The study assessed the sensitivity of 20 provenances of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) growing at provenance experimental trials located in lowland (Siemianice) and upland (Bliżyn) climate in Central Poland to air temperature and precipitation, including drought. The measure of the tree' sensitivity was their radial growth reactions, i.e. changes in the radial growth in years 1971-2015. We found that rainwater supplies in a soil stored in autumn of the previous year, length of the growing season and thermal conditions in its beginning, as well as thermal and moisture conditions of the year of tree ring formation had a significant impact on the wood volume formed by the larches, regardless of their origin and climatic region in which they grew. The degree of homogeneity of tree' radial growth reactions to precipitation deficit and high temperature was the lowest in a warmer and drier climate in the lowlands in Central Poland. Larch provenances with the lowest and the highest values of drought resilience components (resistance, recovery, resilience, relative resilience of radial growth) originated in different regions of Poland. Greater resistance to drought was observed in larch provenances growing at the trial located in the uplands. The relative resilience index seems to be the most helpful in predicting the future radial growth reactions of the studied provenances, and consequently their viability and survival, as this index showed the highest variability among trees of a given provenance and was most often significantly different between pairs of provenances., Competing Interests: Declarations. Cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD) is a major constraint for production of cotton (Gossypium sp.) in Northwest India. CLCuD is caused by a monopartite, circular ssDNA virus belonging to the genus Begomovirus in association with betasatellites and alphasatellites, and ttransmitted by a whitefly vector (Bemisia tabaci). To explore the genetic variability in betasatellites and alphasatellite associated with the CLCuD-begomovirus complex in Northwest India. A survey was conducted for successive three years of 2014 to 2016 and twig samples from symptomatic and healthy cotton plants randomly were collected. Total plant DNAs were isolated, subjected to rolling circle amplification (RCA), cloning and sequencing. Full-length genome of 12 betasatellites and 13 alphasatellites, those were obtained in the present study, were analyzed. Sequence analysis showed that all the present betasatellites shared 85-99 percent nucleotide identity (PNI) among themselves and 84-95 PNI with other members of Cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite (CLCuMB) and fell into one genogroup along with CLCuMB. But in close observation the present betasatellites clustered into two phylogenetic subgroups under single CLCuMB. The present alphasatellites showed 72-100 PNI among themselves and fell under three alphasatellite species, Gossypium Darwinii symptomless alphasatellite (GDarSLA), Cotton leaf curl Multan alphasatellite (CLCuMA) and Cotton leaf curl Burewala alphasatellite (CLCuBuA). In the recombination analysis, all the present betasatellites and alphasatellites were found to be recombinants involving intra species recombination in betasatellite, and interspecies recombination in alphasatellite species. An in-depth understanding of carbon dynamics and ecosystem productivity is essential for conservation and management of different ecosystems. Ecosystem dynamics and carbon budget are assessed by estimating net ecosystem production (NEP) across different global ecosystems. An ecological productivity assessment of forest and floating meadow ecosystems in Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP), Manipur, North East India, was conducted using the multi-criteria decision-making process namely, gray relational analysis (GRA). The analysis was performed on 24 selected criterions classified either as "higher-the-better" or "lower-the-better" based on their degree of influence on the carbon budget. Floating meadows exhibited a higher production of aboveground and belowground biomass and a higher total mortality and decay. Furthermore, the study found that floating meadows exhibited a higher soil organic carbon (SOC) and net soil organic matter (SOM) than the forest ecosystem. The forest ecosystem showed higher total respiration (R T ), heterotrophic respiration (R H ), and autotrophic respiration (R A ) than floating meadows. Floating meadows exhibited a higher net primary productivity (NPP) of 616.49 ± 33.87 gCm -2  year -1 than the forest ecosystem, which has a NPP of 566.64 ± 65.26 gCm -2  year -1 . Similarly, floating meadows have higher NEP (495.25 ± 36.46 gCm -2  year -1 ) than forest ecosystems (418.39 ± 65.76 gCm -2  year -1 ). These characteristics have a significant influence on the carbon budget in floating meadows as compared to forest ecosystems, as shown by larger values of gray relational coefficient (GRC) in GRA. The floating meadows ecosystem (0.82) obtained 54.72% gain in gray relational grades (GRG) value with the forest ecosystem (0.53). Background and Aims: In Central Europe, the drought-tolerant downy oak (Quercus pubescens) is at the northern edge of its natural distribution range, often growing in small and spatially isolated populations. Here, we elucidate how the population genetic structure of Central European Q. pubescens was shaped by geographic barriers, genetic drift and introgression with the closely related sessile oak (Q. petraea)., Methods: 27 Q. pubescens populations from the northern margin of Q. pubescens' natural distribution range were sampled. Based on 16 nuclear microsatellite markers (nSSRs), Bayesian clustering and distance-based analyses were performed to determine the intraspecific genetic structure and to identify genetic barriers. To identify drivers of introgression with Q. petraea, generalised linear models were applied to link levels of introgression with environmental conditions. To track post-glacial migration routes, the spatial distribution of haplotypes based on 8 chloroplast microsatellite markers (cpSSRs) was investigated., Key Results: Based on nSSRs, the study populations of Q. pubescens were divided into a western and an eastern genetic cluster. Within these clusters, more pronounced genetic substructure was observed in the west, probably due to a rugged topography and limited gene flow. Introgression from Q. petraea was more prevalent at wetter and north-exposed sites and in the west. The identified cpSSR haplotypes followed known migration pathways., Conclusions: Our results suggest two late-glacial refugia in or near the southwestern Alps and the southeastern Alps as potential