1. Examination of the Bystander Intervention Model among Middle School Students: A Preliminary Study

Abstract

Researchers have utilized the Bystander Intervention Model to conceptualize bullying bystander behavior. The five-step model includes Notice the Event, Interpret the Event as an Emergency, Accept Responsibility, Know How to Act, and Decision to Intervene. The purpose of this study was to examine outcomes of an evidence-based bystander training within the context of the Bystander Intervention Model among middle school students (N = 79). We used a quasi-experimental design to examine differences in outcomes between bystanders and non-bystanders. We also assessed which of the steps were uniquely associated with post-training defending behavior. Results indicated a significant increase in Know How to Act for both groups. In contrast, we found increases in Notice the Event, Decision to Intervene, and defending behavior among bystanders only. Finally, Notice the Event and Decision to Intervene were uniquely associated with post-training defending behavior. We discuss implications of these findings for counselors.

7. Testing the persuasiveness of meme based arguments by analogy

Abstract

Psychologists have noted that analogical reasoning is pervasive in argumentation (Kuhn, 1992; Holyoak, 1997), but the forms these arguments can take varies substantially. Memes are one common format or argument-by-analogy. Memes are widely recognized images or templates that compares two situations to each other for the purpose of making some (often questionable) point. Even though memes-as-arguments are readily visible on social media, the persuasiveness of this category of argument-by-analogy---and specifically the features that predict their persuasiveness---have not been established. This study investigates whether and in what ways arguments by analogy, delivered in the form of a meme, are persuasive. We develop a large set of memes representing common meme structures, political leaning, and familiarity and examined how these factors predict a meme's perceived clarity, persuasiveness, and memorability, along with these memes effects on beliefs about issues such as climate change, immigration, and racism.

Abstract

Objective Real-life management of patients with hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD) among European Society of Hypertension Excellence Centres (ESH-ECs) is unclear : we aimed to investigate it. Methods A survey was conducted in 2023. The questionnaire contained 64 questions asking ESH-ECs representatives to estimate how patients with CKD are managed. Results Overall, 88 ESH-ECS representatives from 27 countries participated. According to the responders, renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockers, calcium-channel blockers and thiazides were often added when these medications were lacking in CKD patients, but physicians were more prone to initiate RAS blockers (90% [interquartile range: 70–95%]) than MRA (20% [10–30%]), SGLT2i (30% [20–50%]) or (GLP1-RA (10% [5–15%]). Despite treatment optimisation, 30% of responders indicated that hypertension remained uncontrolled (30% (15–40%) vs 18% [10%–25%]) in CKD and CKD patients, respectively). Hyperkalemia was the most frequent barrier to initiate RAS blockers, and dosage reduction was considered in 45% of responders when kalaemia was 5.5–5.9 mmol/L. Conclusions RAS blockers are initiated in most ESH-ECS in CKD patients, but MRA and SGLT2i initiations are less frequent. Hyperkalemia was the main barrier for initiation or adequate dosing of RAS blockade, and RAS blockers’ dosage reduction was the usual management.

10. Development of a Teacher Module for a Brief, Bystander Bullying Intervention for Middle Schools: Perspectives from School Personnel

Abstract

Bullying is a significant problem in the USA, with both school bullying and cyberbullying peaking in middle school. Although 80% of students witness bullying, only half of middle school students report bullying to their teachers. Bystander training is effective in teaching students how to intervene; however, teachers play an instrumental role in shaping bystander behavior. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the perspectives of middle school personnel on the content, usefulness, relevance, and feasibility of a teacher training designed as a companion module to a brief, bullying bystander intervention (STAC). School personnel (N = 15) recruited from two schools participated in focus groups to provide feedback on the STAC Teacher Module. Thematic analyses elicited eight key themes. Participants provided specific feedback on ways the program could be improved, including providing more information about cyberbullying. Overall, participants liked the content of the training, but shared they would like built-in discussion time. Participants also indicated the program was useful, relevant, and feasible for middle schools in their communities. Participants indicated their current school offerings are limited and that there is a need for bullying-specific training. Participants also identified implementation challenges, including limited time and financial resources, as well as the need for teacher buy-in. Finally, participants reported liking the flexibility of a technology-based program, but expressed concerns that it would be harder to engage teachers in an online format. This study serves as a first step in developing the STAC Teacher Module for middle schools.

