Small molecules can display certain electronic and structural features that enable their use for metal-sensing applications in different fields. Of the reported metal sensors, there has been increasing interest in copper sensing in the past decade, given the biological importance of copper as well as its presence as a potential contaminant in water and fuels. Molecules used for copper(II) sensing generally consist of a fluorophore/chromophore and a ligand for selective metal ion recognition. This review article focuses on literature contributions since the year 2010 concerning small molecule copper(II) sensors that provide a naked-eye color response in solution. We present molecular structural features and sensing mechanisms for the colorimetric and fluorometric detection of copper(II) ions in different environmental, agricultural, and biological samples. In addition, the sensing performance of these chemosensors is compared and discussed, which could aid in the future design of chemosensors for copper(II). Finally, we outline the challenges and future prospects of fluorophore/chromophore–ligand chemistry in applications of small molecules for fluorometric and colorimetric assays of copper(II).

Nanoparticles have emerged as versatile tools in the realm of thermal therapy, offering precise control and feedback mechanisms for targeted treatments. This review explores the intersection of nanotechnology and thermal therapy, focusing on the utilization of nanoparticles for image-guided interventions and temperature monitoring. Starting with an exploration of local temperature dynamics compared to whole-body responses, we delve into the landscape of nanomaterials and their pivotal role in nanomedicine. Various physical stimuli employed in therapy and imaging are scrutinized, laying the foundation for nanothermal therapies and the accompanying challenges. A comprehensive analysis of nanomaterial architecture ensues, delineating the functionalities of magnetic, plasmonic, and luminescent nanomaterials within the context of thermal therapies. Nano-design intricacies, including core–shell structures and monodisperse properties, are dissected for their impact on therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, considerations in designing in vivo nanomaterials, such as hydrodynamic radii and core sizes at sub-tissue levels, are elucidated. The review then delves into specific modalities of thermally induced therapy, including magnetically induced hyperthermia and luminescent-based thermal treatments. Magnetic hyperthermia treatment is explored alongside its imaging and relaxometric properties, emphasizing the implications of imaging formulations on biotransformation and biodistribution. This review also provides an overview of the magnetic hyperthermia treatment using magnetic nanoparticles to induce localized heat in tissues. Similarly, optical and thermal imaging techniques utilizing luminescent nanomaterials are discussed, highlighting their potential for light-induced thermal therapy and cellular-level temperature monitoring. Finally, the application landscape of diagnosis and photothermal therapy (PTT) is surveyed, encompassing diverse areas such as cancer treatment, drug delivery, antibacterial therapy, and immunotherapy. The utility of nanothermometers in elucidating thermal relaxation dynamics as a diagnostic tool is underscored, alongside discussions on PTT hyperthermia protocols. Moreover, the advancements in nanoparticle magnetic imaging and implications of imaging formulations especially in creating positive MRI contrast agents are also presented. This comprehensive review offers insights into the evolving landscape of nanoparticle-based image-guided thermal therapies, promising advancements in precision medicine and targeted interventions, underscoring the importance of continued research in optimization for the full potential of magnetic hyperthermia to improve its efficacy and clinical translation. This review focuses on the green synthesis methods, challenges, and applications of manganese oxide (Mn3O4) nanoparticles investigated in the past five years. Mn3O4 nanoparticles offer some unique properties that are attributed in part to the presence of mixed oxidation states of manganese (i.e. +2 and +3) in the particle, which can be utilized in a wide range of redox-sensitive applications, such as in developing supercapacitive energy storage materials. In addition, the green synthesis of Mn3O4 nanoparticles through plant extracts has potential uses in sustainable nanotechnology. Various plant extract-mediated synthesis techniques for Mn3O4 nanoparticles have been investigated and presented. By comparing the size and structure of the synthesized Mn3O4 nanoparticles, we have observed a consistent pattern of obtaining spherical particles with a size ranging from 16 to 50 nm. The morphology of the generated Mn3O4 nanoparticles can be influenced by the annealing temperature and the composition of the plant extract used during the nanoparticle synthesis. Additionally, numerous applications for the greenly produced Mn3O4 nanoparticles have been demonstrated. Mn3O4 nanoparticles derived from plant extracts have been found to possess antimicrobial properties, supercapacitive and electrochemical capabilities, and excellent pollutant degradation efficiency. However, the magnetic properties of these nanoparticles synthesized by plant extracts are yet to be explored for potential biomedical applications. Objective: Rare disease Background: Histoplasma capsulatum is prevalent in the mid-eastern United States and is an environmental fungus that causes human infection by the inhalation of its spores. It is commonly associated with areas containing large amounts of bird excrement and can survive for years in the soil. Only 1% of infected individuals develop disseminated histoplasmosis or Histoplasma endocarditis. Case Report: A 61-year-old man with atrial fibrillation had 8 months of fatigue, low-grade fevers, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss presented to the Emergency Department. He worked and lived in Central Florida and although he raised cattle, he denied exposure to birds or bats with regularity. A transesophageal echocardiogram confirmed a sessile