Brachial neuritis, or Parsonage-Turner syndrome, is a rare disease characterized by a sudden, self-limiting pain in the upper limb followed by weakness and atrophy of the shoulder girdle muscles. Bilateral brachial plexus involvement occurs in between 10 and 30% of the patients, but symptoms are usually asymmetrical. The most common etiological factors include infection (25 to 55%) and autoimmune conditions. Up to 16% of the patients infected by the new coronavirus variant (SARS-CoV2) had neuromuscular complications. Genital Mycoplasmas are implicated in adverse pregnancy outcomes and the development of infertility. However, the role of Mycoplasma fermentans in these outcomes has not been adequately studied; therefore, its participation in these sufferings requires further investigation. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of M. fermentans in pregnant and non-pregnant women. End-point PCR was used to analyze two hundred and twenty-eight endocervical samples for M. hominis , M. genitalium , M. fermentans , M. pirum , Ureaplasma urealyticum , and U. parvum diagnoses. The prevalence of Mycoplasma spp. was as follows: U. parvum was found in 83 samples (36.4%), U. urealyticum in 39 instances (17.1%), M. hominis in 36 (15.7%), M. fermentans in 32 (14%), M. genitalium in 15 (6.6%), and M. pirum in 0 samples. No association was found between the Mycoplasma spp. and some infertility conditions or adverse pregnancy. However, M. fermentans and M. hominis were found to be associated with bacterial vaginosis (RR = 3.4 CI 95% 1.85-6.3, p < 0.005). In conclusion, M. fermentans and M. hominis were isolated more often in women with bacterial vaginosis, which suggests that these bacteria could contribute to the development of this pathology.

Objective: This analysis assessed the association between regional income, screening coverage for cervical and breast cancer, and temporal trends in mortality from these cancers in different Brazilian health regions., Study Design: Spatiotemporal ecological study across 450 health regions of Brazil., Methods: Data from 2010 Demographic Census were used to assess income. Variations in income distribution within health regions were measured using the Gini index. Data on screening coverage were obtained from the Ambulatory Information System (SIA/SUS). Mortality was assessed from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 data. The average annual percentage change (AAPC) in cervical and breast cancer mortality rates, 2010-2018, was calculated by health regions. Results were presented in regional maps. The associations between income, screening coverage and mortality changes were estimated by bivariate spatial correlation., Results: Health regions located in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil had the greatest percentages of screening coverage and highest per capita incomes with the lowest Gini index values. From 2010 to 2018, mortality rates for cervical cancer were highest in the North and Northeast health regions. Breast cancer mortality rates were highest in the South and Southeast health regions. The AAPC in breast and cervical cancer mortality had a negative association with per capita income and screening coverage, and a positive association with the Gini index., Conclusions: There are large regional variations in income, screening coverage, and mortality rates for women with breast and cervical cancer. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse the attributable risk of mortality and DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) due to occupational carcinogens for lung cancer between 1990 and 2019 in Brazil and federation units, as well as its relationship with the Socio-demographic Index (SDI)., Study Design: Epidemiological study., Methods: This is an epidemiological study that used GBD 2019 (Global Burden of Disease Study) estimates of lung cancer mortality rates and DALYs attributable to occupational carcinogens. The relationship between these rates and SDI was assessed using panel data analysis., Results: In Brazil, occupational exposure to asbestos, silica and diesel vapours accounted for more than 85.00% of lung cancer deaths and DALYs attributable to occupational carcinogens in both sexes between 1990 and 2019. An increase in both rates was observed in women for almost all the occupational carcinogens assessed, especially in the North and Northeast regions of the country, with diesel vapours standing out the most., Conclusions: The present study highlighted the urge to characterise exposure to occupational risks for lung cancer, especially for the female population in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil., (Copyright © 2024 The Royal Society for Public Health. The scope of this article was to analyze the five-year survival rate among patients with laryngeal cancer treated in the Unified Health System in Brazil and its regions between January 2002 and June 2010. There is still scarce information in Brazil regarding the scale and survival rate of laryngeal cancer patients, which makes it difficult to adopt specific strategies for the control of the condition in the country. A retrospective cohort study based on the National Oncology Database was conducted, and the survival probability rate for laryngeal cancer according to age, sex and Brazilian regions/states was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The log-rank test was used to assess the differences observed, considering a 5% significance level. Survival in Brazil was estimated at 50.8% (95%CI: 49.9%-51.8%), being lower among male patients (49.1%; 95%CI: 48.10%-50.16%); between 50 and 60 years of age (48.4%; 95%CI: 46.7%-50.0%); for residents of the Northern region (45.5%; 95%CI: 39.5%-51.3%). The regional variation in the survival rate for laryngeal cancer in Brazil reveals disparities between Brazilian regions/states that may be linked to inequality of access to diagnosis and/or treatment.

