This study investigates the intricate dynamics of siliceous plankton species within the open marine regions of the Greek Seas, focusing on their seasonal and spatial variability. For this purpose, vertical export fluxes of diatoms (DtF), silicoflagellates (SF), and radiolaria (RF) were analyzed in three sediment trap time series obtained from the North Aegean, Cretan, and Ionian Seas. Special attention was given to diatom assemblages, resulting in the estimation of the DtF community structure and diversity for each studied site. Diatom flux values reached 353.9 × 103 valves m−2 day−1, 77.7 × 103 valves m−2 day−1, and 42.4 × 103 valves m−2 day−1 in the North Aegean, Ionian, and Cretan Seas, respectively. SF maxima were 1309.8 × 103 skeletons m−2 day−1 in the North Aegean Sea, 35.2 × 103 skeletons m−2 day−1 in the Ionian Sea, and 11.9 × 103 skeletons m−2 day−1 in the Cretan Sea (South Aegean Sea). RF values reached 13.9 × 103 radiolaria m−2 day−1, 11.9 × 103 radiolaria m−2 day−1, and 5.4 × 103 radiolaria m−2 day−1 in the North Aegean, Ionian, and Cretan Seas, respectively. The North Aegean Sea exhibited significantly higher mean total fluxes, particularly for diatoms, driven by the north-to-south oligotrophy gradient, which was influenced by riverine inflows and the nutrient-rich Black Sea water. In the Cretan and Ionian Seas, convective mixing and atmospheric deposition, especially during increased rainfall (precipitation) events, were identified as primary drivers for the increased siliceous plankton fluxes recorded in the late winter–spring months. Diatom communities were dominated by Naviculales and Fragilariales; the prevalence of the former in the North Aegean Sea is likely linked to the higher nutrient levels in its upper photic zone, as Naviculales includes species with a high affiliation to nutrient enrichment. High-resolution data for planktonic foraminifera and their groups of ecological interest, including Herbivores and Carnivores, combined with benthic foraminifera and a great variety of biogeochemical indices from the SE Aegean sediment core ST5, contribute to a detailed study concerning major and minor climatic episodes during Holocene. The ST5 sediment record, retrieved from the Tilos-Symi marine basin, evidences the impact of the nearby land, the local climate, and the Rhodes Gyre imprint on the eastern Mediterranean water circulation. Pronounced environmental changes are detected during a preconditioning period of ~400 years before the onset of sapropel S1 deposition and during the deposition phases S1a (10.0–8.4 ka BP) and S1b (8.0–6.1 ka BP). Major freshwater influx episodes (10.5 ka BP, 9.2–8.9 ka BP, 7.4 ka BP, 4.5–4.3 ka BP, and few additional during the Late-Holocene) are revealed, prominent oxygen deficiency time intervals (including a distinct brief anoxic period) as well as several drier, cooler and warmer climatic events. Herbivore planktonic foraminifera alternate their dominance with the Carnivores at the preconditioning period before the S1 onset and at the Late-Holocene (2.0–1.5 ka BP) when conditions of good seawater circulation, oxygenation, and productivity alternate with stratified low oxygenation waters and high freshwater influx from the land. Kyanite-rich rock samples from Thassos Island, Greece, underwent beneficiation tests aiming to examine their potential as commercial refractory materials. The extracted material was compared to commercial samples of kyanite, andalusite and sillimanite. The experimental procedure combined mineral processing and material characterization. The mineral processing included grinding of the Thassos samples and grain size distribution, then gravity separation, using heavy liquid media (sodium polytungstate), and magnetic separation. Material characterization included XRF analysis on the bulk samples, XRD analysis on both the bulk and the commercial samples, and combined reflected light microscopy, SEM, XRF and XRD analysis on the final product. Gravity separation tests showed that the optimum liberation size of kyanite is any grain size finer than 500 μm, since coarser grain size fractions are characterized by elevated content of accessory minerals in the concentrates. Magnetic separation followed, removing the magnetic minerals from the concentrates, with ilmenite being a possible Ti-rich by-product to be recovered. The results indicate that the obtained percentage of kyanite reaches up to 95%. Furthermore, chemical analysis reveals that the composition of the processed material, in terms of concentration of alumina (and other major oxides), meets the standards of the Chinese and the American industry. It is therefore suggested that the Thassos kyanite-bearing assemblages constitute a promising resource that should be further tested in a semi-industrial scale, to fully establish their industrial potential.
