Orientador: Cristina de Campos Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Geociências Resumo: A vida e a obra de Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) são marcadas por dois grandes empreendimentos: a viagem do Beagle (1831-1836) e a publicação de A origem das espécies, em 1859. A viagem pelo hemisfério Sul foi determinante para a vida de Darwin e marcou toda sua toda sua carreira após a qual esboçou, em 1837, suas primeiras ideias acerca da Evolução que o levariam à publicação de 1859. O período entre 1836 e 1859 foi abordado muitas vezes de forma teleológica, com vistas a destacar os aspectos relacionados a publicação de A origem das espécies. As décadas de 1840 e 1850, todavia, testemunharam a consolidação de Darwin como um naturalista maduro e bem relacionado com os principais nomes da ciência britânica, contribui para isto sua atuação o Projeto Cirripédia. Entre 1846 e 1854, Darwin se dedicou a rever a taxonomia dos cirrípedes e incluir nela os novos espécimes que analisou e descreveu. No desenvolvimento desse trabalho, ele mobilizou vários colaboradores que colocaram em circulação espécimes e informações de diversas partes do mundo e propiciaram a ele realizar seus estudos e publicar os quatro volumes sobre os cirrípedes a partir de sua casa. Entre seus colaboradores havia homens de ciência renomados como Charles Lyell e Louis Agassiz, cuja relação com Darwin foi amplamente abordada pela historiografia, contudo, há outra parcela de colaboradores que recebeu pouca ou nenhuma atenção dos historiadores. São homens e mulheres, remunerados ou não, muitos dos quais anônimos e das classes baixas que auxiliaram na produção de ilustrações, no transporte dos espécimes e manuscritos, na apresentação de fatos e espécimes novos, no fornecimento de instrumentos ópticos e na tradução de textos. O objetivo aqui é compreender como Darwin construiu as relações com seus colaboradores no contexto do Projeto Cirripédia, com vistas a destacar as contribuições e recompensas dos diversos atores envolvidos, em especial desse segundo grupo. A partir desse objetivo foram elaboradas duas questões norteadoras: Como esta rede de colaboradores contribuiu para o Projeto Cirripédia? Quais os interesses levaram os colaboradores a assumirem os custos de participação nesta rede e como foram recompensados por suas contribuições? O atendimento a essa proposta foi feito a partir da análise das correspondências relacionadas ao referido projeto, que levou a agregação de outros documentos ao corpus. Os resultados encontrados indicam a relevância da comunicação epistolar para Darwin, tendo auxiliado na ampliação de sua rede colaboradores, a fim de atender as demandas do projeto, e na organização infraestrutura de diversos aspectos acessórios. As cartas ainda se constituíram como espaços para especulação, crítica e discussão de ideias, troca de incentivos e orientações entre correspondentes distantes dos pontos de vistas espacial e social, o que as qualificava como uma forma de recompensa. Foram identificadas e analisadas outras formas de recompensa, como a própria participação na rede, que representava àqueles que se dispunham a colaborar com o projeto a possibilidade de entrar em contato como novos colaboradores e, num contexto anterior à profissionalização da ciência, serem reconhecidos como praticantes de História Natural Abstract: The life and work of Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) are marked by two major undertakings: the Beagle voyage (1831-1836) and the publication of The Origin of Species, in 1859. The voyage through the southern hemisphere was decisive for Darwin's life and marked his entire career, after which he sketched, in 1837, his first ideas about Evolution that would lead him to 1859's publication. The period between 1836 and 1859 was approached many times in a teleological way, with a view to highlight aspects related to the publication of The Origin of Species. The 1840s and 1850s, however, witnessed the consolidation of Darwin as a mature naturalist and well-connected with the main names of british science, Cirripedia Project contributes to this. Between 1846 and 1854, Darwin devoted himself to revising the taxonomy of cirripeds and including in it the new specimens he analyzed and described. In the development of this work, he mobilized several collaborators who circulated specimens and information from different parts of the world and enabled him to carry out his studies and publish the four volumes on cirripedes from his home. Among its collaborators were renowned men of science such as Charles Lyell and Louis Agassiz, whose relationship with Darwin was widely approached by historiography, however, there is another portion of collaborators who received little or no attention from historians. They are men and women, paid or not, many of whom anonymous and from the lower classes who helped in the production of illustrations, in the transport of specimens and manuscripts, in the presentation of facts and new specimens, in the supply of optical instruments and in the translation of texts. The objective here is to understand how Darwin built relationships with his collaborators in the Cirripedia Project's context, with a view to highlighting the contributions and rewards of the various actors involved, especially this second group. Based on this objective, two guiding questions were elaborated: How did this network of collaborators contribute to the Cirripedia Project? What interests led him to assume the costs of participating in this network and how were they rewarded for their contributions? The accomplishment of this proposal was made from the analysis of correspondence related to the aforementioned project, which led to the aggregation of other documents to the corpus. The results found indicate the relevance of epistolary communication for Darwin, having helped in the expansion of its collaborators network, in order to achieve the demands of the project, and in the infrastructure organization of several accessory aspects. The letters also constituted spaces for speculation, criticism and discussion of ideas, exchange of incentives and guidance between correspondents distant spatial and sociallly, which qualified them as a form of reward. Other forms of reward were identified and analyzed, such as the participation in the network itself, which represented to those who were willing to collaborate with the project the possibility of contacting new collaborators and, in a context prior to the professionalization of science, being recognized as practitioners of Natural History Doutorado Política Científica e Tecnologica Doutor em Política Científica e Tecnológica CAPES 001
