A compreensão da dinâmica entre evapotranspiração de referência (ETo), evapotranspiração de cultura (ETc) e coeficiente de cultura (Kc) e fundamental em irrigação. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a relação entre uma base de dados de ETc da cana-de-açúcar medidos por um lisímetro de pesagem eletrônico de grande porte e Kc e ETo calculados. O lisímetro está instalado em uma área localizada na cidade de Piracicaba, SP, em um cultivo de cana-planta da cultivar RB867515. Para a análise, estimou-se a ETo pelo método de Penman-Monteith e, para a seleção dos dados de ETc, fez-se a seleção de ETo, ETc e Kc baseando-se nos dias em que o Kc foi igual ou inferior a quatro. Posteriormente, excluiu-se os dados em que os dias apresentaram déficit hídrico superiores a zero e agrupou-se todos aqueles próximos entre si anteriores a 201 dias (grupo 1) e todos os próximos entre si posteriores a 385 dias (grupo 2). A ETc média no período de crescimento considerando os grupos 1 e 2 foi de 3,38 mm dia-1 e o Kc médio obtido nestes grupos foi de 1,39. O resultado obtido pode auxiliar no cálculo correto da lâmina de irrigação na cultura.

The decoupling factor (Ω) reflects the leading mechanisms responsible for canopy transpiration and allows to know the relevance of the control of stomatal or canopy conductance on transpiration (T). The Ω is strongly dependent on water availability and can be a good approach to describe how plants minimize excessive water loss by increasing the dominance of biotic factors that controls evapotranspiration under water deficit conditions. We provided an overview of how the Ω concept can be broadly used and applied for studying the sensitivity of evapotranspiration and water conservation potential of canopies under water deficit conditions. A decoupling condition indicates that, under water deficit, the increase of canopy resistance will not have control over the transpiration. Therefore, a structural context of the canopy in which predominantly uncoupled regions will have a lower capacity to reduce evapotranspiration and avoid water losses. Furthermore, because of the water deficit, stomatal closure restricts photosynthesis more than transpiration, and water use efficiency can be lower in decoupled canopies compared to more coupled ones. Yet, we summarized the characteristics that depict structural context predisposing coupled or decoupled conditions that can indicate the capacity of canopy/crop to reduce excessive water losses and maintain a high assimilation/transpiration relation under water deficit.e farmers to design disease management programs accordingly to avert yield losses.

CONTEXT Limited land availability and an increasing global population are challenges faced by the agricultural sector in the coming decades. The silvopastoral system is an efficient alternative to full sun pastures that could be used to sustainably intensify animal and crop production. However, the adoption of this system is being held back by a lack of knowledge on how the trees in such a system should be arranged in order to avoid detrimental effects on pasture growth. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to test different arrangements of trees in the Eucalyptus-Marandu palisade grass silvopastoral system and to evaluate its performance in different regions of Brazil. METHODS A functional-structural plant model was developed to simulate radiation interception by trees and was then coupled to the CROPGRO-Perennial Forage model to simulate the production of forage biomass. Considering solar radiation as the main resource under competition, water interactions that occur under-ground between Eucalyptus and Maranu palisade grass were not considered. The models were calibrated with experimental data collected in silvopastoral systems in Brazil. The silvopastoral systems were selected according to a combination of tree row spacing (15, 30, and 45 m), two row orientations (north-south and east-west), and single or triple rows. Simulations were replicated for different tree ages (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 years) representing different levels of shading. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Our simulations show that the tree arrangement has a significant effect on the incidence of radiation on the pasture, resulting in different levels of forage production. Row spacing of 30 and 45 m is suitable for providing forage for the animals for several years. In contrast, tree arrangements with a row spacing of 15 m or triple lines demand more careful planning and management, taking into account the soil and climatic characteristics of each region. Lower declines in the forage production were observed in arrangements of 45 m, varying from 1000 and 3000 kg ha−1 after 6 years of system establishment. In this period, the annual production level was lower than 14,000 kg ha−1 for arrangments with row spacing of 15 and 30 m, being recommend pruning and thinning practices aiming to increase the radiation incidence within the system. SIGNIFICANCE The approach used in this study can be extended to other combinations of species and environments to aid the planning and management of this kind of system.