sources for post-glacial migration. Although some genetic exchange is evident in Northern Italy, south of the Alps, the two clusters remain distinct at a large scale. Background: Conifers, mainly of the genus Pinus, have invaded natural and productive landscapes worldwide. Controlling dense conifer invasions is challenging and requires both effective initial control methods and long-term site management to prevent re-invasion. Broadcast aerial herbicide application is often the preferred treatment method for dense infestations of pines with high rates of complex herbicide mixtures used. The objective of this study was to: (i) test the efficacy of four simple herbicide mixes (containing two active ingredients and one adjuvant) as compared to an operational standard (four active ingredients and three adjuvants) for control of Pinus contorta invasions in a field trial and (ii) to quantify the effect of treatment mixes on non-target vegetation to determine impacts to plant community composition., Results: We found that a simplified herbicide mix containing two active ingredients and one adjuvant was equally as effective as the current operational standard, with efficacy for all treatments increasing as a function of stem density. All herbicide treatments significantly impacted the post-spray community composition with differences among treatments in post-spray vegetation composition also detected. Following all treatments plant communities transitioned from a mixed native/exotic grassland-herb community to a simplified community dominated by exotic grasses., Conclusions: Our results indicate a simpler herbicide mix could be used for broadcast aerial control of dense pine invasion reducing total herbicide input and cost of the operation. Balancing increasing demand for wood products while also maintaining forest biodiversity is a paramount challenge. Europe's Biodiversity and Forest Strategies for 2030 attempt to address this challenge. Together, they call for strict protection of 10% of land area, including all primary and old growth forests, increasing use of ecological forestry, and less reliance on monocultural plantations. Using data on country wide silvicultural practices and a new database on strict forest reserves across Europe, we assess how triad forest zoning could help meet these goals. Our analysis reveals that zoning in Europe is overwhelmingly focused on wood production, while there has been little concomitant protection of forests in strict reserves. Moreover, most strict forest reserves are < 50 ha in size, likely too small to capture the minimum dynamic area necessary to sustain many taxa. Manure biogas residue has attracted increasing attention in waste recycling but faces substantial challenges because of its low carbon content, high ash content, and high heavy metal content. A novel sequential carbonization approach was proposed for recycling biogas residue; this approach consisted of pre-pyrolysis, activation with Ca(OH) 2 , and then activation with KOH. Pig manure-derived biogas residue was upcycled into engineered biochar (EB) with a high yield (26 %) and showed excellent performance in removing a typical plasticizer, diethyl phthalate (DEP). The proportion of carbon content greatly increased from 18 % (biogas residue) to 67 % (EB); however, the ash content decreased from 50 % (biogas residue) to 24 % (EB). The concentration of heavy metals decreased, and Zn had the largest decrease from 713 mg kg -1 to 61 mg kg -1 (p < 0.001). The sorption of DEP onto EB was rapid and reached equilibrium within 20 h. The developed specific surface area of EB was 1247 m 2 /g and provided abundant sorption sites for DEP; additionally, the sorption quantity reached 309 mg/g. The sorption capacity was dominated by surface adsorption. The oxygen-containing functional groups, graphene structure, porous structure, and hydrophobicity of EB contributed to the pore filling, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and partitioning processes. Furthermore, the EB showed excellent practical application potential and great cycling stability. Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) is economically one of the most important conifer species in Europe. Spruce forests are threatened by outbreaks of the bark beetle Ips typographus L., and this will worsen with a projected warmer and drier climate and increased outbreak dynamic following storms. Volatile terpenes and aromatics play pivotal roles in defence of trees, however, little is known about the emission dynamics of these compounds from trees colonized with I. typographus, particularly in dependence on the beetle's developmental stages and colonisation densities. Here, we analysed the emission profiles of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from spruce logs colonised with low (LDT) and high (HDT) densities of I. typographus from the initial colonisation until the emergence of the next beetle generation. A first VOCs emission peak appeared directly after colonisation and lasted for one week. It mainly consisted of monoterpenoids and most likely reflected the trees' constitutive defence against herbivory. Under HDT, a second emission maximum occurred during the larval stage, whereas under LDT a second peak appeared later during maturation feeding of callow beetles. In contrast to the first peak, sesquiterpenoids, aromatics and oxygenated monoterpenoids dominated the second peak, possibly reflecting the trees' induced defence. Developing beetles seem to face a variety of defence compounds even if the tree has been overwhelmed and colonisation by parental beetles was already successful. The specific release patterns under LDT and HDT might be due to different availability of precursor compounds, depletion of constitutively stored compounds and differences in microbial activities associated with the bark beetles. The present study highlights constitutive defence of spruce trees upon herbivore attack, and the effect of infestation density on the temporal dynamics of induced defence. Biochar and hydrochar have garnered widespread attention owing to their excellent performance in environmental remediation, carbon sequestration, and resource utilization from biowaste. Studies on the release potential of dissolved organic matter (DOM) have been limited, and the distinction between biochar and hydrochar remains unclear. In this study, pine sawdust was utilized as a model precursor with the aim of comparing the release quantity, components, and properties of DOM from biochar (BDOM) and hydrochar (HDOM) under various simulated conditions. The amount of DOM released by hydrochar (38.20-190.49 g/kg) was significantly greater than that released by biochar (0.57-11.96 g/kg), and more DOM was released at higher