The commitment by over 100 governments covering over 90% of the world’s forests at the COP26 in Glasgow to end deforestation by 2030 requires more effective forest monitoring systems. The near real-time (NRT) change detection of forest cover loss enables forest landowners, government agencies and local communities to monitor natural and anthropogenic disturbances in a much timelier fashion than the thematic maps that are released every year. NRT deforestation alerts enable the establishment of more up-to-date forest inventories and rapid responses to unlicensed logging. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites provide operational Earth observation (EO) data from multi-spectral optical/near-infrared wavelengths every five days at a global scale and at 10 m resolution. The amount of acquired data requires cloud computing or high-performance computing for ongoing monitoring systems and an automated system for processing, analyzing and delivering the information promptly. Here, we present a Sentinel-2-based NRT change detection system, assess its performance over two study sites, Manantlán in Mexico and Cartagena del Chairá in Colombia, and evaluate the forest changes that occurred in 2018. An independent validation with very high-resolution PlanetScope (~3 m) and RapidEye (~5 m) data suggests that the proposed NRT change detection system can accurately detect forest cover loss (> 87%), other vegetation loss (> 76%) and other vegetation gain (> 71%). Furthermore, the proposed NRT change detection system is designed to be attuned using in situ data. Therefore, it is scalable to larger regions, entire countries and even continents.

Cacao mucilage is typically disposed of during processing, yet its abundant content of organic compounds, polysaccharides, and nutrients renders it valuable for various applications. This scientific study investigates the suitability of cacao mucilage as an alternative culture medium for Lactiplantibacillus plantarum , Saccharomyces cerevisiae , and Aspergillus niger , aiming to provide a viable alternative to traditional media. Through a mixed-design approach, the powdered mucilage, peptone, and yeast extract ingredients were optimized using the recovery rates of each micro-organism as the response variable. The optimal formulation of the medium, consisting of 49.6% mucilage, 30% yeast extract, and 20.9% peptone, resulted in remarkable microbial recovery rates. L. plantarum achieved an outstanding recovery rate of 98.18%, while S. cerevisiae and A. niger exhibited recovery rates of 90.57% and 89.90%, respectively. Notably, these recovery rates surpassed those obtained using conventional culture mediums. Thus, cacao mucilage emerges as an effective component for formulating a natural culture medium that facilitates the growth of yeasts, lactic acid bacteria, and fungi. The yeast extract peptone mucilage (YPM) medium demonstrated enhanced growth, particularly for yeasts and lactic acid bacteria, with recovery rates exceeding 90%. Conversely, A. niger displayed a relatively lower recovery rate. These findings emphasize the potential of cacao mucilage as a valuable resource for preparing natural culture media that promotes the growth of yeasts, lactic acid bacteria, and fungi, offering promising prospects for various applications in microbiology and biotechnology.

Cadmium (Cd) concentrations in cacao beans from Latin America often exceed limits for trading. A better understanding of the mechanisms of Cd accumulation in Theobroma cacao L. trees is necessary to advance mitigation strategies. Recent studies on a high Cd accumulating cultivar of cacao revealed that calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals were involved in Cd accumulation in the branches. The purpose of this study was to quantify soluble and crystalline oxalate in cacao compartments, to characterize their morphology and distribution in the tissues, and to evaluate the relationship between CaOx and Cd total concentrations in each plant compartment. Two representative cultivars from Latin America (CCN-51 and Nacional) were studied. CCN-51 trees grew on soils with low and high total Cd contents (0.120 ± 0.002 and 2.59 ± 0.48 mg kg⁻ 1 , respectively), and Nacional trees grew on soils with low Cd content (0.188 ± 0.005 mg kg⁻ 1 ). Oxalate was present in all organs of the two cultivars. In mature leaves, oxalate content exceeded the limit of 5% per dry weight used to define extreme oxalate accumulators. The crystalline form predominated in branches and mature leaves (82-92%), whereas the soluble form predominated in nibs (67-82%). Calcium oxalate crystal size varied from <1 μm (generally agglomerated as crystal sand) to a few tens of μm (faceted crystals). Log CaOx and Cd concentrations were positively correlated in branches (R 2  = 0.77, p = 0.002) and roots (R 2  = 0.71, p = 0.005), whereas in nibs, the oxalate content was almost constant among conditions. This research focuses on the design of a three-finger adaptive gripper using additive manufacturing and electromechanical actuators, with the purpose of providing a low-cost, efficient, and reliable solution for easy integration with any robot arm for industrial and research purposes. During the development phase, 3D printing materials were employed in the gripper's design, with Polylactic Acid (PLA) filament used for the rigid mechanical components and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) for the flexible membranes that distribute pressure to the resistive force sensors. Stress analysis and simulations were conducted to evaluate the performance of the components under load and to gradually refine the design of the adaptive gripper. It was ensured that the mechanism could integrate effectively with the robotic arm and be precisely controlled through a PID controller. Furthermore, the availability of spare parts in the local market was considered essential to guarantee easy and cost-effective maintenance. Tests were conducted on an actual robotic arm, and the designed gripper was able to effectively grasp objects such as a soda can and a pencil. The results demonstrated that the adaptive gripper successfully achieved various types of grasping, offering a scalable and economical solution that represents a significant contribution to the field of robotic manipulation in industrial applications.