Abstract

Collocations are semi-productive word combinations with one word used literally and one other figuratively, characterized by an arbitrary restriction on substitution (kill hope, #murder hope). They are notoriously difficult for L2 speakers to acquire, yet there is no processing model specific to collocations. The present study attempts to explain trends in L2 collocational processing as memory retrieval. Modifying MINERVA2, a frequency-based memory model, we simulate reaction times and compare them to data from 99 L1 and 230 L2 (L1 Portuguese) English speakers involving free combinations (eat cake, ‘comer bolos’), congruent (read minds, ‘ler mentes’) and incongruent collocations (kick habits, no equivalent translation in Portuguese), and nonsense baselines (#read cakes). Under the assumptions that the L2 lexicon develops conditioned on the L1 and that the L2 lexicon is sensitive to L1 frequencies, we report that MINERVA2 can predict processing trends in both L1 and L2 collocational processing.

Nonetheless, its common perception and dissemination as socially aversive may hamper its acknowledgment and use as an asset in the context of stress. This experimental study investigated the effects of receiving positive or negative information (i.e., prompts) about narcissism in the context of stress on attitudes towards this trait's association with stress. It also assessed individuals' experiences of narcissism's stress-coping properties when one believes themselves to be a high narcissism scorer, via an online survey. Hundred and five adults ( [Formula omitted] = 32.0; 22-64 years) completed measures of state-stress, music preferences, and narcissism. They were then randomly assigned to either the positive or negative prompt groups, being shown information highlighting the positive or negative impact of narcissism on stress management, respectively. Participants were then informed they scored above average on narcissism, despite their actual questionnaire scores, and undertook a stress-inducing procedure. Self-reported stress, implicit and explicit attitudes were measured pre- and post-prompt presentation. Results showed that, while prompts did not influence attitudes nor stress outcomes, individuals displayed neutral implicit attitudes towards narcissism's association with stress across measurement timepoints. These findings suggest that people's attitudes towards narcissism in the context of stress have not been deteriorated by this trait's predominant negative depiction outside this context. Therefore, the dissemination and establishment of narcissism as an asset for stress-coping may be received by the general population with less resistance than anticipated.

16. Learning Relational Rules from Rewards

Abstract

Humans perceive the world in terms of objects and relations between them. In fact, for any given pair of objects, there is a myriad of relations that apply to them. How does the cognitive system learn which relations are useful to characterize the task at hand? And how can it use these representations to build a relational policy to interact effectively with the environment? In this paper we propose that this problem can be understood through the lens of a sub-field of symbolic machine learning called relational reinforcement learning (RRL). To demonstrate the potential of our approach, we build a simple model of relational policy learning based on a function approximator developed in RRL. We trained and tested our model in three Atari games that required to consider an increasingly number of potential relations: Breakout, Pong and Demon Attack. In each game, our model was able to select adequate relational representations and build a relational policy incrementally. We discuss the relationship between our model with models of relational and analogical reasoning, as well as its limitations and future directions of research.

18. Witnessing Cyberbullying and Suicidal Ideation among Middle School Students

Abstract

Suicide is a significant public health concern school-aged youth. Although a growing body of literature has documented the association between cyberbullying and suicidal ideation, and the mediating effect of internalizing symptoms, there is no research to date examining the impact of witnessing cyberbullying and suicidal ideation. To address this gap, we conducted a cross-sectional study with middle school students (N = 130). Students completed questionnaires assessing witnessing cyberbullying, witnessing school bullying, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. We used structural equation modeling to test a mediational model in which we hypothesized internalizing symptoms would mediate the unique relationship between witnessing cyberbullying and suicidal ideation (i.e., controlling for witnessing school bullying). Results supported the mediational model, indicating the frequency of witnessing cyberbullying was positively related to internalizing symptoms, which in turn were related to higher levels of suicidal ideation. Findings suggest the importance of providing programs to support middle school students who witness cyberbullying to reduce the mental health risks (i.e., internalizing symptoms and suicidal ideation) associated with being a cyberbullying bystander.

Abstract

We consider the combinatorial problem where $p$ players aim to a complete set of $N$ different types of items (species) which are uniformly distributed. Let the random variables $T_{N(i)},\,\,i=1,2,\cdots,p$ denoting the number of trials needed until all $N$ types are detected (at least once), respectively for each player. This paper studies the impact of the number $p$ in the asymptotics of the expectation, the second moment, and the variance of the random variable \begin{equation*} M_{N(p)}: = \bigwedge_{i=1}^p T_{N(i)},\,\,\,\,\,\,N\rightarrow \infty. \end{equation*} The main ingredient in the expression of these quantittes are sums involving the Stirling numbers of the second kind; for which the asymptotics are explored. At the end of the paper we conjecture on a remarkable \textit{combinatorial identity}, regarding alternating binomial sums. These sums have been studied (mainly) by P. Flajolet due to their applications to digital search trees and quadtrees.

