Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has shown great promise for desalination due to its high photothermal conversion efficiency. However, for interfacial evaporation, the evaporator must have superior mechanical quality and strong thermal stability. To this end, ceramic nanofibrous mats with good mechanical strength can serve as a stable substrate for desalination. Herein, with the aid of finite element analysis, flexible Al2O3/TiO2 nanofibrous mats with robust mechanical properties are fabricated, where the stress dispersion greatly facilitates the Al2O3/TiO2 nanospheres to be uniformly dispersed into the mat. The flexible nanofibrous mats exhibit a high tensile strength up to 2.18 MPa. Afterward, a two-dimensional (2D) Al2O3/TiO2/MXene mat is constructed by a simple drop-casting method. Interestingly, the evaporation rate of the Al2O3/TiO2/MXene-2 mat reached 1.43 kg m−2 h−1, and the light-to-vapor energy conversion efficiency can reach 102% at a power density of 1.0 kW m−2. To measure the desalination efficiency, five ion concentrations in the collected water were found to be well below the safe salinity levels defined by standards set by the World Health Organization and U.S Environmental Protection Agency. Utilizing basic origami technology, the three-dimensional (3D) photothermal evaporator was integrated with the 2D mat due to its flexibility and ductility. Additionally, the evaporation rate increased to 1.61 kg m−2 h−1. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) nanomaterials are critical to producing clean oxygenation or value-added chemical production by utilizing sustainable solar energy, but are always limited by simultaneous integration of architectural engineering and electronic regulation in one structure. Directed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and finite element analysis (FEA), the bio-inspired ivy-like Fe2O3 heterostructures with enriched oxygen defects on TiO2 nanofibers are designed for boosting PEC performances. Ivy-like Fe2O3 photo-sheets remarkably enhanced the light harvesting by multiple light-mater interactions. The oxygen vacancies on Fe2O3 photo-sheets could aid the photons catching and promote the reactivity at active sites. More importantly, demonstrated by a well-designed dynamic observation, the abundant tip-edges within ivy-like Fe2O3 photo-sheets enabled the surface of heterostructure with hydrophilic and aerophobic properties. The functionalized surface allowed the rapid desorption of produced bubbles and thus ensured a high density of unoccupied active sites for electrolyte accessing. Featured by these attributes, the Fe2O3@TiO2 nanofibers delivered an excellent photocurrent of 40.8 mA/mg, high donor density (1.2 × 1018 cm−3), and rapid oxygen production rate (1 mmol/(L·h)). This work demonstrates a new strategy on nano-structural design for enhancing light-harvesting and making a hydrophilic/aerophobic surface on low-dimensional oxide nanomaterial, holding great potential on designing high-performance PEC devices for producing survival source gas, carbon-neutral fuel, and valued-chemicals. Up to now, the synthesis of non‐ligand‐capped 2D transition‐metal nanostructures remained big synthetic challenges. Herein, ultrathin and microporous AlOOH/Al2O3 nanosheets were topologically grown on the surface of TiO2‐based nanofibers by a water‐only hydrothermal strategy starting from electrospun Al2O3/TiO2 nanofibers. The TiO2 nanofibers lowered the surface energy for the sustained‐released aluminum species and thereby allowed them in situ hydrated to laminar AlOOH. The metastable AlOOH tended to dehydrate to Al2O3 simultaneously, leaving a well‐maintained 2D structure with sharp corners and steps, as well as enriched micropores. The nanosheets‐on‐nanofibers exhibited 2856–3370 mg/g of adsorption capacity toward RhB and an efficient removal efficiency over 70% at high throughput (30 mL/h). The promoted light‐harvesting by the perpendicularly attached nanosheets further endowed a significant photodegradation for RhB within 1 h. The presented green and facile approach toward the fabrication of 2D metal oxide nanostructures paves the way to a new variety of oxide nanomaterials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The thermal stability of CeO2 nanomaterials can directly impact both the uniformity of the supported catalysts and the catalytic behavior of CeO2 itself. However, knowledge about the thermal stability of CeO2 is still deficient. Here, we conduct in-situ transmission electron microscopy experiments and theoretical calculations to elucidate the thermal stability of CeO2 nanomaterials under different environments. A sinter (< 700 °C) and a structural decomposition (> 700 °C) are observed within CeO2 nanoflowers under O2. The sinter firstly occurs among the nanoflowers' monomers and then the sintered nanoparticles structurally decompose to tiny nanoparticles from the strain interface. Under a vacuum environment, the CeO2 nanoflowers firstly undergo a transition from cubic fluorite CeO2 to hexagonal Ce2O3, accompanied by the oxygen release. The Ce2O3 nanoparticles further atomically sublimate from the edges to the center under high temperatures. Theoretical calculation results reveal a considerably lower energy barrier for the structural decomposition under O2 and for the sublimation under vacuum. Ultrafine noble metals have emerged as advanced nanocatalysts in modern society but still suffer from unavoidable sintering at temperatures above 250 °C (e.g., Pt). In this work, closely packed CeO 2 grains were confined elegantly in fibrous nanostructures and served as a porous support for stabilizing sub-3 nm Pt clusters. Through precisely manipulating the asymmetry of obtained nanofibers, uneven strain was induced within C-shaped CeO 2 nanofibers with tensile strain at the outer side and compressive strain at the inner side. As a result, the enriched oxygen vacancies significantly improved adhesion of Pt to CeO 2 , thereby boosting the sinter-resistance of ultraclose sub-3 nm Pt clusters. Notably, no aggregation was observed even after exposure to humid air at 750 °C for 12 h, which is far beyond their Tammann temperature (sintering onset temperature, below 250 °C). In situ HAADF-STEM observation revealed a unique sintering mechanism, wherein Pt clusters initially migrate toward the grain boundaries with concentrated stain and undergo slight coalescence, followed by subsequent Ostwald ripening at higher temperatures. Moreover, the sinter-resistant Pt/C-shaped CeO 2 effectively catalyzed soot combustion (over 700 °C) in a durable manner. This work provides a new insight for developing sinter-resistant catalysts from the perspective of strain engineering within nano-oxides.