Os animais e plantas vivos podem ser avaliados através do valor justo sem mercado ativo e isso vem sendo debatido através de vários estudos devido a uma preocupação com a subjetividade que está associada a esse método de mensuração. No caso da cana-de-açúcar em desenvolvimento, ativo biológico importante no cenário brasileiro, é utilizado esse método. Considerando os inputs utilizados para a mensuração a valor justo sem mercado ativo da cana, essa pesquisa se propôs a avaliar a fonte de informação da produtividade, que é um dos fatores necessários para a construção do fluxo de caixa da cana. A produtividade pode ser determinada por meio de diferentes métodos, e a literatura indica que há a possibilidade de determinar por meio de média de safras passadas (método tradicional) ou por meio do modelo de processos biofísicos SAMUCA (modelo futuro). Essa pesquisa tem como objetivo comparar a representação fidedigna do valor justo a partir dos inputs de produtividade da cana-de-açúcar gerados pelos modelos tradicional e futuro. Como amostra, os dados de duas usinas foram utilizados, considerando cada talhão como uma unidade de cálculo do valor justo, sendo observados por safra 44 talhões da Usina A e 83 talhões da Usina B. Para cada talhão, houve uma estimativa de cada modelo, que foi comparado com o modelo base, sendo este o efetivamente realizado pelas usinas, já que foram utilizados dados de safras que já aconteceram. Dessa forma, foram utilizados testes de comparação entre grupos, mais especificamente teste de Friedman e Anova de medidas repetidas, como também testes de comparação entre pares (Teste de Durbin-Conover ou de Tukey) quando necessário, para avaliar os modelos em relação ao modelo base. Os resultados demonstraram que os modelos tradicional e futuro demonstram desempenhos diferentes. Em relação aos indicadores de produtividade (ATR e TCH), tanto o modelo tradicional e futuro apresentaram diferenças significativas quando comparados ao modelo base, sendo que o modelo tradicional apresentou mais diferenças (68,75%) do que o modelo futuro (37,5%). Ou seja, existem evidências de que o modelo futuro tem uma performance melhor do que o modelo tradicional no caso dos indicadores de produtividade. No entanto, no caso do valor justo o modelo tradicional apresentou um desempenho superior do que o modelo futuro, devido uma maior quantidade de semelhanças encontradas entre as safras ao confrontar com o modelo base, assim, o modelo tradicional aponta para uma maior representação fidedigna do que o modelo futuro. Esses resultados demonstram que ainda há espaço para avançar no que diz respeito a mensuração do valor justo de ativos biológicos, principalmente, por meio dos modelos agrometeorológicos. Live animals and plants can be valued at fair value without an active market and this has been debated across several studies due to a concern with the subjectivity that is associated with this measurement method. In the case of sugarcane under development, an important biological asset in the Brazilian scenario, this method is used. Considering the inputs used to measure the sugarcane\'s fair value without an active market, this research aimed to evaluate the source of productivity information, which is one of the necessary factors for building the sugarcane cash flow. Productivity can be determined using different methods, and the literature indicates that there is the possibility of determining it using the average of past harvests (traditional method) or using the SAMUCA biophysical process model (future model). This research aims to compare the faithful representation of fair value from the sugarcane productivity inputs generated by the traditional and future models. As a sample, data from two plants were used, considering each plot as a fair value calculation unit, with 44 plots from Plant A and 83 plots from Plant B being observed per season. For each plot, there was an estimate of each model, which was compared with the base model, which is the one effectively carried out by the mills, since data from harvests that have already taken place were used. Thus, comparison tests between groups were used, more specifically the Friedman test and Anova for repeated measures, as well as comparison tests between pairs (Durbin-Conover or Tukey test) when necessary, to evaluate the models in relation to the model base. The results showed that the traditional and future models demonstrate different performances. Regarding productivity indicators (ATR and TCH), both the traditional and future model showed significant differences when compared to the base model, with the traditional model showing more differences (68.75%) than the future model (37.5 %). That is, there is evidence that the future model performs better than the traditional model in the case of productivity indicators. However, in the case of fair value, the traditional model performed better than the future model, due to the greater number of similarities found between the vintages when compared with the base model, thus, the traditional model points to a greater faithful representation of the than the future model. These results demonstrate that there is still room to advance with regard to measuring the fair value of biological assets, mainly through agrometeorological models.

