Political representation is an essential component of the liberal democratic systems we have in most of the world today. Hence, many studies have focused on whether citizens are represented by politicians in normative, descriptive and substantive ways. Yet, we know surprisingly little about whether citizens feel represented. Constructivist scholars have further elaborated theoretically that representation is the result of a process in which linkage is created between represented and representative. Feeling represented is an essential part of establishing this representative relationship. In this paper, we plan to operationalize “feeling represented” with insights from the literature on political representation and empirical psychology. Acknowledging the emotional application of this concept effectively goes beyond the distinction of descriptive and substantive representation. By incorporating cutting-edge research on psychology, especially work on affective processing, emotions and identity, this paper will pave the way in developing a valid measurement of feeling represented. Through an online survey embedded experiment, we will test a new operationalization of the concept with an exploratory factor analysis. Hence, we contribute to our knowledge on how and to what extent political representation works in practice.

When activists act as unelected representatives by voicing political demands on behalf of other people, does that affect the political support of citizens for democracy? To answer this question we will conduct an original survey experiment in four European Countries; Sweden, Germany, Italy, and Romania (N=8000).

In the current study, we investigate different routes to representation which we conceptualize as descriptive representation, through demographic congruence, substantive representation through issue congruence, and psychological representation through personality congruence. All of these routes have empirical support, but we do not know how this extends to unelected representatives, which routes are more effective, and who uses which routes. Thus, this paper investigates which aspect of a claim leads citizens to feel represented and builds new representation models by exploring these routes to representation. We will conduct a conjoint experiment in Sweden (n=2000), Germany (n=2000), Italy (n=2000) and Romania (n=2000) in late June and July 2022. In the attached pre-analysis plan we provide details about (1) our research question and hypotheses, (2) the experimental design, (3) the stimuli, including results of a pre-test, (4) country selection, (5) the procedure, (6) The survey measures, (7) Control variables and exclusion criteria (8) sampling including a power analysis, (9) Pre-processing Steps, and (10) the analysis plan.

This report presents RECONNECT’s final policy recommendations and proposals for amendments to the European Union’s (EU or Union) founding Treaties, as well as to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (Charter). The suggested changes aim to strengthen democracy and rule of law in the EU, recognizing the Union’s potential to use its fundamental values to reconnect with citizens and, thus, bolster transparency and legitimacy for the European project. The report is to be read in conjunction with RECONNECT’s new narrative for European integration, which also highlights the importance of fundamental values, such as democracy and the rule of law, in the everyday life of European citizens.

This dissertation focuses on parliamentary communication in European parliaments, which has gained attention as a key deliberative arena of democracies. The author studies constitutive debates about countries' EU membership and selective participation in EU policies and examines parliamentary speech both as the dependent and independent variable. The dissertation concludes by discussing the implications of the findings for European integration theory and political practice, their limitations, and provides a broader outlook for research on political communication in the digital age.

Selv om det norske samfunnet de seneste årene har vært påvirket av en global pandemi hvor restriksjoner, smittetrykk og vaksiner har preget samfunnsdebatten har fokuset på bærekraft i samfunnet økt. Og i en bransje som er preget av høye utslipp og overforbruk har tekstilbransjen vært under stadig gransking. Som en konsekvens har flere tekstilbedrifter satt bærekraft som et sentralt verdiforslag i deres forretningsmodeller for å møte disse forventningene. Da forbrukeres interesse for bærekraft har økt og blitt et sentralt punkt på flere bedrifters agenda har også bedriftenes kommunikasjon rundt temaet økt betraktelig. Med denne økningen har man derimot også sett en økning i andelen falske og vage påstander, noe som har resultert i at forbrukeres syn på kommunikasjonens troverdighet har blitt redusert. Målet med dette studiet er derfor å belyse i en kontekst av empiri, kommunikasjonsteori og forbrukersosiologi, hvordan bærekraftskommunikasjon mot forbruker kan gjennomføres på en troverdig og overbevisende måte. Oppgavens empiriske grunnlag består av kvalitativt analysert intervjudata fra syv informanter som besitter erfaring med bærekraft og bærekraftskommunikasjon i tekstilbedrifter. Hoved bidraget til oppgaven er konkretiserte retningslinjer for hvordan bærekraftskommunikasjon burde utformes og gjennomføres på måter som er troverdig og overbevisende på forbruker. Videre presenteres og argumenteres det for regulatoriske tiltak som må etterspørres av forbrukere og bedrifter, som myndigheter må implementere for å påse at kommunikasjonen følger et universalt rammeverk. Et annet viktig funn er hvordan empiri og teori peker på en synergi mellom forbruker, bedrifter og myndigheter hvor det er en gjensidig avhengighet i prosessen mot mer tilfredsstillende bærekraftskommunikasjon. Although the Norwegian society in recent years has been affected by a global pandemic where restrictions, infection rates and vaccines have affected the public debate, the focus on sustainability has increased. And in an industry characterized by high emissions and overconsumption, the textile industry has been under constant scrutiny. As a consequence, several textile companies have set sustainability as a key value proposition in their business models to meet the expectations from society. As consumers' interest in sustainability has increased and become a central point on several companies' agendas, their communication on the topic has also increased considerably. With this increase, however, there has also been an increase in the proportion of false and vague claims, which has resulted in a reduction in consumers' views on the credibility of communication. The aim of this study is therefore to shed light in a context of empiricism, communication theory and consumer sociology, on how sustainable communication with consumers can be carried out in a credible and convincing way. The empirical basis of the thesis consists of qualitatively analyzed interview data from seven informants who have experience with sustainability communication in textile companies. The main contribution of the thesis is concrete guidelines for how sustainability communication should be designed and implemented in ways that are credible and convincing to the consumer. Furthermore, it is presented and argued for regulatory measures that must be demanded by consumers and companies, which authorities must implement to ensure that communication follows a universal framework. Another important finding is how empirical data and theory point to a synergy between consumers, companies and authorities where there is a mutual dependence in the process towards more satisfying sustainability communication.

