When glucose and Amadori products are auto-oxidized, glycation occurs, resulting in the formation of early (Amadori) and late advanced glycation end products (AGEs), as well as free radicals. Glycation and an increase in free radical activity induce diabetic complications. Antioxidant and antiglycation compounds may aid in the prevention of oxidation and glycation. The goal of this study was to assess the antiglycation and antioxidant capacity of C-phycocyanin (C-PC) derived from Plectonema sp. The DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), nitric oxide, hydroxyl radical scavenging activities and ferric ions reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays were used to assess antioxidant activity, while an in vitro bovine serum albumin-methyl glyoxal glycation (BSA-MG) model was used to assess glycation inhibitory potential. Glycation inhibition was measured using a variety of spectroscopic and biochemical parameters, including UV-visible & fluorescence spectroscopy, ketoamine, carbonyl and hydroxymethyl furfural content, as well as free lysine & free arginine estimations. In vitro, C-PC exhibited dose-dependent potent antioxidant activity, but lacked significant antiglycation potential. As a result, it is recommended that further studies be conducted to evaluate the antiglycation potential of C-PC.

AbstractThe present study aims at the isolation of Cr (VI) tolerant microalgae from wastewater collected from local bike garages. The wastewater had a continued spillage of engine oil, petrol, grease, and chain lube waste. The isolated microalgae were first sequenced by using 18S rRNA sequencing method. The nucleotide sequence obtained was analyzed via BLAST, the isolated microalga showed maximum similarity with Scenedesmus species. The sequence was submitted to NCBI, and the microalgae was identified as Scenedesmus species GTAF1 IU accession no. OM903800. The bioremediation potential of the isolated microalgae was evaluated for the removal of Cr (VI) in synthetic wastewater. The Cr (VI) removal efficiency was estimated at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 g L−1 of inoculum concentration under autotrophic and heterotrophic modes. The highest removal efficiency of 98.9% and 99.9% was obtained at 0.8 g L−1 inoculum concentration under autotrophic and heterotrophic modes of operation respectively. On increasing the metal concentration from 5 to 10 ppm, a decrease in the biomass quality and quantity was observed. This increased metal stress resulted in an enhanced carbohydrate and lipid concentration. However, the protein concentration was found to be decreased. Cr (VI) removal efficiency was highest in heterotrophic conditions. This study provides a novel insight for removing Cr (VI) and concomitantly enhancing the lipid content of isolated strains under heterotrophic conditions. Owing to enhanced lipid content, the reported curation of wastewater may also be used in harnessing the potential of isolated microalga in biofuel production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

These cumulate an elevated susceptibility to kidney failure, nerve impairment, blindness, atherosclerosis, heart ailments, and even strokes. Recent investigations underscore the diverse roles of associated biomarkers in diabetes progression. Among these are biomarkers for diabetes mellitus such as DPP-4, PPAR-ϒ, SGLT-2, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase, which are linked to the onset of diabetes and its related problems. As a result of undesirable adverse consequences linked to extant synthetic antidiabetic medications, research attention is increasingly directed towards formulating natural antidiabetic drugs, aiming for enhanced efficacy and reduced complications. Cyanobacteria stand out as a pivotal repository of natural bioactive metabolites extensively harnessed for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical development. The potent bioactive compounds sourced from cyanobacteria hold substantial promise, kindling high expectations in scientific research and presenting vast prospects for drug discovery and advancement. Some of these bioactive compounds have demonstrated impressive effectiveness, displaying successful applications across various phases of clinical trials. This review strives to provide a more precise understanding of diabetes mellitus, encompassing its clinical manifestation, epidemiological data, complications, and prevailing treatment modalities. Industrialization and globalization have increased the demand for petroleum products that has increased a load on natural energy resources. The escalating fossil fuel utilization has resulted in surpassing the Earth's capacity to absorb greenhouse gases, necessitating the exploration of sustainable bioenergy alternatives to mitigate emissions. Biofuels, derived from algae, offer promising solutions to alleviate fossil fuel dependency. Algae, often regarded as third-generation biofuels, present numerous advantages owing to their high biomass production rates. While algae have been utilized for their bioactive compounds, their capability as biomass for the production of biofuel has gained traction among researchers. Various biofuels such as bio-hydrogen, bio-methane, bio-ethanol, bio-oil, and bio-butanol can be derived from algae through diverse processes like fermentation, photolysis, pyrolysis, and transesterification. Despite the enormous commercial potential of algae-derived biofuels, challenges such as high cultivation costs persist. However, leveraging the utilization of algae byproducts could improve economic viability of biofuel production.