Acknowledged as one of the main crops with a major social and economic importance for most human communities worldwide, maize (Zea mays) production sustainability, i.e., without dangerously depleting agricultural natural resources, is evaluated as concern in a foreseen future where world population will surpass 9 billion people by 2050. In face of such scenarios, Brazil stands itself both by the higher potential of agriculture expansion and also to be amongst the largest maize cropland areas on Earth. Additionally, initiatives such as the Global Yield Gap Atlas (GYGA) have conducted studies in more than 50 countries, evaluating how much crop production yields could increase without occupying new areas and efficiently using the available resources. Within the scope of the GYGA project, this study aims to evaluate the current yield gap of maize production in Brazil, and additionally understand whether irrigation will significantly help on closing this gap. Several field experiments were caried in at least 3 maize producing regions of Brazil, with rigorous control of fertilization, pest, weed and diseases, in order to obtain data to calibrate a crop model and deliver reliable information about the full potential of production across different environments. For defining which locations will represent the whole country yield potential (Yp) through simulations, was followed the protocol described by the GYGA project to define weather stations that represent different Homogeneous Climate Zones (CZ) and the buffer areas that are covered. Moreover, an additional protocol was followed in order to determine a different set of locations that can be used to carry irrigation studies for increasing maize production. Estimates has shown that in average, actual maize yields (Ya) in Brazil are 55.4% below the Yp, although an increase on crop production by the same amount could be reached by irrigating 50% of current cropland areas. Government estimations has pointed that irrigated areas will be increased by near 30% of the areas that are cropped nowadays, which will aid the maize production to barely surpass current values. Our findings showed that it is possible to increase irrigation levels in order to reach full potential of maize crops without compromising the available water resources. However, is still required public efforts to maximize the efficient utilization of water resources by crops, such as investments on scientific programs of genetic adaptation for drought and social assistance to aid farmers on implementing irrigated areas in a sustainable way. The trade-off between increasing production and expanding irrigated areas, must planned to do not affect poor regions where water scarcity already limits the potentiality of agriculture and be focused on locations where resources are fully available to close the current gap of maize production in Brazil. Results from this study should provide reliable data for decision-makers and new public policies, as such governmental programs aiming to plan the expansion of irrigated areas. Reconhecida como uma das principais culturas de grande importância social e econômica para a maioria das comunidades humanas ao redor do planeta, a produção sustentável da cultura do milho (Zea mays), (ou seja, sem esgotar perigosamente os recursos naturais agrícolas), é vista de forma preocupante em um possível futuro onde a população mundial ultrapassará 9 bilhões de pessoas até 2050. Diante desse cenário, o Brasil se destaca tanto pelo seu grande potencial de expansão da agricultura quanto por estar entre as maiores áreas de cultivo de milho do mundo. Além disso, iniciativas como o Global Yield Gap Atlas (GYGA) realizaram estudos em mais de 50 países, avaliando o quanto a produtividade dos cultivos agrícolas poderiam aumentar sem ocupar novas áreas e usar com eficiência os recursos disponíveis. Dentro do escopo do projeto GYGA, este estudo visa avaliar a atual lacuna de produtividade da cultura do milho no Brasil e, adicionalmente, entender se a irrigação ajudará significativamente a fechar essa lacuna. Experimentos de campo foram realizados em pelo menos 3 regiões produtoras de milho do Brasil, com controle rigoroso de adubação, pragas, plantas daninhas e doenças, a fim de obter dados para calibrar um modelo de cultura e fornecer informações confiáveis sobre todo o potencial de produção em diferentes ambientes. Para definir quais locais representarão todo o potencial de produção (Yp) do país através de simulações, foi seguido o protocolo descrito pelo projeto GYGA para definir estações meteorológicas que representam diferentes Zonas Climáticas Homogêneas (CZ) e as áreas de que são abrangidas por estas estações. Além disso, um protocolo adicional foi adaptado para determinar um conjunto diferente de locais que foram utilizados para realizar um estudo do aumento da capacidade produtiva do milho através da irrigação. As estimativas mostram que, em média, as produtividades reais de milho (Ya) no Brasil estão 55,4% abaixo do Yp, embora um aumento na produção agrícola na mesma quantidade possa ser alcançado irrigando 50% das áreas de cultivo atuais. Estimativas do governo apontam que as áreas irrigadas irão crescer em cerca de 30% até 2030, o que fará com que a produção de milho mal supere os valores atuais. Nossos resultados mostraram que é possível aumentar os níveis de irrigação para atingir todo o potencial das culturas de milho sem comprometer os recursos hídricos disponíveis. No entanto, ainda são necessários esforços do poder público para maximizar a utilização eficiente dos recursos hídricos pelas lavouras, como investimentos em programas científicos de adaptação genética à seca e assistência social para auxiliar os agricultores na implantação de áreas irrigadas de forma sustentável. O trade-off entre aumentar a produção e expandir as áreas irrigadas, deve ser planejado para não afetar regiões pobres onde a escassez de água já limita a potencialidade da agricultura e ser focado em locais onde os recursos estão totalmente disponíveis para fechar a atual lacuna de produção de milho no Brasil. Os resultados deste estudo devem fornecer dados confiáveis para tomadores de decisão e na construção de novas políticas públicas, como no planejamento de programas governamentais que visam a expansão de áreas irrigadas.