Purpose: To compare 2-year clinical outcomes of primary hip arthroscopy with versus without capsular closure after interportal capsulotomy in patients with cam- or mixed-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)., Methods: Patients with cam- or mixed-type FAI undergoing primary hip arthroscopy with interportal capsulotomy were prospectively enrolled in this randomized controlled trial (RCT) and allocated into either capsular closure or no capsular closure groups. Patients were blinded to group allocation. Clinical outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at 2-year follow-up using the 12-item International Hip Outcome Tool (iHOT-12), modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS), and 6 subsections of the Copenhagen Hip and Groin Outcome Score (HAGOS). Complications and reoperations were noted., Results: Eighty-four patients (100 hips) were enrolled, 49 hips in the capsular closure group and 51 in the no capsular closure group, with no significant differences in age (28.5 ± 7.5 vs 30.4 ± 8.4, P = .261), body mass index (23.5 ± 3.0 vs 23.4 ± 1.9, P = .665), and sex distribution (female: 10.2% vs 13.7%, P = .760). Four patients were lost to follow-up (2.0% vs 5.9%, P = .618) and 6 had reoperations (6.1% vs 5.9%, P = 1.000), which left 45 hips per group for clinical assessment. There were no significant differences between groups in the net change of iHOT-12 (28.3 ± 19.6 vs 32.5 ± 22.7, P = .388), mHHS (7.6 ± 13.1 vs 7.5 ± 10.2, P = .954), and subsections of HAGOS (P > .05). Complication rates were also similar between groups (P > .05)., Conclusions: The present RCT compared primary hip arthroscopy with versus without capsular closure after interportal capsulotomy in a male-dominated, non-dysplastic, non-arthritic cohort with cam- or mixed-type FAI and found no significant differences in patient-reported clinical outcomes, complication rates, or reoperation rates., Level of Evidence: Level I, randomized controlled trial., (Copyright © 2024 Arthroscopy Association of North America. Purpose: To report 5-year outcomes of endoscopic iliopsoas tenotomy in patients with iliopsoas tendinopathy following total hip arthroplasty (THA) and determine whether clinical scores are associated with cup position., Methods: Patients who underwent endoscopic iliopsoas tenotomy for iliopsoas tendinopathy following THA (2014-2017) were contacted. Indications for endoscopic iliopsoas tenotomy after THA were groin pain during active hip flexion, exclusion of other causes of groin pain, and no pain relief after 6 months of conservative treatment. Pretenotomy cup inclination and anteversion were measured on radiographs; axial and sagittal cup overhang were measured on computed tomography (CT) scans. Oxford hip score (OHS), modified Harris hip score (mHHS), and groin pain were assessed., Results: The initial cohort comprised 16 men (17 hips) and 31 women (32 hips), aged 60.7 ± 10.6 years. Cup inclination and anteversion were, respectively, 46.2 ± 6.2° and 14.6 ± 8.4°, while axial and sagittal cup overhang were, respectively, 4.4 ± 4.0 mm and 6.9 ± 4.5 mm. At ≥5 years follow-up, four hips underwent cup and stem revision, two underwent isolated cup revision and one underwent secondary iliopsoas tenotomy. OHS improved by 23 ± 10 and mHHS improved by 31 ± 16. Posttenotomy groin pain was slight in 20.0%, mild in 17.5% and moderate in 12.5%. Regression analyses revealed that net change in mHHS decreased with sagittal cup overhang (β = -3.1; 95% confidence interval [CI] = -4.6 to -1.7; p < 0.001), but that there were no associations between cup position and net change in OHS., Conclusions: Endoscopic iliopsoas tenotomy provides good mid-term clinical outcomes in patients with iliopsoas tendinopathy following THA. Objective: Patients with cancer often undergo multiple extended treatments that decrease their quality of life. However, the quality of life of women with breast cancer after they undergo treatment remains underexplored in Brazil. Therefore, this study determined sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical factors related to the post-treatment quality of life of women with breast cancer., Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 101 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2014 and 2016 and treated at a Brazilian Oncology Reference Service. Data were collected from them using face-to-face surveys. Quality of life was evaluated using the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and EORTC Breast Cancer-specific Quality of Life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-BR23). The data collected were analyzed using Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U test., Results: The median score on the global health, functional, and symptom scales of the EORTC QLQ-C30 was 75.00 (Interquartile