21. Gender Differences in Defending Behavior among Elementary School Students Trained in a Bullying Bystander Program: Is Self-Esteem a Moderator?

Abstract

This study evaluated the relationship among use defending behaviors, gender, and self-esteem among students trained in a brief, bystander bullying intervention (N = 93). Students were taught four specific strategies to use to defend targets of bullying. We used hierarchical regression analyses to test a moderator model in which we hypothesized females would report using defending behaviors more frequently than males post-training and that baseline self-esteem would moderate this relationship. Findings partially supported our hypotheses. Specifically, for "Turning it Over" (i.e., reporting bullying to an adult) and "Coaching Compassion" (i.e., gently confronting the perpetrator to communicate their behavior is not acceptable), the gender x self-esteem interaction was significant, suggesting that females with high self-esteem were most likely to use these defending behaviors post-training. In contrast, for "Stealing the Show" (i.e., using their sense of humor to distract the peer audience's attention away from the target), high self-esteem was positively associated with frequency of using this defending behavior for both males and females. For "Accompanying Others" (i.e., reaching out to the target to offer support), females used this strategy more frequently than males, and self-esteem was not a significant moderator. Findings highlight the importance of gender and self-esteem as significant factors that influence whether or not bystanders defend targets of bullying post-training. Implications for bystander training in school-based bullying prevention programs are discussed.

Background: Incidence of disability secondary to Parkinson’s disease is increasing faster globally than any other neurological condition. The diverse appearance of symptomatology associated with Parkinson’s, and the degenerative nature and subsequent functional decline, often increase dependence on caregivers for assistance with daily living, most commonly within a care home setting. Yet, primary literature and evidence synthesis surrounding these unique and complex care needs, challenges and the lived experiences of this population living in long-term nursing or residential facilities remains sparce. The aim of this review is to synthesize qualitative literature about the lived experience of people with Parkinson’s disease living in care home settings. Methods: A systematic search of the literature was conducted in October 2023 across six different databases (CINAHL, Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Scopus and Cochrane Library). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used to guide this review. Results: Five articles met the inclusion criteria. Four themes were identified following evidence synthesis: (1) Unique pharmacological challenges. (2) Transitioning and adapting to care home life and routines. (3) Dignified care within care homes. (4) Multidisciplinary care vacuum in care homes. Conclusion: This review revealed the significant and unique challenges for people with Parkinson’s disease when transitioning into care homes. These are exacerbated by wider social care challenges such as staffing levels, skill mixes and attitudes as well as a lack of disease-specific knowledge surrounding symptomatology and pharmacology. The lack of multi-disciplinary working and risk-adverse practice inhibited person-centred care and autonomy and reduced the quality of life of people living with Parkinson’s disease in care homes. Recommendations for practice highlight training gaps, the need for consistent and improved interdisciplinary working and better person-centred assessment and care delivery.

Abstract

Objectives In SLE, deregulation of haematopoiesis is characterised by inflammatory priming and myeloid skewing of haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). We sought to investigate the role of extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) as a key player for tissue injury in systemic autoimmune disorders.Methods Transcriptomic analysis of bone marrow (BM)-derived HSPCs from patients with SLE and NZBW/F1 lupus-prone mice was performed in combination with DNA methylation profile. Trained immunity (TI) was induced through β-glucan administration to the NZBW/F1 lupus-prone model. Disease activity was assessed through lupus nephritis (LN) histological grading. Colony-forming unit assay and adoptive cell transfer were used to assess HSPCs functionalities.Results Transcriptomic analysis shows that splenic HSPCs carry a higher inflammatory potential compared with their BM counterparts. Further induction of TI, through β-glucan administration, exacerbates splenic EMH, accentuates myeloid skewing and worsens LN. Methylomic analysis of BM-derived HSPCs demonstrates myeloid skewing which is in part driven by epigenetic tinkering. Importantly, transcriptomic analysis of human SLE BM-derived HSPCs demonstrates similar findings to those observed in diseased mice.Conclusions These data support a key role of granulocytes derived from primed HSPCs both at medullary and extramedullary sites in the pathogenesis of LN. EMH and TI contribute to SLE by sustaining the systemic inflammatory response and increasing the risk for flare.

