Accurate and efficient 3D spatio-semantic Underground Utility Network (UUN) models looks indispensable for the whole cycle of its planning, construction, maintenance, and all kinds of the decision-making process. We do believe that UUN model should be able to provide multiple representations, considering data accessibility and model comprehensibility, but how to define these levels of detail (LoD)? In this research, we made the hypothesis that LoD selection is related to the complexity of task to be performed. This paper aims at designing a decomposition method of the decision-making task and defining the level of complexity to evaluate the task. Then based on the complexity level, select the content of UUN model that is most suitable for the task with the best representation. This paper discusses the possible connections between the LoD of 3D UUN model and with decision-making tasks, providing solutions to guide decisions of model selection.

Level of detail (LoD) is a key concept for 3D city modeling to optimise visualisation. The LoDs of CityGML shows this trend. This paper explores the relevance of having LoD for visualising 3D model of Underground Utility Networks (UUN). A new approach is proposed for designing multiple LoDs modeling in creating an explicit link between the content of the 3D model and the decision-making process (or operational tasks) to be performed by a user. This Multiple Level of detail Approach (MLA) is divided into four steps. The first step requires defining the visualisation needs in terms of five variables (geometry, topology, semantic, contextual information, and semiology). Next, tasks to be performed are analyzed and categorized. Finally, a matrix of possible LoDs is created for all tasks and the minimum LoD required is proposed. In this paper, we applied this approach for the use case of granting connection permits to water and sewer networks. Learning aspects are proposed in the discussion.

Abstract The emergence of publicly accessible artificial intelligence (AI) large language models such as ChatGPT has given rise to global conversations on the implications of AI capabilities. Emergent research on AI has challenged the assumption that creative potential is a uniquely human trait thus, there seems to be a disconnect between human perception versus what AI is objectively capable of creating. Here, we aimed to assess the creative potential of humans in comparison to AI. In the present study, human participants (N = 151) and GPT-4 provided responses for the Alternative Uses Task, Consequences Task, and Divergent Associations Task. We found that AI was robustly more creative along each divergent thinking measurement in comparison to the human counterparts. Specifically, when controlling for fluency of responses, AI was more original and elaborate. The present findings suggest that the current state of AI language models demonstrate higher creative potential than human respondents.

Traditional neural decoders model the relationship between neural activity and behavior within individual trials of a single experimental session, neglecting correlations across trials and sessions. However, animals exhibit similar neural activities when performing the same behavioral task, and their behaviors are influenced by past experiences from previous trials. To exploit these informative correlations in large datasets, we introduce two complementary models: a multi-session reduced-rank model that shares similar behaviorally-relevant statistical structure in neural activity across sessions to improve decoding, and a multi-session state-space model that shares similar behavioral statistical structure across trials and sessions. Applied across 433 sessions spanning 270 brain regions in the International Brain Laboratory public mouse Neuropixels dataset, our decoders demonstrate improved decoding accuracy for four distinct behaviors compared to traditional approaches. Unlike existing deep learning approaches, our models are interpretable and efficient, uncovering latent behavioral dynamics that govern animal decision-making, quantifying single-neuron contributions to decoding behaviors, and identifying different activation timescales of neural activity across the brain. Higher olefins (HO) are a category of unsaturated hydrocarbons widely used in industry applications to make products essential for daily human life. Establishing safe exposure limits requires a solid data matrix that facilitates understanding of their toxicological profile. This in turn allows for data to be read across to other members of the category, which are structurally similar and have predictable physico-chemical properties. Five independent subchronic oral toxicity studies were conducted in Wistar rats with Oct-1-ene, Nonene, branched, Octadec-1-ene, Octadecene and hydrocarbon C12-30, olefin-rich, ethylene polymn. by product, at doses ranging from 20 to 1000 mg/kg bw. These HO were selected considering gut absorption, carbon chain length, double-bond position and carbon backbone structural variations. Generally, limited and non-adverse toxicity effects were observed at the end of the treatment for short carbon chain HO. For instance, alpha 2u-globulin nephropathy in the male rats and liver hypertrophy. No clear trend in systemic toxicity was linked to the double-bond position. Key factors for hazard assessment include absorption, carbon chain length, and branching, with Nonene, branched, identified as the worst-case substance. Most of the available data on diffusion in natural clayey rocks consider tracer diffusion in the absence of a salinity gradient despite the fact that such gradients are frequently found in natural and engineered subsurface environments. To assess the role of such gradients on the diffusion properties of clayey materials, through-diffusion experiments were carried out in the presence and absence of a salinity gradient using salt-diffusion and radioisotope tracer techniques. The experiments were carried out with vermiculite samples that contained equal proportions of interparticle and interlayer porosities so as to