A community sample (n = 118) of parents of children on the spectrum completed questionnaires on their child's autism characteristics and severity and impact of their child's anxiety, their own anxiety and family accommodation behaviours. Family accommodation was associated with the impact of child anxiety, over and above anxiety severity of the child and parent. Findings support the involvement of parents in psychosocial support for children on the autism spectrum experiencing anxiety.

Previously documented global trends in autism research funding have been skewed towards biology research, which is at odds with the priorities expressed by autistic and autism community members. We aimed to document the areas of autism research that have previously been funded in Aotearoa New Zealand, and to explore the views of the autistic and autism communities on this funding distribution. We searched for research grants awarded to autism research in Aotearoa New Zealand between 2007 and 2021. We categorised the funding for autism research to enable comparison to that previously documented in other countries. We elicited the views of the autistic and autism communities in relation to the funded autism research, through an online survey and a series of focus groups. The largest proportion of money and number of grants was awarded to biological research. Community members expressed dissatisfaction with this pattern of funding, and noted that it does not address the needs and priorities of the autistic community. Community members suggested that the funding pattern indicated a lack of autistic consultation and engagement in research design and funding allocation. The priorities of the autistic and autism communities need to be considered by researchers and funders alike. We discuss how autistic inclusion in research can be supported through decision-making regarding funding and ethics relating to autism research.

Concerns about the role of technology and the quality of student writing in higher education are not new. Historically, writing scholars have been at the forefront of initiatives that scrutinise and integrate new technologies in higher education. This article contends that writing scholars are again uniquely equipped to assist students, teachers in all disciplines, and institutions of higher education in navigating the challenges created by the public availability of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Adopting a dialogical approach, the article brings together six scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds within the broad umbrella of writing studies. Through the lens of writing scholarship, this chorus of critical voices illuminates the important questions posed by, and possible responses to, AI in higher education. Although AI complicates key issues in higher education such as academic integrity, assessment, and authorship, writing scholarship provides an essential framework for educators to respond to these challenges. Collectively, these scholars map the history of writing scholars' responses to technological change in higher education and suggest how writing scholars can contribute to the debates and discussions concerning the impact of AI on higher education. Whilst both mindfulness and adult attachment have been linked to wellbeing, little is known about how these constructs relate to emotion regulation that can underpin wellbeing. The present study examined the association between adult attachment orientation and emotion regulation (strategies and difficulties) and the mediating role of facets of dispositional mindfulness. A sample of 301 university students (Mage = 23.08, SD = 8.08; 74.75% female) completed measures of adult attachment, emotion regulation, difficulties in emotion regulation, and dispositional mindfulness. Parallel multiple mediation analyses indicated that the act with awareness and non-judging facets of mindfulness repeatedly emerged as significant mediators in the positive associations between the dimensions of attachment insecurity (anxiety, avoidance, and disorganized) and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies and difficulties in emotion regulation. Those individuals exhibiting greater attachment insecurity employ maladaptive emotion regulation strategies and display difficulties in emotion regulation via mindfulness deficits. The present findings extend our current understanding of the role of dispositional mindfulness in the associations between adult attachment orientation and varying aspects of the emotion regulation process. Background: Recruitment of cancer clinical trial (CCT) participants, especially participants representing the diversity of the US population, is necessary to create successful medications and a continual challenge. These challenges are amplified in Phase I cancer trials that focus on evaluating the safety of new treatments and are the gateway to treatment development. In preparation for recruitment to a Phase I recurrent head and neck cancer (HNC) trial, we assessed perceived barriers to participation or referral and suggestions for recruitment among people with HNC and community physicians (oncologist, otolaryngologist or surgeon). Methods: Between December 2020 and February 2022, we conducted a qualitative needs assessment via semistructured interviews with a race and ethnicity‐stratified sample of people with HNC (n = 30: 12 non‐Hispanic White, 9 non‐Hispanic African American, 8 Hispanic and 1 non‐Hispanic Pacific Islander) and community physicians (n = 16) within the University of Florida Health Cancer Center catchment area. Interviews were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis approach to describe perspectives and identify relevant themes. Results: People with HNC reported thematic barriers included: concerns about side effects, safety and efficacy; lack of knowledge and systemic and environmental obstacles. Physicians identified thematic barriers of limited physician knowledge; clinic and physician barriers and structural barriers. People with HNC and physicians recommended themes included: improved patient education, dissemination of trial information and interpersonal communication between community physicians and CCT staff. Conclusions: The themes identified by people with HNC and community physicians are consistent with research efforts and recommendations on how to increase the participation of people from minoritized populations in CCTs. This community needs assessment provides direction on the selection of strategies to increase CCT participation and referral. Patient or Public Contribution: This study focused on people with HNC and community physicians' lived experience and their interpretations of how they would consider a future Phase I clinical trial. In addition to our qualitative data reflecting community voices, a community member reviewed the draft interview guide before data collection and both people with HNC and physicians aided interpretation of the findings. We asked people from the autistic community and broader autism community whether they were satisfied with this funding pattern, and whether it aligned with what is important to them and to autistic people. We found that the majority of funding for autism research was awarded to biology research (67%). Members of the autistic and autism communities were dissatisfied with the funding distribution, and expressed a lack of alignment with what is important to them. People from the community indicated that the funding distribution did not address the priorities of autistic people, and that it indicated a lack of engagement with autistic people. Autism research funding needs to reflect the priorities of the autistic and autism communities. Autistic people need to be included in autism research and related funding decisions. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the experience of obsessional intrusive thoughts (OITs) in a sample of children aged 8 to 10 years old and to test the main tenets of the cognitive model of OCD. Specifically, we assessed: (1) the prevalence of OITs experienced by young children; (2) their frequency and content; (3) the emotions they evoke; (4) the reasons why they are upsetting; (5) how they are appraised (6) and what control strategies they use. Methods: Forty‐nine children (28 girls, 21 boys; mean age 9.1 years) from the community completed two self‐report questionnaires assessing anxiety and obsessive–compulsive symptoms. Children were interviewed using the Children's Anxious Thoughts Interview, which assessed their experiences of OITs. Results: From the 49 participants, 71.43% reported having experienced at least one OIT. The most frequent contents related to harm and doubt. Of the total sample, 28.6% reported having experienced one OIT recently with at least moderate frequency; these participants reported higher anxiety and obsessive–compulsive interference, described feeling nervous and anxious when experiencing their OIT, and rated their OIT as highly important and distracting. The most frequently reported control strategies were cognitive – suppression, distraction and thought replacement. Conclusions: Almost two thirds of community children reported experiencing OITs. The findings from this study provide preliminary support for the application of the cognitive model of OCD in children. Subtle differences from previous research with adults are discussed. Background: Previous studies of community priorities for autism research have been limited by low representation of autistic people and thus a bias toward the views of families and professionals. We aimed to determine the first community-led priorities for autism research in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ)., Methods: Autistic people were essential partners in the project, from inception and design through to methods and outputs. We gathered the views of the autistic and autism communities (including family, practitioners, and researchers) through focus groups ( n  = 55) and an online survey ( n  = 450). Almost 40% of the survey respondents indicated that they were autistic., Results: The findings across the focus groups and survey highlighted the importance of research that centralizes the experiences and needs of autistic people, particularly of autistic New Zealanders, including culturally specific research for Māori and Pacific peoples. All five priority topics for autistic adults were also priorities for at least one other group: (1) Health, mental health, and well-being of autistic people (all groups); (2) Services across the life span (autistic adults, health care/disability, and education practitioners); (3) Needs of autistic people in Aotearoa NZ (autistic adults, whānau); (4) Perspectives from autistic people with a diverse range of support needs (autistic adults; education practitioners); (5) Quality of life of autistic people in Aotearoa NZ (autistic adults; health care/disability practitioners)., Conclusions: We discuss the advantages of autistic involvement in research, and how these community priorities can inform future research and policy in NZ., (Copyright 2023, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.)