Sugarcane is an important feedstock of sugar and ethanol. Thus, strategies to follow the quantity and the availability of sugarcane are essential. Different methods have been developed for yield estimation and the use of process-based crop models (PBM) with data assimilation (DA) stands out. Due to the capability of using two different sources of information, and their respective uncertainty for crop yield estimation. However, inconsistencies between PBM and the assimilated data were reported in the literature, which led to systematic errors and low performance of the simulations. Such limitation was connected to the absence or poor calibration of PBMs and to the simplification of the PBMs structure to represent crop development traits. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of using one sugarcane cultivar-based calibration on other cultivars with DA methods and compare this source of uncertainties with others. Moreover, evaluate how the difference between two PBM, regarding their structure of specific sugarcane traits, affects the performance of DA methods. For that, firstly, the DSSAT/SAMUCA (DS) was used to simulate 22 field experiments and quantify the impact of using one cultivar specific calibration (cv. RB867515) compared to four non-calibrated cultivars (cv. NCo376, SP832847, R570, RB72454), on stalk fresh yield (SFY) predictions. This was performed for three different DA methods, Ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), Ensemble smoother (ES), and Weighted mean (WM) to assimilate leaf area index (LAI) retrieved from field observation and compared to the PBM simulation without DA (Open-Loop, OP). Moreover, we analyzed the influence of the timing and amount of LAI data, to compare with the impact of calibration. Second, two different PBM, in terms of structure, one more detailed in terms of structure (DS) and other more general (WOFOST, WO), were compared to the performance of simulate SFY with the use of EnKF and LAI. The LAI was retrieved from Landsat 7 ETM+ and 8 OLI, from fields of a sugarmill database. Thus, the simulations with the EnKF of these fields were compared to the OP simulations. The results showed that the use of a genotype-specific calibration had substantially higher accuracy compared to non-calibrated, for the three DA methods. The simulation of non-calibrated cultivar experiments had a higher accuracy increase, for EnkF and ES, however, WM had opposite results. In this regard, the accuracy of the simulations with DA had a high correlation OP simulations accuracy, which was higher than the correlation with the number of LAI observations assimilated. Furthermore, our results indicated that the calibration performance and the structure of the PBMs influenced the OP simulations, with DS showing higher performance, compared to WO. However, with DA the performance was limited by the inconsistency between Landsat LAI and the LAI simulated by the PBMs, despite the improvements. Thus, assimilated Landsat LAI had the potential to improve yield estimation, but the better descriptions of DS did not inhibit the error inconsistency. Therefore, this study emphasized that the use of DA required previously calibrated PBMs regarding cultivar traits to ensure a higher performance. In addition, more detailed PBMs in terms of process description can benefit from their detailed description to improve the performance of OP simulations and consequently with DA. A cana-de-açúcar é uma importante matéria-prima para produção de açúcar e etanol, portanto, estratégias para acompanhar a quantidade e a disponibilidade de cana-de-açúcar são essenciais. Diferentes métodos têm sido desenvolvidos para estimativa de produtividade, destacando-se o uso de modelos de cultura baseados em processos (MBP) junto à assimilação de dados (AD). Pois esses métodos juntos usam duas fontes diferentes de informação, e suas respectivas incertezas para a estimativa de produtividade. Entretanto, inconsistências entre o MBP e os dados assimilados foram relatadas na literatura, o que leva a erros sistemáticos e baixo desempenho das simulações. Essa limitação está estritamente ligada à ausência ou má calibração do MBP e às simplificações dos processos do MBP em representar as características de desenvolvimento da cultura. Portanto, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o impacto do uso de uma calibração especifica para um cultivar de cana-de-açúcar em outras cultivares, utilizando três métodos de AD e comparar essa fonte de incertezas com outras. Ademais, avaliar como a diferença entre dois MBP, em relação às estruturas e descrições das características específicas da cana-de-açúcar, afetam o desempenho dos métodos de AD. Para isso, primeiramente, com o DSSAT/SAMUCA (DS) foram simulados 22 experimentos de