Abstract

Argentina stands as the leading producer and exporter of olive products in the Americas, with the province of La Rioja as its main productive area. Since the 1990s, the olive grove cultivated area and related agro-industry in La Rioja have expanded. However, the resulting wastewater has generally been neglected. The water footprint (WF) provides information about the water volume consumed and polluted by a production process. Since the 1990s, agricultural and agro-industrial activities in La Rioja have experienced substantial growth. This study aims to analyze the generation, quality, and management of Oil Mill Wastewater (OMWW) using the grey WF of chloride and nitrate as an indicator and focusing on two olive mills (OM) in La Rioja. Additionally, it seeks to examine the relationship between the international trade of provincial olive oil and the estimated grey WF. For the diagnosis of OMWW generation, a description of the production process was made coupled with flow and physico-chemical characterization. The total grey WF was 8.69 and 45.5 L water/L olive oil for OM 1 and OM 2, respectively. Nitrate was identified as the critical pollutant. The grey virtual water export related to the export of olive oil was 5569 m3 for OM 1 and 28,000 m3 for OM 2. The provincial grey virtual water export related to olive oil was 161,955 m3 with major trade destinations including Spain, the United States, and Brazil. The article analyses for the first time the grey WF of olive oil industries and assess the related grey virtual water exports. This research represents a step forward in the knowledge of wastewater management in the olive oil sector and facilitates the search for solutions to minimize negative environmental impacts while promoting cleaner production.

Abstract

Sea level rise induced flooding is projected to cause significant damage to the low-lying coastal areas of many countries around the planet. Many households located in vulnerable areas have already started to adapt to flooding, although some empirical studies indicate that informal adaptation is reaching its limit and that more formal countermeasures by governments will be necessary to cope with the increased flood risks. In such cases, public support for flood adaptation policy is crucial to ensure a successful and timely adaptation, as these strategies can directly affect coastal residents. However, there is limited understanding on the mechanisms and factors that determine public support for flood adaptation policy. Thus, this study proposes a new model – the Foundation of Adaptation Policy Support (FAPS) – which integrates the Protection Motivation Theory and the Risk Information Seeking and Processing models. FAPS was tested using structural equation modelling with latent variables and data that was collected from a household questionnaire survey conducted in the Tokyo lowland areas (n = 388), with the super levee representing a policy that could be applied to sea level rise adaptation. The proposed FAPS model showed a good fit with the collected data, indicating that the strongest predictors of policy support include the perceived effectiveness of the policy and the importance of the issue of flooding to individuals. Other important predictors of policy support include knowledge about flooding, the opinions of surrounding people (i.e. family and friends), and the systematic processing by respondents of information related to floods. The FAPS model sets the foundation for understanding the mechanisms of public support for adaptation policy and provides new insights into designing and planning such policies in practice. Key policy insights Perceived policy effectiveness and the importance of addressing floods are the strongest predictors of public support for adaptation policy. Increasing people's knowledge about flooding is essential to communicate the importance of adaptation policy. Abstract

Las excelentes condiciones de conservación del altar del siglo VII a.C., encontrado en 1997 en el santuario proto histórico de Caura (Cerro de San Juan, Coria del Río, Sevilla), aconsejaron su extracción en bloque para su exposición en el Museo Arqueológico de Sevilla. No obstante, previamente a su puesta en valor, desde el Instituto Andaluz del Patrimonio Histórico de la Junta de Andalucía se procedió a la restauración del ara. Para aliviar su peso se llevó a cabo un vaciado par cial de la pieza mediante un proceso de microexcavación de la misma. El material obtenido por este procedimiento fue so metido a análisis geológicos, arqueobotánicos y arqueozoológicos, con el objeto tanto de determinar el origen, la naturale za y la disposición de los materiales de construcción de la pieza ritual, como de interpretar su entorno natural, ayudando así a clarificar los planteamientos realizados inicialmente por arqueólogos e historiadores. Los resultados de los distintos análisis coinciden en el uso de sustratos limpios para la construcción del altar, corroborando la hipótesis histórica de par tida y proporcionando información paleoambiental., The excellent state of conservation of the altar from the 7th century BC, found in 1997 in the protohistoric sanctu ary of Caura (Cerro de San Juan, Coria del Río, Seville), advised its complete extraction for its exhibition in the Museo Arque ológico de Sevilla. However, prior to its enhancement, the Instituto Andaluz del Patrimonio Histórico of the Junta de Anda lucía carried out the restoration of this altar. To reduce its weight, a partial emptying of the piece was carried out through a micro-excavation process. The material obtained by this procedure was subjected to geological, archaeobotanical and arche ozoological analysis. The aim of all of them is determining the origin, nature, and disposition of the construction materials of the ritual piece and interpreting its natural environment. Thus, helping to clarify the approaches initially made by archae ologists and historians. The results of the different analyzes coincide in the use of clean substrates for the construction of the altar, corroborating the initial historical hypothesis and providing paleoenvironmental information.

El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar los actores sociales que se relacionan desde el enfoque del Nexo Agua, Energía y Alimentación en el Valle Antinaco – Los Colorados (VALC) y, a partir de allí, proponer grupos objetivos sobre los que avanzar para articular territorialmente el enfoque. Los pasos metodológicos consistieron en la elaboración del sociograma de manera participativa, allí se identificaron los actores y sus relaciones, se efectuaron ajustes en gabinete y se validaron los resultados en mesas de intercambio. Se identificaron 81 actores, 255 vinculaciones y se propusieron cuatro grupos objetivo, conformados por conjuntos diversos de actores, a los que sería conveniente comunicar, invitar e involucrar a participar del enfoque en el VALC.