range=33.33), 75.99 (Standard deviation [SD]=19.26), and 19.67 (SD=16.91), respectively. The mean score on the functional and symptom scales of the EORTC QLQ-BR23 was 61.89 (SD=17.21) and 20.12 (SD=16.94), respectively. Furthermore, higher post-treatment quality of life was found to be associated with being aged 50 or more, being Black, having eight or more years of education, having a partner, having a paying job, receiving treatment from the private healthcare system, having a higher income, living in the municipality where healthcare services are availed, engaging in physical activity, not smoking, being more religious, having more social support, not being overweight, having no comorbidities, and undergoing lumpectomy., Conclusion: Sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical factors significantly impact the quality of life of women who undergo breast cancer treatment. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are widely used medications for gastrointestinal disorders. Recent research suggests a potential association between long-term PPI use and increased cardiovascular (CV) risk, creating a complex clinical dilemma. This review critically evaluates the current evidence for this association, considering the limitations of observational studies and the lack of definitive confirmation from randomized controlled trials.This review delves into the reported association between PPIs and adverse CV events, examining proposed mechanisms such as drug interactions, electrolyte imbalances induced by PPIs and their potential impact on cardiac and vascular function. Evidence suggests these mechanisms converge, with varying influence depending on patient populations.Clinicians require a risk-benefit analysis for each patient considering their CV risk profile. Alternative gastrointestinal therapies should be explored for high-bleeding risk patients. Medications with lower cytochrome-P450 interaction potential may be preferable among essential PPI users. Elucidating the specific mechanisms by which PPIs might influence CV health, assessing long-term vascular effects and investigating interactions with newer anticoagulant medications are crucial for future research.

Introduction: To report clinical and radiographic outcomes of revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) through the direct anterior approach (DAA) using primary stems., Materials and Methods: The authors assessed a consecutive series of revision THAs operated by DAA using primary (cemented and uncemented) stems between 1/1/2010 and 30/06/2017. The initial cohort comprised 47 patients (50 hips), aged 65 ± 10 years with BMI of 25 ± 4 kg/m 2 . Clinical assessment included modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) and satisfaction with surgery. Radiographic assessment included radiolucent lines > 2 mm, bone remodelling, cortical hypertrophy, pedestal formation, and osteolysis. Linear regression analyses were performed., Results: Of the 50 hips (47 patients) in the initial cohort, intraoperative complications that did not require re-revision occurred in 5 hips. At a follow-up of > 2 years: 5 hips (10%) were lost to follow-up and 3 hips (6%) required stem re-revision, leaving a final cohort of 42 hips (40 patients). Postoperative complications that did not require re-revision occurred in 4 hips (8%). At 4.3 ± 1.6 years, post-revision mHHS was 89 ± 14 (range 47-100) and 38 patients were satisfied or very satisfied with revision surgery. Bone remodelling was observed in 8 hips (16%), cortical hypertrophy in 6 hips (12%), grade I heterotopic ossification in 7 hips (14%), and grade II in 1 hip (2%). There were no cases of radiolucent lines, pedestal formation, or osteolysis. Regression analyses revealed that post-revision mHHS was not associated with any variable., Conclusions: Revision THA performed through the DAA using primary stems grants satisfactory clinical and radiographic outcomes at a minimum follow-up of two years., (© 2023. This paper presents a single-fed, single-layer, dual-band antenna with a large frequency ratio of 4.74:1 for vehicle-to-vehicle communication. The antenna consists of a 28 GHz inset-fed rectangular patch embedded into a 5.9 GHz patch antenna for dual-band operation. The designed dual-band antenna operates from 5.81 to 5.99 GHz (Dedicated Short Range Communications, DSRC) and 27.9 to 30.1 GHz (5G millimeter-wave (mm-wave) band). Furthermore, the upper band patch was modified by inserting slots near the inset feed line to achieve an instantaneous bandwidth of 4.5 GHz. The antenna was fabricated and measured. The manufactured prototype operates simultaneously from 5.8 to 6.05 GHz and from 26.8 to 31.3 GHz. Notably, the designed dual-band antenna offers a high peak gain of 7.7 dBi in the DSRC band and 6.38 dBi in the 5G mm-wave band.