assess also the role played by the two types of porosities on the diffusion of water and ions. Data were interpreted using both a classical Fickian diffusion model and with a reactive transport code, CrunchClay that can handle multi-porosity diffusion processes in the presence of charged surfaces. By combining experimental and simulated data, we demonstrated that (i) the flux of water diffusing through vermiculite interlayer porosity was minor compared to that diffusing through the interparticle porosity, and (ii) a model considering at least three types of porous volumes (interlayer, interparticle diffuse layer, and bulk interparticle) was necessary to reproduce consistently the variations of neutral and charged species diffusion as a function of salinity gradient conditions., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Higher olefins (HO) are used primarily as intermediates in the production of other chemicals, such as polymers, fatty acids, plasticizer alcohols, surfactants, lubricants, amine oxides, and detergent alcohols. The potential toxicity of five HO (i.e., 1-Octene, Nonene, Decene, Hexadecene, and 1-Octadecene) with carbon ranging from C8 to C18 was examined in a combined repeated dose and reproduction/developmental toxicity screening study (OECD TG 422). These five HO were administered to Han Wistar rats by gavage at 0 (controls), 100, 300, and 1000 mg/kg bw/day. As a group of substances, adaptive changes in the liver (liver weight increase without pathological evidence), as well as increased kidney weight in male rats, were observed in HO with carbon numbers from C8 to C10. The overall systemic no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) for all HO was determined at 1000 mg/kg bw/day. In the reproductive/developmental toxicity assessment, offspring viability, size, and weights were reduced in litters from females treated with Nonene at 1000 mg/kg bw/day. The overall no observed effects level (NOEL) for reproductive toxicity was considered to be 300 mg/kg bw/day for Nonene and 1000 mg/kg bw/day for the other four HO, respectively. These data significantly enrich the database on the toxicity of linear and branched HO, allowing comparison with similar data published on a range of linear and branched HO. We introduce a mathematical model based on mixture theory intended to describe the tumor-immune system interactions within the tumor microenvironment. The equations account for the geometry of the tumor expansion, and the displacement of the immune cells, driven by diffusion and chemotactic mechanisms. They also take into account the constraints in terms of nutrient and oxygen supply. The numerical investigations analyze the impact of the different modeling assumptions and parameters. Depending on the parameters, the model can reproduce elimination, equilibrium or escape phases and it identifies a critical role of oxygen/nutrient supply in shaping the tumor growth. Scanning-probe and wide-field magnetic microscopes based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have enabled advances in the study of biology and materials, but each method has drawbacks. Here, we implement an alternative method for nanoscale magnetic microscopy based on optical control of the charge state of NV centers in a dense layer near the diamond surface. By combining a donut-beam super-resolution technique with optically detected magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we imaged the magnetic fields produced by single 30 nm iron-oxide nanoparticles. The magnetic microscope has a lateral spatial resolution of ∼100 nm, and it resolves the individual magnetic dipole features from clusters of nanoparticles with interparticle spacings down to ∼190 nm. The magnetic feature amplitudes are more than an order of magnitude larger than those obtained by confocal magnetic microscopy due to the narrower optical point-spread function and the shallow depth of NV centers. We analyze the magnetic nanoparticle images and sensitivity as a function of the microscope's spatial resolution and show that the signal-to-noise ratio for nanoparticle detection does not degrade as the spatial resolution improves. We identify sources of background fluorescence that limit the present performance, including diamond second-order Raman emission and imperfect NV charge state control. Our method, which uses <10 mW laser power and can be parallelized by patterned illumination, introduces a promising format for nanoscale magnetic imaging.

Penicillium and Talaromyces spp. are environmental saprophytic molds rarely encountered as infectious agents in humans and animals. This article summarizes the clinical features, treatment, and outcomes of proven infections caused by Penicillium or Talaromyces in four dogs in France. Two dogs had disseminated infections, while the other two had a localized form. All dogs had positive histopathological results showing the presence of hyaline septate hyphae and a positive fungal culture with typical Penicillium conidiophores. Talaromyces georgiensis (n = 1), Penicillium labradorum (n = 2), and Penicillium from section Ramosa series Raistrickiorum (n = 1), were identified based on Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) Sanger sequencing. The dogs were initially treated with ketoconazole or itraconazole. Second-line treatment was initiated in three dogs, but after several relapses, the prognosis remained poor. Since the 1990s, 18 cases of Penicillium or Talaromyces infections in dogs have been described worldwide. This series of four reports brings new cases to those already reported in the literature, which are probably underestimated in the world., (© The Author(s) 2023. Phosphodiesterases (PDE) type 3 and 4 promote vasoconstriction by hydrolysing cAMP. In experimental heart failure (HF), PDE3 makes PDE4 redundant in aorta, but it is not known if this occurs in resistance vessels, such as mesenteric artery. As PDE2 is increased in the failing myocardium, its possible role in the vasculature also needs to be addressed. Here, the function of PDE2, PDE3 and PDE4 in rat mesenteric arteries