temperatures and pH values. BDOM consists of three categories of components, namely, humic-like, protein-like, and benzoic acid-like and tyrosine-like substances compounds, whereas HDOM consists of four categories of components, namely, two categories of humic-like compounds and two categories of protein-like compounds. By using ESI-FT-ICR-MS technology, 8586 compounds in BDOM and 6428 compounds in HDOM were identified. A total of 4665 unique compounds were found in BDOM, 1416 unique compounds were found in HDOM under alkaline release conditions, and HDOM contained more unique compounds than those found in other environments. CRAM/lignin-like compounds made up the majority of the released DOM and reached 31.01-65.35 % for BDOM and 54.79-73.05 % for HDOM. In many species, polymorphic genomic inversions underlie complex phenotypic polymorphisms and facilitate local adaptation in the face of gene flow. Multiple polymorphic inversions can co-occur in a genome, but the prevalence, evolutionary significance, and limits to complexity of genomic inversion landscapes remain poorly understood. Here, we examine genome-wide genetic variation in one of Europe's most destructive forest pests, the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus, scan for polymorphic inversions, and test whether inversions are associated with key traits in this species. We analyzed 240 individuals from 18 populations across the species' European range and, using a whole-genome resequencing approach, identified 27 polymorphic inversions covering ∼28% of the genome. The inversions vary in size and in levels of intra-inversion recombination, are highly polymorphic across the species range, and often overlap, forming a complex genomic architecture. We found no support for mechanisms such as directional selection, overdominance, and associative overdominance that are often invoked to explain the presence of large inversion polymorphisms in the genome. This suggests that inversions are either neutral or maintained by the combined action of multiple evolutionary forces. We also found that inversions are enriched in odorant receptor genes encoding elements of recognition pathways for host plants, mates, and symbiotic fungi. Our results indicate that the genome of this major forest pest of growing social, political, and economic importance harbors one of the most complex inversion landscapes described to date and raise questions about the limits of intraspecific genomic architecture complexity., (© The Author(s) 2024. Herein, a mesoporous magnetic chitosan-salicylaldehyde/calcium oxide nanoparticle (CS-SL/CaO/Fe 3 O 4 ) biocomposite adsorbent that was prepared via freeze-drying. The CS-SL/CaO/Fe 3 O 4 was utilized for the adsorption of ramazol brilliant blue (RBB) dye from aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties of the CS-SL/CaO/Fe 3 O 4 were evaluated using diverse characterization techniques, including BET, XRD, FTIR, FESEM-EDX, CHNS, and pH pzc . The three main factors for adsorption included the following A: CS-SL/CaO/Fe 3 O 4 dosage (0.02-0.1 g/100 mL), B: pH (4-10), and C: Time (60-540 min). These factors were improved using statistical methods, specifically the Box-Behnken design (BBD). The optimal conditions for achieving maximum RBB removal (62.5 %) are listed: CS-SL/CaO/Fe 3 O 4 dosage of 0.1 g/100 mL, a solution pH of 7, and a contact time of 540 min. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium isotherms were well described by the pseudo first order (PFO) kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. Thus, the CS-SL/CaO/Fe 3 O 4 material has a maximum adsorption capacity (q max ) of 63.3 mg/g for RBB at 25 °C. The adsorption mechanism of RBB onto the CS-SL/CaO/Fe 3 O 4 surface was attributed to electrostatic forces, n-π stacking, H-bonding, and Pi-Pi interactions. Extensive forest restoration is a key strategy to meet nature-based sustainable development goals and provide multiple social and environmental benefits 1 . Yet achieving forest restoration at scale requires cost-effective methods 2 . Tree planting in degraded landscapes is a popular but costly forest restoration method that often results in less biodiverse forests when compared to natural regeneration techniques under similar conditions 3 . Here we assess the current spatial distribution of pantropical natural forest (from 2000 to 2016) and use this to present a model of the potential for natural regeneration across tropical forested countries and biomes at a spatial resolution of 30 m. We estimate that an area of 215 million hectares-an area greater than the entire country of Mexico-has potential for natural forest regeneration, representing an above-ground carbon sequestration potential of 23.4 Gt C (range, 21.1-25.7 Gt) over 30 years. Five countries (Brazil, Indonesia, China, Mexico and Colombia) account for 52% of this estimated potential, showcasing the need for targeting restoration initiatives that leverage natural regeneration potential. The density of wood is a key indicator of the carbon investment strategies of trees, impacting productivity and carbon storage. Despite its importance, the global variation in wood density and its environmental controls remain poorly understood, preventing accurate predictions of global forest carbon stocks. Here we analyse information from 1.1 million forest inventory plots alongside wood density data from 10,703 tree species to create a spatially explicit understanding of the global wood density distribution and its drivers. Our findings reveal a pronounced latitudinal gradient, with wood in tropical forests being up to 30% denser than that in boreal forests. In both angiosperms and gymnosperms, hydrothermal conditions represented by annual mean temperature and soil moisture emerged as the primary factors influencing the variation in wood density globally. This indicates similar environmental filters and evolutionary adaptations among distinct plant groups, underscoring the essential role of abiotic factors in determining wood density in forest ecosystems. Additionally, our study highlights the prominent role of disturbance, such as human modification and fire risk, in influencing wood density at more local scales. Factoring in the spatial variation of wood density notably changes the estimates of forest carbon stocks, leading to differences of up to 21% within biomes. Context: The emergence of pan-resistant bacteria requires the development of new antibiotics and antibiotic potentiators., Objective: This review identifies antibacterial phenolic compounds that have been identified in Asian and Pacific Angiosperms from 1945 to 2023 and analyzes their strengths and spectra of activity, distributions, molecular masses, solubilities, modes of