Introduction: One hundred thirty million Chlamydia trachomatis infections are reported worldwide each year. Nineteen serotypes of this pathogen can cause infection in pregnant women and neonates. The distribution of these genotypes in newborns with respiratory infections in Mexico is unknown., Material and Methods: We tested 1062 bronchial lavage samples from neonates with respiratory distress syndrome for Chlamydia infection. The diagnosis of Chlamydia was made by plasmid detection with an in-house PCR assay, and genotypes were identified using a PCR-RFLP assay for the ompA gene., Results: The genotyping of 40 strains identified 14 as I/Ia (35%), 13 as E (32.5%), 7 as D (17.5%), 5 as F (12.5%), and 1 as L2 (2.5%). The relative risk analysis showed that genotype D was associated with neonatal sepsis (RR, 5.83; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.51-25.985; P < .02), while the I/Ia genotype was significantly associated with chorioamnionitis in the mother (2.8; 95% CI, 1.4-5.5; P < .05)., Conclusions: Although C. trachomatis genotypes I/Ia and E of were the strains involved most frequently in respiratory infections in Mexican neonates, 80% of patients with genotype F developed respiratory disease. Background: The incidence of breast cancer is increasing globally; however, survival outcomes vary and are lower in developing countries., Methods: We analyzed the 5- and 10-year survival rates for breast cancer according to the type of healthcare insurance (public vs . private) in a referral center for cancer care in the Brazilian southeast region. This hospital-based cohort study included 517 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between 2003 and 2005. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the probability of survival, and the Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to assess prognostic factors., Results: The 5- and 10-year breast cancer survival rates were as follows: private healthcare service survival rate of 80.6% (95% CI 75.0-85.0) and 71.5% (95% CI 65.4-77.1), respectively, and public healthcare service survival rate of 68.5% (95% CI 62.5-73.8) and 58.5% (95% CI 52.1-64.4), respectively. The main factors associated with the worst prognosis were lymph node involvement in both healthcare services and tumor size >2 cm only in public health services. Introduction: The authors aimed to: (1) determine how length of stay (LOS) and complication rates changed over the past 10 years, in comparison to values estimated by the ACS-NSQIP surgical risk calculator, at a single private institution open to external surgeons; and (2) determine preoperative patient factors associated with complications., Methods: We retrospectively assessed 1018 consecutive patients who underwent primary elective THA over 10 years. We excluded 87 with tumours and 52 with incomplete records. Clinical data of the remaining 879 were used to determine real LOS and rate of 9 adverse events over time, as well as to estimate these values using the risk calculator. Its predictive reliability was represented on receiver operating characteristic curves. Multivariable analyses were performed to determine associations of complications with age, sex, ASA score, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, smoking and BMI., Results: Over the 10-year period, real LOS and real complication rates decreased considerably, while LOS and complication rates estimated by the surgical risk calculator had little or no change. The difference between real and estimated LOS decreased over time. The overall estimated and real rates of any complication were respectively 3.3% and 2.8%. The risk calculator had fair reliability for predicting any complications (AUC 0.72). Overall estimated LOS was shorter than the real LOS in 764 (86.9%) patients. Multivariable analysis revealed risks of any complication to be greater in patients aged ⩾75 (OR = 4.36, p = 0.002), and with hypertension (OR = 3.13, p = 0.016)., Conclusions: Since the implementation of clinical pathways at our institution, real LOS and complication rates decreased considerably, while LOS and complication rates estimated by the surgical risk calculator had little or no change. The difference between real and estimated LOS decreased over time, which could lead some clinicians to reconsider their discharge criteria, knowing that advanced age and hypertension increased risks of encountering complications.

