1. Structural dependence of quantum transport properties on topological nodal-line semimetal bilayer borophene

Abstract

This work presents the electronic and transport properties of bilayer borophene nanoribbons. In the first part, a four-orbital tight-binding model is derived by fitting the \emph{ab initio} band structure. The transport properties of armchair and zigzag bilayer borophene nanoribbons are then analyzed, both with and without periodic boundary conditions. In both scenarios, the nodal line causes conductance to increase with width and exhibit oscillations in narrow nanoribbons. Additionally, plots of current and charge density reveal that edge states have a more pronounced impact in narrower nanoribbons. Finally, uniaxial tensile strain is introduced as a tool to engineer the number of available transport channels.

Abstract

This work presents the results of modelling the ion dynamics in the ART-MS (Autoresonant Trap Mass Spectrometry) device in the quasi-static approximation. This instrument utilizes an anharmonic, purely electrostatic trap for ion confinement and a radio frequency (RF) voltage source with decrementally varying frequency for selective ion extraction. The autoresonant interaction between the oscillatory motion of the ion and the RF voltage causes an increase in the amplitude of certain confined ions, allowing their selective extraction. Numerical modelling shows that the extraction of ions with a given mass occurs not only at the fundamental frequency but also at its harmonics. This effect reduces the selective properties of devices of this type because along with the main mass component for a given frequency, it is possible to enter the detector channel of ions with another mass, for which this frequency corresponds to the second or higher harmonics, even a superposition of some of these harmonics of different ions., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

4. Analysis of internal soliton signals and their eastward propagation in the Alboran Sea: exploring the effect of subinertial forcing and fortnightly variability

Abstract

Internal waves are commonly observed in oceans and lakes where high stratification exists. In the present study in the Strait of Gibraltar, we analyse internal soliton signals recorded in different locations in their eastward propagation from their release point (Camarinal Sill) to the continental slope of the northwestern Alboran Sea. Moreover, the effect of subinertial forcing on the release of solitons is also explored. The internal soliton activity was assessed from different approaches: (i) in-situ data (i.e., current and temperature measurements or High-Frequency Radar), (ii) numerical modelling, and (iii) an analytical approach. The arrival of solitons over the continental slope of the north-western Alboran Sea showed fortnightly variability in both number (occurrence) and amplitude during spring tides when compared with during neap tides. The observed arrival times of the solitons oscillated between 14 (spring tides) and 20 h (neap tides). Nevertheless, to provide a comprehensive explanation for the fluctuations in travel times, it is necessary to consider the subinertial variability driven by atmospheric forcing, which impacts both the flow in the Strait of Gibraltar and the mesoscale patterns in the Alboran Sea (e.g., the Coastal Cyclonic Gyre).

6. Intertidal microphytobenthic primary production and net metabolism of a tropical estuary.

Abstract

Tidal flats are inhabited by benthic microalgae (microphytobenthos, MPB) supporting important ecosystem functions and services. Studies on MPB have been conducted mainly in temperate systems, despite that the majority of tidal flats on Earth are found in the tropical zone (∼55%). To fill this gap of knowledge and evaluate the contribution of tidal flat MPB in one of the most productive estuaries worldwide, sediment cores were collected from 14 stations along the inner Gulf of Nicoya (Costa Rica) at different tidal heights or sea levels (SL) from October 2013 to April 2014. MPB abundance, using chlorophyll a (Chla) biomass as a proxy, and net primary production (P N ) and dark respiration (R D ), using O 2 microsensors, were measured together with other sediment biogeochemical variables in muddy and sandy sediments. Landsat-8 satellite images were used to map the extension of tidal flats and the abundance of MPB using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as a proxy. Chla ranged from 0.45 to 7.45 μg cm -2 , with higher concentrations observed closer to the river mouth. There was no significant correlation between Chla and SL nor with any other sediment physicochemical variable. MPB abundance estimated by remote sensing displayed considerable spatial heterogeneity, both within and among tidal flats, and clear seasonal differences with higher abundance during the rainy season. P N ranged between 0.8 and 8.6 mmol O 2 m -2 h -1 , being positively correlated to SL and to the accumulated rain during 30 days prior to the sampling date and inversely to the mean irradiance at noon during the previous month. Daily net community metabolism estimated from P N and R D data and converted to carbon fixation rates indicates that the unvegetated tidal flats of the gulf contribute as much as the total input of allochthonous C from the Tempisque River. However, the results presented here have to be confirmed with direct measurements of C transfer, including the contribution of the adjacent mangrove system.