campo, para quantificar o impacto do uso dos parâmetros calibrados para cultivar (cv. RB867515) nas simulações de experimentos com cultivares não calibradas (cv. NCo376 , SP832847, R570, RB72454), para estimar peso de colmo fresco (PCF). Isso foi realizado para três métodos diferentes de AD, Ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), Ensemble smoother (ES), e Weighted mean (WM) para assimilar o índice de área foliar (IAF) obtido diretamente do campo e comparado com a simulação sem AD (Open-loop, OP). Além disso, analisamos a influência do momento e da quantidade de dados de IAF, para comparar com o impacto da calibração. Em segundo lugar, dois MBP diferentes, em termos de estrutura, um mais detalhado para descrever características da cana-de-açúcar (DS) e outro mais generalista (WOFOST, WO), foram comparados para acessar o desempenho de simular PCF com o uso de EnKF assimilando IAF. O IAF foi obtido dos sensores Landsat 7 ETM+ e 8 OLI, de talhões de um banco de dados de uma usina de açúcar. Portanto, as simulações com o EnKF desses talhões foram comparadas com as simulações OP. Os resultados mostraram que o uso de uma calibração específica de genótipo teve acurácia substancialmente maior em comparação com as não calibradas. A simulação de experimentos com as cultivares não calibradas apresentou um aumento de acurácia maior, para EnkF e ES, porém, o WM teve resultados opostos. Portanto, a acurácia das simulações com AD apresentou uma alta correlação com a acurácia das simulações OP, sendo essa correlação superior a influência do número de observações de IAF assimilados. Nesse sentido, nossos resultados indicaram que o desempenho das calibrações e a estrutura dos MBPs influenciaram as simulações de OP, com DS apresentando desempenho superior ao WO. No entanto, com o AD o desempenho foi limitado pela inconsistência entre o IAF do Landsat e o IAF simulado pelos MBPs, apesar do aumento de acurácia e precisão. Com isso, assimilar IAF obtido pelo Landsat apresentou potencial devido a melhora de estimativa de PCF, entretanto, a melhor descrição dos processos do DS não conseguiu inibir a inconsistência entre o MBP e o IAF assimilado. Portanto, este estudo ressalta que para a utilização da AD, os MBP devem ser previamente calibrados, seguindo as características das cultivares, para garantir um melhor desempenho. Ademais, os MBPs mais específicos podem se beneficiar de sua descrição detalhada para melhorar o desempenho das simulações de OP e consequentemente com AD.

An accurate estimation of crop yield under climate change scenarios is essential to quantify our ability to feed a growing population and develop agronomic adaptations to meet future food demand. A coordinated evaluation of yield simulations from process-based eco-physiological models for climate change impact assessment is still missing for soybean, the most widely grown grain legume and the main source of protein in our food chain. In this first soybean multi-model study, we used ten prominent models capable of simulating soybean yield under varying temperature and atmospheric CO2 concentration [CO2] to quantify the uncertainty in soybean yield simulations in response to these factors. Models were first parametrized with high quality measured data from five contrasting environments. We found considerable variability among models in simulated yield responses to increasing temperature and [CO2]. For example, under a + 3 °C temperature rise in our coolest location in Argentina, some models simulated that yield would reduce as much as 24%, while others simulated yield increases up to 29%. In our warmest location in Brazil, the models simulated a yield reduction ranging from a 38% decrease under + 3 °C temperature rise to no effect on yield. Similarly, when increasing [CO2] from 360 to 540 ppm, the models simulated a yield increase that ranged from 6% to 31%. Model calibration did not reduce variability across models but had an unexpected effect on modifying yield responses to temperature for some of the models. The high uncertainty in model responses indicates the limited applicability of individual models for climate change food projections. However, the ensemble mean of simulations across models was an effective tool to reduce the high uncertainty in soybean yield simulations associated with individual models and their parametrization. Ensemble, ensemble mean yield responses to temperature and [CO2] were similar to those reported from the literature. Our study is the first demonstration of the benefits achieved from using an ensemble of grain legume models for climate change food projections, and highlights that further soybean model development with experiments under elevated [CO2] and temperature is needed to reduce the uncertainty from the individual models.