Abstract

Teratoma, due to its remarkable ability to differentiate into multiple cell lineages, is a valuable model for studying human embryonic development. The similarity of the gene expression and chromatin accessibility patterns in these cells to those observed in vivo further underscores its potential as a research tool. Notably, teratomas derived from human naïve (pre-implantation epiblast-like) pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) have larger embryonic cell diversity and contain extraembryonic lineages, making them more suitable to study developmental processes. However, the cell type-specific epigenetic profiles of naïve PSC teratomas have not been yet characterized. Using single-cell assay for transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing (scATAC-seq), we analyzed 66,384 cell profiles from five teratomas derived from human naïve PSCs and their post-implantation epiblast-like (primed) counterparts. We observed 17 distinct cell types from both embryonic and extraembryonic lineages, resembling the corresponding cell types in human fetal tissues. Additionally, we identified key transcription factors specific to different cell types. Abstract

Hydraulic experiments using a wave flume with a wind tunnel at a scale of 1/40 were carried out to investigate the effect of wind on wave overtopping of a vertical seawall. To ascertain the possible effects of wave breaking, incident waves with various wave steepness (0.0102 to 0.0371) and three kinds of wind forcing (0 m/s, 6.84 m/s, 10.04 m/s) were used. The authors found that winds significantly increased the overtopping rate in general, and that there is a clear relationship between the overtopping rate and the wave steepness. Velocity fields obtained from PIV analysis revealed that the onshore winds directly enhanced the transport of overtopping water mass. The influence of the wind on the wave hydrodynamic processes that indirectly have an effect on the overtopping rate (such as the formation of a partially standing wave, breaker location, and breaker type) is also discussed. The perspective of treating wave overtopping as a transport of water mass could provide a novel understanding of complex fluid behavior, which would help to formulate countermeasures against future disasters influenced by intensive wind forcing. 47. Sustentabilidad de la explotación de agua subterránea en la Cuenca Guanchín–Sañogasta, Chilecito, La Rioja

Abstract

En la cuenca de Guanchín–Sañogasta se ha desarrollado desde el año 2014 un importante avance de la producción agrícola que utiliza de manera exclusiva agua subterránea para riego. Debido a que la descarga de la cuenca se concentra en el manantial “El bosquecillo” y en dos galerías filtrantes que abastecen de agua potable y riego a la localidad de Nonogasta surge el interrogante sobre la sustentabilidad del sistema. El objetivo es analizar la sostenibilidad de la explotación de la cuenca Guanchín–Sañogasta a partir de las potenciales implicancias en el medio físico natural (hidrológico-hidrogeológico). Se efectuó el análisis de datos de precipitación y estimación de recarga, descarga de la cuenca y su relación con la recarga, variación en la piezometría y estimación de la explotación de agua subterránea. Los resultados indican que un 60 % de la recarga se extrae para riego con descenso en la piezometría y disminución progresiva del caudal del manantial “El bosquecillo”. No obstante, los pozos actualmente construidos tienen la capacidad de extraer caudales muy por encima de los valores de recarga de la cuenca. Por lo tanto, la sustentabilidad del agua subterránea se encuentra afectada negativamente ante las consecuencias de la explotación intensiva. Es fundamental continuar con el registro de datos meteorológicos, hidrológicos e hidrogeológicos para fortalecer la hipótesis de que las alteraciones advertidas se deben principalmente a la extracción de agua subterránea y en menor medida a un proceso de variabilidad en las precipitaciones. Abstract In the Guanchín-Sañogasta basin, an important advance in agricultural production has been made since 2013 that exclusively uses groundwater for irrigation. Because the discharge from the basin is concentrated in the “El Bosquecillo” spring and in two filtering galleries that supply drinking water and irrigation in Nonogasta town, the question arises about the sustainability of the system. The objective of this study is to analyze the sustainability of the exploitation of the Guanchín-Sañogasta basin for the potential implications in the natural physical environment (hydrological-hydrogeological). We carried out data analysis of precipitation and estimation of recharge, basin discharge, and its relationship with recharge, variation in piezometry and estimation of groundwater exploitation. The results indicate that 60% of the recharge is extracted for irrigation with a decrease in piezometry and a progressive decrease in the flow of "El bosquecillo" spring. However, the existing wells are able to extract a groundwater volume above the recharge values. Therefore, the sustainability of groundwater is negatively affected by the consequences of the intensive exploitation. Thus, the collection of meteorological, hydrological, and hydrogeological data is essential to strengthen the hypothesis that the observed alterations are mainly due to the extraction of groundwater and to a lesser extent to a process of variability in rainfall.

Abstract

Corrosion inhibitors can trigger health and/or environmental problems due to their toxicity. For this reason, it has been suggested to use plant extracts as natural corrosion inhibitors, because they represent a rich source of chemical compounds, they are non-toxic, biodegradable and abundant in nature. Sorghum halepense is a herbaceous weed, commonly known as johnson grass, belongs to the family gramíneae or poaceae, the choice of this plant is due to its zero cost and easy availability. In this systematic review, were used keywords such as Sorghum halepense johnson grass, phytochemistry, phytotherapy, phytoremediation, antidiabetic, antioxidant, cytotoxicity, antifungal, antimicrobial, anticancer, biological activity, medical activity, allelochemicals, among others. To do this, were used databases such as Scielo, Dialnet, Redalyc, Google Scholar, DOAJ, Wiley online library, BioOne, EBSCOHost, Knovel, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink y VirtualPro. Previous studies on this weed have reported its therapeutic potential against cancer, diabetes, prostatitis, hepatoprotective activity, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, as well as abortifacient and placental delivery in veterinary medicine. In view of the numerous organic molecules present in this plant, this study proposes Sorghum halepense as a potential natural corrosion inhibitor.