Abstract

Systemic inflammation has been recognized as the cause and consequence of metabolic dysregulation in diabetes mellitus (DM). Presepsin has recently emerged as a promising biomarker for the detection of bacterial infections and sepsis. There is evidence that gut dysbiosis results in the increased circulating concentrations of Gram-negative bacteria lipopolysaccharide, the linkage of presepsin, which in turn promotes insulin resistance and correlates with the risk of diabetic complications. Thus, we hypothesized that presepsin could reflect the magnitude of systemic inflammation and metabolic decompensation in patients with DM even in the absence of infection. In this cross-sectional pilot study, we included 75 infection-free individuals with well-controlled (n = 19) and uncontrolled (n = 23) type 2 diabetes (T2D), well-controlled (n = 10) and uncontrolled (n = 10) type 1 diabetes (T1D), and normoglycemic controls (n = 13). Presepsin levels were compared between the groups and potential associations with demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters were explored. We observed that the duration of DM was associated with presepsin values (p = 0.008). When the participants were classified into the type of DM groups, the presepsin levels were found to be lower in the patients with T2D compared to those with T1D (p = 0.008). However, significance in that case was driven by the difference between the well-controlled groups. After adjusting for the effects of DM duration, presepsin was significantly lower in the well-controlled T2D group compared to the well-controlled T1D group [1.34 (2.02) vs. 2.22 (4.20) ng/mL, p = 0.01]. Furthermore, we adjusted our findings for various confounders, including age, body mass index, and waist circumference, and found that the difference in the presepsin values between the adequately controlled groups remained significant (p = 0.048). In conclusion, our findings suggest that presepsin could potentially serve as a surrogate marker of inflammation and metabolic control in people with DM.

Abstract

Purpose To describe the history of the Excellence Centre (EC) programme of the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) since the beginning in 2006, its achievements, and its future developments. Materials and Methods We list the number of ECs per country, the research projects performed so far, and the organisational steps needed to reshape the EC programme for the future. Results In August 2023, the ESH EC programme includes 118 registered ECs in 21 European and 7 non-European countries. Updates about the formal steps for application, re-application, transfer of EC and retirement of EC heads are given. Conclusions The EC programme of the ESH has been a success from the beginning. Further refinements will make it fit for the next decades.

Seventy adults (18-45 years, M = 22.8, SD = 6.6) completed measures of the Dark Triad traits (psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism), music preferences, and music uses, and undertook a stress-inducing procedure. Participants were randomly allocated to three groups: hip-hop/rap, classical music, control, being exposed to the respective genre or silence for 20 min after the predicted peak in stress. Results showed that classical and hip-hop/rap music equally facilitated stress reduction. Narcissism predicted lower stress when classical music preference was high. Narcissism also predicted enhanced performance but also greater stress, when paired with infrequent stress-management through music. These novel findings demonstrate how particular genres and traits, despite being predominantly negatively perceived, can enhance stress reduction or cognitive performance.

Abstract

Abstract Aims The Iron Intravenous Therapy in Reducing the burden of Severe Arrhythmias in HFrEF (RESAFE‐HF) registry study aims to provide real‐word evidence on the impact of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) on the arrhythmic burden of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), iron deficiency (ID), and implanted cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). Methods and results The RESAFE‐HF (NCT04974021) study was designed as a prospective, single‐centre, and open‐label registry study with baseline, 3, 6, and 12 month visits. Adult patients with HFrEF and CIEDs scheduled to receive IV FCM as treatment for ID as part of clinical practice were eligible to participate. The primary endpoint is the composite iron‐related endpoint of haemoglobin ≥ 12 g/dL, ferritin ≥ 50 ng/L, and transferrin saturation > 20%. Secondary endpoints include unplanned HF‐related hospitalizations, ventricular tachyarrhythmias detected by CIEDs and Holter monitors, echocardiographic markers, functional status (VO2 max and 6 min walk test), blood biomarkers, and quality of life. In total, 106 patients with a median age of 72 years (14.4) were included. The majority were male (84.9%), whereas 92.5% of patients were categorized to New York Heart Association II/III. Patients' arrhythmic burden prior to FCM administration was significant—19 patients (17.9%) received appropriate CIED therapy for termination of ventricular tachyarrhythmia in the preceding 12 months, and 75.5% of patients have frequent, repetitive multiform premature ventricular contractions. Conclusions The RESAFE‐HF trial is expected to provide evidence on the effect of treating ID with FCM in HFrEF based on real‐world data. Special focus will be given on the arrhythmic burden post‐FCM administration.