Purpose: This study aims to determine whether changing the stem coating grants superior outcomes at a minimum follow-up of five years., Methods: Retrospective review of a consecutive series of primary total hip arthroplasties (THAs) operated by direct anterior approach between 01/01/2013 and 31/12/2014. Two stems were compared, which were identical except for their surface coating; "the Original stem" was fully coated with hydroxyapatite (HA), while "the ProxCoat stem" was proximally coated with plasma-sprayed titanium and HA. Matching was performed. Clinical assessment included modified Harris hip score (mHHS), Oxford hip score (OHS), and forgotten joint score (FJS). Radiographic assessment evaluated alignment, subsidence, pedestal formation, heterotopic ossification, radiolucent lines ≥ 2 mm, spot welds, cortical hypertrophy, and osteolysis., Results: 232 hips received the Original stem and 167 the ProxCoat stem, from which respectively five hips (2.2%) and no hips (0%) underwent revision. Matching identified two groups of 91 patients, with comparable patient demographics. At > five years follow-up, there were no differences in OHS (16 ± 6 vs 15 ± 5; p = 0.075) nor FJS (81 ± 26 vs 84 ± 22; p = 0.521), but there were differences in mHHS (89 ± 15 vs 92 ± 12; p = 0.042). There were no differences in alignment, subsidence, pedestal formation, heterotopic ossification, cortical hypertrophy, and osteolysis. There were differences in prevalence of proximal radiolucent lines (12% vs 0%; p < 0.001) and distal spot welds (24% vs 54%; p < 0.001)., Conclusion: At a minimum follow-up of five years, this study on matched patients undergoing primary THA found that ProxCoat stems results in significantly fewer radiolucent lines, more spot welds, and less revisions than Original stems, thus suggesting better bone ingrowth., (© 2022. Brazil lacks registries on the prevalence of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) fixation methods., Objective: (i) to describe the demographic profile of patients who underwent THA in the public health system of the municipality of São Paulo during the last 12 years and (ii) to compare fixation methods regarding costs, hospital stay length, and death rates., Methods: This is an ecological study conducted with data available on TabNet, a platform belonging to DATASUS. Public data (from the government health system) on THA procedures performed in São Paulo from 2008 to 2019 were extracted. Gender, age, city region, THA fixation method, number of surgeries, costs, hospital stay length, and death rates were analyzed., Results: We analyzed 7,673 THA, of which 6220 (81%) were performed via cementless/hybrid fixation and 1453 (19%), via the cemented technique. Cementless/hybrid fixation had a higher cost (US$ 495.27) than the cemented one (p < 0.001). Nevertheless, hospital stay length was 0.87 days longer for cemented fixation than the cementless/hybrid one. We found no significant difference in death rates between THA fixation methods., Conclusion: THA cementless/hybrid fixation is prevalent in the municipality of São Paulo, which had higher total costs and shorter hospitalizations than cemented fixation. We found no difference between THA fixation methods and death rates. The aim of this study was to assess temporal trends in disability benefits for breast cancer awarded to women by Brazil's National Social Security Institute. We conducted a time-series analysis of disability benefit incidence rates between 2007 and 2018 using joinpoint regression and data from the Unified Benefits Information System (SUIBE) and open access social security system database. The age-adjusted incidence rate increased by 6.7% per year between 2015 and 2018 after a period of stability between 2007 and 2014. The number of benefits granted to women aged 20-49 increased, on average, by 3.4% per year, showing a marked rise from 2015 to 2018 (10.4% per year). The findings highlight that breast cancer is an important cause of sick leave among female workers and that the incidence of the disease is growing in younger economically active women, reinforcing the importance of early referral to the Social Security Professional Rehabilitation Program to help workers return to work and readapt to working life.

Objective:  The study aimed to characterize the clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical profile of women with invasive breast cancer, according to the risk for Hereditary Predisposition Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome in a Brazilian population., Methods:  This is a retrospective study performed from a hospital-based cohort of 522 women, diagnosed with breast cancer treated at an oncology referral center in the Southeast region of Brazil, between 2014 and 2016., Results:  Among the 430 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer who composed the study population, 127 (29.5%) were classified as at increased risk for hereditary predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. There was a lower level of education in patients at increased risk (34.6%) when compared with those at usual risk (46.0%). Regarding tumor characteristics, women at increased risk had higher percentages of the disease diagnosed at an advanced stage (32.3%), and with tumors > 2cm (63.0%), with increased prevalence for both characteristics, when compared with those at usual risk. Furthermore, we found higher percentages of HG3 (43.3%) and K i -67 ≥ 25% (64.6%) in women at increased risk, with prevalence being about twice as high in this group. Background: Chlamydia trachomatis is considered a public health problem due to the high prevalence in sexually active women and men. The distribution of genital Chlamydia genotypes among Mexican men is unknown., Objective: To assess the