Abstract Polyamorphic transition (PT) is a compelling and pivotal physical phenomenon in the field of glass and materials science. Understanding this transition is of scientific and technological significance, as it offers an important pathway for effectively tuning the structure and property of glasses. In contrast to the PT observed in conventional metallic glasses (MGs), which typically exhibit a pronounced first-order nature, herein we report a continuous PT (CPT) without first-order characteristics in high-entropy MGs (HEMGs) upon heating. This CPT behavior is featured by the continuous structural evolution at the atomic level and an increasing chemical concentration gradient with temperature, but no abrupt reduction in volume and energy. The continuous transformation is associated with the absence of local favorable structures and chemical heterogeneity caused by the high configurational entropy, which limits the distance and frequency of atomic diffusion. As a result of the CPT, numerous glass states can be generated, which provides an opportunity to understand the nature, atomic packing, formability, and properties of MGs. Moreover, this discovery highlights the implication of configurational entropy in exploring polyamorphic glasses with an identical composition but highly tunable structures and properties.

Abstract Background Sugarcane red rot is a soil-borne disease caused by Colletotrichum falcatum. It can reduce the yield of sugarcane and the purity of sugarcane juice, which seriously restricts the development of sucrose industry. Biocontrol bacteria can control diseases by regulating rhizosphere microecology. In this study, the effects of biocontrol bacteria on sugarcane rhizosphere microecology were studied by metagenomics and metabolomics, and the control effects of biocontrol bacteria and rhizosphere dominant bacteria on sugarcane red rot were further explored by pot experiment. Results The results of metagenomic sequencing showed that inoculation with B. velezensis YC89 and pathogens could significantly change the microbial diversity of the sugarcane rhizosphere. The relative abundance of beneficial strains such as Streptomyces, Burkholderia, Sphingomonas, and Rhizobium increased significantly in the rhizosphere of sugarcane in the YC treatment group. Pseudomonas was significantly enriched in the rhizosphere of sugarcane in the C treatment group. The results of metabolome sequencing showed that the content of amino acids in sugarcane root exudates increased after inoculation with B. velezensis YC89, and the contents of phenolic acids and flavonoids decreased. Spearman correlation analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between differential metabolites and rhizosphere microorganisms. The results of pot experiment showed that YC89 strain and three rhizosphere microorganisms could significantly reduce the disease index of red rot and promote the growth of sugarcane plants. In addition, these strains can also significantly increase the JA and SA content of sugarcane leaves and induce plant system resistance-related enzyme activities. Among them, the synthetic community treatment group had the best biocontrol effect on red rot, and its relative control effect was 67.50%. Conclusions Therefore, we conclude that B. velezensis YC89 could recruit beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms to enrich the rhizosphere and change the content of some phenolic acids and flavonoids in the root exudates. In addition, the isolated rhizosphere dominant bacteria and YC89 strain can resist red rot by inducing plant systemic resistance and promote the growth of sugarcane plants. This study provides a theoretical basis for the use of biocontrol bacteria to regulate rhizosphere bacteria to jointly control plant soil-borne diseases. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Developing light yet strong aluminum (Al)-based alloys has been attracting unremitting efforts due to the soaring demand for energy-efficient structural materials. However, this endeavor is impeded by the limited solubility of other lighter components in Al. Here, we propose to surmount this challenge by converting multiple brittle phases into a ductile solid solution in Al-based complex concentrated alloys (CCA) by applying high pressure and temperature. We successfully develop a face-centered cubic single-phase Al-based CCA, Al55Mg35Li5Zn5, with a low density of 2.40 g/cm3 and a high specific yield strength of 344×103 N·m/kg (typically ~ 200×103 N·m/kg in conventional Al-based alloys). Our analysis reveals that formation of the single-phase CCA can be attributed to the decreased difference in atomic size and electronegativity between the solute elements and Al under high pressure, as well as the synergistic high entropy effect caused by high temperature and high pressure. The increase in strength originates mainly from high solid solution and nanoscale chemical fluctuations. Our findings could offer a viable route to explore lightweight single-phase CCAs in a vast composition-temperature-pressure space with enhanced mechanical properties.

Abstract Solution growth of single-crystal ferroelectric oxide films has long been pursued for the low-cost development of high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, the established principles of vapor-phase epitaxy cannot be directly applied to solution epitaxy, as the interactions between the substrates and the grown materials in solution are quite different. Here, we report the successful epitaxy of single-domain ferroelectric oxide films on Nb-doped SrTiO3 single-crystal substrates by solution reaction at a low temperature of ~200 oC. The epitaxy is mainly driven by an electronic polarization screening effect at the interface between the substrates and the as-grown ferroelectric oxide films, which is realized by the electrons from the doped substrates. Atomic-level characterization reveals a nontrivial polarization gradient throughout the films in a long range up to ~500 nm because of a possible structural transition from the monoclinic phase to the tetragonal phase. This polarization gradient generates an extremely high photovoltaic short-circuit current density of ~2.153 mA/cm2 and open-circuit voltage of ~1.15 V under 375 nm light illumination with power intensity of 500 mW/cm2, corresponding to the highest photoresponsivity of ~4.306×10−3 A/W among all known ferroelectrics. Our results establish a general low-temperature solution route to produce single-crystal gradient films of ferroelectric oxides and thus open the avenue for their broad applications in self-powered photo-detectors, photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices.

Relaxation dynamics, as a key to understand glass formation and glassy properties, remains an elusive and challenging issue in condensed matter physics. In this work, in situ high-pressure synchrotron high-energy X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy has been developed to probe the atomic-scale relaxation dynamics of a cerium-based metallic glass during compression. Although the sample density continuously increases, the collective atomic motion initially slows down as generally expected and then counterintuitively accelerates with further compression (density increase), showing an unusual nonmonotonic pressure-induced steady relaxation dynamics cross-over at ~3 GPa. Furthermore, by combining in situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction, the relaxation dynamics anomaly is evidenced to closely correlate with the dramatic changes in local atomic structures during compression, rather than monotonically scaling with either sample density or overall stress level. Recently, evidence for a conducting surface state (CSS) below 19 K was reported for the correlated d-electron small gap semiconductor FeSi. In the work reported herein, the CSS and the bulk phase of FeSi were probed via electrical resistivity ρ measurements as a function of temperature T, magnetic field B to 60 T, and pressure P to 7.6 GPa, and by means of a magnetic field-modulated microwave spectroscopy (MFMMS) technique. The properties of FeSi were also compared with those of the Kondo insulator SmB6 to address the question of whether FeSi is a d-electron analogue of an f-electron Kondo insulator and, in addition, a "topological Kondo insulator" (TKI). The overall behavior of the magnetoresistance of FeSi at temperatures above and below the onset temperature TS = 19 K of the CSS is similar to that of SmB6. The two energy gaps, inferred from the ρ(T) data in the semiconducting regime, increase with pressure up to about 7 GPa, followed by a drop which coincides with a sharp suppression of TS. Several studies of ρ(T) under pressure on SmB6 reveal behavior similar to that of FeSi in which the two energy gaps vanish at a critical pressure near the pressure at which TS vanishes, although the energy gaps in SmB6 initially decrease with pressure, whereas in FeSi they increase with pressure. The MFMMS measurements showed a sharp feature at TS ≈ 19 K for FeSi, which could be due to ferromagnetic ordering of the CSS. However, no such feature was observed at TS ≈ 4.5 K for SmB6.