echo density on the atrial surface of the mitral valve. His microbial Karius cell-free DNA test from his blood sample was positive for Histoplasma capsulatum, and he was immediately given intravenous liposomal amphotericin for 2 weeks. A tissue valve was used to successfully replace his mitral valve along with a coronary artery bypass and a maze procedure for his persistent atrial fibrillation and atrial futter. The diagnosis of mitral valve endocarditis from disseminated histoplasmosis was confirmed by pathological analysis, and he was sent home on long-term itraconazole maintenance treatment. Conclusions: Surgical intervention in combination with anti-fungal medication can be a lifesaving intervention for disseminated histoplasmosis. A thorough history is particularly important when evaluating a patient with an unknown infectious source, especially assessing for risk factors, including exposure to environmental factors, workplace, and animals. The formation and properties of silver and iron nanoscale components in the Ag-Fe bimetallic system deposited on mordenite depend on several parameters during their preparation. Previously, it was shown that an important condition for optimizing nano-center properties in a bimetallic catalyst is to change the order of sequential deposition of components; the order "first Ag+, then Fe2+" was chosen as optimal. In this work, the influence of exact Ag/Fe atomic proportion on the system's physicochemical properties was studied. This ratio has been confirmed to affect the stoichiometry of the reduction–oxidation processes involving Ag+ and Fe2+, as shown by XRD, DR UV-Vis, XPS, and XAFS data, while HRTEM, SBET and TPD-NH3 show little change. However, it was found the correlation between the occurrence and amount of the Fe3+ ions incorporated into the zeolite's framework and the experimentally determined catalytic activities towards the model de-NOx reaction along the series of nanomaterials elucidated in this present paper. The objective was to propose changes in subjects to improve the general knowledge of engineering and maintenance management in the Mechanical Engineering career of the Technical University of Manabi. Two surveys were designed to know how the graduates reflected their knowledge in the area of maintenance engineering and management knowledge as well as the requirements they were expected to have for the industrial sector of the province of Manabí, fundamentally as well as validating these tools through the Kuder-Richard method. Relationship matrices were implemented to know if the current subjects of the mechanical engineer's study plan complied with the requirements requested by the industrial sector. The main results obtained showed that they did not meet the requirements, so two new subjects and their objectives were proposed to solve the deficiencies detected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs) are devices that have been proven to function as sensors for detecting specific chemical species; this usually requires that the QCM is modified with a material that is capable to interact with the desired compound. Zeolites are an example of materials used as sensitive layer. This due to their capacity for selective adsorption and large surface area; moreover, they can grow directly on the QCM surface. After, the interaction between sensitive layer and analyte, there is a mass change on the QCM surface, which induces a frequency shift in the frequency generated by the QCM. However, the application of QCMs requires that some factors are considered, such as QCM functioning, wiring and surface functionalization. Even when there are commercial devices for QCM operation, a literature revision shows that some concepts are not understood, or some misconceptions are observed. Purified water is an essential raw material in production processes in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry. The increase in its availability and quality can be improved with new design elements as an element within operational reliability. The objective of this work was to carry out an adaptation in the process of obtaining purified water, transforming the design of the 5 µm filter of the first stage of the process, conceived in its original design as disposable by one of stainless steel, and the addition of an action backwash, to reduce operating costs for replacement. Among the methods used is the operational reliability model that includes the process reliability design, the use of the Harrington methodology appropriate to the Nigel Cross method for the evaluation of the changes made, which resulted in the feasibility of the replacement of the SupaGard filter from the manufacturer Sartorius with the SupaMesh filter from the manufacturer Amazon Filter, improving the production of purified water by 3300 liters per week. Introduction  Pulmonary embolism (PE) is associated with approximately 10.5% of maternal deaths in the United States. Despite heightened awareness of its mortality potential, there islittle data available to guide its management in pregnancy. We present the case of a massive PE during gestation successfully treated with catheter-directed embolectomy. Case Presentation  A 37-year-old G2P1001 presented with a syncopal episode preceded by dyspnea and chest pain. Upon presentation, she was hypotensive, tachycardiac, and hypoxic. Imaging showed an occlusive bilateral PE, right heart strain, and a possible intrauterine pregnancy. Beta-human chorionic gonadotropin was positive. She was taken emergently for catheter-directed embolectomy. Her condition immediately improved afterward. Postprocedure pelvic ultrasound confirmed a viable intrauterine pregnancy at 10 weeks gestation. She was discharged with therapeutic enoxaparin and gave birth to a healthy infant at 38 weeks gestation. Conclusion  Despite being the gold standard for PE treatment in nonpregnant adults, systemic thrombolysis is relatively contraindicated in pregnancy due to concern for maternal or fetal hemorrhage. Surgical or catheter-based thrombectomies are rarely recommended. Limited alternative options force their consideration, particularly in a hemodynamically unstable patient. Catheter-directed embolectomy can possibly bypass such complications.