prevalence of Chlamydia genotypes in men with infertile women as sexual partners., Methods: A total of 659 urine samples were collected from men whose sexual partners were infertile women; the identifying Chlamydia infection was by means of a real-time nucleic acid amplification test (qPCR). OmpA gene PCR-RFLP and sequencing were used to confirm the genotypes of C. trachomatis. The association of genotypes with age, spermatic parameters and gynecological data of sexual partners was further analyzed., Results: Forty-nine urine samples were positive infection (7.4%). The Chlamydia infection was significantly associated with teratozoospermia, azoospermia, hypospermia, and oligozoospermia. Five genotypes (F 51%; 12.2% to D; 12.2% to E; 6.1% to L2 and 4.1% Ia) were correctly identified. None genotypes identified in this comparative study were positively associated with changes in some of the spermatic values because all of them typically produce some considerable damage to these cells., Conclusions: The F genotype was the most frequent genotype identified in infertile men from Mexico City and all genotypes play an important role in the seminal alteration of Mexican men whose female partners are infertile., (Copyright © 2021 Sociedad Española de Enfermedades Infecciosas y Microbiología Clínica. Objective: To analyze the time to diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer and the associated factors, according to the type of care (public vs. private)., Methodology: Retrospective cohort study with 477 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2014 and 2016. Data were collected in an oncology service in a municipality in Minas Gerais, in the 2018-2019 period. Analyzes were performed using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox's proportional regression model., Results: The median time to diagnosis was 70 days, being shorter for women who discovered the disease through screening tests and who were diagnosed in early stages of the disease. The median time for treatment was 32 days, which was shorter for women assisted by private health service, with a high level of education and who were diagnosed in early stages., Conclusions: Private care and facilitators of access to breast cancer care were associated with shorter waiting times.

In this article, a recent formulation for real-time simulation is developed combining the strain energy density of the Spring Mass Model (SMM) with the equivalent representation of the Strain Energy Density Function (SEDF). The resulting Equivalent Energy Spring Model (EESM) is expected to provide information in real-time about the mechanical response of soft tissue when subjected to uniaxial deformations. The proposed model represents a variation of the SMM and can be used to predict the mechanical behavior of biological tissues not only during loading but also during unloading deformation states. To assess the accuracy achieved by the EESM, experimental data was collected from liver porcine samples via uniaxial loading and unloading tensile tests. Validation of the model through numerical predictions achieved a refresh rate of 31 fps (31.49 ms of computation time for each frame), achieving a coefficient of determination R 2 from 93.23% to 99.94% when compared to experimental data. The proposed hybrid formulation to characterize soft tissue mechanical behavior is fast enough for real-time simulation and captures the soft material nonlinear virgin and stress-softened effects with high accuracy.

Importance: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019) provided systematic estimates of incidence, morbidity, and mortality to inform local and international efforts toward reducing cancer burden., Objective: To estimate cancer burden and trends globally for 204 countries and territories and by Sociodemographic Index (SDI) quintiles from 2010 to 2019., Evidence Review: The GBD 2019 estimation methods were used to describe cancer incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2019 and over the past decade. Estimates are also provided by quintiles of the SDI, a composite measure of educational attainment, income per capita, and total fertility rate for those younger than 25 years. Estimates include 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs)., Findings: In 2019, there were an estimated 23.6 million (95% UI, 22.2-24.9 million) new cancer cases (17.2 million when excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) and 10.0 million (95% UI, 9.36-10.6 million) cancer deaths globally, with an estimated 250 million (235-264 million) DALYs due to cancer. Since 2010, these represented a 26.3% (95% UI, 20.3%-32.3%) increase in new cases, a 20.9% (95% UI, 14.2%-27.6%) increase in deaths, and a 16.0% (95% UI, 9.3%-22.8%) increase in DALYs. Among 22 groups of diseases and injuries in the GBD 2019 study, cancer was second only to cardiovascular diseases for the number of deaths, years of life lost, and DALYs globally in 2019. Cancer burden differed across SDI quintiles. The proportion of years lived with disability that contributed to DALYs increased with SDI, ranging from 1.4% (1.1%-1.8%) in the low SDI quintile to 5.7% (4.2%-7.1%) in the high SDI quintile. While the high SDI quintile had the highest number of new cases in 2019, the middle SDI quintile had the highest number of cancer deaths and DALYs. From 2010 to 2019, the largest percentage increase in the numbers of cases and deaths occurred in the low and low-middle SDI quintiles., Conclusions and Relevance: The results of this systematic analysis suggest that the global burden of cancer is substantial and growing, with burden differing by SDI. These results provide comprehensive and comparable estimates that can potentially inform efforts toward equitable cancer control around the world.