Throughout history, food has played a fundamental role in the development of societies. An understanding of the diets of different cultures and their impact on health can provide valuable insights into their lifestyle. The identification of the animal remains found within two vessels is reported and, in addition, an assessment of whether the diet and soil composition of the period may be associated with toxic elements was carried out. The animal bones retrieved from the settlement, which dated from 25 to 203 cal AD, were identified as belonging to Zenaida cf. auriculata, commonly known as eared dove. Ancient starch was discovered in the sediments inside the vessels. These sediments, along with the pre-Hispanic soil collected in the study zone, showed moderate pollution, suggesting potential environmental contamination. For the first time, evidence that eared doves were part of the diet of the ancient inhabitants of Quito is presented, as shown by the occurrence of their bones within food processing utensils. Furthermore, the study highlights the possibility of environmental contamination due to volcanic eruptions that occurred during the Regional Development period from 500 BC to AD 500. Black Sigatoka is the most widespread banana disease worldwide. It is caused by Pseudocercospora fijiensis, a fungal pathogen known for developing resistance to fungicides such as thiabendazole. Despite the increasing costs associated with the use of chemicals to control this disease, the pathogen's mechanisms for fungicide resistance are not fully understood. The metabolite profiles of P. fijiensis isolates with different levels of resistance to thiabendazole were characterized by GC-MS. A total of 33 isolates were obtained from symptomatic banana plants and the sensitivity of each isolate to thiabendazole was assessed at 0, 1, 10, 100, 1000, and 10000 μg.mL-1. Then, the metabolite profile of each isolate was assessed using GC-MS. Metabolites such as hexadecanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid, octadecadienoic acid and octadecanoic acid were significantly over-accumulated in the presence of thiabendazole at 10 μg.mL-1. Phosphoric acid, L-proline, and D-allose increased in concentration with time in the presence of 100 μg.mL-1 of thiabendazole, and mannonic acid, 1-hexadecanol, D-sorbitol and tetracosanoic acid were only detected in the presence of the fungicide. Metabolic pathways including that of fructose, mannose metabolism, the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, and ABC transporters were upregulated in resistant isolates. Our findings show an increment of tetracosanoic (myristic) acid suggesting a possible β-tubulin-compensation mechanism in resistant isolates. The presence of myristic acid promoted the generation of diacylglycerol kinase δ which facilitated the production of β-tubulin in other studies. Additionally, important changes in the metabolite profiles were observed as soon as six hours after exposure to the fungicide showing an early response of the pathogen. Human milk (HM) is a complex biofluid rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds essential for infant health. Recent advances in omics technologies-such as proteomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics-have shed light on the influence of HM on bone development and health. This review discusses the impact of various HM components, including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and hormones, on bone metabolism and skeletal growth. Proteins like casein and whey promote calcium absorption and osteoblast differentiation, supporting bone mineralization. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids like docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contribute to bone health by modulating inflammatory pathways and regulating osteoclast activity. Additionally, human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) act as prebiotics, improving gut health and calcium bioavailability while influencing bone mineralization. Hormones present in HM, such as insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), leptin, and adiponectin, have been linked to infant growth, body composition, and bone density. Research has shown that higher IGF-1 levels in breast milk are associated with increased weight gain, while leptin and adiponectin influence fat mass and bone metabolism. Emerging studies have also highlighted the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating key processes like adipogenesis and bone homeostasis. Furthermore, microbiome-focused techniques reveal HM's role in establishing a balanced infant gut microbiota, indirectly influencing bone development by enhancing nutrient absorption. Although current findings are promising, comprehensive longitudinal studies integrating omics approaches are needed to fully understand the intricate relationships among maternal diet, HM composition, and infant bone health. Bridging these gaps could offer novel dietary strategies to optimize skeletal health during infancy, advancing early-life nutrition science.

Penaeus vannamei is the main species of shrimp farmed worldwide, and for Ecuador it is the first non-oil economic sector. However, various pathogens, including white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), threaten the sustainability of shrimp farming. P. vannamei larvae are susceptible to WSSV infection via vertical or horizontal transmission. To decrease the incidence of WSSV in PLs, a bioassay was performed by exposing P. vannamei shrimp (PL25), which were negative for WSSV and white spot disease (WSD), to two protective factors, water temperature (T = 24 °C and T = 31 °C), and immunestimulation using β-1,3-glucans (BG) (with and without BG added to the food), using a crossed two-factor design, for 20 days. The incidence of WSSV and WSD was modeled using generalized linear model (GLM). The strength of the association between the response and explanatory variables was estimated using the odds ratio [Exp (Beta)] and interpreted as the level of risk for the incidence of WSSV or WSD in one of the categories compared to the baseline category in the GLM. Odds ratios were considered significant if their 95 % confidence interval did not include the value 1. The results showed that BG had a significant negative effect on the number of WSSV-positive animals. In addition, a lower probability of WSSV infection was determined by combining 31 °C and BG. In this treatment, the WSD injuries were almost undetectable. Most larvae shrimps affected by WSD exhibited injuries to the antennal gland and connective tissue. In situ hybridization analysis revealed that 29 % of shrimp, initially negative by histology, were positive for WSSV. The virus was detected mainly in the nervous tissue of the head, epithelium, connective tissue of the head appendages, and the oral region surrounding the integumental glands. Apoptosis analysis showed a weak signal in nerve tissue but was more intense in epithelial cells of the head appendages, in association with cuticular damage. According to the findings, WSSV could disseminate among shrimp populations by infecting them through the TG and epithelium of the head appendage, followed by connective tissue and nervous tissue. The Republic of Ecuador is developing a comprehensive plan to meet the increasing residential, industrial, and commercial energy demands. With a population of 17.08 million in 2018, the country is experiencing an annual average energy growth of approximately 7.13% until 2027. This research aims to model the incorporation of new and proposed power plants strategically planned to cater to the expanding demand needs. Ensuring that our existing energy infrastructure can adequately meet the current and growing needs of the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors should be made possible. In this paper, we present several hypotheses that need to be made to identify the potential demands for residential, industrial, and commercial requirements, making it more accessible to build new facilities that use renewable energy. Traditional and unconventional renewable energy sources, such as hydro-power, wind, and solar power, are being explored to generate electricity. The research employs quantitative methodology, beginning with gathering information and a detailed data analysis. Subsequently, a scenario-based model will examine the impact on energy demand and supply from 2020 to 2035. The results show that the Santiago hydroelectric project is becoming essential for the country's energy development and that the current national power system will only be able to supply the electricity demand when the industrial city of Posorja is being developed. We suggest that to maintain Ecuador's electricity trade balance as an electricity exporter, we continue with the energy investment plans currently issued by the Ministry of Energy and Mines. This study is relevant for establishing global financing arrangements involving the public and private sectors. In doing so, we can meet our hypothetical scenarios, ensuring that all energy needs are met by 2035. Objective: This study aims to provide rapid and up-to-date evidence on the effectiveness of Health at Every Size (HAES) interventions compared to controls or other conventional approaches in individuals with overweight or obesity, with the goal of developing more effective and body-diverse respectful strategies., Methods: A review of literature was carried out using the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and SciELO. Research articles were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Extracted data included study characteristics (design, setting, population demographics, sample size, intervention characteristics, study duration, and follow-up period) and health-related outcomes., Results: The search yielded 324 articles, of which 20 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The majority of studies focused on lifestyle improvement, particularly in nutrition, body image, and relationships with food, utilizing a HAES approach. Additionally, other studies examined outcomes such as general well-being, body weight, body composition, cardiovascular risk, and changes in physical activity. Long-term results were particularly noted in studies incorporating physical activity interventions., Conclusion: HAES interventions appear to be a feasible strategy for promoting overall health and wellness, regardless of body size or shape. The influence of magnetic fields on biological systems, including fermentation processes and cocoa bean fermentation, is an area of study that is under development. Mechanisms, such as magnetosensitivity, protein conformational changes, changes to cellular biophysical properties, ROS production, regulation of gene expression, and epigenetic modifications, have been identified to explain how magnetic fields affect microorganisms and cellular processes. These mechanisms can alter enzyme activity, protein stability, cell signaling, intercellular communication, and oxidative stress. In cacao fermentation, electromagnetic fields offer a potential means to enhance the sensory attributes of chocolate by modulating microbial metabolism and optimizing flavor and aroma development. This area of study offers possibilities for innovation and the creation of premium food products. In this review, these aspects will be explored systematically and illustratively.

