The thermal expansion occurring when a laser beam is incident on the surface of a solid can be used to excite ultrasonic waves in the solid medium, without causing damage to the material. The resulting wavefield is characterized by a dominant shear wave and a weak compressional wave. This Letter demonstrates the possibility of generating a dominant compressional wavefield by coating the surface with a layer of clear ice. This is achieved by exploiting a minimum in the attenuation spectrum of light in ice, which occurs at around 500 nm and renders the coating transparent to green laser radiation. Ice coatings could, therefore, provide a path for the development of more sensitive laser-based nondestructive testing methods that have traditionally been affected by the poor excitability of compressional waves, especially along the direction orthogonal to the surface. A 57 Fe nucleus in the solar core could emit a 14.4-keV monochromatic axion through the M1 transition if a hypothetical elementary particle, axion, exists to solve the strong CP problem. Transition edge sensor (TES) X-ray microcalorimeters can detect such axions very efficiently if they are again converted into photons by a 57 Fe absorber. We have designed and produced a dedicated TES array with 57 Fe absorbers for the solar axion search. The iron absorber is set next to the TES, keeping a certain distance to reduce the iron-magnetization effect on the spectroscopic performance. A gold thermal transfer strap connects them. A sample pixel irradiated from a 55 Fe source detected 698 pulses. In contrast to thermal simulations, we consider that the pulses include either events produced in an iron absorber or gold strap at a fraction dependent on the absorption rate of each material. Furthermore, photons deposited on the iron absorber are detected through the strap as intended. The identification of all events still needs to be completed. Considering the natural course of cavernous nerve recovery following robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RARP), early intervention of low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LIESWT) would be more effective for enhancing overall recovery of potency. We analyzed longitudinally alterations in sexual function in patients after RARP, with focus on the effect of early and delayed intervention with LIESWT. This study was open-label prospective study. Four patients after RARP were enrolled into this study's protocol over a period between January and June 2017. This early intervention was performed three times a week for two weeks in admission and one time per week in our out patient clinic for six weeks. For the purpose of setting a control group, the same surgeon performed RARP on 4 patients over a period between June 2012 and December 2014. These patients received LIESWT and this delayed protocol was same as that by Vardi et al. The same surgeon performed RARP on 100 patients over a period between April 2012 and February 2015. These patients were assigned to the non-LIESWT group for setting another control group. Sexual function (SF) was assessed with the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC). A validated form of self-reported questionnaire was administered to the inpatients before RARP, and mailed to all patients receiving RARP at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after RARP. There was no significant inter-group difference in the baseline patient characteristics and surgical outcomes. The mean duration from RARP to the start of penile rehabilitation was 6 months for patients of the delayed LIESWT group. The SF score was significantly higher at preoperative, postoperative 6 and 9 months (p=0.0024, 0.0001, and 0.0004) in the early-LIESWT group. The SF score of early-LIESWT was significantly higher than that of delayed-LIESWT at postoperative 6 and 9 months (19.7 vs. 7.4; p = 0.0153, 26.2 vs. 6.1; p = 0.0154). On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the SF score between delayed and non-LIESWT groups at all time points. Our findings show that penile rehabilitation with LIESWT immediately before urethral catheter removal improved sexual function scores. This study attempted to develop detection methods for solar axions using transition-edge-sensor (TES) microcalorimeters. Since the axion absorber comprised of iron-57 (57Fe) is electroplated upon the membrane instead of directly onto the TES itself (with the absorber hence thermally connected to the TES via a gold thermal strap), some of the heat deposited into the absorber consequently escapes into the heat bath through the membrane before being detected by the TES. If the heat-loss depends upon the axion interaction position within the absorber, position dependence may degrade the energy resolution. Therefore, this study endeavored to evaluate the dependence of heat-loss and pulse shape on axion incident position with the COMSOL Multiphysics software package (using a finite element method). Purpose: The mechanism of cytotoxicity of silibinin on two human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines, HepG2 (p53 wild-type) and Hep3B cells (p53 null), is examined in relation with the induction of autophagy and phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (p-AMPK). Materials and Methods: Levels of apoptosis in relation to the levels of autophagy and those of glycolysis-related proteins, glucose transporter 1/4 (Glut1/4) and hexokinase-II (HK2), in HepG2 and Hep3B cells were examined. Results: Silibinin-induced apoptosis was incomplete for HCC cell death in that up-regulated autophagy and/or reduced level of glycolysis, which are induced by silibinin