Metal sintering poses significant challenges for developing reliable catalytic systems toward high-temperature reactions, particularly those based on metal clusters with sizes below 3 nm. In this work, electrospun dual-oxide fibril-in-tubes consisting of CeO 2 and Al 2 O 3 are rationally designed in an all-in-one manner, to stabilize 2.3 nm Pt clusters with a Tammann temperature (sintering onset temperature) lower than 250 °C. The abundant pores and channels effectively stabilize the Pt clusters physically, while the strong support, CeO 2 , with high adhesion, pins Pt clusters firmly, and the adjacent weak support, Al 2 O 3 , with low adhesion, provides energy barriers to prevent the clusters and emitted Pt atom(s) from moving across the support. Therefore, the ultra-close 2.3 nm Pt clusters, featuring an average nearest neighboring distance of only 2.1 nm, were carefully stabilized against sintering at temperatures exceeding 750 °C, even in oxidative and steam-containing environments. In addition, this catalytic system can efficiently and durably serve in diesel combustion, a high-temperature exothermic reaction, showing no activity decline after 5 cycles. Photothermal heating and photocatalytic treatment are two solar-driven water processing approaches by harnessing NIR and UV-vis light, respectively, which can fully utilize solar energy if integrated. However, it remains a challenge to achieve high performance in both approaches when integrated in a material due to uncontrollable heat diffusion. Here, we report a demonstration of heat confinement on photothermal sites and fluid cooling on photocatalysis sites at the nanoscale, within a well-designed heat and fluid confinement nanofiber reactor. Photothermal and photocatalytic nanostructures were alternatively aligned in electrospun nanofibers for on-demand nanofluidic thermal management as well as easy folding into 3D structures with enhanced light utilization and mass transfer. Such a design showed simultaneously high photothermal evaporation rate (2.59 kg m -2 h -1 , exceeding the limit rate) and efficient photocatalytic upcycling of microplastics pollutant into valued products. Airborne particulate matter (PM) primarily resulting from fossil fuel burning is an increasingly global issue. In this work, an intrinsically fragile TiO 2 nanofibrous mat was facilely engineered with good structural integrity, flexibility, foldability, and high-temperature resistance (~1300 °C), by suppressing the sintering ( i.e. , growth) of nanocrystallites in each single nanofiber. Such functionalization enables self-regenerative air filtration for PM capture and in situ catalytic elimination in a "one-stone-two-birds" approach. Finite element analysis simulation revealed the retained nanopores in each anti-sintering nanofiber could facilitate the air flow during filtration. Without any chemical or physical modification, this self-standing and lightweight (7.1 g m -2 ) fibrous mat showed 96.05% filtration efficiency for 3-5 μm NaCl particles, with a low pressure drop of only 18 Pa and high quality factor of 0.179 Pa -1 under an airflow velocity of 32 L min -1 . By utilizing its photocatalytic attribute, the nanofibrous mat in situ eliminated the captured particles from incense burning under one Sun irradiation in 4 h, and thereby spontaneously regenerated in an easy manner. The straightforward grafting of Au nanoparticles onto nanofibers could enable a quick degradation toward cigarette smoke, mainly due to the photothermally elevated local temperature by Au around the reactive sites. The plasmonic fibrous mat kept a high and stable filtration efficiency of PM 0.3 , PM 2.5 , and PM 10 over 98.62%, 99.76%, and 99.99% during an outdoor long-term filtration test for 12 h under sunlight irradiation (Nanjing, China, September, 26 th , 2020, 7:30 to 19:30). This work provides a solution for solving the airborne pollution from its source, prolonging the lifetime of the filter, and avoiding the risk of producing secondary pollution.