Formålet med denne masteroppgaven er å analysere hvordan klimaaktivister diskuterer globalisering og gjennom dette å gi innsikt i innholdet i representative påstander. Representative påstander danner en ny forståelse av politisk representasjon som å fremsette påstander om å representere noen og mottakelsen av slike påstander, utviklet av Michael Saward. Gjennom en Representative Claims Analysis av 162 YouTube-videoer undersøker jeg globaliseringsdiskursen i politiske påstander om klimaendringer fra 20 aktivister som har hevdet at de representer noen i klimaspørsmålet. For å utforske det kulturelle aspektet ved representative påstander, sammenligner jeg engelsktalende og fransktalende aktivister. Basert på et lingvistisk perspektiv og tidligere globaliseringslitteratur har jeg forventninger om at fransktalende aktivister uttrykker mer kritiske syn på globalisering sammenlignet med engelsktalende aktivister, samt mer variasjon i oppfatningene av globalisering blant engelsktalende aktivister. Analysen viser at disse forventningene kun støttes for globalisert økonomi, og ikke for globalisert kultur og globalisert politikk. For å undersøke ulike sider av klimadebatten, som er til stede på YouTube, analyserer jeg både aktivister som tar til orde for raske klimatiltak og de som er motstandere av dette. Analysen finner noen tendenser. Mens det er variasjon mellom de som motsetter seg raske klimatiltak, indikerer analysen likheter i globaliseringsdiskurs blant de som tar til orde for raske klimatiltak. Dette inkluderer et kritisk syn på den globaliserte økonomien, for det meste støtte til global kultur, og noen bekymringer og muligheter for globalisert politikk. The aim of this master thesis is to analyze how climate activists discuss globalization and provide insight into the content of representative claims. Representative claims form a new understanding of political representation, as the making of claims to represent someone and the reception of such claims, developed by Michael Saward. Through a Representative Claims Analysis of 162 YouTube videos, I examine globalization discourse in political claims on climate change of 20 activists who have claimed themselves representatives for someone on the climate change issue. To explore the cultural aspect of representative claims, I compare English-speaking and French-speaking activists. Based on a linguistic perspective and previous globalization literature, I develop expectations regarding French-speaking activists expressing more critical views on globalization than English-speaking activists, together with more variety in the perceptions on globalization among English-speaking activists. The analysis indicates that these expectations are supported only for the globalized economy, not for globalized culture and globalized politics. Aimed to examine different sides of the climate change debate on YouTube, I analyze activists who advocate for rapid climate action and those who oppose this. The analysis provides some tendencies. While there is a variety among those who oppose rapid climate action, the analysis indicates similarities among those who advocate for rapid climate action in globalization discourse. This includes criticism of the globalized economy, mainly support for global culture, and some concerns and opportunities for globalized politics.