action, structures-activities, as well as their synergistic effects with antibiotics, toxicities, and clinical potential., Methods: All data in this review was compiled from Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, and library search; other sources were excluded. We used the following combination of keywords: 'Phenolic compound', 'Plants', and 'Antibacterial'. This produced 736 results. Each result was examined and articles that did not contain information relevant to the topic or coming from non-peer-reviewed journals were excluded. Each of the remaining 467 selected articles was read critically for the information that it contained., Results: Out of ∼350 antibacterial phenolic compounds identified, 44 were very strongly active, mainly targeting the cytoplasmic membrane of Gram-positive bacteria, and with a molecular mass between 200 and 400 g/mol. 2-Methoxy-7-methyljuglone, [6]-gingerol, anacardic acid, baicalin, vitexin, and malabaricone A and B have the potential to be developed as antibacterial leads., Conclusions: Angiosperms from Asia and the Pacific provide a rich source of natural products with the potential to be developed as leads for treating bacterial infections.

Mangroves are key components of productive ecosystems that provide a multitude of ecosystem goods and services. How these species will respond to future climates with more frequent and severe extreme temperatures has not received much attention. To understand how vulnerable mangroves are to future warming, we quantified photosynthetic heat tolerance and estimated thermal safety margins for thirteen mangrove species from the southwestern Indian coast. We quantified heat tolerance as temperatures that resulted in a 5 % (T 5 ) and 50 % (T 50 ) decline in photosystem II function, and thermal safety margins (TSM) as the difference between T 50 and maximum leaf temperatures. T 50 ranged from 48.9 °C in Avicennia Marina to 55.3 °C in Bruguiera gymnorhiza, with a mean of 53.3 °C for the thirteen species. Heat tolerance was higher for species with bigger leaves which experience higher leaf temperatures, but was not related to the other leaf traits examined. Heat tolerance was exceptionally high in these mangroves compared to other woody species. Cerambycid species of the Spondylidinae subfamily are distributed worldwide and are known for being prolific invaders that infest conifers. In New Zealand, Arhopalus ferus (Mulsant), the burnt pine longhorn beetle, is well-established and requires monitoring at high-risk sites such as ports, airports, and sawmills as part of the requirements to meet pine log export standards set by the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI). Currently, its surveillance relies on traps baited with host volatiles (i.e., ethanol and α-pinene). We used volatile collections from adult beetles, electroantennograms, and field trapping bioassays to identify the pheromones emitted by the burnt pine longhorn beetle A. ferus and their effects on its behaviour. We show that A. ferus males emit mainly (E)-fuscumol and geranylacetone, as well as the minor components, α-terpinene and p-mentha-1,3,8-triene, and that all four compounds elicit a dose-dependent response in antennae of both sexes. Traps baited with the binary combination of geranylacetone plus fuscumol captured significantly more female A. ferus than did unbaited traps in two of three field experiments. α-Terpinene did not affect A. ferus trap catches and effects of p-mentha-1,3,8-triene on trap catch were not determined. Our findings provide further evidence of the use of fuscumol and geranylacetone as aggregation-sex pheromones by longhorn beetles in the Spondylidinae subfamily, and suggest that their deployment in survey traps may improve the efficacy of A. ferus monitoring in New Zealand and elsewhere., Competing Interests: Declarations. The Mediterranean region, with its unique ecological characteristics, is particularly sensitive to global environmental changes, including climate change and impact of air pollution. Although Aleppo pine and black pine forests are the most abundant on the eastern Adriatic coast, atmospheric deposition in these forests is poorly studied. Changes in the chemical composition of precipitation as it passes through the tree canopy can lead to soil and groundwater eutrophication, and soil acidification, which affects plant vitality. In this study, the dynamics of ion deposition in Aleppo pine forest (Pinus halepensis Mill.) and black pine forest (Pinus nigra Arnold) on the eastern Adriatic coast are investigated, focusing on throughfall and bulk open field depositions. The aim of our research was to fill the gaps in understanding the influence of tree canopies on deposition fluxes in two different Mediterranean pine stands and to compare total inorganic nitrogen loads with critical loads. Over a period of two years, bulk open field precipitation and throughfall were sampled, measured and analysed using the ICP Forest methodology. The results indicate significant differences in ion deposition between bulk open field and throughfall, with throughfall showing higher values for almost all ions. The highest enrichment ratio was determined for K + . The comparison of the actual inorganic nitrogen load with the critical nitrogen load for Mediterranean pine forests revealed that the inorganic nitrogen load exceeded the critical load in the Aleppo pine forest. The application of peracetic acid (PAA) in the advanced oxidation process has been demonstrated to be an effective approach for treating aqueous organic pollutants. In this study, it is the first time that biogas residue biochar (BRBC) derived from sludge anaerobic digestion plants was prepared and used as a PAA activator for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. The optimal SMX removal could achieve 92 % within 120 min under acidic conditions. The SMX degradation was slightly enhanced in the presence of Cl - , while it could be inhibited by HCO 3 - . Quenching experiment and EPR analysis demonstrated that both radical and non-radical processes contributed to SMX degradation. ECOSAR analysis showed a significant reduction in intermediate toxicity. Meanwhile, BRBC700 exhibited excellent reusability and stability even in real water matrices. Drywood termites are problematic timber pests worldwide. Cryptotermes brevis , the West Indian drywood termite, is among the most important of these pests, in part due to its cryptic nature, making it hard to detect in structures and thereby easy to transport. Primary detections are commonly made by the observation of frass deposits evacuated through kick-holes, often leading to fumigation of the building to effectively eradicate the pest. However, after treatment, new frass piles are often discovered. It is, then, challenging to determine whether this frass represents reinfestation or is simply old frass dislodged from inactive nests. This may lead to unchecked termite proliferation or expensive fumigation when it is not needed. The ability to assess the age of the found frass would allow inspectors to determine whether a new infestation has occurred. Photocolorimetry has indicated that frass darkens over time, but large differences in the starting color of frass samples limit the usefulness of this as an aging method. Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis of the hexane extracts of C. brevis frass samples aged 0-22 months found differences between fresh frass (under 6 months) and those aged over 12 months but could not distinguish between 6- and 12-month-aged frass. Eight compounds accounted for over 70% of the differences between samples and are, thus, targets for chemical analysis of frass of unknown age. While this chemical frass analysis requires fairly sophisticated analytical tools, the cost associated with these processes would pale in comparison with those for unnecessarily fumigating a structure and thus merits further refinement to increase the accessibility of the method.

The estimation of foraging parameters is fundamental for understanding predator ecology. Predation and feeding can vary with multiple factors, such as prey availability, presence of kleptoparasites and human disturbance. However, our knowledge is mostly limited to local scales, which prevents studying effects of environmental factors across larger ecological gradients. Here, we compared inter-kill intervals and handling times of Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) across a large latitudinal gradient, from subarctic to the Mediterranean ecosystems, using a standardised dataset of predicted adult ungulate kills from 107 GPS-collared lynx from nine distinct populations in Europe. We analysed variations in these two foraging parameters in relation to proxies reflecting prey availability, scavengers' presence and human disturbance, to improve our understanding of lynx predation at a continental scale. We found that inter-kill intervals and handling times varied between populations, social status and in different seasons within the year. We observed marked differences in inter-kill intervals between populations, which do not appear to be driven by variation in handling time. Increases in habitat productivity (expressed by NDVI, used as a proxy for prey availability) resulted in reduced inter-kill intervals (i.e. higher kill rates). We observed less variation in handling (i.e. feeding) times, although presence of dominant scavengers (wild boars and brown bears) and higher human impact led to significantly shorter handling times. This suggests that kleptoparasitism and human disturbance may limit the energetic input that lynx can obtain from their prey. We also observed that the human impact on foraging parameters can be consistent between some populations but context-dependent for others, suggesting local adaptations by lynx. Our study highlights the value of large-scale studies based on standardised datasets, which can aid the implementation of effective management measures, as patterns observed in one area might not be necessarily transferable to other regions. Nest predation rates critically influence avian biodiversity and evolution. In the north temperate zone, increased nest failure along edges of forest fragments is hypothesized to play a major role in the disappearance of bird species from disturbed landscapes. However, we lack comprehensive syntheses from tropical latitudes, where biodiversity is highest and increasingly threatened by habitat fragmentation and disturbance. We assembled data from five decades of field studies across the global tropics (1,112 populations of 661 species) and used phylogenetic models to evaluate proposed predictors of nest success. We found significant effects of several traits, including adult body mass and nest architecture. Contrary to results from many temperate locations, anthropogenic habitat disruption did not consistently reduce nest success; in fact, raw nest success rates were lower in large tracts of primary forest than in disturbed or fragmented landscapes. Follow-up analyses within species, using a subset of 76 species for which we had estimates of nest survival in habitats with different levels of disruption, confirmed that neither disturbance nor fragmentation significantly influenced nest success. These results suggest that nest predation alone cannot explain observed declines in avian biodiversity in tropical forest fragments, raising new questions about the demographic processes that drive extinction in the tropics., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

The delay between disturbance events and genetic responses within populations is a common but surprisingly overlooked phenomenon in ecology and evolutionary and conservation genetics. If not accounted for when interpreting genetic data, this time lag problem can lead to erroneous conservation assessments. We (i) identify life-history traits related to longevity and reproductive strategies as the main determinants of time lags, (ii) evaluate potential confounding factors affecting genetic parameters during time lags, and (iii) propose approaches that allow controlling for time lags. The Permanent Forest Reserve (PFR) is recognised as one of the Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs) in Malaysia`s spatial planning. Incorporating biological factors alongside existing physical attributes is crucial to improve the classification of ESAs. It is important to attain biological diversity information to formulate biological factors, which include vertebrates such as bird communities. Birds are highly sensitive to changes within ecosystems; hence, they play a pivotal role in reflecting the overall ecological condition. Therefore, the study focused on assessing bird species' richness in the Kluang Forest Reserve (Kluang FR) and compared its bird diversity amongst five PFRs ESAs in southern Peninsular Malaysia. Methods such as mist netting, point count observations and call recording were deployed to calculate the alpha and beta diversity of the bird community. A total of 68 species comprised of 36 families were recorded and the white-rumped shama ( Copsychusmalabaricus ) was the most abundant species in all reserves studied. Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) revealed that the bird diversity in Kluang FR is more similar to bird santuary Panti Forest Reserve compared to the other four forest reserves and indicates that diversification of species richness. However, the absence of published species information in forest reserves poses challenges for comparing bird assemblages amongst different reserves. Globalization has spread thousands of invasive insect species into new world regions, 1 , 2 , 3 causing severe losses in ecosystem services. Previous work proposed that plant invasions facilitate insect invasions through the creation of niches for non-native herbivores. 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 Despite the impact of insect invasions, a comprehensive understanding is lacking on how invasion success varies among insect feeding groups. We therefore compiled the predominant larval trophic groups (herbivores, predators, parasites, detritivores, and brood-carers) for 5,839 non-native insect species in nine world regions to compare (1) proportions of species in each group between non-native species and the world's fauna, (2) how invasion success for each trophic group has changed over the last three centuries, and (3) how historical herbivore invasions are related to plant invasions over time and parasite invasions are related to herbivores. We find that herbivores represent a significantly larger proportion (52.4%) among non-native insects compared with the world fauna (38.4%), whereas proportions of non-native detritivores (including fungivores), predators, and brood-carers are significantly lower; parasite proportions do not significantly differ. Predators and detritivores dominated among invasions in the 18th century but subsequently diminished, likely due to changing invasion pathways, whereas proportions of herbivores, parasites, and brood-carers increased over time. We found herbivore invasions to lag 80 years behind plant invasions, whereas parasitoids appear to co-invade with their herbivore hosts. Nonylphenol (4-NP) has significant adverse effects on the male reproductive system. 4-NP is commonly used in agriculture as a plasticizer and pesticide emulsifier. In the current study, two soil samples with different textures were collected to evaluate the impact of soil components on the environmental existence of 4-NP among soil aggregates. It was found that the presence of soil POM resulted in 4-NP exhibiting a significantly polarized distribution in soil aggregates, instead of the expected increase in content with decreasing particle size. High levels of organic matter and metal oxides result in a high carrying capacity of small aggregates for 4-NP in both soil textures, while POM results in a higher carrying capacity of large aggregates for 4-NP in clay soil. Another important finding is that the existence of 4-NP in soil was regulated by the percentage of aggregates. The results of contribution shown that although small aggregates in sand presented stronger 4-NP carrying capacity, whereas 4-NP was mainly distributed in large aggregates in sand. For clay soil, 4-NP was predominantly located in small aggregates with the 4-NP contributions of small aggregates amounting to 63.17%, despite the highest carrying capacity of 4-NP was observed in large aggregates. The clearwing moth, Synanthedon bicingulata Staudinger, 1887 (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae), is a serious pest that infests cherry trees. This species, which is distributed in South Korea, was once regarded as S. hector found in Japan, but renamed as S. bicingulata based on morphology. Molecular data for this species are not available. Hence, we sequenced the 16,255-bp long complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of S. bicingulata . Phylogenetic analyses in the Cossoidea superfamily supported monophyly of the Synanthedon genus and Synanthedonini tribe. The genus Eusterinx Förster, 1869 is reported from the Afrotropical region for the first time. The new species E. africana sp. nov. from South Africa belonging to the subgenus Ischyracis is described and illustrated. The subgenus Dallatorrea Ashmead, 1902 is reduced to the synonym Ischyracis Förster, 1869 syn. n. An identification key to all known Ischyracis species of the world fauna is provided.

Microorganisms are integral to ecosystem functioning and host adaptation, yet the understanding of microbiomes in diverse beetle taxa remains limited. We conducted a comprehensive study to investigate the microbial composition of two red flat bark beetle species, Cucujus haematodes and C. cinnaberinus, and assessed the influence of host taxonomic relatedness and host tree species on their microbiomes. We sampled 67 larvae of two Cucujus taxa taken from 11 host tree species. 16S rRNA V4 fragment sequencing revealed distinct microbial communities associated with each Cucujus species, with host tree species significantly influencing microbiome composition. Alpha and beta diversity metrics indicated significant differences between microbial communities in both beetle and host tree species. Principal component analysis indicated distinct clustering based on host tree species but not for beetle species. This overlap could be attributed to the similar ecology of both Cucujus species. The detection of various bacteria, among which some have already been reported in saproxylophagous beetles, suggests that the red flat bark beetles ingest the bacteria via foraging on other wood-dwelling invertebrates. Our findings show the complex interplay between host taxonomy, microhabitat and microbial composition in Cucujus, providing insights into their ecological roles and conservation implications. Populations of forest trees exhibit large temporal fluctuations, but little is known about the synchrony of these fluctuations across space, including their sign, magnitude, causes and characteristic scales. These have important implications for metapopulation persistence and theoretical community ecology. Using data from permanent forest plots spanning local, regional and global spatial scales, we measured spatial synchrony in tree population growth rates over sub-decadal and decadal timescales and explored the relationship of synchrony to geographical distance. Synchrony was high at local scales of less than 1 km, with estimated Pearson correlations of approximately 0.6-0.8 between species' population growth rates across pairs of quadrats. Synchrony decayed by approximately 17-44% with each order of magnitude increase in distance but was still detectably positive at distances of 100 km and beyond. Dispersal cannot explain observed large-scale synchrony because typical seed dispersal distances (<100 m) are far too short to couple the dynamics of distant forests on decadal timescales. We attribute the observed synchrony in forest dynamics primarily to the effect of spatially synchronous environmental drivers (the Moran effect), in particular climate, although pests, pathogens and anthropogenic drivers may play a role for some species.