was characterized in experimental HF. Mesenteric arteries were isolated from rats sacrificed 22 weeks after surgical stenosis of the ascending aorta (HF), or Sham surgery. PDE inhibitors were used to probe isoenzyme contributions in enzymatic and isometric tension assays. PDE2 and PDE4 activities, but not PDE3 activity, facilitate contraction produced by the thromboxane analogue U46619 in Sham arteries, while in HF all three isoenzymes contribute to this response. NO synthase inhibition by L-NAME abolished the action of the PDE2 inhibitor. L-NAME eliminated the contribution of PDE4 in HF, but unmasked a contribution for PDE3 in Sham. PDE3 and PDE4 activities attenuated relaxant response to β-adrenergic stimulation in Sham and HF. PDE2 did not participate in cAMP or cGMP-mediated relaxant responses. PDE3 and PDE4 cAMP-hydrolysing activities were smaller in HF mesenteric arteries, while PDE2 activity was scarce in both groups. Endothelial cells and arterial myocytes displayed PDE2 immunolabelling. We highlight that, by contrast with previous observations in aorta, PDE4 participates equally as PDE3 in contracting mesenteric artery in HF. The nervous system is today recognized to play an important role in the development of cancer. Indeed, neurons extend long processes (axons) that grow and infiltrate tumors in order to regulate the progression of the disease in a positive or negative way, depending on the type of neuron considered. Mathematical modeling of this biological process allows to formalize the nerve-tumor interactions and to test hypotheses in silico to better understand this phenomenon. In this work, we introduce a system of differential equations modeling the progression of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) coupled with associated changes in axonal innervation. The study of the asymptotic behavior of the model confirms the experimental observations that PDAC development is correlated with the type and densities of axons in the tissue. We study then the identifiability and the sensitivity of the model parameters. The identifiability analysis informs on the adequacy between the parameters of the model and the experimental data and the sensitivity analysis on the most contributing factors on the development of cancer. It leads to significant insights on the main neural checkpoints and mechanisms controlling the progression of pancreatic cancer. Aims: Promoting cardiomyocyte renewal represents a major therapeutic approach for heart regeneration and repair. Our study aims to investigate the relevance of FGF10 as a potential target for heart regeneration., Methods and Results: Our results first reveal that Fgf10 levels are up-regulated in the injured ventricle after MI. Adult mice with reduced Fgf10 expression subjected to MI display impaired cardiomyocyte proliferation and enhanced cardiac fibrosis, leading to a worsened cardiac function and remodelling post-MI. In contrast, conditional Fgf10 overexpression post-MI revealed that, by enhancing cardiomyocyte proliferation and preventing scar-promoting myofibroblast activation, FGF10 preserves cardiac remodelling and function. Moreover, FGF10 activates major regenerative pathways including the regulation of Meis1 expression levels, the Hippo signalling pathway and a pro-glycolytic metabolic switch. Finally, we demonstrate that elevated FGF10 levels in failing human hearts correlate with reduced fibrosis and enhanced cardiomyocyte proliferation., Conclusions: Altogether, our study shows that FGF10 promotes cardiac regeneration and repair through two cellular mechanisms: elevating cardiomyocyte renewal and limiting fibrosis. Diffusion is the main transport process of water and solutes in clay-rich porous media owing to their very low permeability, so they are widely used as barriers against contaminant spreading. However, the prediction of contaminant mobility can be very complicated when these media are partially water-saturated. We conducted diffusion experiments for water (HTO and HDO) and ions ( 22 Na + and 125 I - ) through partially water saturated compacted kaolinite, a weakly charged clay material, to quantify the distinct diffusive behavior of these species. The osmosis method was used to set kaolinite samples at 67, 86 and 100% saturation. The results showed that desaturation led to a sharp decrease in diffusive rates by factors of 6.5, 18 and 35 for HTO, 125 I - and 22 Na + , respectively, from 100 to 67% of the degree of saturation. Thus, to interpret water diffusivities, we proposed a model taking into account the diffusion of water in both gas and liquid phases, using diffusion data obtained for ions, considered as inert species. This model was capable of properly predicting water diffusive flux, especially at a low degree of saturation (67% saturation), for which the assumption made for the occurrence of air phase continuity throughout the sample appears to be more relevant than at 86% saturation., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Neuronal nerve processes in the tumor microenvironment were highlighted recently. However, the origin of intra-tumoral nerves remains poorly known, in part because of technical difficulties in tracing nerve fibers via conventional histological preparations. Here, we employ three-dimensional (3D) imaging of cleared tissues for a comprehensive analysis of sympathetic innervation in a murine model of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Our results support two independent, but coexisting, mechanisms: passive engulfment of pre-existing sympathetic nerves within tumors plus an active, localized sprouting of axon terminals into non-neoplastic lesions and tumor periphery. Ablation of the innervating sympathetic nerves increases tumor growth and spread. This effect is explained by the observation that sympathectomy increases intratumoral CD163 + macrophage numbers, which contribute to the worse outcome. Altogether, our findings provide insights into the mechanisms by which the sympathetic nervous system exerts cancer-protective properties in a mouse model of PDAC., (© 2022. The Author(s).)
