Vestibular migraine (VM) is one of the most common causes of episodic central vestibular disorders; it is worth investigating whether VM belongs to the migraine subtype or is a separate disorder. The study is aimed at investigating resting-state functional brain activity alterations in patients with definite VM (dVM).Seventeen patients with dVM, 8 patients with migraine, and 17 health controls (HCs) were recruited. The amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional ALFF (fALFF), and regional homogeneity (ReHo) were calculated to observe the changes in spontaneous brain activity.Compared with HCs, VM patients showed significantly increased ALFF values in the right temporal lobe (P = 0.002) and increased ReHo values in the right superior, middle, and inferior temporal gyrus (STG, MTG, and ITG, P = 0.013); patients with migraine showed significantly increased ALFF values in the right limbic lobe (P = 0.04), left ITG (P = 0.024), and right frontal lobe (P 0.001), significantly decreased ALFF values in the pons and brainstem (P = 0.013), and significantly decreased ReHo values in the frontal cortex (P 0.001). Compared with patients with migraine, VM patients showed significantly increased fALFF values in the right parietal lobe (P = 0.011) and right frontal lobe (P = 0.026) and significantly increased ReHo values in the right thalamus (P = 0.043).Patients with VM and migraine both had altered brain function, but the regions involved are different.

Although hexagonal boron nitride and graphene in two-dimensional materials have similar structures, there are great differences in their electronic structures. hBN has a huge energy gap (~ 6 eV) and can be regarded as a semiconductor or insulator, while graphene can be used as a conductor because of its zero-energy gap. Because of their high degree of lattice matching, they often overlap each other and are used as conductive layer and insulating layer in the material process of electronic components. In this study, we tried to prepare nano-sized hexagonal boron nitride particles by a relatively simple method "liquid-assisted ball milling and ultrasonic exfoliating" to solve the high-cost problem of the industrialization of hBN. We prepared hBN nanoparticles using zirconium milling balls, water-proof sonication and ultrasonic crusher, then studied the essential changes to their electronic structures and sizes through Atomic Force Microscope and various spectroscopic methods such as PL, PLE, absorption and Raman spectrum. It helps us to find ways to control the electronic structure and energy gap of hBN, which would help the development of advanced semiconductor manufacturing applications and advanced quantum light sources.

Objective: To investigate the clinical features of patients with definite vestibular migraine (dVM). Methods: A total of 91 patients with vestibular symptoms accompanied by migraines/migrainelike symptoms were enrolled and diagnosed according to the criteria of the Bárány Society and the International Headache Society. Baseline data were collected. Videonystagmography and immune-related laboratory tests were performed. Results: Among the 91 patients, 62 (68.1%) had dVM (11 men, 51 women). Among dVM patients, migraine occurred earlier than vestibular symptoms in 42 (67.7%) patients. Spontaneous vertigo occurred in 41 (66.1%) patients. Induced vertigo occurred in 21 (33.9%) patients. Motion sickness occurred in 33 (53.2%) patients. Central oculomotor dysfunction was observed in 11 (17.7%) patients. Caloric test revealed unilateral horizontal semicircular canal dysfunction in 12 (19.4%) patients. Severe intolerance during the test occurred in 44 (71.0%) patients with dVM. 12 (19.4%) patients showed abnormal immune-related indicators. Conclusion: dVM is more common in women. The onset of migraine precedes that of vestibular symptoms, which are often accompanied by photophobia and phonophobia. Motion sickness and severe caloric test intolerance can contribute to the diagnosis of dVM. Immunological indicators are abnormal in some patients with dVM, dVM may be secondary or an accompanying disorder, but the causal relationship needs further investigation. Level of evidence: IV.