A plethora of infectious and non-infectious causes of bovine abortions and perinatal mortalities (APM) have been reported in literature. However, due to financial limitations or a potential zoonotic impact, many laboratories only offer a standard analytical panel, limited to a preestablished number of pathogens. To improve the cost-efficiency of laboratory diagnostics, it could be beneficial to design a targeted analytical approach for APM cases, based on maternal and environmental characteristics associated with the prevalence of specific abortifacient pathogens. The objective of this retrospective observational study was to implement a machine learning pipeline (MLP) to predict maternal and environmental factors associated with infectious APM. Our MLP based on a greedy ensemble approach incorporated a standard tuning grid of four models, applied on a dataset of 1590 APM cases with a positive diagnosis that was achieved by analyzing an extensive set of abortifacient pathogens. Production type (dairy/beef), gestation length, and season were successfully predicted by the greedy ensemble, with a modest prediction capacity which ranged between 63 and 73 %. Besides the predictive accuracy of individual variables, our MLP hierarchically identified predictor importance causes of associated environmental/maternal characteristics of APM. For instance, in APM cases that happened in beef cows, season at APM (spring/summer) was the most important predictor with a relative importance of 24 %. Furthermore, at the last trimester of gestation Trueperella pyogenes and Neospora caninum were the most important predictors of APM with a relative importance of 22 and 17 %, respectively. Interestingly, herd size came out as the most relevant predictor for APM in multiparous dams, with a relative importance of 12 %. Carboxylates generation from banana (peel and pulp), coffee, and cacao fermentation agro-waste, upon uncontrolled and controlled pHs of 6.6 (heat-driven methanogens inactivation) and 5.2 (pH inactivation), was studied. Regarding volatile fatty acids (VFAs), acetic was the highest for cocoa (96.2 g kg -1 TVS ) at pH 4.5. However, butyric was relevant for banana pulp (90.7 g kg -1 TVS ), at controlled pH 6.6. The highest medium chain fatty acid (MCFAs) level was hexanoic (cocoa, 3.5 g kg -1 TVS ), while octanoic reached a maximum of 2.8 g kg -1 TVS for coffee at pH 6.6. At pH 5.2 MCFAs yield was relatively low. Uncontrolled pH conditions, using banana resulted in superior VFAs production compared to controlled conditions. Thus, pH became a determining variable when deciding the time and kind of carboxylic acid to be recovered. This study investigates the differential responses of two maize genotypes, SC180 and SC168, to salt stress, aiming to elucidate the mechanisms underlying salinity tolerance and identify traits associated with improved stress resilience. Salinity stress, imposed by 150 mM NaCl, adversely affected various growth parameters in both genotypes. SC180 exhibited a more pronounced reduction in shoot length (13.6%) and root length (13.6%) compared to SC168, which showed minimal reductions (3.0% and 2.3%, respectively). Additionally, dry weight losses in SC180's leaves, stems, and roots were significantly greater than those in SC168. Under salinity stress, both genotypes accumulated Na + in all organs, with SC168 showing higher Na + concentrations. However, K + levels decreased more significantly in SC180's leaves than in SC168's. The study also assessed physiological responses, noting that SC180 experienced a substantial reduction in relative water content (RWC) in leaves (22.7%), while SC168's RWC remained relatively stable (5.15%). Proline accumulation, a marker for osmotic adjustment, increased 2.3-fold in SC168 compared onefold in SC180. Oxidative stress indicators, such as electrolyte leakage and hydrogen peroxide levels, were elevated in both genotypes under salt stress, with SC180 showing higher increases (48.5% and 48.7%, respectively) than SC168 (35.25% and 22.0%). Moreover, antioxidant enzymes (APX, CAT, POD, SOD, GR) activities were significantly enhanced in SC168 under salinity stress, whereas SC180 showed no significant changes in these activities. Stress indices, used to quantify and compare salinity tolerance, consistently ranked SC168 as more tolerant (average rank = 1.08) compared to SC180 (average rank = 1.92). Correlation analyses further confirmed that SC168's superior tolerance was associated with better Na + regulation, maintenance of K + levels, and a robust antioxidant defense system. In conclusion, SC168 demonstrated greater resilience to salinity stress, attributed to its efficient ion regulation, stable water status, enhanced osmotic adjustment, and strong antioxidant response. Fusarium wilt of Banana (FWB) caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) poses a significant threat to the banana industry, with current inadequate control measures. This study evaluated the antifungal potential of nine Streptomyces strains isolated from Antarctic soil samples, using Casein-Starch media to stimulate the production of antifungal compounds. The inhibition spectrum against Foc was assessed under laboratory conditions using the well diffusion on Mueller-Hinton agar, with antifungal activity measured in arbitrary units (AU/mL) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tested using ethyl acetate extracts. Among the nine isolates, K6 and E7 were closely related to Streptomyces polyrhachis and Streptomyces fildesensis , exhibited significant antifungal activity, with K6 and E7 showing 320 and 80 AU/mL, and MIC values of 250 and >500 ppm, respectively. This research evaluates the use of cassava bagasse starch and oregano essential oil (OEO) in an active film. For comparison, films of cassava starch (CS) and cassava bagasse starch (BS) were prepared with OEO at 1, 2, and 3 %. Physical, thermal, mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties were determined. BS films presented higher thickness, WVP, ΔE, modulus of elasticity, and maximum stress, but lower strain at break compared to CS films. Adding OEO into the films increased their thickness, moisture, solubility, WVP and strain at break. However, maximum stress, modulus of elasticity, and T dmax decreased. The CS films added with 3 % of OEO showed higher WVP (6.32 × 10 -14  kg m/m 2 .s.Pa), intermediate solubility of 39 % and low maximum stress (0.19 MPa) while the BS film with 3 % of OEO presented 5.73 × 10 -14  kg m/m 2 .s.Pa, 30 % and 0.39 MPa, respectively. The increase from 1 % to 3 % of OEO increased the total phenolic compound content and antioxidant activity of the films by 1.3-fold and 3.7-fold, respectively. The incorporation of 3 % OEO in the films inhibited the growth of S. aureus and E. coli . The emergence and re-emergence of arthropod-borne viruses is a public health threat. For routine surveillance in public health laboratories, cost-effective and reproducible methods are essential. In this review, we address the technical considerations of high-throughput sequencing methods (HTS) for arbovirus surveillance in national health laboratories, focusing on pre-sequencing, sequencing, and post-sequencing approaches, underlining the importance of robust wet and dry laboratory workflows for reproducible analysis. We aim to provide insights for researchers and clinicians interested in arbovirus, diagnosis, and surveillance by discussing current advances in sequencing methods and bioinformatics pipelines applied to arboviruses.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an essential food for half of the global population and is vital in maintaining global food security. Climate change, increasing population and recent incident of COVID pandemic has generated financial burden and threaten the global food security. Due to theses factors rice cultivation also has to face significant challenges. frequent weather changes pose a considerable challenge to agricultural planning, which was previously relaying on consistent seasonal variations. In this context, rice cultivation is particularly sensitive to cold, where its development and productivity inhibited by low temperatures (< 18 °C). Developing rice varietes with low temprature tolerence and good yield potential is one of the major goals of current breeding efforts of plant scientists. For this purpose, short duration and early rice varieties are most favorable to avoid cold stress and yield more in less number of days. this study was designed to investigate the effect of low temperatures on different rice varieties. the study was designed to identify low temprature tolerent genotypes with early and regular cultivation. For this, thirty-four genotypes were evaluated in two gorwing seasons (2018-2019) with four different sowing times. Statistically sowing time showed significant interaction between all yield contributing parameters. The data indicate that exposure to low temperatures during the reproductive phase prolongs the maturation period of the crop, also length of the panicle and the fertility of the spikelets drops, resulting in a significant decrease in the production of sensitive varieties. Some varieties are more sensitive to cold stress compared to others. In the Egyptian context, Giza176, Sakha104, and Sakha107 are recommended for early cultivation, while the genotypes Giza 179, Sakha101, Sakha104, and GZ 9730-1-1-1-1 are indicated for the normal cultivation period. The Sakha104 variety is particularly notable, as it is recommended for both purposes. In addition, the data obtained in this study provide valuable information for selecting rice varieties suitable for double cropping in the North Delta of Egypt. This paper presents a software architecture to implement a task-motion planning system that can improve human-robot interactions by including social behavior when social robots provide services related to object manipulation to users. The proposed system incorporates four main modules: knowledge reasoning, perception, task planning, and motion planning for autonomous service. This system adds constraints to the robot motions based on the recognition of the object affordance from the perception module and environment states from the knowledge reasoning module. Thus, the system performs task planning by adjusting the goal of the task to be performed, and motion planning based on the functional aspects of the object, enabling the robot to execute actions consistent with social behavior to respond to the user's intent and the task environment. The system is verified through simulated experiments consisting of several object manipulation services such as handover and delivery. The results show that, by using the proposed system, the robot can provide different services depending on the situation, even if it performs the same tasks. In addition, the system demonstrates a modular structure that enables the expansion of the available services by defining additional actions and diverse planning modules.

