Abstract

La sismique fréquentielle est une méthode peu utilisée bien que très puissante pour vérifier la continuité des contraintes dans un massif. Mise au point pour des contrôles d’injection, elle est utile par exemple pour déterminer que le toit d'une exploitation minière est resté stable, même 50 ans après son abandon (cas de Chizeuil). Cela peut l'être aussi pour détecter des karsts inattendus sous des fondations (cas de Tournai). Le principe en est simple : il s'agit d'émettre un choc mécanique dans un terrain et d'analyser en fréquence le signal reçu par un récepteur en plusieurs points du massif. Le champ de contrainte produit par le choc voit son spectre modifié par le terrain : en milieu continu, le modèle de Kelvin-Voigt montre que les fréquences transmises sont plus élevées si le module élastique est élevé ; il en est de même si la viscosité est élevée. En milieu fracturé, les fractures jouent le rôle d'un filtre passe bas : à toute largeur de fissure correspond une longueur d’onde minimale au-delà de laquelle il n'y a pas transmission de la vibration de part et d’autre de la fracture. En conséquence, les hautes fréquences ne passent que s'il n'y a pas de fissures, si le module élastique est élevé et si la viscosité importante, ce qui est un objectif commun à tout constructeur. A Chizeuil, sept forages de 50 mètres réalisés au-dessus de l’exploitation ont permis de montrer que les hautes fréquences étaient transmises au-dessus de la mine sur 20 mètres ou plus avec une remarquable continuité ; aucune basse fréquence n'apparaît, le toit de la mine n'est donc pas fissuré. L'exemple de Tournai est l'inverse du précédent : une trentaine de forages de 18 mètres de profondeur ont permis de dessiner une carte sommaire des karsts en dessous de fondations en cours de réalisation et de délimiter précisément un certain nombre de secteurs, ce qui a permis de poursuivre la construction avec un maximum d'informations.

Abstract

International audience; Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a highly prevalent and harmful medical disorder often comorbid with psychosis where it can contribute to cardiovascular complications. As immune dysfunction is a key shared component of both MetS and schizophrenia (SZ), this study investigated the relationship between immune alterations and MetS in patients with SZ, whilst controlling the impact of confounding clinical characteristics including psychiatric symptoms and comorbidities, history of childhood maltreatment and psychotropic treatments.Method: A total of 310 patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for SZ or schizoaffective disorders (SZA), with or without MetS, were systematically assessed and included in the FondaMental Advanced Centers of Expertise for Schizophrenia (FACE-SZ) cohort. Detailed clinical characteristics of patients, including psychotic symptomatology, psychiatric comorbidities and history of childhood maltreatment were recorded and the serum levels of 18 cytokines were measured. A penalized regression method was performed to analyze associations between inflammation and MetS, whilst controlling for confounding factors.ResultsOf the total sample, 25% of patients had MetS. Eight cytokines were above the lower limit of detection (LLOD) in more than 90% of the samples and retained in downstream analysis. Using a conservative Variable Inclusion Probability (VIP) of 75%, we found that elevated levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-7, IL-12/23 p40 and IL-16 and lower levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were associated with MetS. As for clinical variables, age, sex, body mass index (BMI), diagnosis of SZ (not SZA), age at the first episode of psychosis (FEP), alcohol abuse, current tobacco smoking, and treatment with antidepressants and anxiolytics were all associated with MetS.Conclusion: We have identified five cytokines associated with MetS in SZ suggesting that patients with psychotic disorders and MetS are characterized by a specific “immuno-metabolic” profile. This may help to design tailored treatments for this subgroup of patients with both psychotic disorders and MetS, taking one more step towards precision medicine in psychiatry

Abstract

Chromatin is densely packed with nucleosomes, which limits the accessibility of many chromatin-associated proteins. Pioneer factors (PFs) are usually viewed as a special group of sequence-specific transcription factors (TFs) that can recognize nucleosome-embedded motifs, invade compact chromatin, and generate open chromatin regions. Through this process, PFs initiate a cascade of events that play key roles in gene regulation and cell differentiation. A current debate in the field is if PFs belong to a unique subset of TFs with intrinsic "pioneering activity", or if all TFs have the potential to function as PFs within certain cellular contexts. There are also different views regarding the key feature(s) that define pioneering activity. In this review, we present evidence from the literature related to these alternative views and discuss how to potentially reconcile them. It is possible that both intrinsic properties, like tight nucleosome binding and structural compatibility, and cellular conditions, like concentration and co-factor availability, are important for PF function.

4. Revisiting stress-corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement in 7xxx-Al alloys at the near-atomic-scale.

Abstract

The high-strength 7xxx series aluminium alloys can fulfil the need for light, high strength materials necessary to reduce carbon-emissions, and are extensively used in aerospace for weight reduction purposes. However, as all major high-strength materials, these alloys can be sensitive to stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) through anodic dissolution and hydrogen embrittlement (HE). Here, we study at the near-atomic-scale the intra- and inter-granular microstructure ahead and in the wake of a propagating SCC crack. Moving away from model alloys and non-industry standard tests, we perform a double cantilever beam (DCB) crack growth test on an engineering 7xxx Al-alloy. H is found segregated to planar arrays of dislocations and to grain boundaries that we can associate to the combined effects of hydrogen-enhanced localised plasticity (HELP) and hydrogen-enhanced decohesion (HEDE) mechanisms. We report on a Mg-rich amorphous hydroxide on the corroded crack surface and evidence of Mg-related diffusional processes leading to dissolution of the strengthening η-phase precipitates ahead of the crack., (© 2022.