Urban flooding caused by extreme rainfall events has been recognized as a global issue. Systematic stormwater infrastructures, i.e., the source green infrastructures and the midway or end-of-system storages, are playing increasingly significant roles in urban areas threatened by flooding. Recently, model predictive control (MPC) is being introduced as an alternative for adaptative stormwater management. However, little research has recognized the significance of combining the two aspects to mitigate flood risk cost-effectively. This research presents a modeling framework that evaluates the impact of integrating MPC with storage tanks and low impact development (LID) facilities. One sponge city pilot in Shenzhen City, China is selected as the study case. Simulations involving design rainfall events are conducted under three control scenarios (i.e., LID-only, systematic LID & tank, integrated LID & MPC tank) compared to the baseline scenario without any stormwater infrastructure. The benefits of flooding volume/peak flow reduction are assessed for these scenarios, as well as investment costs. Results indicate that systematic stormwater infrastructures perform better than the baseline or LID-only scenarios, and the integration of the MPC approach significantly enhances the system performance during extreme rainfall events. The integrated control provides the most cost-effective solution at each investment level, increasing system benefit while saving the life cycle cost compared to the static control. Due to the construction and operation of cascade reservoirs, the natural hydrological regimes have inevitably been altered and most fish spawning grounds have been destroyed, thus causing ecological impacts on riverine ecosystems and fish reproduction. An effective way to restore fish habitats and fulfill their spawning requirements is to generate an appropriate ecological flow regime guided by Natural-based solutions (NbS) that can help restore valuable functions provided by nature. With a focus on one major existing spawning ground for four major Chinese carps (FMCC) in the Hongshui River (HSR), China, this study first evaluated temporal variations of flow regimes and their ecological responses in multiple time scales by employing several eco-hydrological indicators. A fuzzy logic-based one- and two-dimensional-coupled fish habitat model was then built to estimate a suitable ecological flow to ensure the existence of continuous and connected habitats. Furthermore, an improved fluctuation identification algorithm was proposed to quantitatively identify naturally effective high-flow processes to trigger fish spawning behaviors following NbS guidance. Thus, suitable ecological flow regimes were established based on the notion of thresholds of flow discharge while meeting the requirements for water temperature during the spawning period of FMCC. The results recommended high-flow processes characterized with thresholds of flow indicators while mimicking natural flow regimes to be generated to stimulate FMCC spawning in different periods in HSR. The findings of this study provide actionable insights into the conservation of fish in dammed rivers and such NbS-oriented practices can create achievable strategies for reservoir operations., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

In this work, we propose a deep-learning method to diagnose bearing faults of electric motors based on vibration and bearing housing temperature. Our methods can accurately diagnose faults related to bearing cracking and lubricant shortages. The proposed method is effective in terms of computational complexity and model capacity thanks to the advantages of neural architecture search (NAS) and parameter quantization in the model establishment. The experimental results found that the information on bearing temperature improved the diagnostic accuracy for the bearing fault diagnosis task. The proposed method has explored the most optimal model in terms of computational resources and model capacity with a pre-defined accuracy target. The searched model has a relatively high diagnostic accuracy of 98.7% and a size of about 27.3 kB. After quantization, the obtained model maintained 96.9% accuracy and reduced 4 times in size. All experiments are executed elaborately on our custom bearing fault dataset.

Compared with HCs, VM patients showed significantly increased ALFF values in the right temporal lobe (Cluster size = 91 voxels, P=0.002, FWE corrected), and significantly increased ReHo values in the right superior temporal gyrus (STG), middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) (Cluster size = 136 voxels, P=0.013, FWE corrected). Compared with patients with migraine, patients with VM showed significantly increased fALFF values in the right parietal lobe (Cluster size = 43 voxels, P=0.011, FWE corrected) and right frontal lobe (Cluster size =36 voxels, P=0.026, FWE corrected), significantly increased ReHo values in the right thalamus (Cluster size = 92 voxels, P=0.043, FWE corrected). Our findings documented that patients with VM showed enhanced spontaneous functional activity in the right temporal lobe (STG, MTG, and ITG) compared with HCs, and increased spontaneous activity in the right parietal lobe-frontal lobe-thalamus compared with patients with migraine. Patients with VM and migraine both had altered brain function, but the regions involved are different.