The banded langur (Presbytis femoralis) is a critically endangered primate, which within Malaysia has not been known to extend significantly outside the state of Johor. Traditionally, distribution studies on this highly threatened primate have relied on conventional methods such as DNA identification, live counting, and camera trapping. However, ethnoprimatology offers an alternative approach to data collection, involving the active participation of indigenous and local communities possessing valuable knowledge and experience with local primate species. This study employed an integrated approach incorporating ethnoprimatology by utilizing pooled local expert opinion, local surveys, interviews, and fecal DNA analysis, resulting in a novel distribution range for the banded langur. The combination of expert opinions revealed this species' most optimistic distribution scenario across Johor and Pahang, inhabiting various ecosystems, including lowland forests, peat swamps, and human-modified landscapes. Further interviews and surveys conducted within the Orang Asli community in Tasik Chini and Tasek Bera have provided additional support for the revised distribution, documenting occurrences of banded langur utilization in indigenous practices, such as food consumption, cultural beliefs, medicinal applications, and craftsmanship. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated genetic differentiation between populations in Johor and Pahang, with the populations in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia likely serving as ancestral sources for other populations. Brown root rot disease (BRRD) is a highly destructive tree disease. Early diagnosis of BRRD has been challenging because the first symptoms and signs are often observed after extensive tissue colonization. Existing molecular detection methods, all based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, were developed without testing against global Phellinus noxius isolates, other wood-decay fungi, or host plant tissues. This study aimed to develop SYBR Green real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays for P. noxius . The primer pair Pn&#95;ITS&#95;F/Pn&#95;ITS&#95;R targets the ITS, and the primer pair Pn&#95;NLR&#95;F/Pn&#95;NLR&#95;R targets a P. noxius -unique group of homologous genes identified through a comparative genomics analysis. The homologous genes belong to the nucleotide-binding-oligomerization-domain-like receptor (NLR) superfamily. The new primer pairs and a previous primer pair G1F/G1R were optimized for qPCR conditions and tested for specificity using 61 global P. noxius isolates, 5 other Phellinus species, and 22 non- Phellinus wood-decay fungal species. Although all three primer pairs could detect as little as 100 fg (approximately 2.99 copies) of P. noxius genomic DNA, G1F/G1R had the highest specificity and Pn&#95;NLR&#95;F/Pn&#95;NLR&#95;R had the highest efficiency. To avoid false positives, the cutoff quantification cycle values were determined as 34 for G1F/G1R, 29 for Pn&#95;ITS&#95;F/Pn&#95;ITS&#95;R, and 32 for Pn&#95;NLR&#95;F/Pn&#95;NLR&#95;R. We further validated these qPCR assays using Ficus benjamina seedlings artificially inoculated with P. noxius , six tree species naturally infected by P. noxius , rhizosphere soil, and bulk soil. Background: Forest trees, particularly at a young age in afforestation, are susceptible to bark gnawing by herbivorous rodents such as voles. Few preventive measures for vole damage exist, although mowing to control herbaceous vegetation is often suggested. However, no empirical evidence supports the claim that mowing prevents or inhibits rodent damage to seedlings in a forest ecosystem. We examined the effects of single mowing applications on rodent population dynamics and the amount of damage they cause. The study was conducted at 34 randomly selected European beech forest plantations in Poland, with half manually mowed in late summer. In each plantation, we monitored the population dynamics of small rodents every 2 months from December 2019 to April 2021, and/or measured the level of damage to tree saplings monthly., Results: The amount of damage followed a clear seasonal pattern with peaks in late autumn ranging from 0 to 40% of saplings per plantation. Mowing did not alter the pattern of population dynamics of small rodents (including voles and mice) on the plantations, nor did it reduce sapling damage caused by rodents. In recent years, the oak lace bug, Corythucha arcuata, has emerged as a significant threat to European oak forests. This species, native to North America, has in the last two decades rapidly extended its range in Europe, raising concerns about its potential impact on the continent's invaluable oak populations. To address this growing concern, we conducted an extensive study to assess the distribution, colonization patterns, and potential ecological niche of the oak lace bug in Europe. We gathered 1792 unique presence coordinates from 21 Eurasian countries, utilizing diverse sources such as research observations, citizen science initiatives, GBIF database, and social media reports. To delineate the realized niche and future distribution, we employed an ensemble species distribution modelling (SDM) framework. Two future greenhouse gas scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) were considered across three-time intervals (2021-2040, 2061-2080, and 2081-2100) to project and evaluate the species' potential distribution in the future. Our analysis revealed that significant hotspots rich in host species occurrence for this invasive insect remain uninvaded so far, even within its suitable habitat. Furthermore, the native ranges of Turkey oak (Quercus cerris L.) and Hungarian