A new fusagra-like virus infecting papaya (Carica papaya L.) was genetically characterized. The genome of the virus, provisionally named "papaya sticky fruit-associated virus" (PSFaV), is a single molecule of double-stranded RNA, 9,199 nucleotides (nt) in length, containing two discontinuous open reading frames. Pairwise sequence comparisons based on complete RNA-dependent-RNA-polymerase (RdRp) sequences revealed identity of 79.4% and 83.3% at the nt and amino acid (aa) level, respectively, to babaco meleira-like virus (BabMelV), an uncharacterized virus sequence discovered in babaco (Vasconcellea x heilbornii) in Ecuador. Additional plant-associated viruses with sequence identity in the 50% range included papaya meleira virus (PMeV) isolates from Brazil. Phylogenetic analysis based on the amino acid sequences of the capsid protein (CP), RdRp, and CP-RdRp fusion protein genes placed PSFaV in a group within a well-supported clade that shares a recent ancestor with Sclerotium rolfsii RNA virus 2 and Phlebiopsis gigantea mycovirus dsRNA 2, two fungus-associated fusagraviruses. In this study, the relative contributions of main emission sources to the typical ambient concentrations of key pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ) in Guayaquil, Ecuador, were investigated. A previous urban emissions inventory for mobile sources was expanded to include other transportation means and main industrial activities using the EMEP/EEA methodology to achieve this objective. The WRF/CALMET/CALPUFF modeling system was used to simulate the annual spatiotemporal distribution of air pollution in the city. According to the model, NO 2 concentrations exceed the yearly value and 1-h Ecuadorian standards (40 and 200 μg/m 3 ) in 1 % and 6 % of the cells of the modeling domain, respectively. These hotspots related to local sources were located in the northwest center of the city. The contributions of the manufacturing sector, thermal power plants, ports, airports, and road traffic were assessed individually, and the results indicated that air quality in the study area was strongly dominated by road traffic. The contributions of NO 2 , CO, PM 10 , and PM 2.5 at the city level reached 76 %, 96 %, 90 %, and 92 % of the annual mean, respectively. In the case of SO 2 , the manufacturing sector made the most significant contribution (75 %), followed by thermal power plants (16 %). The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant capacity by spectrophotometric methods, the in vitro and in vivo antifungal effect against Lasiodiplodia theobromae and the constitution of the essential oils (EO) of oregano and thyme in comparison with their commercial counterparts. The results showed by the EOs of extracted thyme (T-EO), commercial thyme (CT-EO), extracted oregano (O-EO) and commercial oregano (CO-EO), demonstrated antioxidant profiles with a radical neutralizing potential (DPPH•) of IC 50 : 1.11 ± 0.019; 1.08 ± 0.05; 40.56 ± 0.227 and 0.69 ± 0.004 mg/mL, respectively. They also revealed a ferric ion reducing capacity (FRAP) of 93.05 ± 0.52; 97.72 ± 0.42; 21.85 ± 0.57 and 117.24 ± 0.64 mg Eq Trolox/g. A reduction in β-carotene degradation of 65.71 ± 0.04; 51.97 ± 0.66; 43.58 ± 1.56 and 57.46 ± 1.56 %. A total phenol content (Folin-Ciocalteu) of 132.97 ± 0.77; 141.89 ± 2.56; 152.04 ± 0.10 and 25.66 ± 0.40 mg EGA/g. Chemical characterization performed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed that the respective major components of the samples were thymol (T-EO: 45.78 %), thymol (CT-EO: 43.57 %), alloaromadendrene (O-EO: 25.17 %) and carvacrol (CO-EO: 62.06 %). Regarding antifungal activity, it was evident that at the in vitro level, both commercial EOs had a MIC of 250 ppm while the extracted thyme EO had a MIC of 500 ppm; In vivo studies demonstrated that the application of thyme EO had a behavior similar to the synthetic fungicide, slowing down rot in bananas under storage conditions. This study presents the complete genome sequence of a novel nege-like virus identified in whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci MEAM1), provisionally designated as whitefly negevirus 1 (WfNgV1). The virus possesses a single-stranded RNA genome comprising 11,848 nucleotides, organized into four open reading frames (ORFs). These ORFs encode the putative RNA-dependent-RNA-polymerase (RdRp, ORF 1), a glycoprotein (ORF 2), a structural protein with homology to those in the SP24 family, (ORF 3), and a protein of unknown function (ORF 4). Phylogenetic analysis focusing on RdRp and SP24 amino acid sequences revealed a close relationship between WfNgV1 and Bemisia tabaci negevirus 1, a negevirus sequence recently discovered in whiteflies from Israel. Both viruses form a clade sharing a most recent common ancestor with the proposed nelorpivirus and centivirus taxa. The putative glycoprotein from ORF 2 and SP24 (ORF 3) of WfNgV1 exhibit the characteristic topologies previously reported for negevirus counterparts. The present study, focused on pilgrimages as part of religious tourism, aimed to achieve the following objectives: Identify the motivations of the demand for religious tourism focused on pilgrimages; analyze the segmentation of the demand; identify the relationship between demand segments with satisfaction and loyalty; and establish the sociodemographic aspects that characterize demand segments. The study was conducted during the Pilgrimage of the Christ of Miracles in Lima, Peru. The sample was taken on-site from 384 tourists. The statistical techniques used were factor analysis and the k-means clustering method. The results reveal five motivational dimensions: Religious Experience, Belief Experience, Escape, Touristic Experience, and Shopping. Three attendee segments were also identified: Believers, related to belief experience; Religious, related to religious experience; and Passive, tourists with low motivations. The Religious segment had the highest satisfaction and loyalty levels among these groups. Sociodemographic differences were also found in the demand segments. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) plays a crucial role in global gold production. However, the adoption of poor mining practices or the use of mercury (Hg) in gold recovery processes has generated serious environmental contamination events. The focus of this study is assessing the concentration of Hg in surface waters within the coastal region of Ecuador. The results are used to conduct a human health risk assessment applying deterministic and probabilistic methods, specifically targeting groups vulnerable to exposure in affected mining environments. Between April and June 2022, 54 water samples were collected from rivers and streams adjacent to mining areas to determine Hg levels. In the health risk assessment, exposure routes through water ingestion and dermal contact were considered for both adults and children, following the model structures outlined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The results indicate elevated Hg concentrations in two of the five provinces studied, El Oro and Esmeraldas, where at least 88% and 75% of the samples, respectively, exceeded the maximum permissible limit (MPL) set by Ecuadorian regulations for the preservation of aquatic life. Furthermore, in El Oro province, 28% of the samples exceeded the MPL established for drinking water quality. The high concentrations of Hg could be related to illegal mining activity that uses Hg for gold recovery. Regarding the human health risk assessment, risk values above the safe exposure limit were estimated. Children were identified as the most vulnerable receptor. Therefore, there is an urgent need to establish effective regulations that guarantee the protection of river users in potentially contaminated areas. Finally, it is important to continue investigating the contamination caused by human practices in the coastal region.

