before she moved out to Hollywood.Following her arrival in Los Angeles, Montez began cultivating the larger-than-life persona for which she is known. Her beauty, personality, and series of publicity antics, including dramatic restaurant entrances, endeared her to the press. She even created her own fan club—The Montez for Stardom Club. Her ambitious self-promotion bolstered the success she found with her first big lead in Arabian Nights, released in 1943. From then on, the studio referred to her as'The Queen of Technicolor.'Author Tom Zimmerman puts Montez's life in historical context, including her role as a cultural icon and a living representation of the United States'Good Neighbor Policy with Latin American countries. Patrick Matthew, in 1831, originated the complete theory of evolution by natural selection in his book On Naval Timber and Arboriculture, and did so before Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace claimed to independently replicate it in 1858. Unjustly, and against the Arago convention on priority (a ruling that gives origination of any science theory to the first to publish), Matthew has been illicitly denied his priority on the grounds he never influenced anyone with his breakthrough. Today, Big Data research has uncovered Darwin's science fraud by plagiarism, revealing evidence which proves beyond all reasonable doubt that he and Alfred Wallace both independently plagiarised the theory of evolution by natural selection from Patrick Matthew. Books have been newly unearthed in the publication record to show that at least 30 people cited Matthew's work in published literature before 1858 and that several were known influencers of Darwin's and Wallace's work in the field. Additionally, several people in Darwin's and Wallace's social circles were first to be second into print using original terms coined by Matthew in his bombshell breakthrough book. This book reveals all the newly unearthed data and essentially explains it, alongside the deplorable treatment of Patrick Matthew, in scholarly historical context. Dr Mike Sutton further reveals, using social science participatory observation methods and experimental results, how members of the so-called Darwin Industry, enabled and facilitated by the deliberate publication of falsehoods and other grossly misleading editing on Wikipedia, have disgracefully worked to re-bury these newly unearthed facts by means of knee-jerk blind-sight ignorant rejection, blatant and deliberate fact-denial censorship, persistent and serious workplace harassment, obscene social media abuse, poison pen emails, lies, mischievous misrepresentation, and repeat research plagiarism.

Coenraad Jacob Temminck and the Emergence of Systematics (1800–1850) is the first study to examine in detail the life and work of Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778–1858), the Dutch naturalist who was the first director of's Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie (National Museum of Natural History) in Leiden, The Netherlands. This study situates Temminck's activities in the context of European natural history during the early to the mid-nineteenth century. Three issues which defined the era are discussed in more detail: the growing European colonial territories, the rise of scientific meritocracy, and the emergence of systematics as a discipline. Temminck's biography elucidates how and why systematics developed, and why its status within the natural sciences has been a matter of discussion for more than a century.