oak (Quercus frainetto L.) species offer entirely suitable environments for the oak lace bug. In contrast, the pedunculate oak and sessile oak distribution ranges currently show only 40 % and 50 % suitability for colonization, respectively. However, our predictive models indicate a significant transformation in the habitat suitability of the oak lace bug, with suitability for these two oak species increasing by up to 90 %. This shift underlines an evolving landscape where the oak lace bug may exploit more of its available habitats than initially expected. Ganoderma lucidum, known as the "mushroom of immortality," is a white rot fungus renowned for its medicinal properties, attributed to its bioactive compounds. Although species with similar morphological traits to G. lucidum are found across the globe, precise identification is made possible through DNA barcoding and molecular phylogenetic analysis. Global cultivation and wild harvesting of G. lucidum are both done in response to the growing market needs. Artificial cultivation is typically performed on sawdust, but other woody substrates and the wood log method are also employed. This cultivation leverages the fungus's ecological role in converting industrial and agricultural solid wastes into biomass, thereby producing functional food and potential pharmaceutical sources. Restoration efforts to maintain oak-dominated habitats and enhance biodiversity often employ selective thinning, but its long-term effect on multiple taxa remains unclear. This study examines the effects of halo thinning around pedunculate oak on epiphytic and tree-related microhabitat (TreM) diversity in the boreal-nemoral forest zone. We revisited nine sites in Latvia with 150-331-year-old oaks, where thinning was conducted in 2003-2004. Epiphyte species composition and cover were assessed, and TreMs were evaluated using standardised methods. Diversity indices (Hill numbers, q = 0; 1; 2; 3) and statistical models (LMMs, Poisson GLMMs) were used to analyse the effects of thinning on species richness and TreM occurrence. Halo thinning over the past 20 years has not caused significant differences in epiphyte or TreM diversity, though managed trees exhibited a higher occurrence of the most common microhabitats. These findings suggest halo thinning may enhance specific TreM features but do not substantially promote epiphyte and TreM diversity. Future research should implement systematic monitoring, deriving the relationships between the conditions after the thinning and their effects, thus serving as the basis for adaptive habitat management strategies. Expanding the scope of such studies is essential for developing evidence-based forest management strategies.

In the Białowieża Forest, Norway spruce is the preferred host tree species for wood ants, both in coniferous and mixed stands; thus, spruce mortality as a consequence of a continuous spruce bark beetle outbreak in the Białowieża Forest since 2012 could have severe consequences for wood ant colonies, as well as their vitality and distribution. The main aim of this study was to assess whether the bark beetle outbreak had any effects on wood ant nest density and abundance and whether we could find any factors affecting the dead spruce distribution around ant nests. A re-inventory of active and abandoned wood ant nests in our study area was conducted from April to July 2022, using the same procedure as the previous inventory performed in 2016. The wood ant nest density was 0.11 per ha and remained practically the same relative to that determined in 2016. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacteria responsible for many hospital-acquired infections. Phages are promising alternatives for treating P. aeruginosa infections, which are often intrinsically resistant. The combination of phage and antibiotics in clearing bacterial infection holds promise due to increasing reports of enhanced effectiveness when both are used together. The aim of the study is to isolate and characterize a novel P. aeruginosa phage and determine its effectiveness in in vitro combination with antibiotics in controlling P. aeruginosa . In this study, a novel jumbo myophage HPP-Temi infecting P. aeruginosa Pa9 (PP334386) was isolated from household sewage. Electron micrographs of the phage were obtained to determine the morphological features of HPP-Temi virions. Complete genome analysis and a combination of Pseudomonas phage HPP-Temi with antibiotics were examined. The phage HPP-Temi was able to productively infect P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027 but was unable to infect a closely related genus. The phage was stable at 4-37 °C, 0.5% NaCl, and pH 8 for at least one hour. The HPP-Temi genome is a 302,719-bp-long dsDNA molecule with a GC content of 46.46%. The genome was predicted to have 436 ORFs and 7 tRNA genes. No virulence factor-related genes, antimicrobial resistance, or temperate lifestyle-associated genes were found in the phage HPP-Temi genome. Phage HPP-Temi is most closely related to the known or tentative representatives of the Pawinskivirus genus and can be proposed as a representative for the creation of a novel phage species in that genus. The phage and antibiotics (Ciprofloxacin) combination at varying phage titers (10 3 , 10 6 , 10 9 ) were used against P. aeruginosa Pa9 (PP334386) at 3.0 × 10 8 CFU/mL, which was carried out in triplicate. The result showed that combining antibiotics with phage significantly reduced the bacteria count at 10 3 and 10 6 titers, while no growth was observed at 10 9 PFU/mL. This suggests that the effect of phage HPP-Temi in combination with antibiotics is a potential and promising agent for the control of P. aeruginosa infections.