Importance: This study delves into the previously unexplored territory of extracellular vesicle (EV) cargo and composition, specifically focusing on lipid composition changes in EVs following Salmonella infection. EVs play crucial roles in intercellular communication, carrying a variety of biomolecules. Investigating how these EV cargo lipids change post-infection with Salmonella is significant for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying lipid trafficking during infection. Given the impact of lipid composition on EV function, this research uncovers distinct differences in the lipid profiles of EVs at different time points post-infection and between infected and uninfected macrophages. This study identified lipids that are differentially abundant in EVs produced by the host during infection, offering novel insights into the dynamics of lipid profiles in EVs during cellular processes and infections. Introduction: Timely access to early support that optimises autistic children's development and their caregiver's mental health is critical. Naturalistic developmental behavioural interventions (NDBIs) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) are evidence-based supports that can enhance child learning and behaviour, and adult well-being, respectively. The traditional face-to-face delivery of these approaches is resource intensive. Further, little is known about the benefit of parallel child-focused and caregiver-focused supports. The aims of this trial are to evaluate the effectiveness and social validity of telehealth-delivered, caregiver-implemented, child-focused NDBI and caregiver-focused ACT when delivered alone and in parallel, on autistic children's social communication and caregiver well-being., Methods and Analysis: The study will use a randomised, single-blind clinical trial with three parallel arms: NDBI; ACT and ACT+NDBI. We will recruit a minimum of 78, 2-5-year-old autistic children and their families throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Support will be delivered over 13 weeks using a combination of culturally enhanced web-based modules and online group coaching. Primary outcome variables include children's social communication/engagement with their caregiver as well as caregiver stress and will be evaluated using a repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance. Outcome variables are assessed at baseline (before randomisation), immediately postparticipation and at 3-month follow-up., Ethics and Dissemination: The trial is approved by the Health and Disability Ethics Committee (2022 FULL 12058). The findings of this trial will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals and national and international conference proceedings regardless of the magnitude/direction of effect.