Puerto de Cajas serves as a vital high-altitude passage in Ecuador, connecting the coastal region to the city of Cuenca. The stability of this rocky massif is carefully managed through the assessment of blocks and discontinuities, ensuring safe travel. This study presents a novel approach, employing rapid and cost-effective methods to evaluate an unexplored area within the protected expanse of Cajas. Using terrestrial photogrammetry and strategically positioned geomechanical stations along the slopes, we generated a detailed point cloud capturing elusive terrain features. We have used terrestrial photogrammetry for digitalization of the slope. Validation of the collected data was achieved by comparing directional data from Cloud Compare software with manual readings using a digital compass integrated in a phone at control points. The analysis encompasses three slopes, employing the SMR, Q-slope, and kinematic methodologies. Results from the SMR system closely align with kinematic analysis, indicating satisfactory slope quality. Nonetheless, continued vigilance in stability control remains imperative for ensuring road safety and preserving the site's integrity. Moreover, this research lays the groundwork for the creation of a publicly accessible 3D repository, enhancing visualization capabilities through Google Virtual Reality. This initiative not only aids in replicating the findings but also facilitates access to an augmented reality environment, thereby fostering collaborative research endeavors.

Interest in bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) has grown due to its purity, mechanical properties, and biological compatibility. To address the need for alternative carbon sources in the industrial production of BNC, this study focuses on banana leaves, discarded during harvesting, as a valuable source. Banana midrib juice, rich in nutrients and reducing sugars, is identified as a potential carbon source. An optimal culture medium was designed using a simplex-centroid mixing design and evaluated in a 10 L bioreactor. Techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the structural, thermal, and morphological properties of BNC. Banana midrib juice exhibited specific properties, such as pH (5.64), reducing sugars (15.97 g/L), Trolox (45.07 µM), °Brix (4.00), and antioxidant activity (71% DPPH). The model achieved a 99.97% R-adjusted yield of 6.82 g BNC/L. Physicochemical analyses revealed distinctive attributes associated with BNC. This approach optimizes BNC production and emphasizes the banana midrib as a circular solution for BNC production, promoting sustainability in banana farming and contributing to the sustainable development goals.

Ecuador is one of the world's leading producers of cacao beans, and Nacional x Trinitario cacao represents one of the most distinctive varieties due to its flavor and aroma characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the starter culture isolated from microbial diversity during the spontaneous fermentation of Nacional x Trinitario cacao. A total of 249 microbial isolates were obtained from spontaneous culture, with Lactiplantibacillus (45 %), Saccharomyces (17 %), and Acetobacter (2 %) being the most relevant genera for fermentation. Tolerance tests were conducted to select microorganisms for the starter culture. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum exhibited the highest tolerance at pH 5 and 6 % ethanol and tolerated concentrations up to 15 % for glucose and fructose. Acetobacter pasteurianus grew at pH 2 and 6 % ethanol, tolerating high sugar concentrations of up to 15 % for glucose and 30 % for fructose, with growth observed in concentrations up to 5 % for lactic and acetic acid. Subsequently, a laboratory-scale fermentation was conducted with the formulated starter culture (SC) comprising S. cerevisiae , L. plantarum , and A. pasteurianus , which exhibited high tolerance to various stress conditions. The fermentation increased alcoholic compounds, including citrusy, fruity aromas, and floral notes such as 2-heptanol and phenylethyl alcohol, respectively 1.6-fold and 5.6-fold compared to the control. Moreover, the abundance of ketones 2-heptanone and 2-nonanone increased significantly, providing sweet green herbs and fruity woody aromas. Cacao fermented with this SC significantly enhanced the favorable aroma-producing metabolites characteristic of Fine-aroma cacao. Developing countries such as Ecuador carry a heavy food safety burden but reports on the microbiological quality of their foods are scarce. In this investigation, the microbial diversity of 10 high-risk and mass-consumption street-vended foods including bolones, encebollado, food dressings, ceviche, chopped fruits, fruit juices, fruit salads, cheese, raw chicken, and ground beef in Quito, Guayaquil, and Cuenca, three major population centers in Ecuador, were evaluated using 16S rRNA gene High Throughput Sequencing. In total, 1,840 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were classified into 23 phyla, 253 families, 645 genera, and 829 species. In the tested food samples, Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were the most abundant phyla accounting for 97.41% of relative abundance (RA). At genus level, 10 dominant genera were identified: Acinetobacter (12.61% RA), Lactococcus (12.08% RA), Vibrio (8.23% RA), Weissella (7.43% RA), Aeromonas (6.18% RA), Photobacterium (6.32% RA), Pseudomonas (3.92% RA), Leuconostoc (3.51% RA), Klebsiella (3.49% RA), and Cupriavidus (2.86% RA). The highest microbial diversity indices were found in raw chicken, encebollados, fruit salads, and fruit juices from Guayaquil and Cuenca. From sampled foods, 29 species were classified as food spoilage bacteria and 24 as opportunistic pathogenic bacteria. Two groups associated with human diseases were identified, including 11 enteric species and 26 species of fecal bacteria. The occurrence of recognized and opportunistic pathogenic bacteria, as well as enteric and fecal microorganisms, in the street-vended foods indicated extensive risks for the consumers' health. Background: Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) biopesticides are of interest for the abatement of insect vectors of pathogenic bacteria such as 'Candidatus Liberibacter', which infects both its psyllid and plant hosts. Silencing of genes essential for psyllids, or for Liberibacter, is anticipated to lead to mortality or impeded bacterial multiplication. Foliar delivery is preferred for biopesticide application; however, the cuticle impedes dsRNA penetration into the vasculature. Here, conditions were established for wounding tomato leaves using ultraviolet light amplification by stimulated emissions of radiation (UV-LASER) to promote dsRNA penetration into leaves and vasculature., Results: UV-LASER treatment with application of select adjuvants/surfactants resulted in vascular delivery of 100-, 300- and 600-bp dsRNAs that, in general, were correlated with size. The 100-bp dsRNA required no pretreatment, whereas 300- and 600-bp dsRNAs entered the vasculature after UV-LASER treatment only and UV-LASER adjuvant/surfactant treatment, respectively. Of six adjuvant/surfactants evaluated, plant-derived oil combined with an anionic organosilicon compound performed most optimally. Localization of dsRNAs in the tomato vasculature was documented using fluorometry and fluorescence confocal microscopy. The biological activity of in planta-delivered dsRNA (200-250 bp) was determined by feeding third-instar psyllids on tomato leaves post UV-LASER adjuvant/surfactant treatment, with or without psyllid cdc42- and gelsolin dsRNAs. Gene knockdown was quantified by quantitative, real-time polymerase chain reaction with reverse transcription (RT-qPCR) amplification. The present work determines the gaps between expectations and perceptions about the quality of the service that patients and families receive in primary health care (PHC) in Guayas, Ecuador. A descriptive, cross-sectional and non-experimental study was carried out, primarily prospective with respect to expectations and retrospective with respect to perceptions of service quality. For its development, a random sample of 533 users from the northern and southern urban sectors of the city of Guayaquil was determined, who were asked to answer a questionnaire. Their responses were collected using a seven-point scale intended to determine magnitudes of gaps, which were confirmed using the Wilcoxon test. The results reveal a significant gap between women, specifically those over 21 years of age who have studied at the technological and university level, and those who work. In general, the five dimensions of quality present significant gaps, highlighting that the lowest gap occurs when the medical professional listens attentively and treats the patient with kindness. Instead, the largest gap occurs because there are no available or easily accessible times for medical appointments. Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a lethal fungal species that parasitizes vertebrates and is associated with the worldwide decline of amphibian populations. The development of sensitive, rapid detection methods, particularly DNA-based techniques, is critical for effective management strategies. This study evaluates the efficacy of DNA extraction and a portable PCR device in a mountable field laboratory setup for detecting Bd near the habitats of three critically endangered Atelopus toad species in Ecuador. We collected skin swabs from Atelopus balios, A. nanay, and A. bomolochos, and environmental DNA (eDNA) samples from streams in Andean and coastal regions of Ecuador. For eDNA, a comparison was made with duplicates of the samples that were processed in the field and in a standard university laboratory. Our findings revealed Bd detection in eDNA and swabs from 6 of 12 water samples and 10 of 12 amphibian swab samples. The eDNA results obtained in the field laboratory were concordant with those obtained under campus laboratory conditions. These findings highlight the potential of field DNA-based monitoring techniques for detecting Bd in amphibian populations and their aquatic habitats, particularly in remote areas. Geopolymers are inorganic crosslinked polymers with much less carbon footprint than ordinary Portland cement. This dataset provides a comprehensive collection of vibrational data for the purpose of structural health monitoring, particularly focusing on the detection of bolt loosening in offshore wind turbine jacket foundations. The data set comprises 780 comma-separated values (CSV) files, each corresponding to specific experimental conditions, including various structural states of the wind turbine's support structure. These states are systematically varied considering three main aspects: the amplitude of a white noise (WN) signal, the type of bolt damage, and the level at which damage has occurred. The data were meticulously collected using eight triaxial accelerometers (PCB R Piezotronic model 356A17), strategically placed at different locations on a scaled-down replica of an offshore jacket-type wind turbine. This setup facilitated the acquisition of detailed vibrational data through a National Instruments' data acquisition (DAQ) system, comprising six input modules (NI 9234 model) housed in a chassis (cDAQ model). The white noise signal, simulating wind disturbance at the nacelle, was produced by a modal shaker and varied in three amplitudes (0.5, 1, and 2), directly proportional to the induced vibration in the wind turbine. The dataset uniquely captures the vibrational behaviour under different scenarios of bolt loosening in the turbine's foundation. The conditions include a healthy state (bolts tightened to 12 Nm) and various degrees of loosening (bolts loosened to 9 Nm, 6 Nm, and completely absent), examined at four distinct levels of the turbine's base structure. This granular approach offers a nuanced view of how varying degrees of bolt loosening impact the vibrational characteristics of the structure. The value of this dataset lies in its potential for wide-ranging applications in the field of structural health monitoring. Swarming motility is a type of movement used by pathogenic flagellated bacteria as virulence factor to colonize surfaces and cause damage to the host. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a pathogenic flagellated bacterium that increases its virulence by switching from swimmer to swarming cells. The hosts of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus include farmed shrimp. Therefore, methods to detect and quantify this movement are important to control shrimp diseases caused by pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus strains. We developed an optimized swarming motility assay by identifying the most optimal type of agar, and drying time of the culture medium, agar concentration and volume of the bacterial culture to achieve the fastest swarming motility during the migration of V. parahaemolyticus on Petri dishes during a 24-hour incubation period. The method includes data analysis that could be used as a tool to identify potential anti-virulence products by comparing the slopes of the linearized diameters of the swarming halos of bacteria treated with the products, as they migrate on Petri dishes over a 24-hour incubation period. This study aimed to identify the motivations of sports tourists to attend Soccer World Cups and to determine the motivational dimensions that predict their satisfaction. The research took place in Doha, the capital of Qatar, during the FIFA World Cup in 2022, where 503 valid questionnaires were collected. Exploratory factor analysis and linear regression with the Enter method were used for data analysis. The results show four motivational dimensions: Sports Passion, Escape & Relaxation, Patriotism & Attachment, and Recreation. Additionally, a positive and significant relationship was found between the Escape & Relaxation factor and overall satisfaction. In contrast, a negative correlation was identified between the Patriotism & Attachment dimension and satisfaction. Gold mining activity is a source of supply in many areas of the world, and especially in developing countries, it is practiced illegally and by applying unsafe techniques. Particularly in Ecuador, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is widespread, and it is based on the use of toxic substances, such as mercury (Hg), in gold recovery. Hg is a heavy metal that is water-insoluble, which, once mobilized, poses a threat to both the environment and human health. This study analyzes Hg concentrations in the six provinces of Napo, Sucumbíos, Orellana, Pastaza, Morona Santiago, and Zamora Chinchipe of the Ecuadorian Amazon region to conduct a human health risk assessment. Significant differences in Hg levels were found between provinces, but concentrations were below MPL imposed by Ecuadorian regulations everywhere. Nevertheless, a worrisome picture emerges, especially with regard to the most vulnerable receptors represented by the child population. There are multiple factors of incidence that may affect the possible future development of the phenomenon, and with reference to the social, economic, and environmental context of the region, it can be concluded that it may be appropriate to plan further investigation to arrive at a more comprehensive assessment. The results of this study can be used by decision makers to plan further investigation and to implement monitoring networks, risk mitigation strategies, and groundwater protection measures.