Den demokratiske utviklingen i Ungarn har utfordret sentrale aspekter ved demokrati, menneskerettigheter og rettsstat, som er alle verdier som Europarådet har som hovedmandat å beskytte. Likevel har litteraturen om det multilaterale arbeidet med å bekjempe utviklingen i Ungarn stort sett fokusert på EU eller konkludert med at Europarådets arbeid har feilet. I et forsøk på å forstå motsetningen mellom Europarådets mandat og de tilsynelatende svake resultatene foreslår jeg tre teoretiske modeller som fokuserer på ulike analysenivåer, ulike aktører og ulike typer årsakssammenhenger. Den første modellen fokuserer på Europarådets virkemidler og de mange måtene de kan omgås på av en stat som ikke ønsker å innfinne seg. Den andre modellen fokuserer på de rasjonelle kalkuleringene til Europarådets medlemstater som de fleste også er EU medlemmer og som av ulike årsaker kan ha valgt i å prioritere EU isteden. Den tredje modellen utforsker mulighetene for at enkeltstater kan ha forsøkt å undergrave Europarådets arbeid fra innsiden eller at medlemstatene som helhet ikke har gitt Europarådet den finansielle og økonomiske støtten som organisasjonen trengte for å lykkes. For å finne ut om de tre modellene passer med forståelsen og erfaringene til de som har jobbet tett på temaet har jeg gjennomført seks ekspertintervjuer med sju individer som har fulgt ulike deler av Europarådet over tid. Materialet fra intervjuene indikerer at alle tre modellene kan gi nyttig innsikt for å forstå Europarådets respons. I konklusjonen argumenterer jeg likevel for at den tredje modellen kanskje er den mest utslagsgivende. Europarådets virkemidler er i stor grad avhengig av medlemsstatenes støtte for å fungere optimalt, samtidig som en nedprioritering av Europarådet over tid kan ha bidratt til at det ble rasjonelt for medlemsstatene å prioritere EU i det multilaterale arbeidet for å bekjempe den politiske utviklingen i Ungarn. Democratic backsliding in Hungary has challenged core principles of democracy, human rights, and rule of law, which are all values that the Council of Europe (CoE) was deliberately set up to protect. Despite this, the literature on the multilateral work to combat democratic backsliding has either focused on the EU or it has concluded that CoE has failed to produce a strong and timely response. Seeking to explore this apparent puzzle, I propose three theoretical models that could explain CoE’s seeming diminished role and lack of achievements. The models focus on different actors, different casual relationships, and different levels of analysis. The first model suggests that CoE’s tools were not strong enough to meet the challenge, as there are many ways in which they can be circumvented by an unwilling state. The second model suggests that rational member states, most of whom are also part of the EU, might have prioritized the EU in their response to democratic backsliding. The third model investigates the possibility that specific member states might have worked to obstruct CoE’s work from the inside or that member states as a collective might have been unwilling to provide CoE with the political and financial support it needed to succeed. To find out whether the three proposed models resonate with the perception and experiences of those working with the topic, I have conducted six expert interviews with seven individuals that have followed the response of different branches of CoE over time. The interviews seem to indicate that all three model can provide useful insight to help us understand CoE’s response to democratic backsliding in Hungary. However, in the conclusion I argue that the last model might be the most decisive. Indeed, lacking member state support for CoE over time might have negatively impacted the effectiveness of CoE’s tools and might also have made it more tempting to prioritize the EU instead.

Fokuset i denne masteroppgaven er å utforske politiske influensere som plasserer seg til det ytre høyre i den politiske sfæren, og deres diskurs rundt temaene globalisering og covid. Globalisering fortsetter å være et gjennomgående sentralt tema som påvirker hele verden på forskjellige måter. Det skaper skiller, og har resultert i et skille mellom det som kan kalles vinnere og tapere av globalisering. Taperne motsetter seg følgene av globalisering, og plasserer seg ofte i ytterkanten av den politiske sfæren. Ankomsten til covid-19 pandemien skapte store sjokkbølger og ble raskt en framtredende og merkbar kraft i samfunnet, på samme måte som globalisering. Denne oppgaven er interessert i å utforske om covid diskursivt relaterer til globalisering ved å spørre om covid har erstattet eller forsterket globaliseringsskillelinjen blant politiske influensere til det ytre høyre. Tidligere litteratur har forsket mye på politiske parti, politikere og institusjoner, men denne oppgaven ønsker å utforske den moderne trenden med politiske aktivister som tar i bruk sosiale medier. Youtube som plattform vil være kilden til analysen i oppgaven, og oppgaven antar at diskursen vil basere seg på en kommunitær (communitarian) filosofi i tillegg til å være populistisk, for eksempel gjennom forsvar av stengte grenser og nasjonalistiske uttrykk. Oppgaven finner at globaliseringsdiskursen er både kommunitær og populistisk, og at diskursen rundt covid delvis reflekterer dette. Basert på de inkluderte indikatorene forsterker covid globalisering i diskursen, men et interessant funn er at individuell frihet i økende grad blir viktig i det covid blir introdusert. The focus of this master’s thesis is the discourse on globalisation and covid by far-right political influencers. Globalisation continues to be a salient permeating subject, affecting all corners of the world in an uneven manner. It creates divides and has as such resulted in the division between winners and losers of globalisation. The losers resist the forces of globalisation and are commonly situated at the fringes of the political sphere. The emergence of the covid-19 pandemic created large shockwaves, arguably becoming a force that is noticeable to the same extent that globalisation is. This thesis is interested in reviewing whether covid discursively relates to globalisation by asking the question of whether covid-19 has replaced or reinforced the globalisation cleavage among far-right political influencers. While previous research on political parties, politicians and institutions is extensive, this thesis aims to explore a new contemporary trend of political activists who gather to social media. The social media platform Youtube will be the source for the analysis, and the discourse is expected to be communitarian and populist, advocating closed borders and nationalism. The thesis finds that the globalisation discourse of the far-right political influencers is indeed communitarian and populist, and that covid does reflect it to some degree. Based on the included indicators, covid reinforces globalisation in the discourse, yet an interesting find is that individual freedom becomes increasingly emphasised in the discourse when covid is introduced.
