Abstract

Daily and seasonal fluctuations in environmental conditions can significantly impact the survivorship and reproductive success of animals by altering energetic costs and predation risks. Behaviorally, animals often respond to changes in their environment through regulation of acthity and associated movement patterns. We used accelerometer-informed GPS telemetry to assess nightly activity and movement patterns in response to environmental conditions in a small endotherm, the eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius). Nightly movements and activity of skunks were monitored in association with ambient temperature, precipitation, and moon illumination during late winter through summer in Alabama. Eastern spotted skunks were strictly nocturnal, exhibiting almost no daytime activity. Total time active and total distance moved each night increased with ambient temperature and rainfall. Variation in moon illumination, which may affect predation risk, did not impact skunk nightly activity or movement. Eastern spotted skunks likely reduce predation risk by being active between sunset and sunrise when they are less visible to predators. Lower activity and movement at cooler temperatures significantly reduces thermoregulatory costs for small endotherms. Increased activity of skunks during or shortly after precipitation may be driven by increased prey availability. Our findings indicate that small endotherms, like the eastern spotted skunk, rely extensively on behavioral thermoregulation, instead of physiological adaptation, to buffer themselves against changing environmental conditions. Abstract

Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a rapidly evolving technology that has the potential to widely influence research, clinical and recreational use. Non-invasive BCI approaches are particularly common as they can impact a large number of participants safely and at a relatively low cost. Where traditional non-invasive BCIs were used for simple computer cursor tasks, it is now increasingly common for these systems to control robotic devices for complex tasks that may be useful in daily life. In this review, we provide an overview of the general BCI framework as well as the various methods that can be used to record neural activity, extract signals of interest, and decode brain states. In this context, we summarize the current state-of-the-art of non-invasive BCI research, focusing on trends in both the application of BCIs for controlling external devices and algorithm development to optimize their use. 13. End-of-Life Care in Hematology/Oncology Fellowship.

Abstract

Introduction: Aggressive end-of-life (EOL) care for cancer patients can lead to increased hospitalizations and worse quality of death, while goals of care (GOC) discussions including EOL care conversations are associated with fewer hospitalizations and increased hospice use. During hematology–oncology training, fellows should develop communication skills that include eliciting and documenting patients' GOC to provide quality care during EOL. We aimed to determine the frequency of documentation of GOC discussions in fellow's clinics as well as characteristics of EOL care. Methods: This study was conducted at an academic cancer center where year 1–3 fellows retrospectively reviewed patient medical records from July 2016 to June 2017 to identify patient deaths and collect information on hospitalizations, treatment, and place of death to analyze relationships with GOC discussions. Results: Out of 103 patient deaths, 48 (47%) had documented GOC discussions, 69 (67%) patients were enrolled on hospice, and 20 (19%) had an advance directive. GOC discussions were associated with higher hospice enrollment and advance directive documentation and lower hospitalizations. Conclusions: All fellows had at least one patient who died in their patient panels, but less than half of patients had documented GOC discussions. Fellowship programs should consider incorporating quality improvement measures and communication skills training to ensure fellows have competence in GOC communication and EOL care delivery. Abstract

Neuroscientists studying the neural correlates of mouse behavior often lack access to the brain-wide activity patterns elicited during a specific task of interest. Fortunately, large-scale imaging is becoming increasingly accessible thanks to modalities such as Ca2+ imaging and functional ultrasound (fUS). However, these and other techniques often involve challenging cranial window procedures and are difficult to combine with other neuroscience tools. We address this need with an open-source 3D-printable cranial implant—the COMBO (ChrOnic Multimodal imaging and Behavioral Observation) window. The COMBO window enables chronic imaging of large portions of the brain in head-fixed mice while preserving orofacial movements. We validate the COMBO window stability using both brain-wide fUS and multisite two-photon imaging. Moreover, we demonstrate how the COMBO window facilitates the combination of optogenetics, fUS, and electrophysiology in the same animals to study the effects of circuit perturbations at both the brain-wide and single-neuron level. Overall, the COMBO window provides a versatile solution for performing multimodal brain recordings in head-fixed mice. Whole-brain optical imaging approaches are often applied through a cranial window but are limited by their low spatio-temporal resolution. Abstract

Managing wildlife populations in the face of global change requires regular data on the abundance and distribution of wild animals, but acquiring these over appropriate spatial scales in a sustainable way has proven challenging. Here we present the data from Snapshot USA 2020, a second annual national mammal survey of the USA. This project involved 152 scientists setting camera traps in a standardized protocol at 1485 locations across 103 arrays in 43 states for a total of 52,710 trap-nights of survey effort. Most (58) of these arrays were also sampled during the same months (September and October) in 2019, providing a direct comparison of animal populations in 2 years that includes data from both during and before the COVID-19 pandemic. All data were managed by the eMammal system, with all species identifications checked by at least two reviewers. In total, we recorded 117,415 detections of 78 species of wild mammals, 9236 detections of at least 43 species of birds, 15,851 detections of six domestic animals and 23,825 detections of humans or their vehicles. Spatial differences across arrays explained more variation in the relative abundance than temporal variation across years for all 38 species modeled, although there are examples of significant site-level differences among years for many species. Temporal results show how species allocate their time and can be used to study species interactions, including between humans and wildlife. These data provide a snapshot of the mammal community of the USA for 2020 and will be useful for exploring the drivers of spatial and temporal changes in relative abundance and distribution, and the impacts of species interactions on daily activity patterns. Abstract

This article discusses the urban spaces of the pseudo-colonial city via the urban transformation in the eastern area of Bangkok between 1855 and 1932. During this period, the Thai royal government was under pressure from colonialism in the Southeast Asian region. To prevent colonization of the country, the kings aimed to strengthen their economic and political powers through administrative reform, educational development, infrastructure construction, and land commodification Thus, the urban spaces in Bangkok were significantly transformed. The eastern area became a transitional zone between the administrative center of the royal government and the commercial center where foreign traders resided. Furthermore, this transitional zone continued expanding into the area of rural communities, and, consequently, the traditional settlements of the local people gradually lost population. Abstract

Definitive radiation therapy is considered standard therapy for medically inoperable early-stage NSCLC. Nevertheless, for patients with tumors located near structures such as the proximal tracheobronchial tree, esophagus, heart, spinal cord, and brachial plexus, the optimal management regimen is controversial. The objective was to develop expert multidisciplinary consensus guidelines on managing medically inoperable NSCLC located in a central or ultracentral location relative to critical organs at risk.