treatment, antagonized silibinin-induced apoptosis. Inhibition of autophagy with 3-methyl adenine (3MA) or blocking of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation with Compound C (CC) enhanced silibinin-induced apoptosis. The results confirm that AMPK involved in autophagy as well as in glycolysis remaining with silibinin is responsible for attenuation of silibinin-induced apoptosis. Blocking of AMPK or autophagy contributes to the enhancement of silibinin's cytotoxicity to HepG2 and Hep3B cells. Conclusion: This study shows that incomplete apoptosis of HCC by silibinin treatment becomes complete by repression of autophagy and/or glycolysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) is an upcoming balloon mission to measure low-energy cosmic-ray antinuclei during at least three ∼ 35-day Antarctic flights. With its large geometric acceptance and novel exotic atom-based particle identification, GAPS will detect ∼ 500 cosmic antiprotons per flight and produce a precision cosmic antiproton spectrum in the kinetic energy range of ∼ 0. 07 − 0. 21 GeV/ n at the top of the atmosphere. With these high statistics extending to lower energies than any previous experiment, and with complementary sources of experimental uncertainty compared to traditional magnetic spectrometers, the GAPS antiproton measurement will be sensitive to dark matter, primordial black holes, and cosmic ray propagation. The antiproton measurement will also validate the GAPS antinucleus identification technique for the antideuteron and antihelium rare-event searches. This analysis demonstrates the GAPS sensitivity to cosmic-ray antiprotons using a full instrument simulation and event reconstruction, and including solar and atmospheric effects. This study explored the application of bio-based repair materials to concrete for crack repair and patch repair methods. First, the concept of crack repair using Bacillus subtilis (natto) under wet conditions is presented. In addition to the self-healing efficiency, enhancement of corrosion resistance owing to consumption of dissolved oxygen by bacteria which could work as a cathodic inhibitor is theoretically explained by electro-chemical reactions. And then, this study exemplified the application of the bio-based repair material to concrete with respect to crack repair and patch repair methods. First, alginate-based self-healing materials (in-situ encapsulation) are newly developed in this study to improve the resistance against ingress of water in cracked mortar specimens, which is demonstrated by the reduced absorption of water. This is adequately explained by the fact that the calcite precipitation in gel films formed in crack is highly effective in sealing crack in mortar specimen. In addition, the healing agents could reduce the concentration of dissolved oxygen in concrete, which is found to contribute to reduction of the macrocell corrosion current density in which the corrosion rate is determined by the cathodic reactions associated with diffusion of dissolved oxygen. The use of Bacillus subtilis (natto) is highly advantageous in preventing re-deterioration owing to macrocell corrosion taking place between patch repair region and surrounding concrete containing chloride. Minimum sets of in-vessel components were installed for initial operation of JT-60SA in order to product and control the plasma and to know the plasma basic information, including inboard first wall, upper divertor, protection limiter, glow electrodes and magnetic sensors. All of magnetic sensors were installed within the required accuracy with in-situ measurement with laser tracker. The inboard first wall and the upper divertor were installed for the limiter configuration at the plasma initiation and the divertor configuration, respectively. They have carbon tiles as the first wall, which must be installed with accuracy of ± 1 mm in order to avoid the heat concentration. However, the vacuum-vessel wall had some deformation. Therefore, we measured in advance with laser tracker the position of the vacuum vessel where the bases of the inboard first wall and upper divertor would be welded. By using these position data and 3D CAD, we customized all bases. Owing to these procedures, we could install the first wall with required accuracy. The General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS) is an Antarctic balloon experiment designed for low-energy (0.1–0.3 GeV/ n) cosmic antinuclei as signatures of dark matter annihilation or decay. GAPS is optimized to detect low-energy antideuterons, as well as to provide unprecedented sensitivity to low-energy antiprotons and antihelium nuclei. The novel GAPS antiparticle detection technique, based on the formation, decay, and annihilation of exotic atoms, provides greater identification power for these low-energy antinuclei than previous magnetic spectrometer experiments. This work reports the sensitivity of GAPS to detect antihelium-3 nuclei, based on full instrument simulation, event reconstruction, and realistic atmospheric influence simulations. The report of antihelium nuclei candidate events by AMS-02 has generated considerable interest in antihelium nuclei as probes of dark matter and other beyond the Standard Model theories. GAPS is in a unique position to detect or set upper limits on the cosmic antihelium nuclei flux in an energy range that is essentially free of astrophysical background. In three 35-day long-duration balloon flights, GAPS will be sensitive to an antihelium flux on the level of 1. 3 − 1.2 + 4.5 · 10 − 6 m-2sr-1s-1(GeV/ n)-1 (95% confidence level) in the energy range of 0.11–0.3 GeV/ n , opening a new window on rare cosmic physics.