The use of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) or industrial wastes as a partial replacement for cement in the production of concrete is an urgent need in the construction industry due to cement's growing environmental challenges and rising cost. In respect of this, we conducted research work on proportioning binary concrete mixes. Fly ash (FA) replaced 10 %, 20 %, and 30 % of the cement, while silica fume (SF) replaced 5 %, 10 %, and 15 % of the cement. A control concrete mix was also developed with 100 % cement and no SCM. The results showed no increase in compressive strength for FA concrete compared to control at the early age of 3-28 days, but a maximum increase in compressive strength of 4 % was discovered at a later age of 56 days for concrete with 20 % FA. For 5 % SF concrete, a considerable strength increase of 15 % was seen at the early age of 3 days. Like with FA concrete, 2 % improvement in strength was recorded at the later age of 56 days for 10 % SF concrete. This study further focused on the concrete's temporal evolution of compressive strength by developing a strength evolution model (SEM) using nonlinear regression analysis at a 95 % confidence level. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the correlation between the model values and the experimental results. For comparison, the fib Model Code 2010 was applied to the experimental data, and a good agreement was observed among the proposed model, the fib Model values, and the experimental results. The proposed model can be expanded to address further regression-related problems. Finally, environmental life cycle assessment revealed that utilizing 10 %, 20 %, and 30 % of FA lowered Global Warming Potential (GWP) by 9 %, 19 %, and 29 %, respectively. Cadmium (Cd) concentrations in cacao often exceed food limits. Recently, it was shown that cacao bean fermentation enhances Cd solubility, opening potential for Cd mitigation in cacao products. This study was set-up to identify changes in Cd speciation during fermentation. X-Ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) complemented with speciation calculations, were used on samples collected from high and low Cd farms, that were subjected to a fermentation-like incubation that reached high temperatures (>45 °C) and acidic pH (<5). Incubation decreased nib Cd concentration up to a factor 1.5 and changed Cd complexation in high Cd beans from sulphur to oxygen ligands, likely due to pH changes. In beans with lower Cd concentrations, Cd was complexed before and after incubation with oxygen-ligands. A combination of pH changes and/or phytate breakdown may explain the migration of Cd outward from the nib. The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) is a citrus pest and insect vector of " Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus", the causal agent of citrus greening disease. Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) biopesticides that trigger RNA interference (RNAi) offer an alternative to traditional insecticides. Standardized laboratory screening of dsRNA requires establishing the minimal effective concentration(s) that result in effective RNAi "penetrance" and trigger RNAi, resulting in one or more measurable phenotypes, herein, significant gene knockdown and the potential for mortality. In this study, knockdown was evaluated for a range of dsRNA concentrations of three ACP candidate genes, clathrin heavy chain ( CHC ), vacuolar ATPase subunit A ( vATPase-A ), and sucrose non-fermenting protein 7 ( Snf7 ). Gene knockdown was quantified for ACP teneral adults and 3rd instar nymphs allowed a 48 h ingestion-access period (IAP) on 10, 50,100, 200, and 500 ng/µL dsRNA dissolved in 20% sucrose followed by a 5-day post-IAP on orange jasmine shoots. Significant gene knockdown ( p < 0.05) in ACP third instar nymphs and adults ranged from 12-34% and 18-39%, 5 days post-IAP on dsRNA at 10-500 and 100-500 ng/µL, respectively. The threshold concentration beyond which no significant gene knockdown and adult mortality was observed post-48 h IAP and 10-day IAP, respectively, was determined as 200 ng/µL, a concentration indicative of optimal RNAi penetrance.

Banana starch has a highly resistant starch (RS) and slow-digested starch (SDS) content, making it attractive as a functional ingredient. Unfortunately, banana starch requires modification processes due to the loss of RS and SDS during gelatinization because of its thermolabile characteristics. This study explores the effect of banana starch modification by enzymatic, heat moisture treatment (HMT) and dual modification (HMT+ enzymatic) on its nutritional (RS, SDS) and functional properties (hydration, structural, gelation, rheological). HMT and dual modifications decrease RS (from 44.62 g/100 g to 16.62 and 26.66 g/100 g, respectively) and increase SDS (from 21.72 g/100 g to 33.91 and 26.95 g/100 g, respectively) in raw starch but induce structural changes that enhance RS (from 3.10 g/100 g to 3.94 and 4.4 g/100 g, respectively) and SDS (from 2.58 g/100 g to 9.58 and 11.48 g/100 g) thermo-resistance in gelled starch. Also, changes in the functional properties of starches were evidenced, such as weaker gels (hardness < 41 g), lower water absorption (<12.35 g/g), high starch solubility (>1.77 g/100 g) and increased gelatinization temperature. The COVID-19 pandemic generated diverse impacts and responses in agricultural value chains worldwide. Cocoa is a key crop for Ecuadorian exports, and the analysis of effects the pandemic had on value chain actors contributes to the understanding of their individual capacities to coping with a major shock. The purpose of this study was to assess the number and severity of impacts and responses implemented by two links in the cocoa value chain to the pandemic, based on a survey of 158 cocoa farmers and 52 cocoa intermediaries from the main cocoa-producing provinces of the northern coast of Ecuador in 2021. Surveyed farmers and part of the intermediaries form part of the sustainability program of a large Swiss chocolate manufacturer. The impacts and responses reported were grouped into seven resources according to the Activity System Approach. Then, a comparison between groups was applied using the Wilcoxon rank sum test for nonparametric data, determining the most severe impacts and effective resilience responses among the actors. The results reveal that farmers and intermediaries were similarly affected by the pandemic, reporting 21 and 16 negative impacts, respectively. Farmers experienced a higher number and severity of impacts on financial and social resources, while intermediaries on human and material resources. The strongest impact was the loss of sales, reported by 65% of farmers and 58% of intermediaries. Farmers implemented more social responses that they judged highly effective, while intermediaries implemented more human responses that they judged highly effective. Public policy should enhance the social resources of farmers by strengthening their associativity and the capacities of their members, as mechanisms to mitigate their vulnerability to future health and climate crises. Mining activity drives economic development and has established itself as one of the main industrial spheres globally. However, illegal, and artisanal gold mining, which uses mercury (Hg), is a major source of global pollution. Hg is highly toxic and persistent in the environment, affecting human health and the ecosystem. The objective of this research is to; (a) analyze Hg concentrations in surface waters of nine provinces of the Andean region of Ecuador and compare them with the maximum permissible limits of Ecuadorian regulations, and (b) evaluate the health risk of people exposed to waters with high Hg content through residential and recreational scenarios. In this study, 147 water samples from rivers and streams were analyzed. The results revealed worrying levels of Hg, especially in the provinces of Azuay and Loja where Hg values of up to 0.0913 mg/L and 0.0387 mg/L, respectively, were detected. In addition, it was found that 45% of the samples