Objective: This study was carried out to evaluate the relationship between the nutritional status, anthropometric measurements and dietary inflammatory index (DII) of professional football players exposed to long-term intense exercise. Method: Twenty-one professional male football players with a mean age of 26.00±5.69 years playing in the same club participated in the study. The nutritional status of the football players was evaluated with 3-day food consumption record (2 days of training and 1 match day). DII scores were calculated using data on 34 nutrient/nutritional ingredients obtained from the food consumption records. Body fat percentage in the anthropometric evaluations were determined by caliper and skinfold thicknesses. Results: The median DII scores of the football players were found as – 3.42 (-9.95 – 0.95), and their nutritional intake were found to be antiinflammatory. When the relationship between the DII scores of the football players and their anthropometric measurements was examined, a positive and significant correlation (R: .476; p: .029) was found between their DII score and their abdominal adiposity. However, there was no significant correlation (p> .05) between the DII scores and the other anthropometric measurements. In addition, there was a significant negative correlation (R: – .468; p: .032) between fiber consumption and abdominal adiposity, and a significant positive correlation between carbohydrate and fat consumption and body weight (respectively R= .730 p= .000; R= .526 p= .014). Conclusion: It has been revealed that the football players participating in our study generally have an anti-inflammatory diet. It was also found that abdominal adiposity was higher in the football players with high DII scores.

The effects of fat intake from different dietary sources on bladder cancer (BC) risk remains unidentified. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between fat intakes and BC risk by merging world data on this topic. Data from 11 cohort studies in the BLadder cancer Epidemiology and Nutritional Determinants (BLEND) study, provided sufficient information on fat intake for a total of 2731 BC cases and 544 452 noncases, which yielded 5 400 168 person-years of follow-up. Hazard ratios (HRs), with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs), were estimated using Cox-regression models stratified on cohort. Analyses were adjusted for total energy intake in kilocalories, gender, smoking status (model-1) and additionally for sugar and sugar products, beers, wine, dressing and plant-based and fruits intakes (model-2). Among women, an inverse association was observed between mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and BC risk (HR comparing the highest with the lowest tertile: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.58-0.93, P-trend = .01). Overall, this preventative effect of MUFAs on BC risk was only observed for the nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) subtype (HR: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.53-0.91, P-trend = .004). Among men, a higher intake of total cholesterol was associated with an increased BC risk (HR: 1.37, 95% CI: 1.16-1.61, P-trend = .01). No other significant associations were observed. This large prospective study adds new insights into the role of fat and oils in BC carcinogenesis, showing an inverse association between consumption of MUFAs and the development of BC among women and a direct association between higher intakes of dietary cholesterol and BC risk among men.Funding information: This work was partly funded by the World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF 2012/590) and European Commission (FP7-PEOPLE-618308).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Intestinal permeability (IP) plays an important role in the pathophysiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We assessed site-specific (gastroduodenum, small intestine, colon and whole gut) IP in NAFLD patients and healthy controls (HC) and its association with the degree of hepatic steatosis, hepatic fibrosis and dietary composition in these NAFLD patients.METHODS: In vivo site-specific IP was analysed with a validated multi-sugar test in NAFLD patients and HC. Furthermore, in NAFLD patients, hepatic steatosis (chemical shift MRI), hepatic fibrosis (transient elastography) and dietary composition (food frequency questionnaire) were assessed.RESULTS: Fifty-two NAFLD patients and forty-six HC were included in this study. Background: Many genes and molecular pathways are associated with obesity, but the mechanisms from genes to obesity are less well known. Eating behaviors represent a plausible pathway, but because the relationships of eating behaviors and obesity may be bi-directional, it remains challenging to resolve the underlying pathways. A longitudinal approach is needed to assess the contribution of genetic risk during the development of obesity in childhood. In this study we aim to examine the relationships between the polygenic risk score for body mass index (PRS-BMI), parental concern of overeating and obesity indices during childhood. Methods: The IDEFICS/I.Family study is a school-based multicenter pan-European cohort of children observed for 6 years (mean +/- SD follow-up 5.8 +/- 0.4). Children examined in 2007/2008 (wave 1) (mean +/- SD age: 4.4 +/- 1.1, range: 2-9 years), in 2009/2010 (wave 2) and in 2013/2014 (wave 3) were included. A total of 5112 children (49% girls) participated at waves 1, 2 and 3. For 2656 children with genome-wide data we constructed a PRS based on 2.1 million single nucleotide polymorphisms. Z-score BMI and z-score waist circumference (WC) were assessed and eating behaviors and relevant confounders were reported by parents via questionnaires. Parental concern of overeating was derived from principal component analyses from an eating behavior questionnaire. Results: In cross-lagged models, the prospective associations between z-score obesity indices and parental concern of overeating were bi-directional. In mediation models, the association between the PRS-BMI and parental concern of overeating at wave 3 was mediated by baseline z-BMI (beta = 0.16, 95% CI: 0.10, 0.21) and baseline z-WC (beta = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.11, 0.23). To a lesser extent, baseline parental concern of overeating also mediated the association between the PRS-BMI and z-BMI at wave 3 (beta = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.07, 0.13) and z-WC at wave 3 (beta = 0.09, 95% CI: 0.07, 0.12). Conclusions: The findings suggest that the prospective associations between obesity indices and parental concern of overeating are likely bi-directional, but obesity indices have a stronger association with future parental concern of overeating than vice versa. The findings suggest parental concern of overeating as a possible mediator in the genetic susceptibility to obesity and further highlight that other pathways are also involved. A better understanding of the genetic pathways that lead to childhood obesity can help to prevent weight gain.
