Context. Cygnus X-1 (Cyg X-1) is a high-mass X-ray binary where accretion onto the black hole (BH) is mediated by the stellar wind from the blue supergiant companion star HDE 226868. Due to its inclination, the system is a perfect laboratory to study the not yet well-understood stellar wind structure. In fact, depending on the position of the BH along the orbit, X-ray observations can probe different layers of the stellar wind. Deeper wind layers can be investigated at superior conjunction (i.e. null orbital phases). Aims. We aim to characterise the stellar wind in the Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 system, analysing one passage at superior conjunction covered by XMM-Newton during the 'Cyg X-1 Hard state Observations of a Complete Binary Orbit in X-rays' (CHOCBOX) campaign. Methods. To analyse the properties of the stellar wind, we computed colour-colour diagrams. Since X-ray absorption is energy-dependent, colour indices provide information on the parameters of the stellar wind, such as the column density, NH, w, and the covering factor, fc. We fitted colour-colour diagrams with models that include both a continuum and a stellar wind component. We used the kernel density estimation method to infer the unknown probability distribution of the data points in the colour-colour diagram, and selected the model corresponding to the highest likelihood. In order to study the temporal evolution of the wind around superior conjunction, we extracted and fitted time-resolved colour-colour diagrams. Results. We found that the model that best describes the shape of the colour-colour diagram of Cyg X-1 at superior conjunction requires the wind to be partially ionised. The shape of the colour-colour diagram strongly varies during the analysed observation, due to concurrent changes of the mean NH, w and the fc of the wind. Our results suggest the existence of a linear scaling between the rapid variability amplitude of NH, w (on timescales between 10 s and 11 ks) and its long-term variations (on timescales > 11 ks). Using the inferred best-fit values, we estimated the stellar mass loss rate to be ∼7 × 10−6 M⊙ yr−1 and the clumps to have a characteristic mass of ∼1017 g. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Recently, astrometric and spectroscopic surveys of OB stars revealed a few stellar-mass black holes (BHs) with orbital periods of as low as 10 days. Contrary to wind-fed BH high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), no X-ray counterpart was detected, probably because of the absence of a radiatively efficient accretion disc around the BH. Nevertheless, dissipative processes in the hot, dilute, and strongly magnetised plasma around the BH (so-called BH corona) can still lead to non-thermal X-ray emission (e.g. synchrotron). Aims. We determine the X-ray luminosity distribution from BH+OB star binaries up to orbital periods of a few thousand days. Methods. We used detailed binary evolution models computed with MESA for initial primary masses of 10–90 M⊙ and orbital periods of 1–3000 d. We computed the X-ray luminosity for a broad range of radiative efficiencies that depend on the mass accretion rate and flow geometry. Results. For typical conditions around stellar-mass BHs, we show that particle acceleration through magnetic reconnection can heat the BH corona. A substantial fraction of the gravitational potential energy from the accreted plasma is converted into non-thermal X-ray emission. Our population synthesis analysis predicts that at least 28 (up to 72) BH+OB star binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) produce X-ray luminosities of above 1031 erg s−1, which are observable with focused Chandra observations. We identify a population of SB1 systems in the LMC and HD96670 in the Milky Way comprising O stars with unseen companions of masses of above 2.3 M⊙, which aligns well with our predictions and may be interesting sources for follow-up observations. The predicted luminosities of the OB companions to these X-ray-emitting BHs are 104.5 − 5.5L⊙. Conclusions. These findings advocate for prolonged X-ray observations of the stellar-mass black hole candidates identified in the vicinity of OB stars. Such long exposures could reveal the underlying population of X-ray-faint BHs and provide constraints for the evolution from single to double degenerate binaries and identify the progenitors of gravitational wave mergers. Because they lose tremendous amounts of mass, cool evolved stars are major sources of dust and molecules for the interstellar medium. Spectro-imaging of the dust-driven winds around these stars has enabled us to identify recurring nonspherical patterns (e.g. spirals, arcs, compressed wind). We use radiative-hydrodynamic simulations of dust-driven winds to study the imprints left in the wind by an orbiting stellar or sub-stellar companion. We designed 3D numerical setup to solve the wind dynamics beyond the dust condensation radius and follow the flow up to several hundreds of stellar radii. Non-uniform grids enable us to capture small scale features such as shocks or disks forming around the orbiting object. Depending on its mass and orbital parameters, we reproduced typical non-spherical features such as arcs, spirals, petals and orbital density enhancements, and identified patterns associated to eccentric orbits. To decode the information stored within a spectrum, detailed modelling of the physical state is required together with accurate radiative transfer solution schemes. In the analysis of stellar spectra, the numerical model often needs to account for high velocity outflows, multi-dimensional structures, and the effects of binary companions. Focusing now on binary systems, we present the BOSS-3D spectral synthesis code, which is capable of calculating synthetic line profiles for a variety of binary systems. Assuming the state of the circumstellar material to be known, the standard pz -geometry is extended by defining individual coordinate systems for each object. By embedding these coordinate systems within the observer's frame, BOSS-3D automatically accounts for outflows or discs within both involved systems, and includes all Doppler shifts. Moreover, the code accounts for different length-scales, and thus could also be used to analyse transit-spectra of planetary atmospheres. As a first application of BOSS-3D, we model the phase-dependent line profiles for the enigmatic binary (or multiple) system LB-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hot accretion flow around Kerr black holes is strongly magnetized. Magnetic field loops sustained by a surrounding accretion disk can close within the event horizon. We performed particle-in-cell simulations in Kerr metric to capture the dynamics of the electromagnetic field and of the ambient collisionless plasma in this coupled configuration. We find that a hybrid magnetic topology develops with a closed magnetosphere co-existing with open field lines threading the horizon reminiscent of the Blandford-Znajek solution. Further in the disk, highly inclined open magnetic field lines can launch a magnetically-driven wind. While the plasma is essentially force-free, a current sheet forms above the disk where magnetic reconnection produces macroscopic plasmoids and accelerates particles up to relativistic Lorentz factors. A highly dynamic Y-point forms on the furthest closed magnetic field line, with episodic reconnection events responsible for transient synchrotron emission and coronal heating.