did not meet the water quality criteria for the preservation of aquatic life, which represents a severe risk to the ecosystem. The probabilistic risk analysis yielded values that exceeded the acceptable exposure limit for adults and children in residential settings in Azuay and Loja, while in the recreational scenario the safe exposure limit was exceeded for both receptors only in the province of Azuay. The elevated presence of Hg in the provinces, mainly in Azuay and Loja, possibly related to illegal gold mining activity, represents a threat to water quality and aquatic life in the Andean region of Ecuador. Children are especially vulnerable, and effective regulation is required to ensure the safety of the population. This study provides valuable information for decision makers regarding the risk associated with Hg exposure in areas of mining activity in the Ecuadorian Andean region. Marine sediments are a useful environmental assessment matrix as they naturally trap toxic substances of anthropogenic origin and thus have higher concentrations of these than the surrounding water. Therefore, developing methods for the sensitive, accurate, and inexpensive quantification of these substances is important, as the traditional techniques have various disadvantages. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of an in situ bismuth-modified carbon-fiber microelectrode (voltamperometric sensor) to simultaneously detect Pb, Cd, and Zn in marine sediments from Puerto Jeli in El Oro Province, Ecuador. This site is representative of the contamination levels present along the coast in this province. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry was applied, and the resulting linear regression for the metal quantification ranged from 12 to 50 μg mL -1 , with quantification limits for Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) of 18.69, 12.55, and 19.29 μg mL -1 , respectively. Thus, the quantification with the sensor was successful. Objective: The Western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, is a highly adaptable insect pest that has evolved resistance to a variety of control strategies, including insecticides. Therefore, it is interesting to examine how housekeeping proteins in WCR have been changed under WCR-controlling strategies. In this study, we focused on one of such proteins in WCR, a ubiquitous enzyme 5'-triphosphate nucleotidohydrolase (dUTPase). In the thymidine synthetic pathway, dUTPase hydrolyzes deoxyuridine triphosphate (dUTP) and supplies the substrate, deoxyuridine monophosphate, for the thymidylate synthase (TS). It decreases the cellular content of uracil, reducing uracil misincorporation into DNA. Suppressing the dUTPase activity, therefore, contributes to thymineless death. In this study, we investigated the enzymatic properties of dUTPase., Results: The WCR dUTPase gene (DUT) was synthesized with the addition of His-tag corresponding DNA sequence and then cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli, and the protein product was purified. The product of WCR DUT hydrolyzed dUTP and was designated as dUTPase. WCR dUTPase did not hydrolyze dATP, dTTP, dCTP, or dGTP. WCR dUTPase was analyzed via size-exclusion chromatography and exhibited a molecular weight corresponding to that of trimer. The present format can be interpreted as nuclear trimer type. Well-being is a widely studied construct in psychology. In 1989, Carol Ryff proposed the "Scale of Psychological Well-Being (SPWB)", which has been validated in multiple languages. The instrument assesses six dimensions of psychological well-being: Self-acceptance, Positive Relationships with Others, Autonomy, Environmental Mastery, Purpose in Life, and Personal Growth. In this article, we propose to enrich the traditional approach of directly interpreting the raw scores in each dimension by incorporating Compositional Data Analysis. This new approach aims to identify "what proportion" of each dimension constitutes well-being, which will allow us to analyze the interactions between the different dimensions of well-being and balance among them. To achieve this, we introduce two position ratios (PR1 and PR2) and a general adjustment indicator called the General Indicator of Subjective Psychological Well-Being (GISPW), which characterizes individuals in a compositional manner, providing a fresh perspective in the interpretation of psychological test results, specifically those related to PWB. The proposal is illustrated with three cases taken from a study involving 628 university students who completed the psychological well-being scale questionnaire. The results show that the GISPW, PR1, and PR2 obtained offer relevant information about the overall balance of each case in the different dimensions.

Illegal gold mining activities have contributed to the release and mobilization of Hg and environmental degradation in many parts of the world. This study aims to determine the concentration of Hg in five provinces of the Amazon Region of Ecuador, in addition to assessing the risk to human health of exposed populations, applying deterministic and probabilistic methods. For this purpose, 147 water samples were collected in rivers and streams crossing and/or located near mining areas. As a result, 100% of the samples analyzed exceeded the maximum permissible limit (MPL) according to the water quality criteria for the preservation of aquatic life of the Ecuadorian regulations, while 7% of the samples exceeded the MPL for drinking water. On the other hand, considering the European Environmental Quality Standard (EQS) for surface water bodies, in our study, 100% of the samples exceed the maximum permissible limit (0.07 µg/L), and with respect to the Canadian water quality guidelines, 35% of the samples exceed the permissible limit (0.001 mg/l) for drinking water, and 100% of the samples exceed the limit for life in water bodies (0.0001 mg/l). The risk assessment revealed that the probability of developing adverse health effects from exposure to Hg is below the recommended limits according to the probabilistic assessment; this is in relation to the criterion of residential and recreational use of water resources. However, it was identified that the child population doubles the acceptable systemic risk level according to the results of the deterministic assessment in the residential scenario. The current cadmium (Cd) regulations in chocolate threaten the cacao supply chain in several Latin American countries. The factors contributing to Cd accumulation in cacao beans have been poorly studied in Central America. The objective of this research was to identify the location of Cd hotspots as well as soil properties and management practices influencing the Cd concentration in cacao beans. A survey was carried out and soil, leaf, and beans were sampled from 150 farms in the three principal cacao-producing regions in Costa Rica. Total soil Cd concentration ranged from <0.1 to 1.05 (average 0.22 mg kg -1 ) which is typical of uncontaminated soils. Bean Cd concentration ranged from 0.12 to 3.23 (average 0.56 mg kg -1 ) and 22% of the samples exceeded the selected threshold of 0.80 mg kg -1 , located mostly in the Huetar Caribe and Huetar Norte regions. Variability in bean Cd concentration was better explained by total soil Cd and soil organic carbon (SOC) (R 2 = 0.62, p < 0.05). In addition, bean Cd concentration was affected by leaf nutrient content and management practices. Leaf Zn and P were positively correlated with bean Cd while K and Mn were negatively correlated (p < 0.05). Farm altitude and orchard age were also negatively correlated with bean Cd. Overall, this study shows that bean Cd contamination does not reach the extent observed in other Latin American countries such as Ecuador, Colombia, or Honduras. Nevertheless, research is needed in hotspot areas to assess the feasibility of potential mitigation strategies, particularly the use of mineral or organic soil amendments, which may allow better for planning in existing plantations or the expansion into new cacao-growing areas in the country., (© 2023.
